I have to favor Frank for this fight as far as experience is concerned but I am going to have to take Cung to win this fight. He [Le] is an athlete with a God-given talent for fighting. When he used to spar with Frank back in the day, a lot of people will remember that he used to throw Frank around like a rag doll, like his little sister. It was almost a joke how bad he worked Frank over back then. I am sure Frank remembers that. Cung is a good wrestler, has great throws and he kicks like a mule. The longer the fight goes the more pressure that will be on Frank to score points.

Strikeforce lightweight contender Josh “The Punk” Thompson tells PunchDrunkGamer that based on what he’s seen in training the March 29th title fight between middleweight champion Frank Shamrock and challenger Cung Le may be a lot closer than people think.

All Frank Shamrock fights are a Joke! What a waste of such a talent. As soon as Cung starts tagging him up, Frank will do something illegal. He is notorious for finding away out of a fight, with out actually letting his opponent beat him.

I really cant stand this guy. He has amazing talent and skills as a fighter but I really hate him. As much as we bash Ken, he isnt half the idiot that Frank is!

The crowd is going to be in hysteria for the entire fight between these two. They are both from and train in San Jose, and the fight is taking place in… San Jose. I wonder if the crowd will be split 50/50 or if the crowd will be pulling for one of the fighters? I truely find it difficult to root for Frank Shamrock, but he is a home town hero. Even if Frank was my next door neighbor and married my cousin I’d still root against him. Just because a fighter is from the same town as you does not mean you need to love them. Sure, it gives you a reason to root for them when they are against an unknown fighter, but a fighter’s hometown does not dictate how much I like a fighter.

Cung Li is one of the nastiest fighters in the world… Cung also fights with AKA, so you know his take and submission defense are atleast on par with the average, his stand up is second only to prolly Anderson Silva. I think Frank is gonna get worked in the first, and go down hard in the second.

Id love to see Cung Li fight in the UFC… he could dismantle most of the division.

Cung Le is an excellent striker and has solid throws. But he’s far from complete. His wrestling has not been tested, and he has as much ground game as Kongo. He won’t even ground and pound guys after he gets them down, because he and his coached know he might get caught with something. He’s still new to the game and can still improve, but right now he would lose to someone like Patrick Cote.

The main reason Josh Thompson is saying that about Shamrock……its the fact that Frank Shamrock called Josh mma’s FIRST openly gay fighter.

Sure Thompson is gonna try and say anything he can to try and counter that. It is impossible, taht line from Shamrock was a classic and PROBABLY WILL NEVER BE TOPPED. I mean he said it on a major mma show(well Strikeforce, not UFC major, but anyhow)

Shamrock may not have found a way out of the middle of many fights, but he sure as hell ducked Bas Rutten after he beat Tito. Bas wanted to drop down to middleweight but Shamrock retired to ‘go make a living’ One must wonder just how much Frank or Ken might have evolved if they hadn’t taken substantial layoffs

At first I thought Frank would win this fight by submission fairly quickly. However, the more I think about it th more I’m leaning towards Cung le. Of course if it goes to the ground, you have to favor Frank’s grappling skills over Cung’s considering we haven’t really seen them tested before. But what if Frank can’t take Cung le down? I don’t think he’ll be able to. Frank also has decent stand up skills but, similar to Anderson Silva, Le is a different kind of striker. Le also has remarkable takedowns and throws and very good takedown defense as well. I don’t see Le finishing this but picking Frank apart on thier feet for the majority of the rounds. Either way, I’m anticipating this one almost as much as these upcoming UFC’s.

I agree ViolentMike, I think Anderson would take ‘em with not much trouble at all. Chung Le has gotten to much credit for what he’s done, he hasnt fought much competition at all, his striking has looked pretty good, but he hasnt realy fought many other accomplished strikers at all. When Frank is the best person you have fought(going to fight) you shouldnt be getting compared to Anderson.
Remember, Anderson has DESTROYED Hendo, Rich, and everyone else for a long long time. Compare Chung’s credentials to that, and talk to me.
Le’s striking looks nice and is fancy, but does not compare to the ability Anderson has, it’s unreal, it’s like magic, or cheat codes.

actually there is some interesting information and background to this.

frank and josh actually trained together for quite a while and there was apparently some heat between the two during sparring and grappling sessions, it got particularily magnified when frank left American Kickboxing Academy to start shamrocks submission fighting

in 2006 frank shamrock questioned josh thompsons heterosexuality by commentating on the pink stripe in his hair and claiming that he would soon be “the first openly gay mixed martial artist”

josh thompson responded by saying that frank shamrock was a punk and always backs down from real challenges and should “stop living off of his victory over tito”

i think that josh thompson just said that cung would beat him because he and cung train together and are good friends.

Frank shamrock left the ufc cause he was scared to fight tito again cause he knew he would lose a rematch and he would never beat chuck. He retired and then went to fight people who couldnt make it in the ufc. Tito was out of shape then and would destroy frank now. If frank thought he was so good he would come back and fight tito again and lose or come back and fight anderson silva and lose.
