Slow down there Huerta! I am a big fan, but 1 step at a time. You have florian and then BJ Penn in your way 1st.

The funny part is BJ Penn might be te man keeping him from accomplishing his 2 goals because BJ really wants both the Lightweight and Welterweight titles and BJ could do it.

If Huerta wants to accomplish that goal, he may have to defeat Penn at 155 lb and 170 lb….Easier said then done!

Still I am a big huerta fan!

Aspirations are ok. The headline makes it seem like he’s calling out BJ and GSP, but that’s not the case. He just said that he would love to eventually move up on weight. If he had said that he can beat Bj and GSP, that would be one thing, but Roger’s young so he can have dreams and aspirations, BUT he must take everything one fight at a time.

I too have FLorain winning Roger easily, however, this is what I see in Florian. A guy that wants to be a big pull and spotlight guy for as long as possible. Number one contendar beating those guys is a much better financial descision then losing to the champion and losing your pull due to being written off.

Avoid being beaten by Penn as long as possible, stay financially appealing as long as possible, which is why he called out Huerta, not Penn.

Gotta beat 2 of the greatest MMA fighters alive in BJ Penn AND GSP?

You’re a good fighter, and I’m a fan - but work on taking out Florian before even thinking about Penn

Your performance vs Guida was good, but he had the better of you in 2.5 of 3 rounds - you got work to do bro. Good luck though.

Exactly!! Think of this though should he get the 155 title by the time he gets a would be shot at 170 title, it could be 2 to 3 years in the future, where GSP would be going up to MW and take on Silva.

Talk about looking past your opponent… WOW! I think Roger is great and I enjoy his fights but come on now, you have Sherk and BJ in your division and looking up to WW there’s a boatload of talent there before you even get a title shot. One step at a time….

Ok hes getting a little out of control now. Everyone needs to have goals. But you have to get a sense of how good you are before you make big statements. Lets see him beat a couple high quality fighters first. He would be no contest for B.J. or G.S.P. at this point.

Comment by Smokes
2008-05-09 13:32:24

But if you go into any fight thinking that you might not win it… then you are probably going to lose it. He has the same mentality as every fighter out there. I AM THE BEST. Period. He just shouldn’t have done an interview but if he beats Florian, he has BJ next so the question of if he can do it will be answered sooner rather than later. (Hopefully)

Huerta only needs to focus on Florian. I think Huerta will win this fight but for people claiming he has to beat Penn. People need to wait till Penn actually beats Sherk to say this. Although even if Penn lost I would still be happy to see a Huerta-Penn fight but I think the winners of the Penn-Sherk and Florian-Huerta fight will be facing each other as well as the losers. Just my prediction but best of luck to Huerta, he’s one of my favorite fighters and I can only hope to see him at the top some day.

Unlike everyone else in this thread, I am not a fan of Huerta. He’s made a career out of beating UFC newcomers. He was losing badly to Clay Guida until he landed the fight saving knee and I think he loses that fight more times than not. I’m suck of the UFC trying to shove him down our throats. He landed an illegal knee to the head against halverson and mike goldberg was hell bent on telling us it landed on the shoulder. Believe what you want.
I don’t doubt he has a ton of heart, but I think Florain should beat him. Florian has the more complete skill set.
Huerta stands no chance against BJ Penn or GSP.

I Think it has to do with him training with GSP. Huerta’s probably been sizing him up, and secretly scheming on how to defeat GSP. The funny thing is I don’t think he can even beat Florian. And Even less of a chance of beating Penn.

He wouldn’t get past either BJ Penn or Sherk.

Penn would murder him any way he wants.

If Guida can’t handle Guida for a little more than 2 rounds…how in the world is he going to handle Sherk?

Never mind GSP, Fitch or Koscheck.

Sorry Roger, you just don’t got it like that.

I’m almost willing to bet some decent money on Heurta vs Florian - I’m thinking his training with GSP and Greg Jackson will plug the holes in his game (sloppiness standing, and on the ground) and will maximize his natural abilities (overpowering strength, wrestling, cardio, standup and unwavering calmness under duress) He’s almost like GSP, just not as refined - but possibly mentally tougher.

He might overpower Florian from opening bell to decision.

Think about it guys ;)

Huerta has a lot of talent and is great to watch because he always brings it and never stops trying to crush his opponent. However, I think he is still a little naive, often gets himself into trouble and in Florian is fighting a shrewder fighter who will not let him off his mistakes. With more experience under his belt Huerta may well become a big deal but you dont get that from just training with GSP for a while, you get it through age, fights and learning from mistakes. I pick Florian but either way it will definitely be a good indicator of where Huerta is at.

2 years ago GSP had beaten BJP, Sherk etc and was the number 1 contender to Hughes. Huerta hasn’t beaten anyone of real note yet and has been run close by some gatekeepers (Guida, Garcia etc) I think Huerta still has a lot of learning to do before he can even be talked about in the same league as GSP. Don’t get me wrong, he is great to watch and you have to admire many of his qualities, just don’t think he is elite yet.

Cory - well, maybe not - they have alot of similarities, and if he beats florian - he’ll be in the #1 top contender spot at 24yo.

But ya - im alittle premature in comparing him to GSP right now, especially with the level of competition he’s fought.

I’ll concede this point - but i still think he has a decent chance at the upset vs florian

It’s a longshot but it doesn’t hurt to aim high. What’s not cool is if he was dropping names, but he wasn’t. It’s a crazy sport. After Randy lost twice to Chuck, how many thought that at his age, he would be able to not only move up in weight, but win and defend the title in two dominating fights? Roger has a ways to go, but time is on his side. Plus, he has a lot of heart, athleticism, determination, etc. Those are things you can’t teach. His weaknesses are workable.

Huerta is buying into his own hype. Big mistake. Clay Guida was Huerta’s only true test thus far and Clay took him to his limit. His biggest claim to fame is still the SI cover and until he accomplishes something else, he is still just an up and coming contender and nothing more.

i was thinking he could possibly take the 145 and 155 titles. 155 would be a bit of a stretch since he barely, barely got past guida. he seems a bit small too, even smaller than diego sanchez and sanchez himself is small for 170. one of the main reasons fitch was able to beat diego. the 145 from urijah faber is definately possible though.

Comment by randy murders
2008-05-09 17:01:36

you’d have to be nuts to actually believe he’d compete with urijah.. he might be a bit stronger than urijah but nowhere near the technique or speed i really doubt he’d make it out of a 1st round with him…

bj will get walked all over by sherk and even IF huerta gets past florian he wouldn’t contend with penn or sherk who both lost to gsp and matt hughes.. anyone at this point trying to climb the WW ladder wont be going up in weight not with alves, fitch, koscheck, sanchez, hughes, serra, and gsp there you’d be nuts to wanna go into the ufc for WW or MW for a title shot

think it will be between this and forrest/rampage for fight of the year, you guys think rogers wrestling has holes because guida took him down so many times, but roger even said that before the fight he was already burnt out, he went into the guida fight just trying to knock the shit out of him and got taken down a lot because of it, no one else has taken him down, but a well rested huerta’s game doesn’t have any holes, and there is no way he quits before kenny, i respect kenny and think he can probably take most of the other 155ers but he wont be able to “finish” roger, no body can he has too much heart and i might even give kenny the 1st or 2nd round, but in the third when the fight is on the line nobody attacks like huerta, he’s the best final round fighter i’ve ever seen, especially when he’s behind on the card.
