But stuff like this always happens. It’s never the truly talented people on covers of magazines. It’s always the more marketable ones. And this applies to any magazine really.

Publishers want to show what people (not hardcore MMA fans) want to see.

Depending on how you’re defining “hyped up fighter,” I disagree. I agree that he is being marketed as the next big thing but I don’t think he’s being marketed as an elite level fighter.

The truth is you can always find better fighters (or people in general) to grace the covers of magazines. Why should Roger Huerta have been on the cover of SI? Doesn’t GSP deserve it more? Anderson Silva? With your logic, only the top pound for pound fighter deserves to be on the cover. Or what… the top 10? The decision is purely arbitrary.

I bet this twisted Dana’s panties up all in a bunch! Shaw must be laughing his @ss off. All the work Zuffa has done to make this sport mainstream and Kimbo gets the cover. Don’t get me wrong, congrats to Kimbo. But now more than ever, MMA needs someone on the cover who isn’t a newbie to pro competition and that will portray the image of the sport well with no strings to the “human cockfighting” of the past (and that’s how Kimbo gained his popularity). As sports journalists, hopefully Espn realizes this and doesn’t have the whole story on just Kimbo and his Youtube videos.

I like Kimbo, but there are are a lot of other fighters that should be on that cover.. He isn’t exactly the best choice to represent the sport (Anderson Silva, GSP?).

man this makes me sick to my stomach.

there are fighters out there who have really paid their dues, been in the grinder for years and years, and this guy comes along, beats up some bums on the street and instantly hes more successful and more popular then they are. takin nothin away from kimbo hes a good guy, but i just hate marketing and all the hype surrounding him. he should be treated like any other mma fighter, im sure thats what he wants too, kimbos a real fighter, he dont do it for the fame he does it coz he wants to bang.

Whaaaaaaaaaaat? I can’t watch the video, because I’m at work, but WTF?!

Seriously, this is a joke. ESPN is going to put a guy with a 1-0 “MMA” record on the cover of their magazine??

Yea, yea.. Anderson Silva dominating his division and requesting a fight with Roy Jones Jr. definitely isn’t more deserving of a cover story……..

Give me a break.

Yet, it ISN’T Kimbo’s fault.Remember that.

Exactly. What is Kimbo supposed to say, “Uh, no thanks, I don’t want to be on the cover of ESPN” lol

I agree. Its unfortunate that he is “the face” of mma being on the cover of mags and main event on the first live broadcast of an mma event.

Marketing dream.

Lets all pray james thompson can pull of a MIRACLE and stop this hype train right now!!!!

No matter what kimbo’s going down soon as he fights any top 10 heavyweight… problem is that might be a couple years the way the elite xc is!!

Kimbo really polarizes people. As many fans as he has, there are just as much ppl wanting to see him lose.

I’m not one that hopes someone will lose unless they are a dick. Kimbo’s not a dick, he’s a cool guy who loves to fight and make money for his fam. I have fighters that I cheer for (GSP, BJ, Vera, etc.), but otherwise I just want to see a good match. And I’m pretty sure I’ll get a good match when Kimbo steps into the cage, win or lose.

Here we go..I like the guy. Not a fan, but like him. He’s a very likable person. He doesn’t disrespect or talk shit about anyone, he actually comes out and says he’s not the best. He’s said openly that he’s at the front end of his career. He’s new to the sport and getting hype because he was on youtube. I don’t agree with how much attention he gets, but why wouldn’t he and elite take advantage of that. And for all you guys going to say he does talk shit, ask yourself who provoked it? He has had nothing but respect for the sport until someone disses him. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see just one time Dana cross promote and have someone destroy this guy, but until that happens, Gary Shaw will be milking him and be catching up to the main stream popularity of tha UFC!

I think Kimbo is marketable, but I think he’s being marketed the wrong way. He shouldn’t be marketed as a street thug. He’s not a gang-banger or a criminal. This guy has a great story, kinda like a real-life Rocky. He was nothing before he turned pro, and now he’s living it up. This is the American dream. Oh wait, I’ve got the perfect title for a TV-movie…

he is the perfect guy for gary shaw to build a company off

it doesnt matter that they dont have the best fighters in the world
if they put on great fights new faans whod never watched ufc or not watched it much will believe what gary shaw tells them

they have a stable of reasonable fighters who always come tofight

no jackasses like kalib starnes or travis gassed after 2 minutes lutter or charles crybaby mccarthy who quits mma after 1 bisping beatdown

First if you don’t like what espn does go buy them out, or start your own magazine then you can do what you want. It would not matter who it is, if it’s not your favorite fighter they are wrong.

All I have to say is… Gary Shaw don’t f*** around. Good stuff, being on the cover of ESPN sure is good for MMA, it’s just not good for UFC lol. Don’t hate the man, hate the game. This is business, Kimbo is there to make money and he’s not going to lose an opportunity such as this. Gary Shaw sure seems like he did good by going to CBS, I’m sure this had a lot to do with it. Dana missed his opportunity by not going with the mainstream TV when he could, if he did who knows, you might have someone else on the cover such as Rampage or A. Silva.

Whether you are a fan of Kimbo or EliteXC or not, you must admit that it is kind of odd to glorify someone who has no MMA record to speak of. IMHO this sets the sport backwards. This shows me that ESPN does not understand the sport. BTW, I thought that Dana recently said that he would soon announce a major network deal?

im goin to that fight! and just cuz he gets the espn cover, remember- thats on espn…not him. dont hate him for it, whats he supposed to say..”actually, espn, i havent established my mma pedigree to the level of fruition that would justify me gracing the cover of one of the most widely circulated magazines on the planet”
its not his fault hes overhyped

Unfortunately, nobody gives two shits about who is the best. The masses are interested in people like Kimbo, so that’s who we’ll see on the front pages. It’s been the same in the music industry for a long time now. The best musicians are known and respected in the inner circles and the trash is what ends up going triple platinum and on TRL. That’s what “going mainstream” is all about. Get used to it.

Wasn’t there a big fuss when Lebron James was getting a bunch of attention before he proved himself? I’m not saying this attention isn’t premature, but it ia what it is. Happens in other sports as well.

There’s only one person who has the ability to BURY Kimbo and it is DAna White, all Dana has to do is issue a Challenge to that no good piece of sh*t Kimbo to fight Nogueira or Mir, and HUMILIATE HIM, expose his sack of sh*t so called talent!!! Dana could bury Elite XC along the way too, we all saw Kimbo’s youtube video talking sh*t, with his “I’ll come to your camp” and “Holla at ya boy” Bullsh*t!!! Dana put an end to this fukcing as*hole already!!!

Gotta love Kimbo. Especially even more with all the hilarious haters. I hope Bas is right when he says Kimbo will be able to take top 10 guys within 4 or 5 fights. If he beats any top guys it’s going to be awesome watching all the hater’s heads pop.

i hope that Kimbo stays as hungry as he started off, being that they’re taking him out of his element and giving him a taste of all the finer things. fighters have been known to get caught up , lose focus and not take the next guy as serious as they should.
