kimbo slice elite xcTonight ESPNs multi-subject news magazine show “E:60″ will re-air the episode that features street fighting sensation-turned Elite XC heavyweight star, Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson, which originally debuted in December 2007.

To check it out hit up ESPN in HD at 7 p.m. ET this evening.

The Kimbo segment of the hour-long show will lead off the program. In addition to the original segment that focused on Kimbo’s upbringing and path to becoming a mixed martial artist, ESPN has updated the program with discussion of his past fight with Tank Abbott, as well as his historic upcoming fight against James “The Colossus” Thompson on CBS later this month.

Also part of the original airing of this episode in December were stories on USC basketball player OJ Mayo, Base jumping, and innocent dogs caught up in the Michael Vick fiasco.

However, a recent report indicates that a new feature on Gina Carano will also likely be included in this episode, shining a bright spotlight on the network television debut of Elite XC on May 31.

“E:60″ is hosted by Tom Farrey, Lisa Salters, Jeremey Schapp, Rachael Nichols and Michael Smith.

i liked the original, he was humble and soft spoken. I know he’s been getting a lot of shit lately, but I think the UFC guys are backing him into a corner and like any other animal he’s biting. He knows that any top 10 HW and probably LHW would beat him, but how can he admit that. With Chuck and Dana talking so much shit, I can’t balme him for talking back. Too bad Dana won’t put his money where his mouth is, cross promote one time and prove Kimbo is a joke. Kimbo and Shaw said they do it, so who is talking the talkl but not backing it up!!

So, Kevin is it worth taking watching? Or is it the same story just repackaged?

I liked it the first time, and it says they added more. If you’ve ever watch e60, you’d know it’s short. The kimbo peice was in the last 15 minutes, that way the sucked all mma fans (kimbo’s youtube cronies) in for the full hour!

Kevin: Thats exactly what I was trying to say the other day. People want to get on him because he is starting to talk trash, but what can he do? U got people from other organizations (that he cant fight) like Chuck and Dana talking smack about him. Could anyone really not expect him to answer back!

Like you said….If Dana has got something to say about fighters from other organizations….he needs to shut his F’in mouth and co promote an event and prove it to the fans. I think he looks like a real idiopt when he is talking trash about fighters in other organizations that he is not willing to match his fighters up against. Dana, please put up or shut up!!!!

yeah john, I sat and thought about it, and agree with you. My wife gets pissed because my thought process always includes her input (but she has more going on than mma). But she watched this guy fight (hated him) and talk (was very surprised). He’s no a bad guy, but he’s old and fighting nobodys!

Just read a quote of Kimbo saying he would have won all the early UFC events. Did a stand up guy ever win? This guy is delusional!!

The UFC should pick up Mike Tyson for there HW division. He’d be a big draw and with more credentials than Kimbo.

I totally understand the real mma fans beef with kimbo. I have the same issue, that this guy is just a street fighter who’s starting out in mma and is getting all this hype. That’s totally true.

BUT, isn’t there also something to be said about the exposure the guys on TUF get?? Let’s face it, these days, the guys that make the tuf show aren’t the best non-signed fighters out there. Some guys don’t even have a handful of pro fights before they get picked. I mean look fighters like Jason McDonals and Anthony Johnson, who tried out for seasons 3 and 6 I believe. They are both much more accomplished than most of the guys on those shows but weren’t picked. It’s the same thing in that the ufc picks guys who will draw fans on camera for tuf, just like kimbo is drawing viewers b/c of his past. I for one, don’t care if he wins or loses his next fight but as long as he’s bringing attention to mma, and hopefully in a good way it will only help. The ole saying goes, any publicity is good publicity.

Well said.. plus, Kimbo does have some talent, whether that holds up against and accomplished MMA fighter is yet to be developed. However, in the meantime, maybe he can provide some exciting KO’s.

It’s like felony fights on youtube, fun not because these guys know how to fight… just because it’s entertaining. Kimbo’s fights, feel like he’s still on YouTube, when his fights reach the internet I just watch ‘em there for free.

I am not going to bash Kimbo per se but let’s remember two things.

1. Kimbo did lose a fight to Brian Gannon
2. Very recently Thompson was knocked out by Butterbean.

So, let’s not anoint him the king just yet.

Thompson is the perfect fight for Kimbo. All the casual fan will see is that he is a huge guy who looks like he could kick some ass. If they would look at the fights he has lost, they would also see that his chin is made of balsa wood. As soon as Kimbo connects, Thompson will fall like a ton of bricks. I hope his next fight is against someone like Rico or any other heavyweight Elite has worth mentioning. I am sure they would love to have him as their champion. He has had enough tune up fights.

2008-05-06 14:57:49

His next fight will be Ken Shamrock. they can hype that one easily. Don’t think gary shaw will risk having Kimbo get beat, especially with a cbs deal now. As long as Kimbo wins, elite can make money. I can’t see how everyone is getting sucked in to this false hype!! Now he’s saying he could have won the early UFC’s…oh yeah, we see how strikers fared back then. I really wish Dana would cross promote just once, nog vs. Kimbo, just to shut shaw and Kimbo up!!

I’m a hard core MMA fan from back in the days where MMA was called No Holds Barred - Only killing is forbidden.(Royce Gracie days)

And it amazes me that people nowadays in MMA do not welcome fighters from other backgrounds - WHY ?

That was the real reason why MMA existed:
boxer aginst wrestler
big against small

Tank Abott against Royce Gracie - anything goes!
Kimbo against Lesnar

That’s what MMA was all about in the beginning

Nowadays everything is about “credentials”, 10 000 weight division, several P4P best fighters, MMA rankings based only on the UFC ignoring brazilian and japanese fighters, not to mention other MMA organisations like EliteXC.

Actually back in the Tank was a HERO because of his street fighting background. Why do people just HATE kimbo’s street fighting background ?

Is MMA a sport for Saints or Harvard PhD graduates ?

2008-05-06 15:41:52

The reason UFC is where it is is because it did away with the ‘only killing is forbidden’ mentality. Before the Fertittas and Dana White got involved it was nothing but a rogue spectacle, with participation by legitimate trained fighters (Gracie, Shamrock) being the exception, not the rule. Now we can see MMA on TV every week. Now we get fighters from a variety of nationalities and backgrounds, so you still get disparate match-ups (wrestler vs. muay thai, BJJ vs boxer, etc.). The only difference is now we have weight classes and safety regulations. Various promotional companies put their product on TV because UFC secured sanctioning and licensing from as many state athletic commissions as possible, and they are still working for more. As far as Tank Abbott goes, he has a lifetime record of 9-14 and has lost 8 of his last 9 fights by various stoppages. How does that make him a hero? Gary Shaw is a sleaze merchant who is looking to do nothing more than capitalize on the internet fame of a guy who by all rights should be in prison right now to turn a quick buck and get out of the business.

the things you bring up are true, but are a big reason why the ufc almost failed completely. that is why people like john mccain called mma “human cockfighting”. sanctioning, weight classes and rounds are what saved the sport. the new way is not perfect but still alot better than the old way imo. i do miss the tournament style cards, but alot of times the best fighter or winner did not get advance due to injuries.

OK your points about guys like McCain and “human cockfighting” are valid points even though i personally prepared the older formats with tournaments and 10 minute ground games.(so i outed myself as hard core MMA)

You guys better check out the Frank Shamrock’s(Middleweight) first MMA fight against Bas Rutten(HW). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47PNe6I1cZg

Moving to another point:
Why are wrestlers (basically guys who like to take it to the ground) more respected in MMA than brawlers ?

Stand-up fighters are not regarded as MMA fighters
I for one think Tank was a full fighter and Kimbo as well.
Even though they all rely on stand ups.

Don’t get me wrong - i’m the first guy to get angry when the referees start to stand up guy s up again - JUST to keep the crowd entertained with stand ups ?

i can remember a story my high school ancient history teacher told me about him getting into a fight when he was in the army wita guy who was known to be a good boxer. he said he was afraid at first but someone told him “just tackle the guy, a boxer cant do anything bad to you if you wrestle him to the ground”. and thats what he did and he didn’t get his ass kicked. he was pretty much saying a good wrestler would beat a good boxer in a street fight anyday. a boxer cant do anything on his back. samething holds true today, if a fighter is a good striker but has no takedown defense, no wrestling or bjj experience, he’s gonna get beat quick in today’s mma world. i like strikers too, but they def have to be well rounded.

True strikers get plenty of respect. Liddell, Anderson, Wandy, Crocop, just to name a few. All Tank did was throw cowboy punches. There is a difference between a brawler and a true striker.

I would love to see Kimbo try to justify himself in this sport and get into a real fight with a true MMA fighter. A fighter that can make it through the original on-slot of haymakers and show him real MMA skill. I would see it as a Mir vs. Lesner fight where skills pay off in the fight. At this point I would love to see Kimbo vs. Tito or Mir or Lesner or a real test Forest or Rampage. Which any of those guys would show Kimbo as the amateur he really is at this stage of the game.
