ufc 83 recap
Somewhere in Montreal Dana White is wiping his brow.

Last night Georges St. Pierre righted the welterweight ship, dominating Matt Serra and reclaiming his undisputed 170-pund title in front of a hometown crowd.

As predicted, a vengeful GSP did what he was supposed to do in their first encounter and destroyed Matt Serra via TKO. “The Terror” never had a chance to get anything going after the bell sounded and while he may be remembered as merely a footnote on the career of GSP, that potential match against Matt Hughes is still out there.

When I interviewed Georges St. Pierre in February of 2007, he told me that he would “definitely” move up in weight to challenge the middleweight champion. Assuming he can get past Jon Fitch and perhaps a rematch with BJ Penn, does a superfight against Anderson Silva exist somewhere down the road?

Travis Lutter went out there yesterday against Rich Franklin and did what he does best: Squander his own opportunities. Lutter was controlling round one and could have potentially done the same in rounds two and three — had he been capable of actually breathing on his own.

Lutter, like so many before him, showed the world of MMA just how important it is to be in peak physical condition. After all, the better your conditioning, the easier it is to run from your opponent ala Kalib Starnes.

There were questions surrounding Starnes desire and heart going into UFC 83 and last night’s peformance did nothing to help his cause. Nor did the obscenities and crowd bashing. Nate Quarry looked good physically - maybe a little too good. Or maybe there was nothing else to focus on since Starnes refused to engage.

And speaking of engaging, Michael Bisping looked like a completely different fighter against Charles McCarthy. “The Count” showed very clean stand-up and battered McCarthy after some early danger. It’s way too early for the likes of Rich Franklin, but someone in the UFC should push for Bisping to start battling some bigger names.

Mac Danzig is trying to prove he’s no flash in the pan, and though a little tepid in round one, Danzig finally turned up the heat and softened up Mark Bocek before choking him out. Mac is loaded with talent but unfortunately so is the rest of the lightweight division.

Things are getting even more interesting in the chase for 155-lb gold.

Kenny Florian did a decent job filling in for Joe Rogan but despite the negative press Rogan sometimes gets I can admit to missing his act last night.

UFC 83: “Serra vs. St. Pierre 2″ was a good card but not filled with many surprises. However, there is little time to reflect on the feud since UFC 84 is right around the corner and we have another he/said he/said argument about who is the better fighter.

Below is a list of bonus recipients from UFC 83:

  • Demian Maia picked up the submission of the night ($75,000)
  • Goulet and Hironaka won fight of the night ($75,000)
  • MacDonald earned the KO of the night ($75,000)

Maia’s jiu jitsu is arguably top 5 in the WORLD, let alone the UFC. Compile a list of the top jiu-jitsu/grappling tournament practitioners @ 185 (or heavier), and Maia has likely defeated them in competition. Napao Gonzaga, Ronaldo “Jacare”, Flavio Almeida, Yushin Okami, and Gustavo Machado (to name just a few) have all lost to Maia in BJJ, and he has quite a resume:
* 2007 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Champion
* 2007 Super Challenge under-83kgs Champion
* 2006 Pan American Champion
* 2005 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Runner-Up
* Three-time World Cup champion
* Two-time World Champion
* Brazilian champion
* 7x state champion
* 4x Brazilian team champion

Can he be defeated? Of course, but I think it will take another world class athlete to do it. I predict that Maia will remain undefeated until he faces the likes of Ace Franklin, Nate Marquardt, or The Spider himself.

i often wondered why kalib starnes has been on ppv fight cards, this is not the first time he has ran a marathon! Overall fights were better then i thought they would be. Cant wait for the next one!!! Thanks ufc for the free ppv fights on AFN overseas, one of the few things that keeps me going over here!

i love it! serra got dominated and will likely fight hughes, and st-pierre proves that serra isn’t even on the same level as him. who ever thinks st-pierre isn’t the best in the welterweight division is kidding themselves, he was two steps ahead of serra that whole fight. franklin’s standup was impressive, he and henderson need to fight. i think starnes should be done in the ufc, you can’t run away the whole fight and expect to be around for long…

GSP is the most gifted athlete there is in the UFC, you can’t ever count a person like that out even if he was fighting Giant Silva. He has no weaknesses. Silva is easy to defeat, just no one has done it yet cause all his opponents want to stand and trade with him.

Dude, I think even I have a chance of beating that freak giant silva LOL. as for anderson being easy, I’m sorry c-war, I know we usually differ in opinions but I at least looked at you as someone who understood the game, well, guess I was wrong. I have no doubt in my mind that silva would beat gsp, hands down, but I’d never say gsp is easy to beat. we have to respect the athletes that deserves respect, and that goes for both gsp and the spider.

Comment by ragnarr

Yeah his wrestling would dominate Silva just like Henderson’s wrestling was “supposed” to dominate Silva, and Marquart’s ground game was “supposed” to dominate Silva, and Lutter was supposed to submit Silva.

Sorry to say, but I would not bet on GSP dominating Silva either. I hope it happens though, it would be a great fight.

Actually, Hendo was dominating for pretty much the whole first round. Clearly everyone knows Silva’a weakness is wrestling, though it may not be a very big weakness, it’s a weakness none the less. I think Silva would be too big for GSP to be honest, but if they were at some catch weight it would be a really interesting fight. They both have very nice stand-up styles, though yeah Silva is bigger and probably more crisp. On the ground, it would be a damn good wrestler against a damn good BJJ black belt. I think that fight would be amazing if GSP could bulk up enough.

Comment by ragnarr

Hendo won the first round, but never had Silva in any real danger. The only thing he could do was cover his mouth. Big deal, I still don’t call that domination.

1. Kalib Starnes just earned his way out of the UFC. I see 0 chance Dana and Joe ever put him on a main card at any event. And, if he loses his next fight, regardless of who it is, he’s out all together. Quarry pulled the Screech fighting method down the last 10 seconds of the fight, and Starnes still ran away from him. That’s just sad. Peace out Kalib.

2. I’m glad as can be GSP won. I figured it would be a little closer than it was, but, I’m cool with the outcome. Now, GSP can dominate the welterweight division for a little while, maybe fight Penn again, then move up and have one of the greatest matchups the UFC can offer in GSP vs Silva. And, Silva might win that, but now way is it a hands down “kill” against GSP.

3. Rich Franklin is one of the best guys in the UFC. Awesome guy. Great fighter. Glad to see him win. Travis Lutter on the other hand, is terrible, and should be relegated to lesser names. He had Franklin mounted twice and got nothing. Had what looked to me as a fight ending armbar, and how Franklin spun out of it without tearing everything in his shoulder is beyond me. That was pretty awesome, and just shows how good Ace really is.

4. Bisping is legit. Love him or hate him, he’s good.

And 5. I need to be brought on staff so I can cover MMA for a living. I’m even willing to travel to Las Vegas or wherever for all the UFC shows.

I agree about Starnes. That guy should start (or continue) training for a 10K or something. How he can come out and beat Leben then turn around and turn in a perfomance like that is beyond me. Franklin proved once again that he is the unquestioned second best MW in the UFC. It sucks he’s not going to get his title back until Silva gets bored with it because he’s one of my favorites.

That was a great card last night although none of the fights were split decisions.

Very impressed with Bisping last night! He looks 100% focused on being the best now. I didn’t buy what he said about being a natural 185 and not having to cut weight. A year and half ago his camp talked about him dropping down but then he said he couldn’t do it. Losses to Hammil and Rashad Evans probably convinced him to give up the beer.

I’m glad to see a scary Nate Quarry back. He can really hit! Not sure what was up with Starnes but his UFC career should be deep six’d now. That was a disgusting display of cowardice. The one judge who scored it 30-24 deinitely thought so.

Lastly I thought KenFlo (ughhh!) did a great job filing in! He was Rogan minus the stand-up ability (as in comedy this time). He’s got a place in the broadcast booth after he hangs up the gloves in my opinion.

Comment by goatboy

Hell that was a 30-24 by default, if you don’t do ANYTHING, you don’t even deserve a 9… hell if the ref would of deducted points by not intelligently defending himself by turning and running it could very easily have been 30-21.

Comment by DirtbagHtr

Just on the basis of “not intelligently defending yourself”, the ref could have stopped it while both were standing up.

I think Dana White needs to do himself a favor and never let Kalib Starnes get a fight on PPV again. Let him finish his contract out on prelims and then let him sign with some third rate MMA promotion doing county fairs and carnivals for Mormon missionaries. He was a joke on the Ultimate Fighter and other then a few glimmers of hope on his record, his career can be remembered for his incesent whinning and now the UFC Marathon.

Travis Lutter is another joke. I have never had a problem making weight, give me the champ-I am the one guy that is asking for a title shot because nobody else is lining up and asking for the opportunity-The one thing he forgot to mention is that he has to win in the first 2 minutes or else he is going to run out of gas like a Hummer(H1), with a ten gallon gas tank, riding down Route 666. How can you call yourself a profesional anything and not be able to engage for 5 minutes. I have seen old men with emphysema that have more stamina then Lutter displayed last night. We kind of accepted him gassing the last time since he was cutting weight at the last minute, even though he months to prepare for 185#, but mistakes ad miscalcutalions happen so whatever. But there was no excuse this time. He had at least 4 months to train for this fight. He looked like a fish out of water sitting in his corner between rounds.

I like GSP-He is an amazing fighter in my top 5 favorites. But I do not think he is on the level of Anderson Silva. I also do not think he would get by a BJ Penn rematch. He is young and most definetly will be the future of the sport, but I do not think he gon the level of BJ or Silva just yet-keyword, Just YET! He will be and is tettering right now but just not yet…

***Welcome MMAManiiacs to My Sunday Morning Rant!***

Just like I suspected it was a crappy Card, filled with mismatches. Most of last nights aired fights were not close to being competitive and some of the opponents from last night should never fight in the UFC again.

My analysis:

Main Event: For months I have been saying that GSP would dominate this fight. I knew what the outcome would be, I just wasnt sure what kind of a fight that it would be. To Everyone’s surprise GSP chose not o trade with Serra. That shows the respect GSP has for his heavyhands. I say it all the time: When one of the greats in our sport has that fire in his eyes, it doesnt matter what the opponent will do. Like I said, GSP would show just how mentally tough he really is. I would like to show my appreciation to the class that Serra and GSP displayed last night. They did an amazing job at hyping up this mis match and when the fight was over the embraced and showed nothing but Class! GSP vs. Serra III in Madison Square Garden? WOW!!!

Franklin vs. Lutter: All you upset thirsty fans who picked lutter look silly this morning. 1st of all, shame on the UFC’s marketing team for leading so many fans into actually believing that Lutter is a worthy competitor because he is far from that. He is a joke who doesnt belong at the top of the division. This guy has some of the worst cardio I have ever seen, and he can take a punch about as well as Paul Georgieff.

Lutter clowned himself by looking past Franklin and calling out Silva. People talk about Lutter like he is a GOD on the ground, but I dont see anything special. His Ju Jitsu is very good, but in no way is it any better than other middleweights like: Almeida, Maia, Thales Leites. Lutter is not a top 10 fighter in th4e UFC. the guy can not fight for more than 1 round with out gassing.

Once again Rich proved that he is still very hard to beat by anyone not named Anderson Silva. In Rich’s pre fight interviews, he was not willing to look past Lutter and speculate on Future opponents because he didnt like to look past opponents. On the other hand, all Lutter did was run his mouth about Anderson Silva, and now that fight wont ever happen….Lutter is a JOKE! I hope to never see him on a main card again. he is not the only middleweight with great ju jitsu. The other great ground wizards bring some solid striking and conditioning to the table so Lutter is pretty worthless to the division IMO. Let Lutter fight McDonald…2 pussies should square off!

As for Bisping, he looked great at middlewight. Not so much the fight because we cant really evaluate him since he was fighting the weakest middleweight in the world…McCarthy looked like a complete joke. People wonder why we all call him “Tuppaware”!

Tuppaware looked like Tito Ortiz (covering up in a ball the whole fight while Bisping Teed OFF! That fight was just like Liddell vs. Tito part 2. Leave it to a McCaqrthy to make Bisping look like Chuck Liddell. I will officially boycott any future UFC event that McCarthy will be participating in…This guy is a complete Joke and he should never again have the honor of competing inb the UFC Octagon!

Mac looked OK! I was impressed with his win, but I dont think he looked all that great last night. IMO he looked pretty slow and not very fluent. I dont know maybe I am being a litle to critical of him, but he will have to be better if he wants to compete against better lightweights. Overall submitting Bocek was impressive.

Kailb, like lutter and McCarthy should all be cut from the UFC. I am no fan of Quarry, but I have to admit that was the best I have seen him look in a long time. For once, he did nopt look Robotic, he looked fluid, he let the hands and those Nasty leg Kicks fly, while Kalib ran around and then talked crap! What a joke of a fight.

Overall I did well last night. The only fight I bet on that I lost was the Doerkson fight. I had El Dirte in that fight and the athlete beat him. I went 5-1 last night, but did not win all that much money because most of the fighters I bet on where Heavy Favorites so I didnt win too much on each bet. However I am happy to pocket another $325 from last nights action!!!

Props to Kenny Florian, who did a great job filling in for Rogan who’s presence was missed!

happy to get this mediocre event out of the way and now we can start counting down to a real event: UFC 84!!!!!
Cant wait for that 1!

Well put john, couldn’t agree more. When I watch any MMA event with my buddies, I’m the only one who seems to know what he’s remotely talking about, they’re all mainstream fans I guess you could say. They all fell for the hype around several of the fighers untill I had to tell them just how one-sidded almost every fight was on the card. Again, well put.

Also, to all you people who were sooooo sure of your boy Serra….HA! GSP ROCKS!!!

I didn’t bet much either because of the disparity in the odds, but won on Franklin and McDonald. I did, however, impress all my rugby-playing buddies who bet on all the underdogs and hope for upsets when I called Mac’s gogoplata before Florian announced it. They were like, “hey, that guy on TV said the same thing. PW knows his stuff.” And I was all, “damn straight. Recognize, bitches.”

Agreed with everything except Lutter. He has all the potential in the world but is only dangerous in no more than a minute!!!! His cardio sucks donkey balls. He doesn’t even give Alberto Crane a run for his money in that department. Worst in the UFC by far. However, If he could build some stamina, I could see him being at the top of the weight class. He pretty much dominated Franklin before he started huffin for air.

On another note, is Kalib Starnes trying to end his contract in the UFC? They pay him to fight, we pay to see him fight, and then he doesn’t fight? 30-24! I loved it when they called that out. Quarry basically gave Starnes free-will to do what he wanted to him with ten seconds left, and he still ran, WTF!!!!! He just earned himself a first class ticket out of the UFC. So happy, 30-24 put him in his place. I think another one was 30-26 but I don’t recall the last score card. I also enjoyed how the crowd went from boos to cheers in a heartbeat like 3 different times as the jumbo-tron switched from Starnes to Quarry. I think the camera man did that on purpose, it was awesome though. Glad to see Quarry looking like a contender, he looked great.

The rest of the matches went as expected except I thought Herman might pull out a victory. I didn’t get to watch that fight, but Maia seems like a number one contender soon.

PPV was pretty good overall. Starnes should never enter the Octagon again, One would think that they would want to perfom well in front of their own countrys fans. Quarry, looked good and entered the crowd as well. Hopefully GSP vs. Serra 3 will be announce soon. If not, then GSP vs. Fitch should fight on a card that includes Serra vs. Hughes. I find it unfortunate that Lutter, who talked up a storm coming into the fight, choose to not be conditioned properly, as he gassed after one round. I think that the middleweight division is a little better than everyone thinks. Its just that Silva is so far up and Franklin is below him, then after them there is a group like Almeida, Okami, Quarry, Cote, Marquardt, Leben and others that have to battle it out and see who is the number one contender(tournament would be great). Can’t wait for the Ill Will PPV next month

Bisping, you know, I was mad at him for awhile, but I’m over it, besides he looked sharp. (even though it was against capt. miserable) Better compititon for him please! I still think he lost to Hamill, but it’s in the past now and I think he’ll do great at 185

And of course, everybody give it up for GSP. Matt Serra will always be a hero of mine, but the future truly became the present today.

Wish I could see the Damian Maia fight!

Can’t wait till May 24th!

Oh and when they made the official decision for Quarry and Starnes, It was just Hilarious. When the camer showed Nate : Cheesy smile and a ton of cheers! When they showed Kalib : Boos from his home country. (ouch, that’s gotta hurt) Camera back to Nate : Cheesy smile and more cheers! Hilarious.

And did you catch Starnes talking smack and saying F-U to one of Quarry’s cornermen? What a joke, go home Starnes, oh wait they don’t like you there either!

Worst event in a very long time. 6 fights. 4 were shitty. With all the talent, there’s no reason to keep watching the Starnes, McCarthy, and Lutters of the mma world. Even Matt Serra disappointed me with almost zero offense. Looks like the undercard must have been good. But Zuffa would miss out on the on demand revenue by broadcasting so no need to show all the fights, especially when alien vs predator needs to be hyped. What a joke of an organization.

…That was hands down the worst performance in the history of the UFC… most of these guys, even when they’re scared… will go out and give it their all… 99 percent of the guys in the UFC are there for a reason… Starnes has no buisness being in the cage. He looks like a leprechaun.

Maia - $ WON BIG - Herman is tough but I knew he couldn’t stay off the mat with Maia.

Danzig - $ WON SMALL - knees to the dome! splat right on his facial! gyea! John called the mount RNC transition.

Bisping - more knees!! gyea!! 1st round massacre!! looking way above average!! lol… GET UP!!

Florian - you would think a bjj black belt would have more insight on the ground game. Rogan explains it so even blind people can enjoy the fight.

starnes - i hope he made $ throwing the fight because his career just ended.

lutter - FOOT HUGGING!! LOL!

Serra - $ LOST SMALL - so I guess GSP is afraid to get KTFO.

Thank yo for my props on the Danzig fight.

Lutter looked like “the entertainer” sucking on “New Yorks” toes on “I love New York”.. If soccer kicks were allowed, lutter would have gotten his face kicked in!

I think this is the first thread I have read through, and everyone is basically in agreement! Except on the GSP/Silva issue witch I think the only way to know would be to see it happen. Apparently GSP’s head problems went away with the brick, and Silva has shown little weakness. I would love to see them fight. I’m not counting out Fitch, but if GSP gets through him, and BJ, the only thing that makes any sense at all is Silva. I don’t know about anyone else, but I enjoy a fight allot more when I don’t have a 95% assurance of who is going to win it.

I have never been a fan of Starnes, in fact there has always been something about him that’s bugged the crap out of me. But he not only didn’t fight, he even looked different. I don’t want to try and make any excuses for him, but there just had to have been something else going on. At this point I’m theorizing that he broke his hand one or two days before the fight (because I don’t think he landed a single shot) and decided to show up anyway just so he would get paid. I’ve never seen a fighter so completely unwilling to fight. It was really disgraceful.

that stoppage was bullsh*t.stoppage from knees to the body,you gotta be fn kidding me.GSP lands 3 knees to the body in the last 9 seconds and fourth totaly missing and the ref stops the fight BS. basicaly this is how it boils down,GSP more marketable as champ,fighting in home town,early stopage equals Serra getting robbed.that shit was RIGGED and the ref should be shot.

Awwww, someone’s upset. lol If Serra was just going to wait it out, then the stoppage was good. If he was going to just curl up and take 10 more seconds of knees like those to the ribs, he wouldn’t have been able to move in the next round and probablywould have gotten beat down even worse. Those knees didn’t tickle Serra, GSP was on his feet throwing those knees, I’m going to guess pretty close to full out, Serra just didn’t want to tap.

No im not upset at all.i just find it funny how all you nuttsucking GSP fans thinks his shit dont stink.here’s a question, what was more impressive Serra’s embarassing beat down of GSP or GSP’s knee to the body bs stoppage.what’a great champ.it’s cool though he will just lose it his first defense and then say he didnt prepare or had personally problems blah blah blah.and Serra didnt tap to strikes cuz he didnt go out the a bitch ala Serra vs GSP 1.

That’s because Hughes is going to wreck him next, which is a shame, because I like Serra more than Hughes by a long shot.

I wouldn’t be suprised at all if Serra’s ribs are broken. Just face it he got his ass kicked last night. Here come the conspiracy theories from all the newbies and people who can’t deal with their faves getting beat. I didn’t see Serra complaining about the stoppage! He looked happy that it was over.
