ufc 83 recap
Somewhere in Montreal Dana White is wiping his brow.

Last night Georges St. Pierre righted the welterweight ship, dominating Matt Serra and reclaiming his undisputed 170-pund title in front of a hometown crowd.

As predicted, a vengeful GSP did what he was supposed to do in their first encounter and destroyed Matt Serra via TKO. “The Terror” never had a chance to get anything going after the bell sounded and while he may be remembered as merely a footnote on the career of GSP, that potential match against Matt Hughes is still out there.

When I interviewed Georges St. Pierre in February of 2007, he told me that he would “definitely” move up in weight to challenge the middleweight champion. Assuming he can get past Jon Fitch and perhaps a rematch with BJ Penn, does a superfight against Anderson Silva exist somewhere down the road?

Travis Lutter went out there yesterday against Rich Franklin and did what he does best: Squander his own opportunities. Lutter was controlling round one and could have potentially done the same in rounds two and three — had he been capable of actually breathing on his own.

Lutter, like so many before him, showed the world of MMA just how important it is to be in peak physical condition. After all, the better your conditioning, the easier it is to run from your opponent ala Kalib Starnes.

There were questions surrounding Starnes desire and heart going into UFC 83 and last night’s peformance did nothing to help his cause. Nor did the obscenities and crowd bashing. Nate Quarry looked good physically – maybe a little too good. Or maybe there was nothing else to focus on since Starnes refused to engage.

And speaking of engaging, Michael Bisping looked like a completely different fighter against Charles McCarthy. “The Count” showed very clean stand-up and battered McCarthy after some early danger. It’s way too early for the likes of Rich Franklin, but someone in the UFC should push for Bisping to start battling some bigger names.

Mac Danzig is trying to prove he’s no flash in the pan, and though a little tepid in round one, Danzig finally turned up the heat and softened up Mark Bocek before choking him out. Mac is loaded with talent but unfortunately so is the rest of the lightweight division.

Things are getting even more interesting in the chase for 155-lb gold.

Kenny Florian did a decent job filling in for Joe Rogan but despite the negative press Rogan sometimes gets I can admit to missing his act last night.

UFC 83: “Serra vs. St. Pierre 2″ was a good card but not filled with many surprises. However, there is little time to reflect on the feud since UFC 84 is right around the corner and we have another he/said he/said argument about who is the better fighter.

Below is a list of bonus recipients from UFC 83:

  • Demian Maia picked up the submission of the night ($75,000)
  • Goulet and Hironaka won fight of the night ($75,000)
  • MacDonald earned the KO of the night ($75,000)

Maia’s jiu jitsu is arguably top 5 in the WORLD, let alone the UFC. Compile a list of the top jiu-jitsu/grappling tournament practitioners @ 185 (or heavier), and Maia has likely defeated them in competition. Napao Gonzaga, Ronaldo “Jacare”, Flavio Almeida, Yushin Okami, and Gustavo Machado (to name just a few) have all lost to Maia in BJJ, and he has quite a resume:
* 2007 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Champion
* 2007 Super Challenge under-83kgs Champion
* 2006 Pan American Champion
* 2005 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Runner-Up
* Three-time World Cup champion
* Two-time World Champion
* Brazilian champion
* 7x state champion
* 4x Brazilian team champion

Can he be defeated? Of course, but I think it will take another world class athlete to do it. I predict that Maia will remain undefeated until he faces the likes of Ace Franklin, Nate Marquardt, or The Spider himself.

i often wondered why kalib starnes has been on ppv fight cards, this is not the first time he has ran a marathon! Overall fights were better then i thought they would be. Cant wait for the next one!!! Thanks ufc for the free ppv fights on AFN overseas, one of the few things that keeps me going over here!

i love it! serra got dominated and will likely fight hughes, and st-pierre proves that serra isn’t even on the same level as him. who ever thinks st-pierre isn’t the best in the welterweight division is kidding themselves, he was two steps ahead of serra that whole fight. franklin’s standup was impressive, he and henderson need to fight. i think starnes should be done in the ufc, you can’t run away the whole fight and expect to be around for long…

GSP is the most gifted athlete there is in the UFC, you can’t ever count a person like that out even if he was fighting Giant Silva. He has no weaknesses. Silva is easy to defeat, just no one has done it yet cause all his opponents want to stand and trade with him.

Dude, I think even I have a chance of beating that freak giant silva LOL. as for anderson being easy, I’m sorry c-war, I know we usually differ in opinions but I at least looked at you as someone who understood the game, well, guess I was wrong. I have no doubt in my mind that silva would beat gsp, hands down, but I’d never say gsp is easy to beat. we have to respect the athletes that deserves respect, and that goes for both gsp and the spider.

Comment by ragnarr

Yeah his wrestling would dominate Silva just like Henderson’s wrestling was “supposed” to dominate Silva, and Marquart’s ground game was “supposed” to dominate Silva, and Lutter was supposed to submit Silva.

Sorry to say, but I would not bet on GSP dominating Silva either. I hope it happens though, it would be a great fight.

Actually, Hendo was dominating for pretty much the whole first round. Clearly everyone knows Silva’a weakness is wrestling, though it may not be a very big weakness, it’s a weakness none the less. I think Silva would be too big for GSP to be honest, but if they were at some catch weight it would be a really interesting fight. They both have very nice stand-up styles, though yeah Silva is bigger and probably more crisp. On the ground, it would be a damn good wrestler against a damn good BJJ black belt. I think that fight would be amazing if GSP could bulk up enough.

Comment by ragnarr

Hendo won the first round, but never had Silva in any real danger. The only thing he could do was cover his mouth. Big deal, I still don’t call that domination.

1. Kalib Starnes just earned his way out of the UFC. I see 0 chance Dana and Joe ever put him on a main card at any event. And, if he loses his next fight, regardless of who it is, he’s out all together. Quarry pulled the Screech fighting method down the last 10 seconds of the fight, and Starnes still ran away from him. That’s just sad. Peace out Kalib.

2. I’m glad as can be GSP won. I figured it would be a little closer than it was, but, I’m cool with the outcome. Now, GSP can dominate the welterweight division for a little while, maybe fight Penn again, then move up and have one of the greatest matchups the UFC can offer in GSP vs Silva. And, Silva might win that, but now way is it a hands down “kill” against GSP.

3. Rich Franklin is one of the best guys in the UFC. Awesome guy. Great fighter. Glad to see him win. Travis Lutter on the other hand, is terrible, and should be relegated to lesser names. He had Franklin mounted twice and got nothing. Had what looked to me as a fight ending armbar, and how Franklin spun out of it without tearing everything in his shoulder is beyond me. That was pretty awesome, and just shows how good Ace really is.

4. Bisping is legit. Love him or hate him, he’s good.

And 5. I need to be brought on staff so I can cover MMA for a living. I’m even willing to travel to Las Vegas or wherever for all the UFC shows.

I agree about Starnes. That guy should start (or continue) training for a 10K or something. How he can come out and beat Leben then turn around and turn in a perfomance like that is beyond me. Franklin proved once again that he is the unquestioned second best MW in the UFC. It sucks he’s not going to get his title back until Silva gets bored with it because he’s one of my favorites.

That was a great card last night although none of the fights were split decisions.

Very impressed with Bisping last night! He looks 100% focused on being the best now. I didn’t buy what he said about being a natural 185 and not having to cut weight. A year and half ago his camp talked about him dropping down but then he said he couldn’t do it. Losses to Hammil and Rashad Evans probably convinced him to give up the beer.

I’m glad to see a scary Nate Quarry back. He can really hit! Not sure what was up with Starnes but his UFC career should be deep six’d now. That was a disgusting display of cowardice. The one judge who scored it 30-24 deinitely thought so.

Lastly I thought KenFlo (ughhh!) did a great job filing in! He was Rogan minus the stand-up ability (as in comedy this time). He’s got a place in the broadcast booth after he hangs up the gloves in my opinion.

Hell that was a 30-24 by default, if you don’t do ANYTHING, you don’t even deserve a 9… hell if the ref would of deducted points by not intelligently defending himself by turning and running it could very easily have been 30-21.

Comment by DirtbagHtr

Just on the basis of “not intelligently defending yourself”, the ref could have stopped it while both were standing up.

I think Dana White needs to do himself a favor and never let Kalib Starnes get a fight on PPV again. Let him finish his contract out on prelims and then let him sign with some third rate MMA promotion doing county fairs and carnivals for Mormon missionaries. He was a joke on the Ultimate Fighter and other then a few glimmers of hope on his record, his career can be remembered for his incesent whinning and now the UFC Marathon.

Travis Lutter is another joke. I have never had a problem making weight, give me the champ-I am the one guy that is asking for a title shot because nobody else is lining up and asking for the opportunity-The one thing he forgot to mention is that he has to win in the first 2 minutes or else he is going to run out of gas like a Hummer(H1), with a ten gallon gas tank, riding down Route 666. How can you call yourself a profesional anything and not be able to engage for 5 minutes. I have seen old men with emphysema that have more stamina then Lutter displayed last night. We kind of accepted him gassing the last time since he was cutting weight at the last minute, even though he months to prepare for 185#, but mistakes ad miscalcutalions happen so whatever. But there was no excuse this time. He had at least 4 months to train for this fight. He looked like a fish out of water sitting in his corner between rounds.

I like GSP-He is an amazing fighter in my top 5 favorites. But I do not think he is on the level of Anderson Silva. I also do not think he would get by a BJ Penn rematch. He is young and most definetly will be the future of the sport, but I do not think he gon the level of BJ or Silva just yet-keyword, Just YET! He will be and is tettering right now but just not yet…

***Welcome MMAManiiacs to My Sunday Morning Rant!***

Just like I suspected it was a crappy Card, filled with mismatches. Most of last nights aired fights were not close to being competitive and some of the opponents from last night should never fight in the UFC again.

My analysis:

Main Event: For months I have been saying that GSP would dominate this fight. I knew what the outcome would be, I just wasnt sure what kind of a fight that it would be. To Everyone’s surprise GSP chose not o trade with Serra. That shows the respect GSP has for his heavyhands. I say it all the time: When one of the greats in our sport has that fire in his eyes, it doesnt matter what the opponent will do. Like I said, GSP would show just how mentally tough he really is. I would like to show my appreciation to the class that Serra and GSP displayed last night. They did an amazing job at hyping up this mis match and when the fight was over the embraced and showed nothing but Class! GSP vs. Serra III in Madison Square Garden? WOW!!!

Franklin vs. Lutter: All you upset thirsty fans who picked lutter look silly this morning. 1st of all, shame on the UFC’s marketing team for leading so many fans into actually believing that Lutter is a worthy competitor because he is far from that. He is a joke who doesnt belong at the top of the division. This guy has some of the worst cardio I have ever seen, and he can take a punch about as well as Paul Georgieff.

Lutter clowned himself by looking past Franklin and calling out Silva. People talk about Lutter like he is a GOD on the ground, but I dont see anything special. His Ju Jitsu is very good, but in no way is it any better than other middleweights like: Almeida, Maia, Thales Leites. Lutter is not a top 10 fighter in th4e UFC. the guy can not fight for more than 1 round with out gassing.

Once again Rich proved that he is still very hard to beat by anyone not named Anderson Silva. In Rich’s pre fight interviews, he was not willing to look past Lutter and speculate on Future opponents because he didnt like to look past opponents. On the other hand, all Lutter did was run his mouth about Anderson Silva, and now that fight wont ever happen….Lutter is a JOKE! I hope to never see him on a main card again. he is not the only middleweight with great ju jitsu. The other great ground wizards bring some solid striking and conditioning to the table so Lutter is pretty worthless to the division IMO. Let Lutter fight McDonald…2 pussies should square off!

As for Bisping, he looked great at middlewight. Not so much the fight because we cant really evaluate him since he was fighting the weakest middleweight in the world…McCarthy looked like a complete joke. People wonder why we all call him “Tuppaware”!

Tuppaware looked like Tito Ortiz (covering up in a ball the whole fight while Bisping Teed OFF! That fight was just like Liddell vs. Tito part 2. Leave it to a McCaqrthy to make Bisping look like Chuck Liddell. I will officially boycott any future UFC event that McCarthy will be participating in…This guy is a complete Joke and he should never again have the honor of competing inb the UFC Octagon!

Mac looked OK! I was impressed with his win, but I dont think he looked all that great last night. IMO he looked pretty slow and not very fluent. I dont know maybe I am being a litle to critical of him, but he will have to be better if he wants to compete against better lightweights. Overall submitting Bocek was impressive.

Kailb, like lutter and McCarthy should all be cut from the UFC. I am no fan of Quarry, but I have to admit that was the best I have seen him look in a long time. For once, he did nopt look Robotic, he looked fluid, he let the hands and those Nasty leg Kicks fly, while Kalib ran around and then talked crap! What a joke of a fight.

Overall I did well last night. The only fight I bet on that I lost was the Doerkson fight. I had El Dirte in that fight and the athlete beat him. I went 5-1 last night, but did not win all that much money because most of the fighters I bet on where Heavy Favorites so I didnt win too much on each bet. However I am happy to pocket another $325 from last nights action!!!

Props to Kenny Florian, who did a great job filling in for Rogan who’s presence was missed!

happy to get this mediocre event out of the way and now we can start counting down to a real event: UFC 84!!!!!
Cant wait for that 1!

Well put john, couldn’t agree more. When I watch any MMA event with my buddies, I’m the only one who seems to know what he’s remotely talking about, they’re all mainstream fans I guess you could say. They all fell for the hype around several of the fighers untill I had to tell them just how one-sidded almost every fight was on the card. Again, well put.

Also, to all you people who were sooooo sure of your boy Serra….HA! GSP ROCKS!!!

I didn’t bet much either because of the disparity in the odds, but won on Franklin and McDonald. I did, however, impress all my rugby-playing buddies who bet on all the underdogs and hope for upsets when I called Mac’s gogoplata before Florian announced it. They were like, “hey, that guy on TV said the same thing. PW knows his stuff.” And I was all, “damn straight. Recognize, bitches.”

Agreed with everything except Lutter. He has all the potential in the world but is only dangerous in no more than a minute!!!! His cardio sucks donkey balls. He doesn’t even give Alberto Crane a run for his money in that department. Worst in the UFC by far. However, If he could build some stamina, I could see him being at the top of the weight class. He pretty much dominated Franklin before he started huffin for air.

On another note, is Kalib Starnes trying to end his contract in the UFC? They pay him to fight, we pay to see him fight, and then he doesn’t fight? 30-24! I loved it when they called that out. Quarry basically gave Starnes free-will to do what he wanted to him with ten seconds left, and he still ran, WTF!!!!! He just earned himself a first class ticket out of the UFC. So happy, 30-24 put him in his place. I think another one was 30-26 but I don’t recall the last score card. I also enjoyed how the crowd went from boos to cheers in a heartbeat like 3 different times as the jumbo-tron switched from Starnes to Quarry. I think the camera man did that on purpose, it was awesome though. Glad to see Quarry looking like a contender, he looked great.

The rest of the matches went as expected except I thought Herman might pull out a victory. I didn’t get to watch that fight, but Maia seems like a number one contender soon.

PPV was pretty good overall. Starnes should never enter the Octagon again, One would think that they would want to perfom well in front of their own countrys fans. Quarry, looked good and entered the crowd as well. Hopefully GSP vs. Serra 3 will be announce soon. If not, then GSP vs. Fitch should fight on a card that includes Serra vs. Hughes. I find it unfortunate that Lutter, who talked up a storm coming into the fight, choose to not be conditioned properly, as he gassed after one round. I think that the middleweight division is a little better than everyone thinks. Its just that Silva is so far up and Franklin is below him, then after them there is a group like Almeida, Okami, Quarry, Cote, Marquardt, Leben and others that have to battle it out and see who is the number one contender(tournament would be great). Can’t wait for the Ill Will PPV next month

Bisping, you know, I was mad at him for awhile, but I’m over it, besides he looked sharp. (even though it was against capt. miserable) Better compititon for him please! I still think he lost to Hamill, but it’s in the past now and I think he’ll do great at 185

And of course, everybody give it up for GSP. Matt Serra will always be a hero of mine, but the future truly became the present today.

Wish I could see the Damian Maia fight!

Can’t wait till May 24th!

Oh and when they made the official decision for Quarry and Starnes, It was just Hilarious. When the camer showed Nate : Cheesy smile and a ton of cheers! When they showed Kalib : Boos from his home country. (ouch, that’s gotta hurt) Camera back to Nate : Cheesy smile and more cheers! Hilarious.

And did you catch Starnes talking smack and saying F-U to one of Quarry’s cornermen? What a joke, go home Starnes, oh wait they don’t like you there either!

Worst event in a very long time. 6 fights. 4 were shitty. With all the talent, there’s no reason to keep watching the Starnes, McCarthy, and Lutters of the mma world. Even Matt Serra disappointed me with almost zero offense. Looks like the undercard must have been good. But Zuffa would miss out on the on demand revenue by broadcasting so no need to show all the fights, especially when alien vs predator needs to be hyped. What a joke of an organization.

Maia – $ WON BIG – Herman is tough but I knew he couldn’t stay off the mat with Maia.

Danzig – $ WON SMALL – knees to the dome! splat right on his facial! gyea! John called the mount RNC transition.

Bisping – more knees!! gyea!! 1st round massacre!! looking way above average!! lol… GET UP!!

Florian – you would think a bjj black belt would have more insight on the ground game. Rogan explains it so even blind people can enjoy the fight.

starnes – i hope he made $ throwing the fight because his career just ended.

lutter – FOOT HUGGING!! LOL!

Serra – $ LOST SMALL – so I guess GSP is afraid to get KTFO.

I think this is the first thread I have read through, and everyone is basically in agreement! Except on the GSP/Silva issue witch I think the only way to know would be to see it happen. Apparently GSP’s head problems went away with the brick, and Silva has shown little weakness. I would love to see them fight. I’m not counting out Fitch, but if GSP gets through him, and BJ, the only thing that makes any sense at all is Silva. I don’t know about anyone else, but I enjoy a fight allot more when I don’t have a 95% assurance of who is going to win it.

I have never been a fan of Starnes, in fact there has always been something about him that’s bugged the crap out of me. But he not only didn’t fight, he even looked different. I don’t want to try and make any excuses for him, but there just had to have been something else going on. At this point I’m theorizing that he broke his hand one or two days before the fight (because I don’t think he landed a single shot) and decided to show up anyway just so he would get paid. I’ve never seen a fighter so completely unwilling to fight. It was really disgraceful.

Awwww, someone’s upset. lol If Serra was just going to wait it out, then the stoppage was good. If he was going to just curl up and take 10 more seconds of knees like those to the ribs, he wouldn’t have been able to move in the next round and probablywould have gotten beat down even worse. Those knees didn’t tickle Serra, GSP was on his feet throwing those knees, I’m going to guess pretty close to full out, Serra just didn’t want to tap.

Don’t expect much more game than that from Serra, especially going up against GSP. Serra isn’t even top 10 WW in my opinion. His KO was a fluke and a lot of people fell victim into the Serra hype. First off Ken-Flo did a great job out there even if his name is Ken-Flo. Kalib Starnes looked like he was being paid to throw the fight by simply not fighting. Nate Quarry has a cool tattoo and is back on the road to glory. Bisbing still bugs me, even after his ownage of Captin Miserable last night. Travis Lutter and Rich Franklin looked like a couple of retired Yamma Pit Fighters in an under card bout. Wow what a weak performance form both of them, Lutter especially. Yeah, and your going after Silva next? Please. Who would have ever thought that GSP would take this bout via knees to the body? All in all a good card IMO. I did find myself squealing with glee at the sight of Ed Hermanbeing tossed around like a rag doll at the end of the broadcast. A little humble pie might go a long way for howdy doody.

I was sad that Serra lost, I am still no matter what a Serra fan, and I can not wait till him and Hughes class. GSP is so strong on the ground, he has to be the strongest 170 fighter period. He man handled Koscheck, Hughes and Serra. He used his dominant strength to demolish those fighters.

I loved Nate Quarry’s running man hide the face punch as well. It was funny, but yet also made MMA look bad.

Charles McCarthy sucks. Point blank. I had money on him too.

I think a Nate Quarry vs. Michael Bisping needs to happen.

At least Quarry had a sense of humor about the whole thing, chasing him around the ring, then doing the hand-over-face punching (we call that Aggie fighting in Texas). Then when Starnes’ hometown fans cheered Quarry and booed Starnes, Quarry busted out the “if I can change, and you can change, then everybody can change.” Sheer brilliance.

Surprising that this didn’t jolt Starnes into the reality that he was making history for acting like such a complete joke, and go after Quarry. He has no shame I guess, still backing up while Quarry just made fun of such an absurd situation. Dana should have given him a bonus.

Starnes was weird. No one who does this for a living would act like that. It reminds me of a dream/nightmare I had where I showed up for work one day and forgot entirely how to do it. I wasn’t even dressed properly and ended up running around avoiding everyone. I feel like there must be an explanation.

I’m in awe of GSP’s ability to take anyone down at will. It’s bloody amazing. You watch other fights where people struggle to get take downs and people sprawl out of them, and GSP just takes them down so quick and easy. That’s the main reason I can see him taking on Anderson. Unless Anderson can sprawl out of his epic takedowns, you know that it would be a decent fight. If Silva keeps it on the feet though it’ll be a tough fight for GSP. I sort of thought that Serra would have been able to get a couple of shots in, but to his defense, he did just as well or better than the rest of the UFC against him (aside from Hughes and his first match). Some dude up there said that Serra was knocked out from the knees. I saw it too. Serra’s arms suddenly flopped from his head and his head sort of wobbled. He had no defense from those knees, and I don’t think that waiting out the round is relevant.

I sort of cringe at all the talk about the belt being with it’s rightful owner though. It was WITH it’s rightful owner before! Serra brutalized GSP the first time. GSP even owned up to it and admitted that Serra is the true belt holder after his win over Hughes. Give Serra credit. The belt was rightfully his.

I think Lutter still has potential, but he needs to get in shape. He has the skill, which is the hard part. Getting in shape is easy, anyone can do it! Just run and ride your bike everyday. Go swimming a couple times a week for an hour! Anyone can do that. He just isn’t focused I guess.

Bisping looked good, but we’ll see how good when he faces up to Rich. I’d like to see he and Quarry, or Bisping/Leben.

Who’s the dingleberry that claims GSP doesn’t have the skill to take on BJ??? GSP already beat BJ once! A rematch would be great and makes sense, but GSP is certainly up to BJ’s level. I’d say it’s one of the great matchups for 2 reasons:

1) BJ is so awesome on his back (while GSP’s specialty is getting you on your back).

2) Both fighters are insanely improved and stronger than when they first fought. GSP is so improved it isn’t even funny. BJ would train really hard to beat the best. I can’t wait to see it. GSP would be eager to win convincingly, (the first was a win, but it wasn’t convincing and his face was battered).

Early in that thread I posted, Thst I thought Fitch was out of line for what he said.I thought there was no reason to justify why he(fitch) could say that..
Then AdamG and VM reminded me that GSP tapped, and I had to change my mind saying “Fitch wasn’t out of line” because that would justify(to me) why he(fitch) would say that about GSP..And I also typed lol beside the itchy hand remark..
I DID NOT mean any disrespect to GSP, and have always routed for him..I was just taking back what I said about Fitch.(thats all)..I dont agree with what Fitch said, but I cant say he was out of line..(get it?).Seems like you took alot of offense to my “one” post, but totally left out everything else I have said about GSP in the last week or two..(like i said read other threads)..
I dont have any beef with you, and last time I checked, I am entitled to my opinion(just like you are)..I never meant I thought GSP is scared to get KO’d ,and even if I did? That is what this site is all about..Not everyone is going to agree with you..

b.w;
You are right “we are both GSP fans” and thats cool, but a “truce” usually is called for’ when both parties did something wrong..
It was not wrong for me to have an opinion..This is a MMa forum, right?
Alot of people are going to bump heads because of “opinion”.
You on the other hand decided to “keep track this time” of people that disagreed with your opinion,picked serra to win and/or said “offensive comments” about GSP..And MY name happened to be on your list?. And I did not ever post GSP will lose..He was always my pick, and I typed lol about VM’s itchy comment because it was funny.(nothing wrong with that).. So only one partie was wrong, and I do except your apology, but there is no reason for a “truce”.
…btw. You are doing the same thing Serra fans did when he beat GSP, by calling out all the Serra fans that had Serra winning agian(which is just there opinion)…this is getting way to long, so im just going to say.
I have no beef with you..You just have to lighten up a little bit..Dont take offence to what people say about GSP.(imo that is why we”bumped heads”).Not every fighter has the same fans, and alot of people are going to make offensive comments, to back up their opinions.
I hope next time we cross on a thread it will be, because we agreed on something,

it sure seemed like an offensive remark to me but oh well. just a misundrestanding. i only kept track of peoples names who were calling people nuthuggers among other things ( something i find offensive) for voicing positive opinions on gsp. i dont have any problems w/ those who said bad things about gsp him self just the ones who put people down for supporting gsp, a big difference imo. you wrent one of them and your’e probably right about me lightening up some, bu this was the worst id seen in awhile, a long while and sometines a person Has to stick up for themselves.

GSP completely dis-mantled Matt Sarah. hahahah. The belt is back in Canada, not New York, or the Long Island, or the USA. But in Canada. Sarah is Lucky GSP even allowed him to try to strike. It was very enjoyable watching Sarah get his ribs all busted up and his eyes stapled shut by GSP. Do all you Sarah nuthuggers still think he had a chance?? God St. Pierre Bless You. And thank you for trash talking. That will be all. Peasants.

That St. pierre/Serra fight was crap! I am so pissed that it was stopped because of KNEES. The Heath Herring/Cheick Kongo fight Herring kept feeding Kongo knees and it wasn’t stopped. I think refs should take into account that when a belt is on the line to NOT stop a fight unless a fighter taps or is not protecting himself from PERMANENT DAMAGE. That stoppage just upsets me. The Quarry/Starnes fight was dissapointing. I was expecting these guy to put up fireworks but Starnes just showed what I been saying all along, he has no heart. I do really appreciate quarry calling him out though, it made the fight somewhat enjoyable. Lutter/Franklin fight was o.k. I am just happy Lutter made weight this time. He did do well in the first round and after that I think he just quit. His shot were sloppy and his cardio was horrible, Franklin was picking him apart once he knew we was tired. The Mcarthy/Bisbing fight made me wonder about Mcarthy. He had Bisbing on the groung and almost got him but his stand-up needs improvement. I would like to see mcarthy back agianst Meia. I would also like to see Bisbing against Cote’. They both like to bang and Cote’ is looking good so far, that would not be an easy fight for bisbing and it could be the toughest competition except for Hammill and Evans. I liked Danzig also he really looked good at 155 lbs. I really wanted to see Stout and Clementi, also thought that fight should have been a main card instead of the Danzig fight or the Quarry fight. All in All it was a good night for fighting. ILL WILL is next I say BJ, Wanderlei, and Machida.

Whenever someone enters the ring with a tire around their waist, you know they are in for trouble. Pasta my ass, get in shape bitch. Serra was doing some serious arrogant trash talking as if he really was supposed to win the first fight with GSP. Now does that fool believe that GSP has some shit going on in his mind last year? Kalib and Luter need to be fired. Kalib is a class-less fighter (cussing out the audience) like Nate Diaz (getting high with his bum friends). Luter is a boring, grab your leg hyped up bjj fighter.

I don’t even see a point in the 185 division because nobody is as well rounded as silva. They need to move silva up to 205 or there is no point in the 185 division.

Same with the 170 division. I mean people like Koschek and Sanchez will never beat GSP.

Some of these fighters should be in other promotions they are not UFC material.

I’m very disappointed with the fights lately. I’m getting sick of these BJJ asswipes that roll around on the ground the whole fight. I’m sure its very tactical and difficult but the bottom line is, BJJ is NOT exciting to watch. Strikes are exciting to watch. Watching BJJ is like watching college wrestling.

Bisbing needs to lose the ego, in my book he lost to hamil. Whats the point of bisbing, he can’t fight silva.

The UFC did a great job at buying out the competition (pride) and ruining all of the fighters.

Fedor is over rated crap. Randys win over silvia was boring and very safe. I’m getting sick of these safe fighters that want to win by points.

I’m also sick of these fighters that GAS, I mean if your not in shape WTF are you doing at the UFC, there are many fighters out there who would love to be in your spot and who actually have the discipline and respect for the sport to train and condition properly.

Rampage needs to fight Chuck again because that was a let down fight. Getting tko in the beginning with 1 punch was boring.

It seems like the UFC is more about marketing now than actually having good fight cards.

UFC 83 fight card sucked, I though the last few sucked but its just getting worse.

They should put more of the chinese/jap fighters on these cards because at least they can fight and its not boring. Shit bring Bob Sapp if you have to, at least hes cool to watch. I’d rather see Kimbo (even if he sucks) than have to watch some sorry ass like Kalib or Bisbing or Danzig.

These characters need to go train and practice with other promos first, then come over. Mac Danzig will never beat Sherk so whats the point?

Serra won the first fight with the infamous “puncher’s chance”. He was the inferior fighter, but as they say ‘any given Sunday” or in this case Saturday night the underdog can come out on top if he gets some lucky breaks. However, betting on that happening several times in a row or at all isn’t exactly a smart bet. You have to be impressed with GSP though, his ability to come right at guys and beat them at their own game is incredible. He took Serra whom is known for his BJJ skills to the ground and controlled him with ease, not to mention that he out wrestled Koshcheck.

I hope for Khalid Starnes sake he has some sort of excuse for his behaviour, such as he broke both hands the day before the event but wanted to try to fight but found out he couldn’t about a minute into the first round. Otherwise I’m not sure how that guy will ever live down the fact that every MMA fan who watched that fight will forever think of him as “the Running Man”.

I thought it was a fairly decent pay per view. The first fight with Danzig and Boceck was probably the most competitive fight on the main card. Problematically the fights were rather onesided, at one point I rather thought they might as well have Franklin and Quarry go at it, since neither of them were really fighting long enough to break a sweat, although Quarry certainly got a good cardio work out chasing after Starnes.

As for the fellow asking “what is the point to divisions with dominant champions?” (I paraphrase), time isn’t static. There was a point where you could have asked “What is the point of welter weights? Matt Hughes will dominate for as long as he wants.” But time doesn’t stand still, some guys aren’t ready for a title shot right at the moment. It doesn’t mean two years from now they won’t be ready. GSP wasn’t ready for Hughes in the first fight, but in the rematchs he was clearly the better fighter. Silva has stuffed the middleweight division so far, but there are good fighters out there who are working to get better, eventually one of them will have his number.

Vero,

You can’t lump Danzig in with Starnes. Danzig comes to fight and put on a pretty good show last night (see Bozek’s face). Bisping is not my favorite either but he comes to fight, too. I can’t stand Nate Diaz mostly because of his physical appearance and his rambling after the fights but the guy keeps winning. Kurt P should have beat him but just doesn’t fight smart.

At least, we didn’t have to watch quick stoppages by Steve Mazzagatti last night. To the few that thought Serra got ripped off by the referee for an early stoppage, he was clearly a beaten man and at that point in the fight was offering no resistance. Good job by the referee for stopping the pounding.

Some of you guys are wrong when you speak on MMA. If you find it boring then this is obviously the wrong sport for you. If all you want is striking go watch K-1 fights, and if you just like submission grappling then get some ADCC (Abu Dhabi Combat Club) tapes and watch those. MMA means MIXED MARTIAL ARTS, that is grappling and striking all in one package. Look at the champions and they all do two things great or good. Matt Huges is a perfect example. In the wrestling category he is top teir, jui-jitsu also. Striking..? Well I would call him an ametuer, but improving. He does well with his wrestling and Jiutisu and many of his wins come from pounding guys out and submissions. He countered a Kimura from St. Pierre and got him in an arm-bar. He also pounded BJ Penn and Carlos Newton using the crucifix. That is one reason I never liked Tito Ortiz. He had only one trick, wrestling/ ground & pound. Chuck Liddell is another great example. His wrestling is great and so is his striking. Has anyone seen his submission game? He says he’s a purple belt but I haven’t seen it yet, we may see it though when he goes against Rashad Evans. Liddell uses his wrestling ability to sprawl out of the takedown attempts so he can keep the fights standing. When he knocks his opponents down then he pounds them out. He occasionally goes for takedowns (i.e. Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva) but it is very rare. So for all the new fans who think they know what they are talking about and call this sport ‘boring’ you should take some classes and understand what a guard is and why it is so important. You will really appreciate this sport and many of its fighters once realizing the arts used.

I agree with you Alex. Some true negatives about this sport are the REFS. They just destroy it sometimes for the fans and the fighters. I want someone to tell me a fight when they (refs) stopped a fight and it should not have been stopped. Many of you can AND everyone will have a different answer, which is horrible people. Tito Ortiz/Chuck Liddell, Shamrock/Ortiz, Serra/St.Pierre and Herring/Noguira (that fight should have been stopped after that head kick and many unanswered blows to the head AND he was KOed for a second). All refs need to be consistent. I notice all refs are completly different in terms of “stand-ups” and “stoppages”. WHICH IS CRAP!!! Nba, Nfl and even Nhl refs are all on the same page in terms of fouls and penalties. MMA should follow sute and learn something. ALSO, fire Steve Mazagatti and Yves Lavginge, they are skinny unoriginal ants and I want Big John Back! Make Mario Yamasaki quit, teach Herb Dean on only using one ‘time-out’ a fight night and that big huge buff guy with a weird last name to get off the steriods (I like him though as a ref). A lot of these guys are gonna end up like Larry Lawless…we all know what happened to him. Is that his name Larry Lawless or Landless something like that. The one ref who screwed over Phil Baroni and almost got his face restructured, HIM (even though it didn’t mattter since Baroni lost the rematch against Tanner). World, I just can’t say enough about these freakin refs. I’m changing my major to MMA Referee Science so we can have one decent ref out there in the cage or ring. After doing that for a while I am going to be a Judge. One word, four syllables: CON-SIS-TENT-CY! Athletic State Commissions need to work on it with your refs!

It’s too bad that GSP is better than Fitch in every conceivable category, it’ll be like Silva beating up on Franklin.

The only one who realistically has a decent chance is a lean and motivated BJ Penn (who i think won the first fight) or if GSP moves up and takes on Silva
