“They’re pumped to have me back because they never wanted to lose me in the first place. We haven’t talked about the money or length of contract yet, but I’ll definitely be in the WEC. They’re planning to get me on their next big event after their June event, probably in August…. I don’t think it’s too bad of a thing for me to be going to the WEC. There are great fighters there, too. I need to keep learning and working on my game, and the WEC is a great place to do that. I can’t complain about what’s happened, because have I put in as much time and effort as other people who have gotten to the UFC? No, I haven’t. But I’m going to keep working on it as much as I can.”

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season six 170-pound runner-up, Tommy Speer, is headed for the Zuffa-owned World Extreme Cagefighitng (WEC) promotion. The “Farm Boy” was released after his 51-second knockout loss to Anthony Johnson at UFC Fight Night 13.

This guy has a weak chin. He might be a little dumb as well. I could be wrong.

No, you’re pretty much dead on. I’d also add that whatever physical strength Speers has is better suited for cow tipping than MMA.

LOL, I’m sure they’re really excited to have you, after your unbelievable last two performances. First thing you sould do is dump Matt Hyges and get someone that is a well rounded to train you. I can’t believe this guy really thinks they’re pumped

I agree. If he doesnt DUMP Hughes, he wont ever develpoe as a true mixed martial artist. THe only reason Hughes was ass successful as he was is because he fought in an era where you could find success being 1 dimensional….That era is gone. Hughes in his PRIME could not compete against Today’s mixed martial artists!

Well he did beat GSP and Bj within the last three years or so. Not bad. Those are two P4P best in the world sooooo??? I’m not a huge fan of his but the hate for this guy is ridiculous. Think objectively.

Very true. He has accomplished more than just about anyone in his career. Fan or not, he deserves respect.

Unless he switches coaches and training, Speers won’t do anything in the WEC either. He’s incredibly strong, but he’s also the definition of one dimensional.

The last time he fought, he had Matt Hughes in his corner. I think that’s good company, he just needs more time and experience. the WEC is the best place right now.

good company?? Matt hughes (while very dominant) is one dimensional. That won’t work in todays mma. He needs a trainer/coach that isn’t a wrestler

Won’t work? The only one to beat him in the recent past is GSP. That is not anything to be ashamed of. After he wins his next fight, he is going to kill Serra, like he would have the first time.

I think MMA has moved past guys like Matt Hughes. I respect him a lot but his wins are more from raw talent than good training. Fighters today aren’t going to let you push them down and punch them in the face like a few years ago.

MMA has moved past Matt Hughes? what are yout talking about, this guy has both submission and TKO winsin his records.
Ok, mention 3 guys in the welterwieght division that can easily get past Matt Hughes apart from GSP? ok, make it 2.

His TKO wins are either from knocking dudes out with slams or pounding on them when they’re stunned from slams. The subs are from RNCs, applied after a slam. Basically he can’t win if he doesn’t pick a guy and dump him on his head.

and that’s bad because….

No one bitches about Rampage’s trademark slams. Granted he has a way better standup game than Hughes, but the running power slam is a trademark of Hughes. I love the slams and I hope he continues to slam fools and pound them out.

I’m with ANONYMOUSF*CK,

Name 2 WW’s that can EASILY get passed Hughes apart from GSP???

He knocked out George, who has nice standup, I dont think he is as one dimensional as everyone says, and he sure doesnt deserve the shit hes getting on here. I chalk up his UFC losses to two reasons, style matchups and nerves. Danzig was too well rounded and Anthony was a better wrestler with better hands, they both will be bad matchups for a lot of people. I think WEC is a good move. He can slowly start becoming more accustomed to bigger and bigger crowds (which I think was a major problem with him), and get some wins and some confidence.

LOL at first I thought you meant Hughes KO’s GSP, but you’re talking about that “star studded” show where one guy is still fighting right. I know guys it’s more than one, but cmon, this guy has zero stand up…or did you see something (in 50 seconds) that I missed?

He needs to leave the HIT, hughes training camp and get with a real camp that teaches stand up skills. Matt hughes has been in this sport for who knows how many years and his standup is medicore at best. Tommy is doing a disservice to himself by staying with hughes camp b/c all they teach is wrestling. He will be a one dimensional fighter as long he continues with that program. One function fighters will not survive in this sport like they did years ago, simply wont happen.

They’re pumped because they have another fighter who can provide them with some highlight reel knockouts. Don’t matter if it’s him getting knocked out as long as it excites the crowd right?

Wow, Matt Hughes is taking a beating on this thread. I’ve never liked his attitude, but I have total respect for his fighting abilities.

Some of you guys are acting like BJJ & striking became a part of MMA in the past year or two. Does anyone remember Gracie & Shamrock? BJJ & Striking has been a big part of MMA for a long time and Matt Hughes dominated.

As far as Tommy Spears goes, I think the WEC or EliteXC is a good place for him. He’s a big tough kid who just need to round out his skill set.

Hughes was definitely well rounded for his day - I seem to remember him submitting GSP via armbar (not something taught in wresting camp)and having Gracie in a submission before letting him off a broken arm.

With regards to Speers - before TUF was invented he wouldn’t even have been a blip on the radar. He is strong as an ox but has no real game and will just fade away over the next couple of fights as the TUF credits wear off.

I thought Speer fought in the WEC prior to TUF. Didn’t he beat a guy at WEC 27? I am sure there are good matchups for him that they can book. It’s not like he’s going to get a win and then fight Condit. Condit would submit him withing 3 minutes at this point.

Tommy did fight in the WEC before TUF and he knocked out one of their main fighters. The guy was supposed to be one of their best and is all about BJJ and Tommy pushed him around and dominated him and with about 30 seconds left he knocked the guy out.

Regarding Hughes I had a chance to meet him at the TUF finale and he seemed like a great guy. My mom and brother got to hang out with him and talk with him during a team hughes training session before the TUF finale and they had nothing but nice things to say about him. So you people who have never met him and have only see the way he acts on camera need to back off. He’s a fighter he needs to have an attitude.

Tommy is a young fighter, hasnt had alot of MMA experience or fights. He has good heart and i can see him developing into a good fighter. I saw him fight in the WEC and he KO’D a guy, it was a good fight, so he does have talent, and he does have a good chin, look at his last fight, he took some hits before he was out

tommy is good…but he needs a lot of work. i’m the same way, i have a great wrestling background and am very strong…just gotta work on my standup…but in my weight class i got power like kimbo…just gotta learn better ways to use it and BJJ.

I agree with Clint he is young and hasn’t done anything wrong to get such critisism. He took second on TUF and in his first pro fight which was in the WEC against one of their premiere fighters, who supposed to be great in BJJ, in his weight class, Tommy threw him around and knocked him out. Look for it online or somewhere it shows that he has some talent, even if it is raw.
