Gina Carano
The most recognizable female mixed martial arts fighter in the world, undefeated Muay Thai specialist Gina Carano, will compete against Kaitlin Young (4-1) during the EliteXC show debut of “Saturday Night Fights” on CBS this May 31, according to MMAWeekly.com.

Before losing her most recent match to Sara Schneider via submission (armbar) last month, Young dominated an eight-woman tournament put on by BoDog Fights in November 2007. She won all three fights in the same night all with T(KO) stoppages inside of the first minute of the fights.

Young boasts a strong stand up game and will get the chance to test her skills against a top female striker in the sport.

Carano is already known in the network TV world as American Gladiator “Crush,” making her place on the first ever network MMA show inevitable. She has done a lot to help put female mixed martial arts on the map. In fact, She was a part of the first sanctioned female MMA fight in Nevada, beating Rosy Sexton of England via technical knockout in the second round that night.

“Conviction” has since reeled off three more wins all under the EliteXC banner.

Carano is a Muay Thai champion and knows her way around the cage. She’s not scared to hit or be hit. She’s also fun to watch and should provide some excitement when she locks pigtails with Young at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J..

It’s a nice addition to an already stacked card that includes Kimbo Slice, Robbie Lawler, Scott Smith, Ninja Rua, Phil Baroni and others.

I won’t mind seeing two girls going at it, I think the time has come to introduce them to a mainstream MMA organization (I only say mainstream because EliteXC is walking towards that road as I see it).

Onto the topic. I’m not a fan of female MMA unless it’s two females who really have skills and it seems as if we have that there, so I’m looking forward to seeing Gina finally face a quality opponent.

Cant say I am real big on watching the girls fight. Maybe a little sexist but just cant get into it. Which honestly is odd because I am one of the biggest supporters of women learning to fight, at least BJJ for self defense reasons. Which was one of the main reasons it was developed, for those that are weaker and potentially victimized to have a fighting chance. Or maybe it is because I do have juvenile hopes of some clothes come tearing off and thus unintentionally downgrade the class and honor of the fight. Although I still wish.

I haven’t really been able to follow too many of the girl fighters, other than the few I have seen on bodog and they have some pretty good scraps. Very tough.

Who are some of the toughest chick fighters out there? Not by opinion, but who has really proven it?

It is only a matter of time before UFC gives in and allows the girls to fight. It will likely happen when they can draw the big payday from a girl fight.

I tend to agree with you for the most part. I avoid watching women play professional sports if at all possible. It’s usually just slower. I do think fighting is a little different though. Anyone, if they put enought time into it, can become very technically skilled. I can appreciate a fight that has a lot of technique to it. I’ve never seen Gina fight, but supposedly she got skills, so we’ll see. I’m skepticle that of me actually like watching her fight, but I’ll give her a chance.

Ok so you have 3 probably quick KOs and a woman’s match between two brawlers. How is that not awesome action? Also its only Kimbo’s 3rd fight. What do you expect him to just jump right into the deep end before learning how to swim? Its still fun to watch him wreck people.

Funny how ppl say “I don’t want to sound sexist or anything, but I hate watching women’s sports, THEY’RE SLOWER, LESS ATHLETIC, BLA BLA BLA’ LMAO. Truth of the matter is that you ARE being sexist. The women’s World Cup last year was awesome, I was screaming at the TV just as loud as when I’d watch the men’s World Cup. Truth of the matter is that you probably got that subconscious in the back of your head that says “they’re not really good, so don’t watch”. You never got used to watching a woman sport game, in fact, I’d bet you have never watched a women’s sport game from beginning to end. The only way you’ll get rid of that mentality is watching a sport you enjoy (basketball, baseball, soccer), whatever it is, but the female version and from beginning to end. I’m sure you’ll be surprised.

And before anyone say that they’re not as strong as us men, please look online to see a body building competition (female version), most of them can break our necks with one finger.

Gina Carano would kick my ass into next week. I’m not going to debate that. Most women in professional sports could beat most men, most of the time. But, proffesional is the key word in that sentence. Professional male athletes are significantly better at most sports then professional female athletes. That’s all I would argue. Why would I pay money or take up my time watching an inferior product when there is a better one on somewhere else? I’m not saying we shouldn’t support women in sports. Sport are great and should be available to all people. But when it comes to the money making enterprises of professional sports, men are always going to outperform women because the product is better.

The very nature of the MMA fan base will prevent women’s MMA from ever being more than a novelty act. Just scan the comments here for proof. I suppose this is why so many of my friends mock me for loving combat sports. It’s easier to accurately stereotype my fellow fans than it is to stereotype women, that’s for sure.

And the comments here are deceiving. its only a couple chauvanistic @ssclowns spewing idiotic tripe such as andy. I love watching Gina fight, hell she puts on a better performance than most of the fighters out there. I dare Andy to tell Gina to her face that she is a inferior athlete.

Guys relax. I’m not into seeing women fight (yet!!! Haven’t had the chance so far) because compared with seeing guys fight I imagine I won’t be able to scream at the TV for one opponent to punch the other or say “make em bleeeed”.
I think its the way I’ve been brought up, I would never consider hitting a woman or even seeing a woman take serious punishment from another woman. I respect women in the world of sports, there are even some sports were I prefer watching the female equivalent tover the males but not MMA. Saying a woman is less athletic is stupid what we (men) hold the advantage in (e.g. strength) women usually make up for in other attributes (flexibility… etc).

Just because I don’t like the idea of female MMA does’t mean I’m sexist. I could watch Forrest Griffin bleeding all over the octagon and not flinch but I don’t know if I would be the same if it was a female. When I get the chance I’ll watch a few matches and see if my opinion changes. However those who label people sexist at the drop of a hat based on a single sporting concept are as narrow minded as those who they are judging.

Vitriol? That’s a bit of an overstatement. I havn’t been saying anything negatively about professional female fighters, just that they aren’t as good as professional male fighters. That’s not vitriol, that’s just the truth. I guess you guys are a little too politically correct to handle hearing the truth.

I already stated that Gina would destroy me, but I’m not a professional. You honestly think she would beat guys who train MMA full time? I don’t think Gina could beat any featherweight or bantamweight training full time.

According to you guys, I guess that makes me a “sexist” and “chauvanistic”.
Id hit it…
I would consider that to be more “sexist” and “chauvanistic”.

What is sexist, is to not acknowledge that women are worse at MMA, and at all sports. If they weren’t there would be no women’s sports leagues; they would play with the men if they were athletes on the same level. If you’re dumb enough to say women aren’t worse at sports, then you should be willing to let a man fight a woman in the ring. If you would allow that to happen, then you clearly hate women more than anyone on this thread.

What’s funny to me is that people can say that women are just as good as men at sports, when it’s not just physical sports that are gender-specific. If Women are as good as men at sports, why is there female tennis? There’s no chance of them running into each other, the men aren’t going to hurt them by playing rough, so why is it that the women play the women and the men play the men? HMMM…. How about Ping Pong? How about golf?! Why the hell can’t a woman play a man at golf? They can’t compete in any sports. Having women’s sports leagues is a lot like having the under 6 feet NBA. Sure, there would be some very talented basketball players in such a league, but it would be ridiculous to have a league that allows only an inferior category of athletes to compete.

One last point I want to make is that the male organizations are not exclusively male. If a woman could compete in the NBA, she would be there. We see females on college football teams and if any woman gets good enough, she’ll find herself competing with the men.

People seem to be arguing that the women are just as ENTERTAINING as the men. That’s a different argument from saying that they are as GOOD as the men. I find female sports less entertaining, but I can’t say that they are objectively less entertaining than male sports. I can say that women are objectively worse at certain sports, such as golf, basketball, football, Tennis, Soccer, Hockey… I could go on a while. They are objectively worse because in golf, for instance, they will do worse under identical circumstances. Playing the same holes they will lose. Male basketball players will hit a much higher percentage of their shots undefended, their free throw percentages are much higher, and they use a bigger ball (the smaller ball makes it easier to make shots, as the hoop is the same size). Male tennis players will hit the ball much faster, can get more spin on their shots, run faster, react more quickly. That’s right men even have better reaction time than women.

Hell, women can’t even beat men at cooking. The best chefs in the world are men. What aren’t men better at than women? Someone who was defending women should be able to come up with an answer, otherwise they’re just as “sexist” as me.

I tend to agree with you. The first somen’s World Cup (where we beat China), I refused to open the kitchen in my restaurant til the game was over. Hahaha. No, women can’t do every single little thing that elite males can (dunk a basketball like Shaq), but the fundamentals are EVERY bit as sound (hit WAY more free throws and make better assists than Shaq). I’m a decent sized guy (6′ 1″, 225) and we have a few women in my gym that are HUGE compared to me. Sorry, didn’t want to turn this into a sexist arguement. But to sum it up, watch the women fight, I bet you’ll be impressed.

I’m at work so part of my response will have to wait. And I’m not looking to argue, just maybe enlighten a little. But your chef’s comment is off the mark. I’ve worked with amazing female chefs that could stand and thrive under the heat and pressure of a high end kitchen. Hell, Daniel Boulud (of Boulud among other restaurants in N.Y.) thinks Alice Waters (Chez Panisse, consistent winner of best restaurant in the nation)is a goddess in the kitchen.

You’re definitely not looking to argue, because you did not even claim that women were better chefs. Clearly, you agree with me that men are better even at cooking, but you simply want to remind me that that doesn’t mean that women can’t make good chefs. I am well aware of that fact. The same goes for the above comment about female weightlifters. When someone says that men are stronger, they are not saying that NO woman is stronger than ANY man, but that the strongest people in the world are men, and men are stronger than women overall. I’m saying that the men have an advantage in all sports, and no woman is the best, or near the best, at any sport. The whole gender segregation of sports is sexist against women and men. Women don’t even play men at chess. At freaking Chess!

Yeah so what. Doesn’t change a fact that I’d rather watch A level women than C level men in MMA – they are faster and more technical. Just because A level women can’t hang with A level men doesn’t mean I should stop watching all MMA besides A level men, nome saying? It’s still entertaining when you have 2 trained evenly matched MMA fighters going at it.
