Also: Roger Gracie vs. Yuki Kondo at Sengoku 2!

i can understand why it is banned. its a rival organization and not just a clothing brand anymore. its too bad fighters have to suffer from the loss of a potential or current sponsorship from affliction. with the cost of their products i bet fighters get a decent chunk of change for wearing it into the cage.

Wasn’t in work yesterday, and just skimmed thru the news I missed. The two things that caught my attention - KJ Noons talking about Nick Diaz, and the return of WILDMAN to the forums!!! Since its an old thread, but I still want to post, I will do so here:

MAN, I miss work for one day, and “Mr. KJ Noons” is running his mouth about Nick Diaz? WTF Does this kid know who he is, and does he know who Nick is? I will be the first to admit the Nick Diaz is right up there with my #1 favorite fighters, so I’m a lil biased, but I’ll try not to be.
Ever since the fight of Nick’s life, the Gomi fight of course, he just has not been the same. The fight against Mike Aina - that decision could have EASILY went to the hometown favorite, Mike Aina. I was actually suprised that Nick won. The fight against Noon’s, again Nick did not look like himself. KJ was OWNING HIM. Nick can take a fight to the ground when he needs to, and KJ is not an experienced MMA guy, he is a boxer, so how can his sprawl be so great already. And if he’s sprawling, then clinch and trip. The cuts did not lose Nick that fight - although a late Diaz submisstion is always a possibility. I was actually worried that this lil punk KJ was going to be the first fighter to KO Nick Diaz - that would be a shame. If KJ at his best fought Nick at his best, Nick would win 10 times out of 10.
For KJ Noons to think that he caused Nick to get the surgery is just ridiculous, and shows how inexperinced Noons is. Nick’s plastic surgery involved the removal of scar tissue that was built up over years - NOT one fight. If Nick had to get facial reconstuction (Rich Franklin-like) surgery, than that would be a different story.
Simply put, Nick has not been himself since the No Contenst with Gomi. I am sure that all of this talk about him smoking trees is really stressing him out - and that’s one of the main reasons he smokes to begin with - to calm down due to stress. Nick had a scheduled fight at the last EliteXC event but couldn’t fight due to medical marijuana license. Everyone else in his camp is super motivated and on a roll. His brother Nate is won of the hottest 155 lb fighters in the stacked division - he’s yet to lose in the UFC. Gilbert Melendez the Strikeforce LW champ looks unstoppable at 155. Outside of BJ Penn, I can’t think of many 155’s that would beat him regularly. *I really hope that a lot of you saw that StrikeForce on NBC episode that featured Melendez vs Clay Guida.* Jake Shields has been tearing it up and finishing his fights. He’s basically the ‘uncrowned’ WW champ of EliteXC. Gilbert and Jake are not only ready to compete in the UFC, but they’d be instant contenders.
But what is wrong with Nick? Once upon a time, he was the top Cesar Gracie fighter. I don’t think that the weed alone is enough to make Nick fight the way he’s been. I think that there must be something else going on in his life that he does not mention. He’s not one to make excuses, but he also doesn’t like to give credit to a fighter when he gets beat.
I would love to see a rematch between Noons and Diaz and would love the trash talk just as much. However, the fight will not be going down anytime soon - because Noons will lose to Yves Edwards.
This is the second time typing this post, I got some Lotus Notes Pop up window that erased my 90% finished post the first time so I most likely left some stuff out…

hey there you are mike. Couldn’t agree more. Nick is one of my favorite fighters, and just because guys cut him he loses. I understand the rules and why they stop the fights, but he can definitely take a beating and still win the fight! He needs to begin to start strong and finish!

I Myself am also a HUGE Nick Diaz fan aswell..I couldn’t agree with your analysis anymore VilolentMike…When I read that KJ article I was thinking the same shit…How could he say he is responisble for Nicks surgery??what a dumbshit..
But like you said VM, “there is something wrong” with Diaz..Nick should have made quick work of both Aina and Noons…I have to disagree with the Aina/Diaz fight possibly going the other way because Diaz had him in dominant posistion’s at the end of 2 of the 3 rounds, and had to have killed Aina on punch-stats..But I get what you mean..Diaz by no means looked like himself, and should have never went to decision..
The KJ/Diaz fight on the other-hand was a very disapointing fight to watch(being a Diaz fan)..
I turned to my wife and said the same shit you thought.”Diaz is going to get KO’d by this fool??”
Right of the bat Nick looked like shit, with his telegraphed takedowns.wtf…Thats why Noons defence looked so “great”..
I really hope whatever is wrong with him is over..We will know for sure after his next fight..If he fights the way he has for his 3rd time in a row, then something is definetly wrong!!
I hope he gets his shit together!!..WAR DIAZ..
Edwards is going to beat KJ, and then hopfully someone sets up Diaz/Noons-2..

He definitely didn’t look good against noons. I said the same thing to my wife. His punches were looping and I could have avoided them. Hopefully we’ll see the old nick diaz in june1

***MMA NEWS UPDATE***: Josh barnett vs. Pedro Rizzo 2 confirmed by Josh himself for Afflictions 1st card in July!

So far the card looks like this:

Fedor vs. Tim Sylvia
Josh barnett vs. Pedro Rizzo
Matt Lindland vs. TBA
Aleksander Emelienenko vs. TBA (I am assuming)
Ben Rothwell vs. TBA

Hopefully they match up Rothwell vs. Aleks

This might overshadow the UFC and become the event of the summer. Now all they have to do is find a venue to hold this event…Fingers Crossed EVERYONE!!!

Where is the fight going to take place?? They can announce all the fights and all the ridiculous pay outs, but I won’t buy into it until it happens. You’re a marketing major John, so you’ve taken economics, right? You can’t pay out more than you’re going to make and hope to run a successful business. This card SOUNDS great, and good for them if it happens, but with al the star power and all the money getting put out, no ppv money, how can this company make money. I don’t personally care if they make money as long as we get the fights, but no good business man (Mark Cuban) is going to put on a multimillion dollar show to lose money, just so the fans are happy.

I know thats only the strenght n power training so it shows no technique as in BJJ or anyfing, but that’s prrof enough to me that BJ could not hang with GSP

GSP would outwork him and throw him round the cage, just lke Sherk will

Whats this new boot affliction?
Never heard of it till now

2008-05-06 09:59:38

BJ will punish Sherk. And BJ can hang with BJ b/c he’s the most skilled fighter on earth. He’s not gonna be thrown around by GSP. This S&C work will help GSP’s explosiveness (for takedowns), his muscle endurance, and cardio so he’s just as good in the 5th round as he is in the 1st.

This is really good training. The only comparable strength training I’ve seen from an MMA athlete is Rich Franklin’s routine and Sherk/Lesnar’s routine in Minny.

There’s another video with GSP climbing a rope using only his hands lol

It’s in the GSP training in Albuqurque video that pops up as a thumbnail underneath afterwards. Definitely impressive athleticism.

GSP’s power and explosiveness has gone through the roof since he’s teamed up with his S&C coach, Jonathan Chaimberg. He only started working out with Chaimberg less than a year ago, and we’ve seen the results in his last 3 fights, looking better than ever against Koscheck, Hughes, and Serra. GSP just keeps improving at such a rapid rate that it’s scary.

Comment by Gord
2008-05-06 22:03:28

Again, you take the words out of my mouth and save me some typing. GSP always seemed to have the upper hand with his opponents in the grappling, but now he just mauls them. Before GSP went to Chaimberg, he could only do 10 pull ups with his body weight, which isn’t very impressive for any athlete. Though reps with the added 100lb dumbbell is very impressive.

anyone else find it funny that they put david loussau in the video as well?? this guy had all the tools to be a huge force in the MW division, but just never had his head in the game. Even after he got released from the ufc he has been a disappointment, seems like such a waste of talent, hopefully he can turn it around. he’s got as much athletism as gsp it seems like at times.

I don’t think it’s that strange. Seems like Loiseau is putting things together again. He’s looked good in recent fights, and has much better training now with Chaimberg for S&C and Loiseau is also going to be training a great deal with Team Jackson. He may be able to get back to being an elite fighter.

i dont think its wierd that the crow is in the video, but do agree w/your assesment of his career. i dont know how old he is, but i would like to see him make a run again in the ufc.he gave rich a good a fight as macdonald or okami(5rnds) and did alot better than lutter, so i dont think he was overrated. he was kind of a small mw so i think that has alot to do w/ failings. maybee a move to ww, maybee in the wec, i dont know? def needs to string together a couple of big wins to get back into the discussion.

Who?…hahaha. Just kidding. I hate being at work, I can’t watch the video until I get home. What’s so impressive about the hurdles? Is he jumping regular hurdles or does he have weights on or something?

Comment by Pat
2008-05-06 14:35:52

He was bunny-hopping the hurdles consecutively (ie two-footed and no running start). I’m sure a lot of track athletes do it regularly, but for an MMA athlete, it’s pretty good.

I like how the trainer emphasizes really SLOW movement on the eccentric contractions and explosive contractions on the concentric side - i think this is a kind of a new development in muscle training where slow going down, fast going up results in faster muscle production

Good job GSP and crew!

Comment by Pat
2008-05-06 14:39:50

I don’t think it’s as much about muscle production/atrophy/building as it is about creating muscle strength and endurance. The best examples are Olympic lifters. They are very strong (obviously) but are not as muscular as bodybuilders (even clean/natural ones).

Comment by Gord
2008-05-06 22:30:25

It’s not new, but it works great. The eccentric contractions account for up to 50% muscle growth so if you just let gravity do the work by dropping the weight fast, you are missing out on it’s effects. Explosive concentric contractions are great for developing power.
