MMA Facts

Props: New York Times

Quoteworthy:

“On Monday, the company that owns the [UFC] will begin its public campaign to legalize so-called mixed martial arts fighting in [New York], 11 years after it was banned by Gov. George E. Pataki…. Zuffa, the company that acquired the championship in 2001, will unveil the Web site www.mmafacts.com on Monday to argue that it has transformed the sport into more legitimate, and corporate-sponsored, entertainment.”

The “Athletes” section is a bit over the top is you ask me, but otherwise this is a long overdue resource. And is Matt Lindland really featured on a Zuffa-owned Web site? Weird.

For some reason, the NY Times writer thinks that choke holds are not allowed in MMA.

“Among other things, no eye gouging, choke holds, hair pulling or below-the-belt shots are allowed”

Other than that I liked the article. Good luck to the UFC in making this happen! Madison Square Garden would be an amazing venue for a fight card.

Can you believe it? The politicians who refer to MMA as human cockfights and “not something our kids should emulate” have no problem cashing the $25K check Zuffa made as a donation. Sad state of the world that Zuffa felt it had to pay that money anyway. Christ, those bastards are dirtier and more money-grubbing/opportunistic than Gary Shaw.

The MMAFacts website is great as a lobbying/ P.R. tool. I liked the athletes section. It attempts to diffuse the thuggish appearance of many fighters. While MMA fans know that having a mohawk, purple hair or being covered in tattoos doesn’t mean you’re a bad guy, a legislator’s first impression may be dramatically different.

Pretty decent site for the purpose that it was designed for. Since I’m from CT and seeing that the last UFC at Mohegan Sun, UFC 55 Arlovski vs Buentello, was like two and a half years ago. Then the Tri-State area got treated with the classic UFC 78 Bisping vs Evans. If the UFC does get MMA sanctioned in New York and they put on the show, I REALLY hope that they don’t plan on having the main event be Tim Sylvia vs Eddie Sanchez. At the declining rate of tri-state area main events, that really isn’t that big of a stretch. However, luckily, I have a fealing that if the UFC was to put on an event at MSG, that it would be a HUGE main event. Either that, or it would be Chuck Liddell vs a Wrestler. But then again, Chuck only like to fight in Las Vegas, but he is having to fight in England soon.

The UFC used to hold TONS of event in CT and NJ. I would always have the opportunity to see the events live. Mohegan sun played host to UFC’s 35, 39, and 45. New Jersey hosted UFC’s 28, 31, 32, 41, 50, and 53. So counting the previously mentioned UFC’s 55 and 78, the UFC has been in CT/NJ 11 times. Between UFC’s 28 and 55 (a span of 27 PPV’s), the UFC was here TEN times. Since then, UFC 56 - 85 (a span of 29 PPV’s), the UFC has only been here once, Bisping/Evans.

Its already Tuesday, and no one is even taking about the Lightweight Grand prix that starts Saturday! You guys do realize that JZ is fighting Akoi right? That is a high quality lightweight mma match, and that isn’t the only interesting fight.

Anyword on if DREAM will make this event available on pay per view in America?

Since DREAMS in basically the new HERO”S, and they are both K-1, can anyone tell me if Hero’s used to be available on pay per view in the UFC? I know the Hero’s shows that took place in the USA were avaliable on pay per view, but were the Hero’s shows that took place in Japan avalable on USA pay per view?

VM..I recall NJ/CT and Louisiana..Alamaba..the South had alot of UFC events before Zuffa took the wheel. Frank vs Tito I think was in the South. Nowadays it’s England/Vegas/Ohio Cali here and there..The Tri State and the South have not been been getting UFC’s.

MMA is exploding as a sport all over the world. MMA is a sport that allows us to see fighters representing countries all over the world (kind of like Soccer, to a much lessor degree). I think that the UFC should start signing fighters from other countries instead of the classic American vs. Brazilian match up that has been taking place since UFC 1. The UFC is starting to expand ethnically:

UFC ethnic breakdown:
USA: has the most fighters in the UFC
Brazilians: have the 2nd most fighters
Italy: has 1 fighter (Sakara)
Canadians: Also have a nice amount of fighters in the UFC
Japan: Handful of fighters in UFC
Mexico: Handful of fighters in the UFC
England: Has a few fighters in the UFC
Croatia: Had crocop, but now they got a new 23 year old in UFC
Belarussia: Arlovski
Armenians: Karo, Manny…is Roman Mitchyan Armenian?

But why no Russian fighters in the UFC? Chelangov may be Russian but I am not sure, he could be Belarussian, then again I dont even know if he still fights in the UFC.

Fedor’s New Interview (Fedor discusses UFC, Dana White, BJ Penn, Josh Barnett etc)
Publish date: March, 11, 2008

Fedor discusses UFC, Dana White, combat sambo, BJ Penn, Josh Barnett, Rickson Gracie and number of other topics.

The number one question everyone is wondering, why didn’t you sign with the UFC? Fedor: We didn’t sign the contract there because we were offered a one-sided contract on unacceptable conditions.

You stated Mirko was your toughest fight in Pride, why? And would you give Mirko a rematch? Fedor: I don’t think Mirko was the strongest fighter. I just say he was of the toughest. There were los of top fighters in Pride: Barnett, Nogueira, Alexander, Sergei Kharitonov, Werdum, Igor Vovchanchyn. As for Mirko, he fell on evil times and it’s a big question if he personally wants a rematch now.

A lot of people train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a base. You train Sambo as your base. What is your opinion of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? Fedor: I think highly of BJJ. But I see some disadvantages as well. Jiu Jitsu is a rather good Martial Art base. But one need to guide newcomers at the very beginning in order to avoid and eliminate the future mistakes. I can’t say combat sambo or bjj have more or less advantage in case of transition to MMA. If people get involved in it, it’s only for their good. Moreover it helps popularize the sport itself. For me, personally, combat sambo is the native sport ans this is the reason I believe sambo is more versatile, dynamic, free and less monotonous.

Both you and BJ Penn are looked at by many to be the top pound for pound fighters in the world. What do you think of BJ Penn? Fedor: I like him as fighter. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen too many of his fights. I follow his career by checking the ratings though.

Who are you interested in fighting? Fedor: I’m interested in many of them, top ten for sure. I can’t say I watch all their bouts but I’m informed of every result of the fights they take part in. I watch the fights I’m interested the most though.

What do you think of fighting Josh Barnett? What do you think of him as a fighter? Fedor: Barnett is a good fighter. We are good friends with him. We always chat when we see each other. If we don’t meet up we mail with each other. I’m aware of the fact such bout is planned but I haven’t been told anything about it as of yet.

What’s your secret to staying so calm in the ring? What kind of mental training do you do? Fedor: That’s no secret. I’m calm by nature. I just do my job.

What’s your motivation now? Fedor: I want to win, stay involved in what I like the most. I want to bring in a worthy Russian fighter as a future substitute for me. I want Russian banner to be placed in the first lines of the magazines regardless their bias. We have a lot of young guns who will, hopefully, show themselves in the coming 2-3 years. They are still young, a bit raw, but possess tons of energy, aspiration and motivation.

Have you considered moving to the US? Fedor: Here is my fatherland, all my near relations and family live in Russia. It has no sense to leave the place I’ve lived my whole life.

What do you think of Dana White? This person talks a lot, sometimes rashly without having thought before.

Who is in your opinion the greatest fighter ever? And who do you look up to? Fedor: I don’t consider whether the fighter is great or not. Few fighters stand on the front lines though: Randy Couture, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Tim Sylvia, Josh Barnett in a random order. I respect them all. It’s very unpleasant though when your read someone’s interview in which he speaks badly of me. I have never been disrespectful to any of them.

How do you think a fight between you and Rickson Gracie would go? Fedor: This fight is a no go. Rickson wouldn’t take part in it.

Who is your next opponent? Fedor: My next bout will be organized in the USA. I can’t say anything about my opponent at the moment.

Do u really believe that buddy? Fedor’s camp may have not liked the match up, just like Liddell’s camp was entitled to not like the match up against Machida, but I am sure it didnt go further than that. I actually think that Fedor would have the easiest time against Sylvia out of the list of fighters that he mentioned.

If Fedor does sign with the UFC, I fully expect him to beat down Sylvia within the 1st year of his UFC career.

I can’t say anything about my opponent at the moment.

thanks for the update john. but it seems like the same old stuff. i wonder who did this interview? he didnt ask to many tough or indetail questions. i hope when fedor said that he only knew b.j. from the ratings, they werent mmaweekly’s. i agree that fedor never talks trash about other fighters, but dosent seem to know alot about them, just what he reads. i dont blame for not moving, he’s a star in russia. i would have like to have seen the interviewer ask him about his thoughts on all the skeptisism on his recent lack of quality opponenets and lenghty inactivity at times. he said the ufc’s contract was one-sided but didnt mention m1’s contract and their difficulties. maybee he couldnt. i still think fedor needs to be a little more open. i wonder if he and dana have ever met and talked face to face or if it was just his managers?

If this site is being run by zuffa, why are the people in the “the fans” picture wearing IFL jerseys?

I was just reading some threads on other mma sites and it was talking about the lack of Russian fighters in the UFC.

UFC ethnic breakdown:
USA: has the most fighters in the UFC
Brazilians: have the 2nd most fighters
Italy: has 1 fighter (Sakara)
Canadians: Also have a nice amount of fighters in the UFC
Japan: Handful of fighters in UFC
Mexico: Handful of fighters in the UFC
England: Has a few fighters in the UFC
Croatia: Had crocop, but now they got a new 23 year old in UFC
Belarussia: Arlovski
Armenians: Karo, Manny…is Roman Mitchyan Armenian?
You may be a bit confused by the meaning of the term ethnicity.

Anyway, Australia now has a fighter at heavyweight and Germany has Denis SIvers. Holland has Hardonk, Denmark has Kampmann, Sweden has two fighters as well. The first Korean fighter is debuting as well.

B.W: I agree with everythiong you said. Fedor does restate the same things in a lot of his interviews. Good to hear that he has plans on fighting Barnett and that they are friends. Also, I am pretty sure Fedor and Dana have never spoke face to face. Fedor was in Vegas but his management handles the negotiations and I dont believe that Fedor was present.

I wouldnt leave my home country where I am a god, either. Especially to come to the USA, where they will be you if you stand still for 10 seconds.

Fedor showing respect to Tim Sylvia. Has it ever been clarified 100% that Fedor and his camp said a while back that they would not want to have to fight Tim Sylvia. I didn’t believe it at first, but then I did, then I didnt, but now I believe it again. Fedor saying that Timmy is Top 5 may be further proof.

I didn’t say that I thought that Timmy can beat Fedor, did I? If so, then that’s not what I meant. For some reason, at some point in time, Fedor’s camp did not think that matching up God against Timmy would be a good fight for Fedor. Other than that, I haven’t heard Fedor speak much on Tim.

Personally, I don’t think that Timmy would last 1 round…

Thats what I am talking about! The reality is that I really expect this fight to take place if the UFC manages to sign the Russian and I would look forward to it. The fight goes like this:

“Lets get it on” or whatever they are saying now that Big John is gone.

Tim is scared to death, he throws out a lazy jab, Fedor closes the distance, Body Lock, Fedor uses his world class hips to manuever Tim down to the ground. Fedor then pushes Tim up against the cage and unleashes the nasties ground n Pound ever seen in mma. Just imagine him stuffing Tim against the cage and doing what he always does only this time with elbows incorporated…. Thats a scary thought and I dont think Tim Sylvia would stand a chance at getting past the 1st round! Stylistically, Fedor is a nightmare for Tim, not vice versa as reports have stated.

Remember how stupid Tim looked after the 25 minute beating that Randy gave him, when his 1 eye was all purple and his other cheek bone had a big mouse? Just imagine what he would look like after 1 round with Fedor, thats really scary.

If the UFC wants to introduce Fedor to the mainstream crowd that doesn’t know about him, match him up with Sylvia for his 1st fight and after Sylvia gets demolished, promoting a Fedor fight will be easier than a promoting a Liddell fight in Vegas!

On the Fedor GnP:

I actually don’t see Fedor being much more dangerous then he was in Pride, I mean don’t get me wrong, he is crazy dangerous with the GnP, but I don’t see him making much use of the elbows, since he has never gotten to use them before.
I think stylistically he just wont be used to it, and he hasnt had much practice at using them really.
Anyway, just a thought, could be wrong.
