carlos conditWEC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit (22-4) signed a four-fight contract extension with the Zuffa-owned promotion, according to USAToday.com.

“The Natural Born Killer” — who was a spectator at last Saturday’s UWC show in Washington, DC — made the announcement during the event. It must be noted that prior to the extension that Condit had one more fight left on his current deal.

It’s clear that locking Condit to a long-term deal means that the WEC sees him as one of its premier stars in the organization along with fellow champions Urijah Faber and Brian Stann.

Condit, in fact, is undefeated in the WEC and is riding a four-fight win streak. His last defeated Carlo Prater via submission in the first round at WEC 32 last February.

He’s quietly one of most underrated welterweights in the world and is awaiting his next opponent.

Maybe they were getting a little nervous about EliteXC swooping in and signing him…..they seem to be signing everyone else.

5 more WEC fights for Condit?!?!?!

That seems like too many to me. Condit is no doubt ready to make a splash in the UFC. Can he beat GSP right now, probably not, but I’d give him a better shot than I’d give Matt Hughes at the current moment. Condit is very well rounded, he is long for a WW, and has great cardio. Add up those variables and you have yourself a great fighter.

Its not like the WW division of the WEC is stacked with talent. They need to bring in the #1 contender from another organization to put together a championship fight. I don’t need to see Condit submit Brock Larson again to believe it!!

i think i might need to see him submit larson again to believe it…larson is an animal, i would not put it past brock larson to beat condit if they fought again…and i have to disagree that condit would have a better chance against gsp than hughes, i think thats just wrong even with hughes getting dominated twice, thats kind of like saying condit would beat hughes…i don’t think so, not yet…wec is perfect for him right now…i like him a lot, but he wouldn’t be in the top 8-10 ufc welterweights…that division is too stacked, he needs to add strength and experience and he’s getting that where he’s at right now…i know he has 26 fights, but he’s only 24 years old…theres no rush (no pun intended) to get him to the ufc right now

I hear ya on the Larson thing. But saying that Condit has a better chance at beating GSP than Hughes does, does not mean that Condit would automatically beat Hughes. THAT would be MMAmath, which does not work out….

I think that Carlos Condit would be UFC WW Top 10 immediately. I actually think he’s appearing on world wide top 10 lists, so thinking that he can’t crack UFC top 10 is pretty out there. I think that if Josh Koscheck can be Top 10, than Carlos Condit sure can. Of course Josh is the better wrestler. But when you compare other aspects of thier games, its advantage Condit, or even. Standup goes to Condit’s Muay Thai. BJJ goes to Condit. So where would Kos take the fight? Kos is only effective when fighting where he wants the fight to take place. When he is put in positions he doesn’t want to be, he doesn’t do as well. Which is an obvious statement, just look at the GSP fight.

Kos was scared to go to the ground with Diego and Dustin Hazelett. Condit’s BJJ I would put right in the middle of their’s (1. Dustin, 2. Carlos, 3. Diego), so Kos would not be comfortable enough with his submission defense to take the fight to the ground. So he would likely roll the dice and keep the fight standing, praying that he lands a wild haymaker and Condit goes down.

Maybe I’m just a Natural Born Killer fan and a Kos hater rolled into one, but how does everyone else see this fight going? I don’t see Kos being comfortable anywhere in this fight, hence, I see him losing.

VM: I think Condit can beat a couple of the top 10 welterweights in the UFC…. The only person I dont think he can beat is GSP, but it would be an interesting fight. Fitch might give Condit problems as well, but after that Condit has a good shot at beating all other welterweights.

Condit is capable of beating:
Marcus Davis
Alves (who as you all know, I have a man crush on lol)
Kos
Hughes
Karo vs. Condit would be interesting
Diego vs. Condit would be interesting.

Anyone that thinks he isnt ready to make a Splash in the UFC…Right now, is sadly mistaken.

Anyone hear any news on when/who my boy Akahiro Gono is fighting?

i’m reading my comments and hoping i’m not coming off as a condit hater, because i’m a fan of his, he’s got skills for sure, but josh koscheck would beat him most of the time…i know condit has some nice muay thai, but koscheck has shown more improvement in his standup than any other welterweight fighter in the ufc. people say he just throws haymakers and swings for the fences, but i think they just say that because his punches have so much heat on them when he misses. his entire stand up game is now considered good if you ask me, he’s got excellent kicks and we know the power. i think koscheck wins the stand up and controls condit with his strength. i know larson and some other guys were unsuccessful against condit despite their strenght advantage, but i think koscheck is a much smarter fighter than those guys. when was the last time koscheck was submitted? like three years ago against fickett and that was pretty much a ko with that knee, lets be real about that. i can’t believe i’m sticking up for kos because i really don’t like the guy, but you can’t argue his dominance. plus its hard to judge a guy in a fight against gsp, and i would say other than serra’s win of course, koscheck performed the best against gsp recently…i usually like to go with the wrestler over the jiu jitsu fighter espcially when there is a big strength advantage. i’m not saying a wrestler will always beat a jj guy, but the history of the ufc says wrestlers have a lot of success, i.e. couture, hughes, sherk, etc…of course jj is important, but i honestly feel a world class wrestler with mma experience will beat a world class jj fighter with mma experience the majority of the time…

You Condit Hater! LOL.

Nah, I don’t think your coming off that way all that much, you’re just calling it how you see it.

But I would like to point out that the ONLY reason that people (ESPECIALLY Joe Rogan) always talk about how IMPROVED Kos’s standup is, is because you need to think back to when he started. When was on TUF, he has worse standup skills than Dan The Howler Simmler and the TUF version of Matt Hamill. He had like no prior training for his standup game. So of course, his standup is going to improve a lot - he started from nothing.

For example, standup skill is measured on a scale of 1 - 100. Four years ago, Kos was about a 2 on the scale. Four years ago, Condit was trainnig Muay Thai, so for arguements sake, lets rate him back then as a 40. Since then, Kos has improved himself to a 60. That is a 58 point improvement. Over that same time period, Condit only improved (for agrument sake) 38 points. That means that Kos has improved more than Condit, but Condit’s skill level is at 78 and Kos’s is at 60. So over the past four years, Kos’s striking may have improved the most, but that certainly doesn’t make him a better striker.

“Koscheck is like a sponge” Had to throw a Rogan one liner out there…

i see what you’re trying to say, but i don’t think it proves condit wants to stand with koscheck or that he has a better stand up game just because his background goes back farther…i think koscheck always had good standup, he just had to actually train it…i honestly think he’s a solid stand up fighter and if he fought condit straight up standing i think he would win, he kicks and hits sooo hard, condit is methodical, but has no power…it would be an interesting fight

I do not see Condit being anywhere as close as you guys are making him out to be, he may be overrated and better then most think or know about, but that doesnt mean he can beat everyone except for GSP. I give him top 10 in teh WW, but not top 5.

This is what I would like to see when the WEC or UFC sign new contracts they should sign them as a ZUFFA exclusive contract so the fighter can compete in the WEC or the UFC anytime under his contract.

Why has the Top management at Zuffa come up with this and this way they can cross promote or if they want to have a superfight like GSP vs Condit, or Filho vs Franklin (silva will not fight Filho, friends, Or Brain Stann welcome any UFC fighter to challenge him for the title! or McCullough fight some of the UFC LW’s or the likes of Joe Daddy, T. Griffin go over and challenge Jaime Varner for the title. I think this would jsut blow up for both the UFC and WEC.

Thoughts?

I don’t know. I think he’s a good fighter, but I rate guys by can they compete with the champ. I’m not convinced he could compete with some of the more elite guys at ww?? He seems too small to me, look at him and look at GSP…enough said. My favorite thing about condit is the “mean mug” he walks into the ring with. He is a monster in the wec, and while wec guys claim it’s not the minor leagues, lets call it how it is, with the exception of the lighter weight classes, it’s the minor leagues!

gsp
hughes
sanchez
koscheck
davis
swick…maybe
alves…maybe
fitch
karo
serra
i can even see chris lytle possibly beating him

there would be other tough match ups with guys like hazelett, gono, chonon, foirivanti, hironaka, even anthony johnson might give him some trouble…

i’m not saying all those guys would beat him, but i’m saying they could be a tough match up…he’s good where he’s at right now

I agree with some of that SPIDA, guys like GSP and Penn(when he returns to Welter) would ruin this kid! Kos, Sancho, Fitch, Swick would be at the least interesting but thats about it. If he faught the guys on that list plus BJ he would prbably come out of it all with a 4-8 with those 4 being by rare and somewhat lucky subs . . . The only bad ass mofo in the WEC that should come over to the UFC is Faber plus 10 pounds!! Can you imagine fights like Faber/Guida, Faber/Griffin rematch . . . Me like!

Nate Diaz has been making it loud and clear that he wants to be first in line to show the world that Griffin is overrated.

I like the Diaz boys, just think how unstppable Nick would be if he put all the weed energy into fighting, and finishing instead of taking punishment and getting upset he got cut. As far as Nate, he’s probably the best non BJJ blackbelt I’ve seen

2008-04-28 16:07:44

Both Diaz brothers always take punishment in their fights. Its their style, they like to bang it out. I dont want to make any excuses for Nick, but I do believe the excessive scar tissue on his face worked against him lately. Now that he has had surgery, hopefully it wont be a problem any longer.

Nate’s ju jitsu is unbelievable for not having a black belt. The color of the belt really means nothing because certain camps are stingy with their black belts while others give them away like Candy on Halloween.

Take Wanderlei for example: He is 1 of my favorite fighters so dont take this as me hating, but he is said to be a black belt in Ju Jitsu. His ju jitz is no where near as god as Nates. Ceaser Gracie is stingy with the black belts, still it does not take anything away from the Diaz brothers skills.

Quick question: I know Nate is a brown belt, but is Nick a black belt?

The thing about the Diaz’s is you can be winning the first 99% of the fight, but they can always submit you in that last second of the fight - they are never out of it. That is, except for Nick and his scar tissue, that John pointed out. Hopefully his surgerry fixed that problem.

The Diaz’s along with Dan Henderson are my 3 favorite fighters. Then come Fitch and Leben.

With that said, I had bet a small amount of money on Pellegrino. Mainly, so if Nate lost, at least I’d win some money. In the end, I was happier to see Nate win.

Leave him there for a while. Why ruin a good thing that they have going on in the WEC. He’s a great prize for them. He’s very good in the WEC and he’s a very likable fighter. If Zuffa is building that org up then they shouldn’t even consider moving their top fighters. And from what Dana has said in the past this won’t happen anytime soon.

Five fights in the WEC is good enough to give Carlos some extra experience before making his jump to the UFC. Because lets face it, there is no competition in the WW division in the WEC. At this point I do believe that Carlos can hang with and even beat many of those WW on spidas list. These extra fights in the WEC will just build his confidence and make him a better fighter.

Five more fights in the WEC will just build Carlos’ confidence and experience before he makes his jump to the UFC where the real WW competition is. Carlos’ addition to the UFC’s WW division will just make that division tougher than it already is. I can’t wait to see him fight some of those guys on Spidas list so he can really test himself.
