Robbie Lawler vs. Scott Smith EliteXC fight slated for CBS Saturday Night Fights on May 31
By: James Iannotti
EliteXC and CBS today issued their highly anticipated news about the debut of mixed martial arts programming on CBS, revealing that EliteXC Middleweight Champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (15-4) will put his 185-pound strap on the line against The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 4 alum Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith (13-4), according to ProElite.com.
As expected, heavyweight bareknuckle brawler turned professional fighter, Kimbo Slice, will headline the show at The Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., against a soon to be named opponent.
Here’s a snip from Kelly Kahl, Senior Executive Vice President, CBS Primetime:
“We’re excited to introduce broadcast television viewers to America’s fastest growing sport with this prime time event. EliteXC is putting together a lineup card that showcases the unique personalities, world-class athleticism, and raw power and emotion that characterizes mixed martial arts.”
The match up between Lawler and Smith was talked about for Smith before his EliteXC debut against Kyle Noke at Street Certified: “Kimbo vs. Tank” last month. Shaw mentioned that the winner of the bout would probably be next in line for a shot at Lawler’s title.
Shaw is apparently a man of his word … at least in this case.
This will be Lawler’s first defense of his title since winning the belt with a third round technical knockout of Ninja Rua back in September 2007. He’s a fighter who loves to sling the leather — 12 of his 15 wins have come via (technical) knockout and he’s currently riding a four-fight win streak.
Smith also has enjoyed recent success, winning his last two fights with first- and second-round (t)ko’s over Jeff Morris and Noke. His style is also to stand and bang with his opponent, making a match up with Lawler a recipe for a stand up war.
This is the reason EliteXC signed Smith. He adds a recognizable name to the company’s roster and provides exciting match ups with guys like Lawler who are also looking to stand and trade.
This is a decent start for what needs to be a great card — there’s a lot riding on this CBS partnership. EliteXC has a lot of pressure on them to put the best fights together that they can for the debut of MMA on network television.
We’ll have additional updates on this show as soon as possible, including female MMA sensation, Gina Carano, also possibly making a return to action this same evening. For now things appear to be off to a good start.

That should be a bomb fest!
very good fight.
Two bangers but lawler will easily prevail.
smith is to one dimensional….lawler in the first.

Scott Smith in the Upset.. Round 2 Head Kick KO.
Should be a bangin’ good time.

No…Scott has been on a tear recently. either one can get knocked out..this will not be a easy one for Robbie.
this a good excuse to stay in on Saturday night.

yes it is hand of steel lol….sam stout has stones in his nick name….”hands of stone”
This is by far one of the most important MMA events in history, for what is at stake. This is the first event on primetime TV. Everyone with a TV can tune in.
The production. The fight card. the marketing has to be second to none.
Not even the UFC can say it was the firstto hit a major network like a CBS..NBC..ABC..this is super huge. I’m rooting for a sick fight card. This fight is perfect to be added to the mix.

I agree. If it’s done good enough it could easily grab a lot of new fans for the sport. It’s too bad the UFC isn’t doing it, I think they have more ideal fighters for prime time. EliteXC has a few, but then you see Kimbo’s name.
Question is who is more technical of a striker?
I guess it doesn’t matter anyway since it’s probably neither.
Smith is gonna drop Lawler me thinks. But it will be from a weird angle that someone will call a lucky shot and say he “got caught”

I couldn’t agree with you more. This event really could be a catalyst to take things to another level (beginning with the TUF 1 series and finale). It could showcase the many diverse sides to MMA. The positive and negative. Once people have more resources to anything, they can formulate more well-thought out opinions, and I’m almost positive they will agree that MMA is the greatest sport in the world.
If I was fighting on this card, I would be honored!!

agreed…Whilst I don’t live in America….I think this show will be a big thing for MMA going forward, great fight to have on the card, hope the entire card stacks up well.
Lawler wins but a step up for Smith. If he were in the UFC he would be fighting some average dude like Terry Martin or Drew Mcfedris. Good luck to him.

This will be an exciting brawl, not much of an mma fight. I don’t mind a good brawl here and there, but its seems like 1 dimensional Brawls, is all EliteXC is going to showcase with its groundbreaking mainstream mma deal.
Featuring fighters like Lawler and Kimbo, doesnt depict mma accurately. They should be promoting more well rounded fighters like Nick Diaz or jake sheilds.
I am not saying that these fights wont be entertaining, but the EliteXC has a huge platform to display mma to the rest of America, and I dont feel that the show that they are planning, will depict the sport I love, accurately enough.
For the ignorant American’s that just think the sport is Barbaric, these fights will do nothing to change their oppinions, and its a shame.
I like the smith lawler fight but kimbo makes me nervous. Is he what we want peoples first impression of MMA to be? What if Gina fights, is that good or bad?
lawler via smith not being very good
Mania, can you find out if this will be broadcast in HD or not?
Didn’t lawler have to give up his belt or am I mistaken?
great crowd pleasing match-up. i guess shaw does have a little bit of brains. i thuoght he would have all mismatches
Didn’t lawler have to give up his belt or am I mistaken?
he was stripped of his icon belt, but i dont know the elite xc. this may not be a title shot. your right it is a little confusing. help anyone? mania?
Dana Dana you moron!
Jesus, I just watched the Frank Shamrock/Phil Baroni fight, my first time watching an Elite XC event… Is that shit staged or what? Cheesy lines from the commentators, goofy entrances from both fighters, plenty of acting going on inside the cage… Elite XC is definitely the WWE of MMA.

Kinda like WEC/UFC.

So Lawler had both titles at one time? That would be like Anderson Silva being the UFC middleweight champion as well as the WEC middleweight champion? Why did they do that?

thnks for the info NC-17. they let lawler hold both belts because they are not yet a legitimate mma org at this time imo.

I was going to say the same thing john. I think having Lawler and Smith is good, but EliteXC and CBS need to showcase everything that MMA is about. Everyone loves seeing good striking, but if this is an introduction to MMA for people, they need to showcase the other aspects.
Great fight for EXC to break into the mainstream with. Should be a quick, exciting slugfest and I’m looking forward to it!

Thats exactly what i was thinking. plus it isn’t going to really change many minds when their main eventer is famous for illegal street fighting on the internet. this will just encourage all the wannabe thugs out there and make them think they can do the same thing.
i also find it amusing that a guy that couldn’t cut it in the ufc is fighting for a belt in Elite XC

~~get off your high horse…
i mean one dimensional fights? come on, im glad most are excited to see FREE fights on tv. Lawler and even kimbo are exciting, and thats the reason why most of us have tuned to MMA since the beginning, for EXCITING fights like lawlers! whats so dimensional about fighters knocking the crap out of eachother??? Are we now judging fights based on how technical or cool a guys moves are?? It has the word “MIXED” martial arts for a reason!
when you say it doesnt depict the sport, i think you are mistaken because MMA has always been about every or “any” style of fighter. fyi, there are alot of other good tournament events out there, so if your concern is brawling or one dimensional fighters, go check out the bjj mundials or something that is pure technical. i on the other hand, dont mind seeing lawler duke it out in truE MMA STYLE!~~
Get some Scott!!! UTC ROCKS!!!! Roseville!!!
This should be a great fight for the casual fan…or someone that is just flipping through channels. Yes, the UFC has the best roster, no question about that, but the average Joe doesn’t know the rankings, and probably doesn’t even care. But if they see two guys in there banging then they’ll like what they see.
Inexperienced people want to see stand up wars that end in knock outs. They should get that in this fight and the Kimbo fight.
As far as the hardcore people, like those that read this site, who cares. Most will watch any free MMA they can find, and this card is no different. So for this first show it’s more important to appeal to the casual fan, and this fight is perfect for that.
Good start for the CBS deal. I hope they both market this well so we can get more sat. night fights in the future.

That’s a good point. The uneduacted and mainstream fans (or UFC fans as I call them) don’t normally care for the ground game, a lot of people find it boring. Those people only really like to see people get KO’d, and thats what they’ll get. But john’s right, the true, hardcore fans will shake thier heads for the most part because we all know it could have been done better.
Like everyone else, I do agree that this will be an exciting fight. Actually, a fight that I am looking forward to. I don’t remember a single person complain about the Scott Smith/Pete Sell fight that only took place standing and banging? I actually think that Smith has a good chance. They both have pretty solid chins - otherwise they wouldn’t be bangers! They have each only been KO’d once. Smith was KO’d by James Irvin a while back, and of course Lawler was KO’d by THE MAN, Nick Diaz. I am going to take Smith in this fight by omoplata.

Why do you find that amazing? That is the equivalent of saying that you can’t believe that a player that couldn’t make and NFL roster is starting for an Arena League team. The difference is the quality. The UFC is the NFL of fighting, they have the majority of the best fighters (especially in America).
If you can’t make it in the UFC, you go to a smaller promotion. Rather than being a little fish in a big pond, you are now a big fish in a small pond.
WW ake Shields fought Mike Pyle in a fight that was supposed to be for the belt. Pyle = UFC reject. Now, Jake will be facing Drew Fickett for the belt. Drew Fickett = UFC reject.
Rather than being “amazing”, it is actually the norm.
Look at champs in other orgs, most can not compete with UFC talent. Can you imaging Doug The Rhino Marshall in the UFC LHW division? Can you imagine KJ Noons competing with the best WW’s in the UFC? One word answer for all of the above: NO.

A few misspellings I can deal with; however I can’t deal with arrogant, cocky pricks that talk down on everyone because they don’t watch 123lb guys fight in Shooto.

I was going to say the same thing john. I think having Lawler and Smith is good, but EliteXC and CBS need to showcase everything that MMA is about. Everyone loves seeing good striking, but if this is an introduction to MMA for people, they need to showcase the other aspects.
Exactly. With this huge opportunity comes big responsability and having an idiot like Gary shaw worries me about the way he will choose to portray mma to the American public. Chewed out? I was explaining the “amazingness” behind why former UFC fighters were offered title shots in other organizations.
I MIS-READ IT, MY BAD (like I already said)
Also, as a sidenote, Scott Smith did KO Kyle Noke before getting a title shot - it wasn’t instant.
You gotto love ViolentMike! I love reading ish like this.
Scott smith also KO somebody before he beat Kyle Noke, so its not exactly an instant title shot. Its actually the Norm, come to another organization from a better organization, get to wins under your belt and figh for the title, how could such a stupid issue even start such a problem.
Get em’ Mike!
I think this fight is going to come down to who has a better chin and i think that is scott smith. scott has power that equals or exceeds that of lawler and i also think he has a better chin. This should be the headliner not the side show kimbo slice.
I am hearing rumors that the main event of the eliteXc CBS debut will be Kimbo vs. Ken Shamrock. I hope this is true because as sad as this is, Ken is the best possible opponent for Kimbo that eliteXc has to offer.
i’m starting to like elitexc ALOT! its gonna be a slugfest!!

I haven’t read every post in great depth but got the jist of the story.
I think that UFC, Elite-XC etc are forgetting how this all started.
Putting boxers in with wrestlers etc. Effectively mixing the martial arts. These skills have now evolved where everyone has a combination of a few of these martial art skills.
However, these organisations insist on putting on a show in the name of business and not mma.
Unfortunately I feel they risk destroying our beloved sport, which they have spent enormous time and money building successfully for the sake of an entertaining street fight.
Just banging all the time will see a fate like boxing. People will eventually get seriously hurt, become vegetables or worse. The viewing public will diminish.
They need to go back to the roots.
That being said, Lawler will destroy Smith lol

Not that it matters.. But i thought it was Scott “Hands Of STEEL” Smith…not stone?
I heard stone a few times.
you must be a bored person to point these kind of thins out. but you are right
IMO I think the elite shows on cbs will help out the ufc more than people think, here’s why my mom is 53 yrs old she knows I watch mma alot more UFC than anything but she called me up an said the yuf is on cbs now. I was like no its a different company than I started to think alot of people that dont watch the UFC knows about the UFC and they will watch Elite and think its the UFC than relize that it is not and than goes and try’s to find the real UFC.follow,But any case I myself cant wait for this card looks like gary is trying his hardest to make this a top notch SHOW he isputting guys (and gals) in there wh are going to bang it out for the fans.
i love lawler fights
just wish he was back in the ufc
5 round title fights are not good for lawler as he throws everything hes got in the first couple of rounds
i dont think cardio is the issue he could possibly be a little more selective with his striking… what he has is raw power rather than slick technical striking like anderson silva
silva appears to have the kind of striking that could go 5 rounds without tiring
this should be an awesome fight
from time to time smith seems to not be up for a brawl against lawler he wont have a choice… i guess he has a slight choice… early KO or brawl then ko
Robert Duran is the man with the “Hands of Stone”. They used to say “piedre de stone” or something. I hate when fighters can’t be original with their nicknames. You guys just aren’t trying.
I train at utc in roseville cali in the gym that scott smith and james irvin own,Scott is a rock at #185 and truly has hands of steele,i have no dobt scott will knock out robby in the 1st round.
We will all be watching this one. Papa, Nana and the gang will be cheering you on “BIG TIME”….Aunt Suzy
