I’m sick of it too Tapout. The guy fought in backyards and carparks with no refs. Basically one step away from death matchs. He’s earned his right to be on any commercial he wants to be and in any cage he chooses to brawl in. Guys like him will be things of legend if the sport becomes as sanitised as if might end up being. Let’s take a few of the young guys out of the commercial system they have learned to fight in and put them in a South Central backyard fighting bare knuckle. I think they might struggle to adapt nearly as quickly as Kimbo has visa versa. Suck it all in kimbo, you’ve earned it!

There’s only a few of us Rilly that see this man trying to come up in MMA. I have no earthly idea why people hate on this cat some much. Hell, give a “Bum” some credit. The man is trying to make a living and so many people hate on this man that it’s unbelievable!

What would AA,Chuck,Randy and my goodness Fedor do to the same guys Kimbo fought in the street? Kimbo will get owned by anybody in the top 15. Not that I don’t like him, I do. But as a MMA fighter he is not a treat at all.

by looking at kimbo, you would never think that he is a genuine cool kat. You know u have made it big when u r having people hating or at the very least talkin about you after only 2 or 3 MMA fights, great job KIMBO!!!!! the ones hating seem to..chuckle… be lidell fans so not like we can take it personal lol.

anyone who keeps sayin “all i have seen kimbo fight are cans and bums” are very ignorant to say the least, considering hes only fought like all of 3 times…what do u expect out from 3 fights, make the assumption once hes fought a few more. BUt then again, u guys are the same ones who have bashed FEDOR fighting cans eventhough u never knew or had seen the guy fight up until a year ago.

Comment by naturalshadow

I don’t think anyone would mind if he had only fought cans in his first 3 fights, but when you are hyped as a man who “fights the best in mixed martial arts”, it gets a bit old really quick. I know that Brock Lesner also got a lot of hype, but he was fighting Frank Mir in only his second fight. If a fighter is willing to take on that type of competition, then let him have the hype. Hopefully Kimbo will fight someone good after this fight, especially since they are doing fights with DREAM.

Comment by PW
2008-05-21 08:47:18

He needs to take two steps up in competition just to get to the cans. The guys he’s fought so far and his opp. on May 31 are closer to being wet paper bags than cans. He doesn’t need to fight a top 10 guy at this point, but there is a whole lot of space between the top 10 and the clowns’ asses he has fought. I don’t even know that Elite has a solid HW fighter to put him against.

my only problem is the fact that he’s fought cans. people that everyone knew he would beat so that Shaw wouldn’t ruin his investment. i don’t expect him to fight top 10 guys, i expect him to fight people on the same skill level. have him fight other guys that have less than 5 fights so its competitive.

LOL these commercials are funny….Good luck Kimbo, you have to admit the guy is entertaining, but come on, does anbody really seriously think that just because Kimbo is being promoted to much that it makes him a legit threat to top HW mma fighters??? I don’t, I know he only stands a puncher’s chance against the top guys.

Give the guy a break, he doesn’t pick his oponents, his doesn’t do the marketing for Elite XC and he doesn’t claim to be the best, Gary Shaw is to blaim for all of that. Kimbo seems like a good guy that is taking mma seriously, Gary Shaw is setting him up for failure and is pimping him out as the next huge thing in the sport.

My only question to everyone who says they can’t wait till he loses. What if he doesn’t? Not saying he won’t, but he could learn well and fast.

But lets break it down- it is said that mma has past Matt Hughes up because he has no standup, Kimbo will never be anything because he has no ground game (as if he can’t learn one atleast a sprawl,Brock on the other hand is awesome, because he has a wrestling background, no standup, 1 mma fight made 250 grand to fight his second fight but that was o.k. Bottom line is you don’t like Kimbo so you bash him, you like Brock so you make excuses for him adnit it.

Comment by naturalshadow

I don’t hate Kimbo, just the hype. As for Brock, his second fight was Frank Mir! You can’t compare Frank Mir to a tomato can like Bo Cantrell.

Comment by Knowitall
2008-05-21 10:23:41

Up until that fight everyone thought and was saying Frank was washed up,you know I know that Dana White gave Frank to Brock as supposed gimme fight, it just backfired. I’m not a Kimbo fan, I just believe that everyone should have to hold the same standard

Brock is 0-1 in the ufc yet is said to be headlining the event latter this summer, over the likes of Kenny Florian and Roger Huerta. Yet you still make the analogy that it’s still ok. gimme a break

I also wish someone would give their analogy about my first post with Matt, Kimbo, and Brock.

Not true at all. If Brock would have fought a bum in his first fight, done well and then lost- well then he sucks, who cares? There were a lot of Brock haters before that fight (I being one of them) but he had a great performance in his SECOND fight against a former heavyweight champion. If Kimbo fought anyone with a ground game like Frank Mir’s- he wouldnt get any punches in and he would tap out right away.

I like Kimbo but I agree that Gary Shaw is promoting mma like he does boxing. He doesn’t have enough faith in the sport and is throwing everything into Kimbo. Stupid typical modern day boxing mentality

Even though I am a true MMA fan, I still like Kimbo. Rising from the streets to stardom is the American dream. Eventually, Elite XC will run out of has-been and freak-show fighters and they will have to put Kimbo against someone good. I don’t know all the heavy-weight in EliteXC, so I would be curious to know what fighters in that organization others think Kimbo should fight.

Comment by PW
2008-05-21 08:57:40

I just looked through the EliteXC roster, and it looks like the only HWs are Bo Cantrell, whose ‘fight’ against Kimbo didn’t even last long enough to be a rodeo event, Bigfoot Silva and Ricco Rodriguez, who I think are still too advanced for Kimbo at this point, and Cabbage Correira, who is another striker. Cabbage probably makes the most sense at this point because his style plays right to Kimbo’s strengths, but he’s much better than the spares Kimbo has already fought and will actually hit back. Somebody else that I think makes sense would be Jake O’Brien. He’s not very good, but he will take Kimbo down and force Kimbo to use the skills besided punching that he has presumably learned from Bas.

It really doesn’t matter how legitimate Kimbo’s skills are in relativity to the rest of the heavyweight division. Right now he’s good for the sport bcause h’s bringing in new fans. Commercial was great, hope there are some exciting fights.

For the first time ever I’m pretty pumped to see a woman’s mma match. Go Gina!

I’m 100% behind EliteXC in this. I’m a diehard MMA fan and I know Kimbo isn’t one of the elite fighters, but his star quality is undeniable and Shaw has done a great job with him and will do well with Gina Carano in getting eyeballs on the sport.

I do feel that any publicity is good publicity for MMA at this point because most people don’t realize how talented MMA fighters are, like Robbie Lawler and Nick Diaz. They will once they see them on CBS.

The UFC doesn’t build “stars” as well as EliteXC in my opinion, and you could see it by the way they threw Brock Lesnar to the wolves and killed his mystique right off the bat. The casual fan had no idea that Brock wasn’t any good, but thanks to Dana White and Frank Mir, they do now. If Shaw was in charge, Brock would be whooping cans and building his name to the common fan, which in turn gets people more interested in his next fight, which then gets more eyeballs on the sport of MMA.

More people know who Kimbo Slice is than Anderson Silva, go ahead and ask your family, your coworkers. You’ll see what I mean. So obviously EliteXC is doing something right. I hope they kick ass on CBS and grow the awareness of the sport on such a grand stage as CBS.

Well, said Cory81… MMA fans need to chill out on Kimbo, and enjoy the well promoted spectacle. New fans will soon be directed to the UFC, to watch the best… however some of the best in the heavyweight division maybe joining Elite XC soon!

Good point about Brock… one thing about MMA though, unlike boxing, there’s always a decent chance anyone, including Kimbo can be ‘dropped’ by any no-name.

How exactly does losing to a former champion and current No. 1 contender make Brock no good? Maybe he should get a little credit for requesting a challenging fight right off the bat instead of asking for a uy who would take a dive. Brock was winning that fight pretty handily until Mir pulled off an unbelievable submission that maybe three HWs in the world could have executed.

And as far as that idea that any publicity is good, I disagree there too. Dana White has worked his a$$ off to get MMA sanctioned by as many state athletic commissions as possible and get the mainstream public to view MMA as something more than a no-holds-barred human cockfighting brawl. No you have some d-bag promoter like Gary Shaw, who thought MMA was a joke of a fad until he realized he could cash in on it, promoting events as no-holds-barred human cockfighting brawls. People like Shaw make it impossible for casual fans and the general public to take MMA seriously.

If you knew nothing of MMA and heard of a fighter being billed as “a street-fighting sensation” what would you think of him? Dana White and UFC promote title fights, contrasting styles, fights to move the winner into title contention. Shaw is promoting this entire event around a street fighter pummeling a can that Shaw stuck in front of him. To me, this is no different than trying to draw new fans to NASCAR with the possibility of a fiery crash.

All your concerns are legit PW, I think the difference will be the commentating and how well the event is operated. Boxing has had a champion of a thug in Mike Tyson for years and was successful. MMA could be no different, depending on how well the the event is broadcast and how exciting the fights are.

There is a ton of speculation as to who should be on this card, White, UFC etc… but this is the hand that got dealt… so lets see if they FUCK IT UP or NOT!

Well with EliteXC loosing 27 mil. and maybe not surviving this year, Gary Shaw is putting it all on Kimbo. I didn’t understand it at first, but I read on yahoo sports that EliteXC was going under, then it made sense. If all the people that saw Kimbo on youtube would watch him on EliteXC then they can make it through the year. Thats why Shaw has put so much effort into promoting Kimbo. Still, I always appreciate a good KO!!! and thats why I’ll still watch Kimbos fights.
