EliteXC’s deal with CBS with the first story on PTI yesterday. I thought they’d mention it, but I didn’t think it would be the top story.

The deal was also discussed on Around the Horn. It was the topic after the first elimination. Jay Mariotti is not a fan…

I don’t watch much boxing but aside from elbows on the ground I really don’t see how it’s more brutal than MMA.

They’re both still a fight, just with different rules. I guess maybe the lack of a count when someone gets knocked down creates the perception that it’s more brutal.

I would give anything if both of these guys got a leg kick from Forest. I wish that UFC could be the organization getting CBS airtime. Elite XC is not a good representation of MMA, especially Kimo dirty Slice.

I think you heard wrong my friend, they said MMA is more brutal than boxing.

MMA has more potential for blood or a broken arm, but if you’re considering brain damage over a career; boxing is much worse for your body.

It’s one thing for your average person to be ignorant about mma. It’s another thing for these two though. Their job is to be knowledgeable in all areas of sports. They obviously have done little to none research about mma.

MMA may look more brutal to the avagerage person. The fact is though that it is much safer than boxing. People die in boxing all the time. Since MMA began in 1993 there has only been one death. Boxing has has FIVE DEATH IN LAS VEGAS ALONE since that time.

I couldnt hear it, but its seems you guys didnt like what they said? Those guys find anything to bitch about though, so I dont care too much about what they have to say…they change their minds about players and teams every week. And yoububg I agree with you there, but ufc will still get more ratings on spike i bet, but i do think that if other people just stumble across elitexc and base their opinion of mma off of that show, then they arent doing mma justice in my opinion

That’s what I’m concerned about. Hopefully EliteXC will keep Kimbo on the PPVs. We’ll see what kind of deal the UFC can work out. I’m convinced that the UFC is going to get a TV deal soon. Hopefully it’s sooner rather then later.

These old guys mentally shutdown whenever mma is brought up. I’ve heard them rail on mma in one sentence and in the next admit they don’t know who randy couture is. you don’t see punch drunk ex-mma fighters. you don’t see as many deaths in mma compared to boxing. most fights are stopped by a submission hold. it is just stubborn ignorance that keeps these old guys’ opinions together. unfortunately, kimbo slice will be the first national representative of the sport. he belongs in a tough man competition and not mma. clay guida or frankie edgar would impress the public and not incite the “experts.”

Maybe for a fair and balanced discussion on the subject they could have involved somebody under the age of 50, preferably in their 20s. I just don’t understand how they can say boxing is a sport, kickboxing is a sport, wrestling is a sport, judo is a sport and jiu jitsu is a sport, but something that combines elements of all of them is barbarity.

With all of this major network exposure and the realization of MMA as a “true” sport (by the general public, of course) we’re only going to see more and more ignorant and biased opinions from major sports media outlets.

Up until this point, I think everyone has relied on MMA news from fansites and MMA-related websites. I watch ESPN to see if the Knicks won… not to see who won the latest welterweight match-up. It’s going to be a huge adjustment for the sport and we’re going to be hearing a lot more biased opinions and commentary from the “experts.”

I would like to see the major sports news networks bring in personnel who are well versed in maritial arts, who can accurately depict the nature of the sport, and who are well edjucated in that style of competition. Surely ESPN has someone on their payroll capable of tackling the job… maybe they should ask some of the younger guys working in the mail room. :o )

Right now, in my opinion, aside from the fighters and management no one knows more about MMA than the fans, and it’s going to be difficult for these professional sportscasters to provide an accurate representation of the sport.

What a couple of girls. “I don’t get it”, “its too violent”. Tony K. is a digrace. He ruins every MNF with his idiotic takes and his constant whining. I do however like the exposure for MMA. Good or bad its generally good for the sport and the more they talk about it the more people know about it.

I really hope they show Kimbo pummel another can into the ground. I wonder if they’ll be able to show Gina Carano fight as she’s works for NBC right now.

Why dont they go ask Ali, or Hearns if boxing is more brutal than MMA or the handfull of boxers whos lives ended in the ring. But they cant because you cant understand what the hell ali and hearns are saying because the repeated blows they endured to the head.

i think for the time being that mma is seperate from mainstream sports, this is the tip of the iceberg, believe me in 1-2 years these guys will know what they are talking about, it would be like expecting them to know a lot about professional fishing. Can you name a professional fisherman? i can’t… ok i lied i remember roland martin only cuz i had a reel with his name on it as a kid….PTI is a good show but i agree with tony being a little too opioninated on MNF.

As a sportswriter, that hurts me. I respect these guys a great deal and I think they are two of the best voices (in terms of knowledge and opinion) in the sporting landscape. I think their show is the best analytical sports show on TV. Having said that, sure they are ignorant in regards to MMA. They are honest though, and you can’t blame them for that. They watch it with their 50-60 yr old minds and experience and see something completely different from what us 20 yr olds see. Quit condemning them for having an opinion.

I agree though, hopefully the ESPN hosts/analysts etc. and other sportswriters like Mariotti and Woody Paige and Skip Bayless (God I hate him) who talk about sports on air will enlighten themselves better about the sport of MMA.

I, too, spent several years as a sportswriter. Over the course of four years with my newspaper I had to become educated on sports like cross country, hockey, half a dozen rodeo events, volleyball and a few others that I had never been exposed to in any depth. The problem with Wilbon, Kornheiser, Mariotti, Paige, etc. is that they are universally condemning MMA without actually watching it or talking to people actively involved in it. They have an obligation to everyone who reads their articles, drivel in many cases, or listens to them bloviate on TV to present accurate and informed opinions, not spout the outdated rhetoric of John McCain from the early 90s.

More idiocy from Tony Kornhole and Willboner.

Kornhole: This stuff is so violent and so brutal. This stuff can be so savage.

Willboner: (in a little faggot voice) …and does so successfully! I’m just a little surprised … but, you know, people like brutality.

These two only agree on the things they know nothing about.

Either way, this story LED off the show. That’s huge publicity for MMA. I’m sure Dana’s kicking himself for not getting that deal done. If you want to be the premier organization in the U.S. (which they currently are.. for now.) You need to expand the brand. Spike TV isn’t enough. This isn’t the WWE.

Stop being so stubborn. The best fighters in the world should be fighting on network TV. Not fucking Kimbo Slice. Give me a break.

God forbid the UFC lets actual professionals commentate on their matches; instead of Goldberg and the pothead.

It’s like the NFL turning down a lucrative TV deal and letting the Arena Football League take the spotlight.

Okay, I’m done. Shit.

I think that boxing has the exact same level of violence as MMA, its just done in differnet ways. This really just seems like a case of old people being scared of something new.
