“The doctor has released Paulo from the rehabilitation center, and Monday he returns to train. Paulo is already running, making a diet, a set diet and from 102 kilograms (224 lbs) he has already dropped to 95 kilograms (209 lbs). He is leading a normal life and is well motivated. About his return, the WEC will decide the ideal date, but he will be ready when they call.”
Jorge Guimaraes — the manager for WEC Middleweight Champion Paulo Filho — talks about the recovery progress of his fighter. Filho was booked to rematch Chael Sonnen at this past Wednesday’s WEC 33 event. However, he had to pull out of the bout because of depression-related substance abuse and check into a rehab facility. Sonnen went on to fight and defeats Brian Baker at WEC 33, solidifying his status as the number one contender in the middleweight division. Could we see Filho-Sonnen II added to this June’s Faber-Pulver card? We’ll have to wait and see.

I hope he gets his sh*t together because he has not looked good since leaving Japan. Cheal Sonnen is hot on his heels and he needs to get his head back in order and find away to bring back the PRIDE Paulo Filho, who was a bad man!
As bad as Filho has looked, the UFC was actually very lucky that they sent him to th wec and not right to the UFC (were many fans, including yours truly, thought he deserved to be). If he would have went right to the UFC he would have gotten TRASHED.
Then again, being mentally strong is probably the most important part of a fight, and with the state of mind he has been in, he wouldnt have success in any organizations.
He has to be the most dissapointing fighter of the past year. This is a fighter who many believed was top 3 middleweights in the world and he has underachieved. Lets hope he can turn it around and start giving us some good fights.
He’s a very good fighter, and I think he has the potential to one day be a top P4P fighter. But for that, he has to either be willing to fight his friend Anderson (I’ve read that their friendship was the primary reason for Filho going to WEC), or else wait for him to retire…and at the same time, he has to fight some top contenders in the division. Franklin is looking for some way to prove himself without fighting Anderson Silva, and Filho would be a good match-up for him. He could also take the alternate road, and battle some DREAM folk like Sakuraba (who is still badass in my estimation), Kazuo Misaki, Denis Kang, etc. His potential is up there with the Fedor/Anderson type phenomenon, he just needs to stop doing coke or whatever he is rehabilitating for, and LIVE the life of a fighter like Fedor (despite his lack of competition, he maintains his strict training regiment on top of all of the other publicity stunts he is involved with).
I think it is total B.S. what Paulo pulled. He agreed to fight Sonnen. The fight was ANNOUNCED. Then he gets fat and overweight and maybe drugs became a problem and already were or it was just an excuse.
But it is total horseshit for him to be able to “pull” out of the match. He should have fines, a loss on his record if he couldnt make weight, etc, etc…..
He should NOT be able to pull out of a fight that was agreed to and announced just becaues he got fat and didnt train and was depressed and/or drug usage.

Are you serious? He got hurt, it happens all the time, it’s one of the risks of such intense training that comes with being one of the best. lol You clown.
Also, I didn’t know he walked around that heavy. lol Big MW.
Toms Bombs
He went into rehab for a drug habit. It may have been steroids, coke, heroin, speed, who knows. He was not injured.
Something is not right with this Filho rehab story.
The timeline points to not making weight, not substance abuse (possible steroid use). Going into rehab as a coverup seems very extreme, but you be the judge.

01-31-08 Filho vs. Sonnen rematch announced by WEC
http://mmamania.com/2008/01/31/report-wec-champion-paul-filho-and-chael-sonnen-to-rematch-in-march/
According to Paulão Filho’s boxing coach, Josuel Distak, “Last fight I had a lot of weight problems with Paulão, that’s why he wasn’t well. Sonnen asked for a revenge and we accepted. Thanks God this will be Paulão’s last fight at 84 category. After this fight he’ll go up to 93kg category”, said Distak.
Filho wants to go to 205 so he doesn’t have to make weight.

03-29-08 Filho out of rehab
Jorge Guimaraes reports “The doctor has released Paulo from the rehabilitation center, and Monday he returns to train. Paulo is already running, making a diet, a set diet and from 102 kilograms (224 lbs) he has already dropped to 95 kilograms (209 lbs)…”
The fact that Filho has issues with weight, the change in reasons for postponing the fight, a VERY short stint in rehab, and the fact that Guimaraes reported that sometime between 03-13 and 03-29 Filho was tipping the scales at 224 lbs makes me question the real reason for executing the clause in his contract to move the fight to June.
who cares why he pulled out. would u want to see a shitty fight? i think youre all a bunch of bitter chael sonnen fans.
