elitexc weigh in kimbo slice
The official weigh-ins for the Elite XC primetime special “Saturday Night Fights” are set for tomorrow (Friday, May 30) at 2 p.m. ET OUTSIDE the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

Be sure to bring the Kevlar.

Bad jokes aside, the event, which is located at 165 Mulberry St. in Newark (just two blocks from Newark Penn Station), is free and open to the public.

Therefore, if you’re in the area be sure to stop by and check out the festivities.

Here’s the card for the historic event in its entirety:

Main event:

265 lbs.: Kimbo Slice vs. James “The Colossus” Thompson

Main card (televised):

185 lbs.: Elite XC Middleweight Champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler vs. Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith
185 lbs: Joey Villasenor vs. Phil “The New York Badass” Baroni
140 lbs: Gina “Conviction” Carano vs. Kaitlin Young
265 lbs.: Brett “The Grim Rogers vs. Jon Murphy

Under card (may not be broadcast):

265 lbs.: Carlos Moreno vs. Carlton Haselrig
185 lbs.: Chris Liguori vs. Jim Bova
170 lbs.: Nick Serra vs. Matt Makowski
140 lbs.: Wilson Reis vs. Justin Robbins
160 lbs.: James “Binky” Jones vs. Calvin Kattar
135 lbs.: Zach Makovsky vs. Andre Soares
155 lbs.: Mike Groves vs. Joe Sampieri

If you’re in the area, come down and check out the fighters as they go through with the last of the formalities before getting down on Saturday night. I’m pretty sure Gary Shaw will be emceeing this thing, and he’s always good for a few laughs.

Remember that MMAmania.com will provide LIVE blow-by-blow, round-by-round coverage of the main card action, beginning at 9 p.m. ET with the CBS broadcast on fight night. In addition, we will post the latest quick results of the prelim action at around 7 p.m. ET.

“Be sure to bring the kevlar”

Seriously bro, uncalled for. Dont be a douche.
Have you been to Prudential Center? If so, you’d know its not in a bad section of Newark. If you have been and still say “bring the kevlar” then maybe you should start training a bit. (more?) Maybe im just not a fairy, i dunno.

It was a joke, fairy. Relax. And “not in a bad section” is a relative term. It’s good for Newark standards. I used to work on Broad Street for years and I wouldn’t necessarily refer to it as “not in a bad section.”

Y is Nate Diaz fighting Josh Neer at the next UFN 14 event?

Tyson Griffin needs to stop being a Pu**y and accept the Diaz fight! Man up Tyson!

Hey Mania,

The Prudential Center is only a little over an hour away, and there are still lower level seats available for like $50. Regarding the weigh ins tomorrow, is there any meet and greet, or autograph session like the UFC does. Or is there any way to meet the fighters before the event?

Hey Maniacs,

Have any of you ever attended a live EliteXC Event? Is it worth considering last minute? Come to think of it, I wouldn’t even bother buying the tickets thru ticketmaster, I would just drive down and buy from a scalper. There’s no way they are making money on this event.

I think only 7,000 tix have been sold thus far … def. worth going to if in the area. It’s cheap. And I have no idea about an autograph signing, but I’d imagine most of the top dogs will be there to show their support. Def. some good opps to score autographs and pics. Id buy tix from the box office at the arena … not online.

if by worth going you mean a joke of an event. The day I pay to see a guy not in the top 100 main event a card is the same day I watch gay porn for fun!! I’ll watch it free andd in HD, but just for the freak show it is. 2 bouts I’m looking forward to, phil baroni and robbie lawler, but even these match ups are mediocre at best!

Fightline:
Cung Le Comments On A Potential Matchup Against Anderson SIlva
By Jason Perkins | May 28, 2008

Cung Le is coming off of the biggest win of his career, a victory over MMA legend Frank Shamrock. Le recently sat down with our friends over atMMAFrenzy to discuss the win, and his future.
Of note, was Le’s thoughts on fighting UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva:

I feel my promoter is open to do a co-promotion, but I know the UFC isn’t willing to do one, but I am sure that Dana White can come in and borrow me for one fight, but of course he has to pay my promoter something.

I’m sure something can be worked out, if the fans really want that fight, and if Dana could make it happen I am sure my promoter Scott Coker would be open to it.

When asked how Le thinks he would fair in a fight with Silva, Le was humble as always.

I am going to answer you like if I was asked if I would beat Frank, I don’t know. I didn’t know if I was going to beat Frank, I don’t know if I would beat Anderson if I fought him. The only way I would find out if I could beat him is to fight him.

To all my opponents, doesn’t matter if it is Mike Altman my first MMA fight, to an Anderson Silva, who is pound for pound the best in the world, I respect them all the same. They are martial artists and they train, they live the martial arts lifestyle. I have respect for all my martial arts brothers out there, and then if we step into the cage, then we step in the cage, which then is do our best to win.

True but with Kimbo as the main event, can we really take this card seriously???

I just comment on the entertainment value only as this is Gary Shaw’s master business plan for elite XC.

I agree with you Big Jake.

I’m not knocking the entertainment side.

Gary Shaw is all about entertainment hence my wish to see Lawler and Baroni.

However, if we are talking true MMA competition, then most fighters wouldn’t be on this card.

But back to the card at hand, as I am not taking this card seriously and treating it as true MMA competition, I’d love to see Lawler and Baroni, regardless of Baroni’s roid rage.

I’m sure it won’t be long until Gary Shaw is actually injecting the fighters, in the neck, with roids in the dressing rooms before their fights anyway just to make it more entertaining lol.

If they wanted the card to be legit to real MMA fans I think all they had to do was have the Middleweight title fight as the Main Event and Kimbo as the feature bout, like the UFC did with Brock.

I’m actually kind of looking forward to the Carano fight, I’ve never seen her fight before. And I have to say that despite all the publicity good or bad with Kimbo, I like the guy. Maybe that will change after I watch this event. I’ve never seen him fight in real time so I’m looking forward to it. Plus, it’s free. I know people are worried that this will hinder the popularity of the sport, but I realized that even if it’s not popular I’m still gonna watch it. So as long as I can watch it I’m good, and not having to pay anything is a welcomed relief from $39.99 twice a month.

Why am I getting so much hate from the MMA Community? Im humble, I respect the art, Im in great shape, I never said I would be putting guys in triangle chokes, rubber guards and uma platas, Im a brawler Im a stand up fighter, I dont run, duck, or dance around Im in the asses game meaning I kick them and I put them in seats, with well over 40 million hits on my Youtube videos, just strictly from knocking people OUT, you dont think Im main event material? 40 million? Dana is just mad he missed the boat on me, but he has Brock Lessnar who is know for fake fighting and NCAA wrestling career, yeah I bet 40 million watched him wrestle in college, Dana is such a genius that instead of building Lessnar up he puts him in there with a submission expert and tarnishes the guy he paid all that money to get, thats like putting a Lion up against a Shark….in the water, So yeah Ive fought a few tomato cans, but Its just building me up, the same as Boxing has been doing for decades from Joe Louis, to Rocky Marciano, Now you got Chuck Liddel talking trash, and Dana White saying BJ Penn will beat me, but nobody outside of MMa hardcore fans want to see BJ Penn, check his Youtube #’s which in this day and age is a good way to gage a persons relative heat and public interest besides the gate $$$ of course,I think its jealousy and envy over the a magazine covers, and media attention Ive been getting, but Im always humble, never talking trash, I cant help it I came from the street, there aint many dojos in the hoods of Miami, but Ill keep training with the Legend Bas Rutten and getting better and better until I got the sport mastered and then Ill get better still, meanwhile you just keep hating on me..

I’m not sure if this is actually Kimbo.
If it’s someone else, they did a good job mimicking him.

But, I can only speak for me personally.
It’s not that I hate you personally.
I hate how you are marketed; which you may or may not have any control over.
You have become a ‘face of mma’ and the marketing focuses on your brutual street fighting, because thats what sells.
MMA is trying to be taken as something other then the ‘human cockfighting’ that so many media outlets tout it to be, because thats what sells for them.

So people like Gary Shaw are making it harder for others, who want people to showcase the professional side of mma.

Having Slice headline this card when he only has two lame MMA fights is an insult to all the fighters that have worked hard to accomplished things. This is a set-back for MMA. Apparently the head honcho of CBS doesn’t think that CBS should be televising this – so unless this card does astronomical numbers (which it won’t) this will be a one time deal. By next year (if not sooner) EliteXC will be out of business.

Just when MMA was getting some credibility, CBS and EliteXC want to turn MMA into WWE.

If they aren’t careful, this thing could turn the clock back 10 years for MMA. Kimbo is not worthy of a main event and sends the message that they are just looking to fill seats and not showcase real talent.

Heck, send Frank Mir in again to show what MMA is about. It doesn’t even need to be a Couture or Fedor.

The UFC should sign kimbo to a 3 fight contract. If he wins then keep him around. If he gets beaten for the bouts, then toss him back to the elitexc crap. Taking kimbo would ruin the elitexc and kimbo losing, would kill his hype. TADA! I’m pretty sure Gary Shaw aint letting kimbo go tho. I really wish the UFC got the CBS deal instead. can you imagine what the fights would look like? this is the best the elitexc has to offer. can you imagine what the ufc would bring to the table? THis is by no means the best show Elite has to offer.

They have a Top 5 WW in Jake Shields

They have a Top 10 in the ever so popular Nick Diaz

They have Antonio Silva who is the next big thing in the HW division, minus his last performance against Ricco…

They have Frank Shamrock who no matter what people say, is a LEGEND of the sport.

Not to mention that they often times co-promote with Strikeforce and pick up the likes of Gilbert Melendez, who is a Top 10 lb for lb fighter, and Cung Le who is gaining popularity very fast.

This is just their first show on CBS. They have had several shows on ShowTime…. SOme people seem to forget. THis isn’t meant to be the best card ever.

ViolentMike clearly has stock in Elite XC or CBS.

WHAT A PATHETIC AND OBVIOUSLY RIGGED SET OF MATCHES
(ESPECIALLY THAT JOKE KIMBO’S)

This is simply Tuff Man in a cage. When someone with some MMA talent actually started doing something (usually against CBS’ selected ‘winner’), there was the ref to step in (”Nothing’s happening guys, nothing’s happening”).

Kimbo actually started to tap out early during the fight when in a guillotine, but the two got repositioned and the stupid announcers insisted he was ‘waving that he was okay’.

These same geniuses predicted that Kimbo would win if he targeted his opponent’s cauliflower ear– which he did — and lo and behold the fight was stopped three seconds later.

The best was when the Colossus tried to hit the ref.

THIS WAS AN ABSOLUTE DISGRACE.

Non-fans don’t even know the difference. I had people telling me, “I’m finally going to watch a UFC fight on Saturday night.” And I was telling them they were too late, it was last Saturday. When they argued, I thought maybe they meant the WEC on Sunday. When they continued to argue, I finally figured out they meant EliteXC on CBS. However, they would not believe me that it wasn’t UFC. It seems MMA is attached to UFC for many non-fans just like football is to NFL.

The Elite XC event was terrible. This was a very bad representation of MMA. The bouts were certainly not representative of anything that resembles a good MMA fight.

CBS was certainly trying to tone down the “brutality” of MMA fighting with stopping boubts well before they should have been. The whole Hollywood entrances etc were boring and waiting 1/2 hour for the first fight was rediculous. The girls were certainly the best fight of the night but even that did not go as far as it should. If CBS is not going to show MMA the way it really is then they should not show it. MMA is not brutal but great entertainment. At least the UPC and WEC referees know when to stop a fight and when to let the fighters determine the outcome.

I suggest banning Elite XC. It is too bad that many people were introduced to MMA tonight and did not see what the real MMA is all about. The referee(s) and doctors were too quick to stop the fights. I certainly hope that UFC and WEC will not support Elite XC.

I can’t wait to see a real MMA card tomorrow night.
