ufc 84 preview

Our own Jesse Holland recently stopped in to chat with Ariel Helwani at MMARated.com to preview the UFC 84: “Ill Will” pay-per-view (PPV) event that takes place tomorrow (Saturday, May 24) from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Here are some specific discussion points:

  • Should Sean Sherk have received a title shot coming off a suspension?
  • If BJ Penns wins should he move up to welterweight?
  • Will this truly be Tito Ortiz’s final fight in the UFC?
  • What becomes of Ortiz after Saturday night?
  • If Machida wins should he face the winner of Rampage/Griffin?
  • Which Keith Jardine will show up against Wanderlei Silva?
  • If Silva loses will he move down to middleweight?
  • Is Thiago Silva the best kept secret in the UFC’s light heavyweight division?
  • Is Soku the real deal or just a two-hit wonder?

Check it out when you have some time right HERE. It turned out to be a solid discussion.

Thanks again to Ariel for inviting Jesse to come out and play. He doesn’t get out much and when he does his friends often attempt to ditch him.

Discussions often go like this:

“Jesse, me and Billy are going to go inside and play “Grand Theft Auto IV” until our thumbs fall off. What are you going to do?”

Sadly, he doesn’t get the hint.

WOW those are really good points. I would say that Machida does get a title shot only if he wins and Jardine loses.. But Jardine and Machida should fight if they both win but the UFC would just be gettin jardine angry forcing him to leave in the future.. W Silva would face Rampage only if he loses. T Silva needed to fight Evans !!! I say Evans vs Hamill… UFC 84!! i’m so geeked out about this i would kill someone if i didn’t get to see it!

you’ll have it in 24 hours. could only put in 350, took a beating at my weekly poker game sunday. K’s and J’s cracked and flopped set of 10″s and lost. I chose no bonus option, the hell with rolling over 1100, I’ll double up this weekend and take out my initial deposit without having to wager. The only thing going on right now is baseball, and thats half rollover, so I’d have to bet 2200 to make withdrawal. I gamble every day, and don’t feel like having my winnings tied up!!
enjoy Mike!

by the way, look for a WW showdown between GSP abd BJ for new years, Tito will resign, the only place he’ll get guaranteed money and after Jardine and machida lose, who knows who will get next shot!

sherk deserves it. wandi will move down and jacob will be gone. ive been saying for quite some time now that b.j will call out a.silva not gsp after he smokes sherk and im sticking to that. i dont know if it will happen but b.j. will fight anybody if dana lets him.

Here’s my humble take:

Should Sean Sherk have received a title shot coming off a suspension?
Definetly not, instead fight either Florian again or Huerta for #1 contender spot.

If BJ Penns wins should he move up to welterweight?
No, the 155lbs division has the most depth in the UFC and there are quite a few good fighters that’d deserve a title shot sooner or later.

Will this truly be Tito Ortiz’s final fight in the UFC?
Yes, no doubt about it. Except Ortiz pulls something off like calling out Dana in the post-fight interview for a dare.

What becomes of Ortiz after Saturday night
Free Agent, might sign with EliteXC or be featured on Affliction’s second card, if it happens.

If Machida wins should he face the winner of Rampage/Griffin
No, he is not ready yet. He should face Henderson if he’s still participating in 205.

Which Keith Jardine will show up against Wanderlei Silva?
Swinging-for-a-lucky-punch-Jardine, unfortunately Murdering-You-In-The-Cage-Silva will be his end.

If Silva loses will he move down to middleweight?
Definetly, maybe to face Hendo there again.

Is Thiago Silva the best kept secret in the UFC’s light heavyweight division?
Absolutely, although this also speaks about how weak the division has become, without taking anything away from him here.

Is Soku the real deal or just a two-hit wonder?
The Real Deal, unfortunately another one with cage jitters. 2 fights should be enough to adjust thou, time to start punching holes into opponents again.

Here’s my humble take:

Should Sean Sherk have received a title shot coming off a suspension?
Hell no! Josh Barnett beat Couture for the title, tested positive for roids and he hasnt managed to get back in the UFC yet, but since Sherk is the only chump stupid enough to defend the title for like $25,000…Dana loves a cheap champion.

If BJ Penns wins should he move up to welterweight?
No Way! THere are so many great match ups for him at 155 lbs, and he would be the favorite in every single one of them….He needs to stay at 155 lbs and put his stamp on that division for ever…. Go on a crazy winning streak and set a record of title defenses in a row that no other lightweight will ever beat!

Will this truly be Tito Ortiz’s final fight in the UFC?
Yes, and its about Time… All he does is talk, but he never backs it up against any top guys. He hangs on to the fact that he hasnt lost to anyone except for Chuck n Randy in the past couple of years, but he hasnt fought anyone really. Forrest and Rashad are good fighters, but they werent the fighters that they are today, when Tito beat them

What becomes of Ortiz after Saturday night
Who the hell cares? Dont believe the crap he says about moving on to possibly fight Fedor or Kimbo….he is a lil Biotch! Dana had to drag him into the Octagon and lock the doors shut to get him to fight chuck, dont be foolish enough to ever believe that he would accept a fight against someone who hits hard

If Machida wins should he face the winner of Rampage/Griffin
No, the winner of Wandy/Jardine should fight Rampage next, While Machida/Tiago Silva fight for the next shot, and by then Chuck and Shogun will be ready to fight to determine the next contender.

Which Keith Jardine will show up against Wanderlei Silva?
THE BRUTAL ONE!!!! WAR WANDERLEI

If Silva loses will he move down to middleweight?
Doesnt matter who he faces or what division its in it will be a very exciting match as long as he is involved.

Is Thiago Silva the best kept secret in the UFC’s light heavyweight division?
Maybe, but not in my eyes….He is no secret to me, I am a big fan…that kid is just Nasty….He is a very skilled Warrior who loves to bang, all he needs to do is take English lessons and he could become a STAR in AMERICA

Is Soku the real deal or just a two-hit wonder?
Soko is for real. Keep in mind he is 23, could you imagine him at 28? Scary! I think he will show what he is made of tomorrow against a very durable and underrated Nakamura

I agree on most of the judgements here, but I’ll still give my two cents.

Sherk deserve a title shot?
-No doubt, he is 32-2, hadn’t lost in a couple of years and already had beaten Florian who at the time is the number one or number two contender to face the winner or this bout. Also its hard to imagine anyone else at 155 really being able to make a good fight against Sherk.

BJ move to WW?
No, he does this to often and needs to actually stat his dominance. Of course he can fight anyone anywhere, but can he consistantly win to clear out a division. That is what I’d like him to do, then think about moving up

What becomes of Ortiz after Saturday night?
Hopefully he’s never seen from or heard from again, I don’t think he’ll ever be a top 10 contender again

Should Machida face the winner of Rampage/Forrest?
No he shouldn’t, he should get more fights in however he is the only logical fighter to deserve the shot except for maybe Jardine but we have to wait to see if Jardine can beat Wandy, keep in mind that Wandy does not deserve a title shot for one win

If Silva loses will he move down to middleweight?
I think he might move down win/lose, the UFC has taken alot of his arsenal away from him and he’s less of a beast because of it, but if he moves down a weight class people will be ducking their heads… all except for Silva who will welcome the challenge

Ya - I’m a big supporter of Thiago as well. As much as I want to see him fighting the top 5 in the division I actually think the UFC has helped him by not throwing him in the deep end right away. He is still working on his stand up and these fights with lesser opponents are helping him become more experienced before he is in the spotlight. If he wins (or when) tonight he’ll be in the big draw matches. I still wanted him to be the first to pound Rashad but oh well.

Great take on everything YouTapped. I’m very curious to see where Ortiz is going afterwards since he has made insane decisions throughout the past. If he does continue on with the UFC some way or another, it wouldn’t surprise me.

Tito really inspired me to approach MMA fighting and I started training about two years ago while I’ve been on a training regiment from recently and it’s also really helped me. Do you know of any others out there?

I also recently went through a company called for my most recent MMA gear and they have such phenomenal service. I wasn’t really sure what to exactly purchase so I gave them a call and they guided me throughout everything step-by-step. And from that I also compared their prices to others out there and I found that they have such awesome deals. Rock on!

Hope everyone has a great weekend and enjoy the fight tomorrow, I know I will.

Should Sean Sherk have received a title shot coming off a suspension? Absolutely, he has proven himself as one of the best in the world.
If BJ Penns wins should he move up to welterweight? I think that he should face the winner of Huerta/Florian and then move up to face St. Piere. He should though drop back down and stay at 155 after the Piere rematch.
Will this truly be Tito Ortiz’s final fight in the UFC? Only god knows what Ortiz is going to do. With all this talk I cant wait to find out.
What becomes of Ortiz after Saturday night? My guess: Win=He will move to XC to eventually fight Kimbo. Lose=Maybe fight in another organization but concentrate primarily on coaching and profiting on his camp.
If Machida wins should he face the winner of Rampage/Griffin? Depends on the Wandy/Jardine fight. If Jardine wins he needs an immediate title shot no matter the outcome of Rampage/Griffin. If Wandy wins and Rampage wins we need to see that rematchhappen. But if Wandy wins and Griffin wins then we should see Griffin /Machida. Those are the some great matchups.
Which Keith Jardine will show up against Wanderlei Silva? Jardine is always a great fighter he just got knocked out by an extremely hard hitting guy that he underestimated.
If Silva loses will he move down to middleweight? He will be forced to by the UFC. They had Hendo do it when he said he wouldn’t.
Is Thiago Silva the best kept secret in the UFC’s light heavyweight division? We have got to see him fight better competition. I agree with Rashad.
Is Soku the real deal or just a two-hit wonder? He doesn’t have enough pro fights to tell. We will see soon.
Just my opinion. Be nice.

Should Sean Sherk have received a title shot coming off a suspension? Yes, he was the champ and I dont think he needs to get back up to that position especially if he really ddint take steroids.

If BJ Penns wins should he move up to welterweight? Not yet there is enough good competition in lightweight.

Will this truly be Tito Ortiz’s final fight in the UFC?
Hopefully it will be his last fight period

What becomes of Ortiz after Saturday night? shitty reality tv and b movies

If Machida wins should he face the winner of Rampage/Griffin? If he wins I think he should be the number 1 contender

Which Keith Jardine will show up against Wanderlei Silva?
hopefully it’s not his chimpanzee style

If Silva loses will he move down to middleweight? I think he should but he wouldnt fight Anderson Silva because they used to be from the same camp

Is Thiago Silva the best kept secret in the UFC’s light heavyweight division? IDK why people say that. His first fight he didnt even fight, his second fight he was losing until drwal gassed, and his 3rd fight he gnp a guy who had no ground game. So he may be good we just havent seen it yet

Is Soku the real deal or just a two-hit wonder?
he’s a rookie with a lot of potential

Tito will be back. Whatever animosity there is between him and Dana, whether it’s real or just for the cameras, will be set aside when they realize they make too much money together to separate. He will get fights with guys looking to crack the top 5, talk them up, lose most of them and keep putting large checks in his pocket.

Wandy/Jardine is the most intriguing fight on the card. We all know Wandy is going to show up in shape, but which Keith Jardine will show up tommorow night? I would argue that his serraesque loss to houston was nothing but a fluke and since then he has proven himself to be top 5 in the world. Still, I’m rooting for Wandy simply because losing four fights in a row could put an end to one of the greatest MMA careers in history. I know he’s got the talent, but is his heart still in it?

Jardine will continue his climb

From now on Tito will fight in profitable freak shows( vs. kimbo, and whoever else wants to cross the MMA border).

BJ Penn will rule the LW division for as long as he’s interested

And you can throw Suko into the same barrell as H. Alexander and T. Martin - these dudes can throw some bombs but lack any consistency
