Jon Koppenhaver (5-1) will fight Yoshiyuki Yoshida (9-2) in a welterweight bout on the UFC 84: “Ill Will” undercard at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 24, according to UFC.com.
“War Machine” announced that he would compete on the pay-per-view (PPV) show shortly after he was cleared of a felony assault charge last month; however, he did not mention an opponent at that time.
The former contestant on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 6 will make his second appearance inside the Octagon while his opponent, Yoshida, will make his debut. Koppenhaver was victorious in his own premier, defeating Jared Rollins via technical knockout in a blood-soaked brawl at TUF 6 Finale.
Yoshida is a Japanese product who is enjoying an eight-fight win streak, competing in smaller promotions overseas such as Greatest Common Multiple and Shooto. According to the report, most of his success can be attributed to a “ferocious ground and pound attack.”
UFC 84 features the 155-pound champion, BJ Penn, taking on former division titleholder, Sean Sherk, in the main event of the evening. Light heavyweight bouts between Wanderlei Silva and Keith Jardine, and Tito Ortiz and Lyoto Machida, are also receiving top billing.

Note that another UFC 84 welterweight bout between Jason Tan and Dong Hyun Kim was also made official in the report.

war machine will eat this chump up. the guy saves his aggression for fights and puts all he has into them.
GO WAR
I like that the UFC has started putting more fights on the cards. The next three fight cards have at least eleven fights.
Awesooome. His finish of J-Roc was insane. That finish came out of nowhere. cant wait to see him fight again.
I’m pulling for Yoshiyuki Yoshida. Watching Yoshida break into the Cage Force tournament and knock out a former Pancrase champion and a former Shooto champion was amazing. I never expected to see it. If anything, I thought Yoshida would be another casualty for Akira Kikuchi’s rise to the top. As a Kikuchi fan, I was disappointed that he lost to Yoshida, but also happy for Yoshida. The tournament organizer actually wound up exporting the winner to the UFC, which is nice to hear. I hope Yoshida has a successful career in the UFC. His fights in Cage Force were great; he showed intense striking power and a relentless ground n’ pound attack complete with vicious elbows. His style definitely looks refined for the UFC rules.
I’m actually surprised that Dong Hyun Kim was mentioned as almost an afterthought at the end of the post. He’s one of Korea’s best mixed martial arts exports and fans have been talking about him for a long time. He’s got an outstanding record in DEEP. His fighting style is unique; he’s a lanky welterweight with good striking power.
I would like to see War Machine get some wins in a row. I wonder if this next fight will be as exciting as his fights against Tommy Speer and JRock.
this war machine will get whooped j-roc has no game! but i like the war i hope he wins and the ufc has to put more fights on the fight cards to help clear things up a little bit faster paz ayll.
Great card! This is a must see event with all the awsome LH bouts. Cant wait.

WOW, thanks for the info there Ryan B!!!!!!! What promotions other than UFC do you primarily watch, and what country are you from?
I like War Machine and all but I will have to pull for Yoshida in this one. It is not surprising that there is not much buzz concerning Yoshida around here as you have to delve deep (if from USA) to find out about what else is going on in the MMA world…
Here is to a good fight!

Yeah thats what I want to know. I wish I had the chance to watch the promotions like DEEP that he has so knowledge about.
You cant be living in the USA, to have such knowledge about whats going on in the organization. Thanks for the breakdown on those 2 fighters.
His fight with JRock was great, hope he brings it all to the octagon again for another WaR! This card is looking great, Wilson, War Machine, BJ, Sherk, Lyoto, Jardine, Tito, Wandi, and there are still like 6 fights to be named, CRazY!! Thanks Dana!!!!

Yes…Nice write up Ryan B. You sound like you actually know what you’re talking about.
Poor John is probably about to get a beatdown. No easy fights if u want to get to the top.
i liked war machine on tuf and would have liked to have seen him step up and fought mac when the opportunity arose. he probably would have lost , but i know he could have done better than kolisci did. i still swear that tommy almost tappedin his fight w/ war machine, but thats old news and this story has gotten me allfired up for the new tuf season, escpecially the premier and ufc fight nite. 4 hrs of live mma whoooo!

Yes, such an articulate, wonderful post. I want to marry it.
I’m from the U.S. A lot of the overseas organizations aren’t easily available to me, so I catch what I can through play-by-plays. Checking out every website possible helps, too. If you lurk around Sherdog.net forums, you’ll find a lot of highlight videos of these fighters, as well. There are probably a lot of videos on YouTube and DailyMotion on various fighters. I’m just interested in all kinds of mixed martial arts.
Interesting enough, Jared “J-Roc” Rollins was in the same tournament in Japan that Yoshiyuki Yoshida eventually wound up winning. Rollins was stopped by Akira Kikuchi’s strikes. Rollins went on to fight Jon Koppenhaver in the UFC, Yoshida wound up defeating Kikuchi, and now, Yoshida’s fighting Koppenhaver. Funny how things like that work out.

Automation: U r getting there buddy. I actually have enjoyed many of your recent posts. I know PRIDE and the UFC and that is something everyone on this site can catch up in. As for the organizations that dude knows about… I only wish to be able to watch those organizations events.
Whats with all the love for War Machine? Didn’t he and 5 other dudes bum rush some guy outside a gas station? That POS should never see the inside of the octagon for the rest of his life.

hell ya!!! he messed up and made a mistake. everyone boo war machine.
Breaking someones face with 5 of your buddies is hardly messing up and making a mistake. I guess I’m romantic but I see MMA fighters as the opposite of street thugs.
Just my opinion.

how about citing the source of your accusation so it doesn’t sound like you are talking out of your rectum.

b.w. may have a point. Rob might have been the one in the gang and War got in a one on one. Still pretty unacceptable. Then again I’m just a a-hole with a computer

Your wish can become a reality. I’m new here, so I’m not sure if I quoted correctly, but you’re right about PRIDE and UFC. Two very popular organizations (one is now defunct). Many of PRIDE’s fighters have come from smaller organizations, like the one(s) from which Yoshiyuki Yoshida emerged. It’s relatively easy to find videos of these promotions online. You’d be surprised. Takanori Gomi and Anderson Silva were both Shooto champions, for example. You might find some videos of those two in their Shooto days. Look for Nathan Marquardt’s fights in Pancrase. Marquardt was dominating his division in Pancrase before becoming one of the UFC’s top middleweights. It’s all interesting. DailyMotion and YouTube are two good video sharing websites to start.
