paulo filho
The rematch between undefeated WEC middleweight kingpin Paulo Filho and Chael Sonnen has been postponed to June 1 in Sacramento, Calif., according to the Brazilian MMA Web site Tatame.com.

However, the reason for the postponement is a bit puzzling. The movement of the rematch was apparently requested by Filho. Though no official reason has been cited, it appears per Filho’s comments that one possible motive maybe his own mental health.

Here’s a snip:

“I wasn’t on a good moment, had depression but I’m rising now and the Americans forced me to fight now. I’m not afraid of winning or losing, but I wasn’t motivated to train, wasn’t training well, so I decided to do what the contract says and transferred the fight to June.”

Filho vs. Sonnen was originally scheduled as the headlining bout of the March event. Now, the featured bout appears to be the WEC light heavyweight title matchup between champion Doug “The Rhino” Marshall and Brian Stann.

Also rumored to be on the March bill is a fight of former welterweight challengers between Brock Larson and John Alessio, as well as Tim McKenzie vs. Steve Cantwell and Marcus Hicks vs. Ed Ratcliff.

Though no fights have been officially announced for the June 1 card it is expected that WEC Featherweight Champion, Urijah Faber, will put his 145-pound belt on the line in front of his hometown crowd against his biggest challenger to date, former UFC lightweight titlist Jens “Little Evil” Pulver.

The Faber vs. Pulver bout looks to be the most hyped fight in WEC history so adding the Filho vs. Sonnen fight to the card will make the June event the biggest WEC bill yet.

I think he has an obsession with Joey Lawrence…maybe he saw his music video and that’s causing the depression.

he got the shirt from a japanese fan and has said it gave him luck. he says he doesn’t know what to do once the shirt becomes to old to wear anymore, but he says he’ll keep on wearing it to the ring until it’s all ripped due to aging.

Sometimes there is major depression when on ‘roids. Your not as strong or athletic as u were when on the juice. Steroid users change so quickly and drasticlly that they get obsessed wit getting bigger or in better shape.

So when ur done wit ur cycle, ur gains are just now staying the same, or ur getting weaker.

so it messes wit ur head, and could cause depression.

I second that, ppl throw in the “steroid” word so often now, it’s like all athletes that came from pride with the exception of the americans (except josh barnett) were automatically on the juice, even though no one proved it yet. He does come off as sounding like a baby but perhaps the WEC didn’t give him enough time to prepare. I think the title fight was only announced during WEC32 which gives only about 5-6 weeks to prepare. Given he’s having other “problems” that might not have been enough time.

Guys, the brain is an organ like any other and as such it has functions. If one of the functions of his brain isn’t working 100%, then give him some slack. If his pancreas or heart had problems, you’d likely not ‘blame’ him.

too many people today still ‘blame’ people who have mental conditions/concerns. Would you ‘blame’ a person who has diabetes?

First Nissen Osterneck gets injured and is out for eight months, and now because Filho is took depressed to fight, that fight won’t happen until June. I swear, there were three fights that I was looking forward to more than others, and now only one is left. If something happens to Marshall or Stann, I’m not even going to bother tuning into this fight card.

Filho is not far away from his first loss. He’s got himself convinced that 185 is a horrible weight for him, although there are many fighters who routinely cut more for fights than Filho does. Doesn’t help that Filho’s dad is a pushy egomaniac (ultimate dad-from-hell pushing his son to do what he never could).

Sonnen may be in his head; but even if he gets past Sonnen, Filho is going to lose a fight very soon.

Linx: I completely agree. ACL injury is one of the worst injuries in all sports! I dont want to see Shogun fight again, like he did against Forrest. Truth b told, Shogun should have withdrew from the Forrest fight as well, but I think he was too hype about making his UFC debut. Shogun is young, he should take all the time he needs to completly heal is injury.
I hope he doewsnt come back until he is 100%. Shogun taking the Forrest fight when he shouldnt have screwed up the Light Heavyweight divisions title picture because Forrest won the fight against a 1 legged Shogun and that justified the UFC giving him a title sot against Rampage which Forrest clearly does not deserve!

since when is depression grounds to put off a fight. matt serra had a back injury, shogun tore his acl (NFL players would miss at least a year with a torn acl). depression is a copout for someone who just doesn’t wanna face reality or someone who is just so WEAK minded they are looking for any excuse to pity themselves. Filho needs to man up and fight or be made to relinquesh his belt. Depression is a joke, it’s just a term people use to get xanax’s and other feel good scripts

clinical depressing, especially when associated with other disorders such as bipolar is some serious shit. if you’ve never experienced it, you have no room to talk and should just shut up. you all act like it isn’t isn’t serious, and you can just “snap out of it” but that isn’t the case, far from it. your own mind is the one prison that can hold anyone and being trapped in it sucks. i wish him all the best and hope he can overcome it.

I believe UFC.com had an article on Fihlo before his last WEC fight. It talked about the shirt. I don’t remember exactly, but I think Paulo was wearing that when he was in a serious car accident. He thought he was lucky not to die in the accident and so it became his lucky shirt and now wears it to the ring/cage before each fight. (I will check to see if it is archived for exact details.)

Comment by PJJ
2008-03-07 08:35:54

That was easier to find than I thought. The rationale behind the shirt…

From the Tom Gerbasi article “Paulo Filho’s World Domination Tour”:

Like Quinton “Rampage’ Jackson’s chain, Chuck Liddell’s Mohawk, or Tito Ortiz’ bleached hair, Paulo Filho has a calling card that makes him instantly recognizable to mixed martial arts fans around the world — his sleeveless checkered shirt. But for the WEC Middleweight Champion, this is more than just a fashion statement.

“I bought this shirt in Japan,” explained Filho through manager / translator Ed Soares. “It was long sleeve but it wouldn’t fit around my arms, so I had to cut it. I’ve gotten in three really bad car accidents and the shirt was with me; when my father was run over by a car and was feeling cold, I covered him with this shirt. It’s been with me through some rough times, and to me it symbolizes that I can get through those times. I feel really good when I’m wearing it, that’s why I like walking into a fight with it.”

Well, with Filho rampaging to 15 straight wins without a loss and recognition as one of the best middleweights on the planet, maybe his opponents need that shirt to make them feel better about the rough times they’re about to face when the bell rings.

Look for my boy Bryan “The Beast” Baker to be fighting Sonnen at WEC 33 in place of Paulo Filho. He was originally booked to fight up and coming Nissen Osterneck but Nissen injured his shoulder, then they scheduled him to fight Logan Clark, but after they announced Filho wouldnt be fighting they gave Bryan a call and asked him if he would like to fight Sonnen instead. A big risk with only 12 days until the fight but hes up for it, so wtch him on the VERSUS channel, should be a good fight. B$
