“I think I need a change. I’m not performing to my ability. I don’t know what I need to fix, but I need to fix it. I’m going to go away and fix different things. I should have finished the fight. Period.”
– Jorge Gurgel tells MMAWeekly.com that he will look to change up his training routine going forward and it will include some work with Mark DellaGrotte (Kenny Florian’s guru). Gurgel recently outpointed John Halverson on all three judges scorecards at UFC 82: “Pride of a Champion.” However, it is not the result with which he or his fans were pleased. In fact, all five of his fights have gone the distance inside the Octagon (3-2).

Yeah, both him and Rich Franklin.
spend more time in the gym, less time in the tanning bed.
this guy will never be on a main event card again i hope he likes the undercard
You couldn’t finish Danny “Baloney Sandwich” Abbaddi. You have no business being in the octagon. You are a terrible and boring fighter, and the only reason anyone outside of your immediate family would watch you fight is for the chance to see you get your boring fanny [changed to avoid being moderated] kicked. Stick with training people, and remember, ‘those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach.’
I agree. He doesnt deserve to be in the UFC. He has a big name because of his affiliation with Rich Franklin, and his photo shoot in GQ (along with GSP and others) - i have no idea what he was doing in that class.
theres a picture on sherdog under his profile of him trying to kiss franklin! what the hell is that all about?!
I believe the real problem with Gurgel is that he is fighting above his weight class. He shouldn’t be in the UFC. He should be in the 145 or 135 pound division in the WEC. He is too small for UFC lightweight division. I mean come on, even if he could pull a crazy streak of wins, could you realistically see him fighting a Sean Sherk? a BJ Penn?
The face mask photo is this Gurgels biggest highlight and he even had to share that with Franklin.
The fights that I have watched of Gurgel he gets winded very quick!! Please work some cardio
I really thought this guy was gonna be something big, It seemed like he had a buzz going…oh well, I guess it could be worse for you Jorge. Boring wins are better than boring losses.
I agree also, maybe a drop in weight class could work.

Don’t be hating on Danny Abbaddi…..he is a ninja for sure
george grugel sucks period
hes just to small for a 155er, he should be in the WEC at 145.
then he would get whooped by U.Faber or Jens Lil Evil Pulver.
He would do good in the WEC I think. He’s not a horrible fighter, and he’s got heart to never back down or stop fighting. We’ve all seen him be able to take a beating and keep going. Too bad you have to finish fights to be good in the UFC. As someone said before, he should be fighting at a lighter weight class, and again, the WEC would be perfect for him.
George Grugel……………….(cricket, cricket, cricket)
YOU SUCK!!!! Best thing you can do is just go jump off a cliff for making us suffer…and some of us die of boredom while watching you fight. Doesnt matter what organization you go with or what you do…just go jump off a cliff RIGHT NOW!!! i dont want anyone to have to suffer anymore!! GO GET A JOB IN A TANNING SALON!!!
george grugel sucks period
exactly…he looks satisfied with just performing a good fight and not winning…
i remember he use to think he was the shit in the ultimate fighter BUT HE COULDN’T EVEN WIN HIS FIRST FIGHT
HE SUCKS BIG TIME
man, there is allot of hating on george. Granted his stint in the ufc hasnt been great, but if you want to hate on guys that just get decisions, well than we should look at sean sherk, karo, etc. On tuf 2 he had one of the better fights on the show even though he was probably in a weight class thats twice what he should be. he should definately drop to 145 just like Leonard Garcia. Yes all his fights in the ufc went to decision but look at all his ones before that. With the exception on one loss he won all of them by submission. Maybe he focuses too much on his stand up and take his bjj for granted, but dont say he sucks. He can definately make an impact in the wec for sure.

He doesn’t even do that. His fights are all lame except for when Alvin Robinson pounded on his face for 10 minutes.

He needs more stand up but i doubt it. He just likes to be on the ground and grind with his apponent.
oh, thats ok gurgel, please take as much time as u want, i wouldnt even be upset if u never come back
My favorite Jorge Gurgel moment was the beatdown he received from Jason Von Flue. Remember when he was walking around the TUF house talking all that smack and then come crunch time he folded under pressure like a Kmart blue light special lawn chair with a nut missing! That was the absolute best moment ever on The Ultimate Fighter series by far. Poor Boy Jorge, his face looked like hgamburger meat afterward. Rich Franklin’s “Mini Me” needs to fight guys with his ability, he should comb the local Jr. Highs looking for school yard bullies so he could get some needed striking practice, even then he would probably have a losing record! I can totally picture some 13 year old kid dropping bombs on him!
One last thing, you ever notice on this site that people always use the saying “He’s got heart” to describe guy’s that always lose and lose consistently? I guess thats why Jorge Gurgel has so much heart and not enough wins! Good luck in the future Boy Jorge your gonna need it, then again watching him get beaten like a red headed step child always brightens up my day!
I like Gurgel. Othre than the fact that he acts as if he is Rich franklin’s Cabbanna boy, he is a solide fighter.
He would have a much better record if he wasnt so worried about putting on exciting fights for the fans. He is a fighter who chooses to loose an exciting fight, rather than win a boring fight and as a fan, who spends a lot of money ordering pay per view, I cant hate on him for that.
I will tell you one thing, boring ass Jake O’brian could learn a thing or 2 from Gurgel.
He refuses to use his bread and butter ju jitsu. I will tell you one thing, watch the 1st round of the Gurgel vs. Robinson fight and Gurgel put on one of the best displays of passing the guard that I have ever seen. His ju jitsu is really tight, he just refuses to use it!

ha, i thought that was funny that u said we should look at sean sherk and karo because they get the decision like gurgel
Those two are 2 of the most hated fighters on mma boards, they get more crap then gurgel because of there decisions

He’s riding the piggy back of Ace. Gru is a competitor, but he’s not a top ranked fighter by a long shot. I don’t know where his new training is going to take him, but it’s about damn’ time. I have little faith in his ability to evolve into a complete MMA fighter.
Gurgel just likes to look good which makes it even funnier when Alvin Robinson made him look like that monster out the Goonies lol

So basically you’re saying that he’s not good enough to cut in the UFC abd he should step down to a weaker organization? In other words you agree with everybody else, he sucks! Good job.
even though hes not a great fighter he is still pretty good but hes to small to compete in the UFC.aftrer all he has gone the distance in all of his fights.IMO he would be a top 5 145er in the WEC even though he already lost to Mark the Machine Hominick at 155 in the octagon.his UFC record is 3-2 all decisions,so he really is 0-0-5 no wins no losses all ties

He would be a monster in the 145 lb division of the WEC, but he is a pretty big lightweight and I am not so sure that he would be able to cut to 145 lb, but if he could he would be a beast in that division!
Ray: When it comes to the WEC, it is clearly weaker than the UFC but not the 145 lb division. Since there is no 145 lb UFC division, all the top level 145 lb fighters that Zuffa signs are shipped to the WEC. As a result the 145 lb division of the WEC is solid and very exciting. If I were the UFC, I would consider adding some of Urijah Fabers 145 lb title defense fights onto the UFC pay per view cards, to introduce the UFC only fans to the 145 lb division which is very exciting and features 1 hell of a champion in Faber. The problem with that is it might be too much of a loss for WEC cards.
I think when Faber and Pulver fight for the title, that fight should at least be held on a UFC card. Jens is a household name in the UFC and he is a tough guy at 145 lb. For the fans that dont know about Faber, throw him on a UFC card and watch the beating he gives pulver and then all the UFC fans would know about him and will want more of the 145 lb division, which either gives the UFC a chance to create its on division, or it will make more fans of the WEC, either way it would result in PROFIT for Zuffa!

AGREED!!! Jorge fighting in the WEC at 145 would be much more well suited for him. But then again, he would never be champ there, but he would be MUCH more competitive and exciting, and he’d be able to win a few fights, and just maybe, finish an opponent. But then again, I don’t see anyone beating Urijah Faber right now, unless someone from Japan comes over, or an elite UFC 155er drops down, or possibly even if Miguel Torres starts to eat more than 3 meals a week and moved up to 145 I think that he’d be able to challenge Urijah.

Its funny that you say that, since Sean “steroids” Sherk and Karo “Do you know who I am” Parysian are both definitely in the Top 3 of “Most hated on mma fighters on the internet”.
Let’s compile a list here to help Jorge out here:
1. Learn how to strike
2. Be aggressive
3. Have an actual desire to hurt your opponent
4. Cut a weight class aka GO TO THE WEC
5. Cross-train like hell
6. Find a better teammate than ‘Ace’ because his style obviously can’t make you the champion.
I cant emphasize cross training enough; Jorge’s jiu jitsu skills are good but not great ie. the Pwnage by Alvin Robinson. Even if Robinson is a heavier fighter if his skills were up to par it wouldn’t matter; I recommend at least MFS or ATT.
All of you guys who are bashing Jorge Gurgel are complete and utter idiots. Jorge Gurgel has never had a boring fight inside the octagon period.
Also, Jorge Gurgel walks around at 185-190, so there is no way what so ever that Jorge can drop to 145. Jorge Gurgel is one of the best BJJ artist on the planet.
Yes he throws away his gameplan when he fights, but this guy if he takes it down to the ground, can submit almost anybody and anytime..
Jorge Gurgel is a fantastic fighter, and an exciting fighter. So what he is 3-2 inside the octagon, at least he accepts fights and proves he has a chin.
Gurgel fights tough dudes (minus Danny Abaddi), unlike fighters like… MICHAEL BISPING.

I dislike Karo’s personality as much as anyone, but in spite of all his decision wins, none of them are boring. Sherk, yes, he’s a boring cheating dry-humper, but Karo is fun to watch.

A fantastic fighter puts together WINS and DOESN’T throw away game plans, that’s what seperates Champions, contenders and never-will-be’s and then there is the special category for Boy Jorge Gurgel: Never had a chance but jump in there kid my guy needs someone to kick the hell out of for target practice.

Yeah, Jorge Gurgel should just leave HIS OWN CAMP and go to MFS and ATT.
Guess who Jorge Gurgel’s trainer is… wait for it.. wait for it… It’s Jorge Gurgel!!
“Jorge’s JJ is good, but not great.”
Hm… he is a black belt in BJJ, and in the first round of the Robinson/Gurgel fight, Gurgel showed what ground skills he had. But guess what… Gurgel for the first time in his career… wait for it… wait for it.. He gassed..
“Jorge Needs to learn how to strike.”
Um.. his 5 fights, he strikes, and he connects. Yeah he does not knock them out, but he connects.. so he knows how to strike.
“Ace style cant make him a champion..”
Hm.. wasn’t Rich Franklin a Middleweight Champion at one point in his career??
Oh yeah, you know who trains Rich Franklin… wait for it.. JORGE GURGEL.
“Cut a Weight Class”
Jorge Walks around at 185-190.
“be Agressive”
lol.. you kill me. Yeah Jorge just walks in and throws half punches and doesnt try to win.
‘Have an actual desire to hurt somebody”
LOL.. man I cant stop laughing.. Yeah. Jorge goes into the octagon to hug people.
Man.. some of you people are straight ignorant. Maybe if you watched more than 1 Gurgel fight than to actually hear about it.. then you would be more knowledgable.

Jorge can submite almost anybody anytime? He has had 75 minutes to submit the very bottom of the LW division in the UFC and he has failed to do so. Back in the TUF 2 days, I used to believe in Jorge’s BJJ, but I no longer do. Sure, he is a great instructor, but when it comes to applying BJJ to MMA, he just isn’t cutting it. Fighters like the Diaz brothers, BJ Penn, Carlos Condit, Miguel Torres all have BJJ skills that transfer right over to MMA. Getting cought in any of the above fighters’ guard, the fight will be finished in 3 seconds. Jorge on the bottom, and he gets his face punched in.
However, I must say that I will be rooting for Jorge in his next fight, as long as it isn’t against one of my favs.
Welcome to the WEC. what a boring fighter, if you can call him that. he always looks scared during the fights. if your not going to “fight” then just find a new job. the guy is not a fighter, he doesnt have what it takes to engage more. he should just stick to coaching other fighters.
ive always heard alot of hype about him and he always looks like a n00b. he gets in there and goes , ok, what do i do next? how bout you swing or atleast move foward anything but back-up and stand still.
dana please fire this guy. he’ll just be known as franklins lil boy who couldnt fight.

I have been agreeing with you on the exciting fights, he’s never been in a boring fight, I’m jumping up and down when he’s getting turned into hamburger meat, ala Alvin Robinson. Like I said earlier, I get excited knowing he’s going to take another beating!

What site you see that on?
So just because he doesn’t finish fights you write off a guy that has 3 wins in the UFC? I agree he is never going to be a legit contender but the man deserves some credit. A lot of guys who get to the UFC go 0-2 and we never hear from them again. I also admire the man’s heart, if anyone watched TUF you saw that he has no quit in him, and thats says a lot more than most MMA fighters. I would like to see Gurgel Vs. Matt Wiman to see if Wiman is more than a gatekeeper himself. Machida and Okami don’t finish their fights, but they get your respect. I’m just saying the guy has heart and he gets the W more often than not.
If Gurgel is so good one the ground why have I never seen any of his ufc fights end there. He’s almost worse than Andy Wang at sticking to a game plan. I don’t ever care to see him fight again in the ufc.

Does Jorge really walk around that heavy? I didn’t think he was, and actually, still don’t. During TUF 2 for WW’s, they kept on saying that Jorge was the smallest of all the fighter in the house, and that he was fighting above his natural weight class. I don’t even think that he needed to cut weight on TUF 2 to make the 170 lbs limit. If Jorge is walking around at 190, he is probably the largest LW in UFC history. Not even Sean Sherk is cutting 35 lbs for a fight.
