Quoteworthy:

“The American Top Team lightweight will undergo surgery as early as Friday in the United States and expects a three- to four-month layoff. Calvancante anticipates a return to Dream — the collaborative promotional effort between Fight Entertainment Group and Pride’s former staff — by year’s end. His downtime could be put to good use as a scouting period.”

One of the top lightweight mixed martial arts fighters on the planet — Gesias “JZ” Calvancanti — will undergo knee surgery to repair a torn ACL knee injury, which will keep the 24-year-old star on the sidelines for up to four months. “JZ’ just dropped a unanimous decision to Shinya Aoki during the 2008 Dream Lightweight Grand Prix quarterfinals; however, the report indicates that he is interested in challenging “the last lightweight standing” upon his eventual return toward the tail end of 2008.

3-4 months seems alittle short for an acl surgery. Recovery is usually 6 months to a year.

THat’s exactly what I was thining. Its ‘typically’ a year before being back close to full strength. Of course that time is always being shortened by technilogical advances, but 4 months?

Or perhaps he is just a fast healer - in that case, it makes sense to be a fighter.

Calvancante and Jacre are the two Brazilian fighers I wish most to be in the UFC. Always rumors floating around Jacre, but not so much JZ. He already trains in the states, whats the hang up? $ $ $

Maybe it isn’t a serious tear, just a minor one. kind of like how a sprain or minor break doesn’t take as long to heal as a compound fracture.

Actually sprains take longer to heal than any of those you listed. A tear can be repaired, and a bone can be set, but a sprain is a stretching of the ligament therfore it must heal to full strengh naturally. Besides think about it, is it easier to repair a torn elastic strap or one that has been stretched to the extreme?

if it where a minor tear it would not need surgery.

ViolentMike: I have a feling we will see Jacre in the UFC by 2009. I have no proof to support this claim, just a gut feeling. As you probably know he spends lots of time in Vegas recently helping wanderlei prepare for his fights over at extreme Couture. i really think he will be in the UFC sooner rather then later.

I think he is ready for the UFC RIGHT NOW and will shock my of the UFC’s top 10 middleweights. His mma ju jitsu is amazing and his athletic ability is very under rated….This kid is a freakishly athletic dude who Forrest has stated has very heavy hands….Coming from a strict ju jitsu background, I am happy that he has been KO already and has come back strong since then….His striking is very improved and I am sure wanderlei will turn him into a sharp striker.

I really hope that they match up Jacre vs. Mayhem in the 2nd round of the grand prix. Mayhem’s ju jitsu is highly advanced and it will be interesting to see how it matches up with a Phenom like Jacre…That would make an awesome fight and I feel ashamed as a Mahem monkey to say that Jacre would win that fight!

As for JZ..3-4 months worries me because you know I am a big fan!

I don’t even know this guy. Man, I really gotta work on my all-around MMA knowledge game. I got a strong ground game (UFC and EliteXC) but I gotta work on my stand up (Dream).

I remember Miller’s loss to GSP and that was it for him. He took GSP to a decision and had a smile on his face the whole time after losing.

I wonder what Dana White’s stance is on fighters he’s let go of comming back later in their careers after good showings in other venues.

I can see a Miller vs. Fitch, Miller vs. Sanchez, Miller vs. Karo being very exciting fights.

And for Jacre, I’ve seen a few youtube vids on the guy. Its amazing how the UFC doesnt have a slam dunk guarantee on signing fighters anymore. With all the other competition, I dont know if that’s a good thing or a bad one.

Are they sure it’s not an MCL injury? 4 months is hella fast.

i don’t think mayhem is even in the grand prix. he just fought an exhibition match.
i’m picking jacre to win the whole thing barring a huge mistake on his part.

I thought 4 months for torn ACL is being hopeful, glad other posters think so too.
