Exciting welterweights Mike Swick (11-2) and Marcus Davis (14-3) will likely throw leather at UFC 85 in London, England, at the O2 Arena on Saturday, June 7, MMAmania.com learned earlier this afternoon.
Swick and Davis have competed on different seasons of the mixed martial arts reality series, The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), which airs on the SpikeTV network. And both fighters have achieved impressive results inside the Octagon since their respective seasons have wrapped.
In fact, Davis has reeled off 11 straight wins since his loss to Melvin Guillard via technical knockout (cut) back in 2005. He has won his last four contests, stopping each of those opponents with a mix of submissions and knockouts.
This will mark the fourth straight fight for the “Irish Hand Grenade” overseas — he most recently knocked out Jess Liaudin in the first round at UFC 80: “Rapid Fire” on January 19.
Swick will make his second appearance in the 170-pound division after racking up an impressive record at 185 pounds, winning five of six bouts in the UFC.
He’ll be out for redemption after a self-admitted less than thrilling performance against Josh Burkman in his welterweight debut at UFC Fight Night 12 in which he pulled out a lackluster majority decision.
Swick and Davis prefer to keep fights standing, but are both solid on the ground. This has all the makings of an up-and-down slugfest that could be show stealer.
And that’s saying a lot with the main event between 205-pound standouts, Chuck Liddell and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, penciled in to headline the show.

Damn what a great fight I can’t wait to see this one.
Mania, you are kidding.. right? Do me a favor and look at our blog site (you know what I am talking about) I wrote a piece yesterday stating that they need to make a Mike Swick vs. Marcus Davis bout!
This would be a great match-up. It’s been fun to see Davis evolve over the past couple of years and Swick has regressed a bit from the way his first couple of UFC fights had gone. I’d love to see this one.
Damn what a great fight I can’t wait to see this one.
Agreed, UFC’s been setting up some great fights lately
WOW…good slug-fest. swick better bring a better game than his last fight. BOMBS AWAY!!!
If Davis wins this fight, he should get a very big name in this weight division, than title fight? yes? no?
I think if he wins this, he becomes a number 2 contender.
this is gonna be a bang out cant wait to see this one
Go Davis like a b.
Mania, are you sure that Liddell/Shogun is the main event? I mean granted its a big time fight but I’d be surprised if they don’t have a title on the line here. The one that makes the most sense is Nog taking on Kongo (provided he wins) or Mir/AA if AA wins and is re-signed. Basically I just think that there has to be a title fight.
I think if Davis wins this he should fight Josh Koscheck… I think it would be an interesting fight.
If Swick wins he should fight Diego Sanchez (another AKA nemesis for him).
Should be a good fight all round. Davis is a big WW so Swick will need to beef up a bit for this.
It would be entertaining to either see Swick get knocked out for the 1st time in the ufc, or actually see the old swick knock davis out! I dont think Davis will let swick slide with another boring decision, not his style
4 words! “LETS GET IT ON!”
This should be a very interesting fight. Up until now, Swick has only faced fighters in the Octagon that he had better stand-up than. It’ll be interesting to see him fight a guy whose hands are at least as good as his. I wonder if he’ll try to test Davis’ ground game, or if he’ll bang it out with him. Either way it should be a very exciting fight. Davis will definitely have the crowd on his side, he has become a fan favorite in the UK.
I like this fight a lot.
even though i like the match up, i think davis shouldn’t take this fight. he is on a roll, kicking ass left and right and climbing up the ladder. swick just moved into the division and had a lacklsuter performance against burckman. basically, davis has nothing to win (i.e. he would still have to fight a top 5, i don’t think swick is even top 10 at this point) and a lot to loose in case he gets caught. just my 2 cents.
wordddddddddddd
I think Davis is still a very underrated fighter and with a win will bring him to the top of welterweight contenders. I’d like to see the winner face Parisyan.
Damn Mania your the man, you always come out with the good news first!!
good davis is fighting someone good. now if he wins he can talk. but i still don’t like him from his shonie carter fight he had him hurt and he lets him recover. i thought dana wanted finshers in the ufc. but don’t get me wrong davis is winning me back over but he needs more wins like his last one 2 get me 2 like him. but i say swick by a choke.
have you even seen his last 4 fights

I agree that he should get a big name, although some would say Swick is a big name. There’s no way he jumps to #2 with a win though. The line forms behind Fitch & Karo, pending the outcome of their fights. After that, there’s a whole bunch of guys who would have a problem with him jumping to #2.

I too can’t wait for this one. Nice work Joe!
Gonna be an awesome fight if Swick brings it this time.
This fight sounds awsome, to bad i like both these guys. Marcus by KO or desicion.
i want to see quick swick get knocked out
Damn what a great fight I can’t wait to see this one.
For sure
really good fight, someone is getting knocked out, i think swick will be the one
I like both these fighters and this is important for both of them more I think for swick then Davis. I have feeling Swick in the second round via ko.
i feel the only way swick can win is by swickatine,on the feet marcus davis should be able to ko him. the winner should get karo, fitch is higher ranked then karo because karo ducked the fight and plus i hate karo. WAR DAVIS!!!!!!!!!!
I think Swick will definitely come out swinging to make up for his last fight. I like Davis and all, but I think the reach advantage gives this one to Swick.

He dislocated his thumb in the first round. That’s why he didn’t finish Shonie. He has finished the last 4 guys, are you kidding?
Call me negative or whatever. This fight is a bud match up for either fighter. Swick could easily win this fight if he focus’ strickly on grappling. The only way I see Marcus winning this fight is if Mike tries to stand with Marcus. I see Marcus being more assertive but I see Swick catching Davis in the later part of round 1 or within the 2 minute mark of round 2 with either a choke or armbar.
Davis has the fight on the feet and when it hits the ground, he’s proven he can roll BJJ, and his base is boxing.
I can understand Marcus Davis getting Mike Swick based on numerous factors. Everyone who is anyone is already inked on to fight ….
GSP vs Serra
Fitch is booked
Koscheck is booked
Diego is booked
Hughes is waiting for Serra
So I can understand him taking the Swick fight. But Dana has to get him in there with one of the above mentioned, he has earned it.
I guess you can throw him a Josh Burkman or a Karo Parysian (after Alves beats him) but I think he has come along way and he does have the fan base.
Marcus Davis, KO.
Swick by Knockout!
This has the elements to be a great fight, let’s hope Swick brings his A game, that will be an awesome match. I like both,m they are really good, difficult to pick one right now.
Winner should fight Matt Hughes!
I think this is going to be a great fight from the get go. I think he was trying to just take it slow with burkman too. Until he realized he was out of time, but i guarantee Swick will put on a show, and I think Mike Swick by knockout maybe 1 round, or 2 round. I also think Marcus Davis is a really good fighter to who has improved himself. So if Davis doesn’t win this fight i think he still is a top welterweight contender. If Swick wins this fight i think he has damn well proved himself as a welterweight contender too. So both i think are going out guns blazing and it could be a fight of the century.
Go davis, knock out that skinny ass!!

I’d be happy with that as a Main event, just a shame it will be 3 rounds, so want to see it backed up with a stacked card. But I AM SO GETTIN SOME TICKETS!!!
Davis.. K.O. R1
I see swick not wanting to engage and Davis catchin him with a sweet hook. Swick hasn’t looked as up for it lately IMO and Davis is obviously used to fighting here now
…or maybe he’s just not as aggresive as he was, i don’t know.. ya know
Swick will look to take it down after about 20 seconds… he won’t stand with davis and if he does nighty night! davis by ko late rnd 1
4 words! “LETS GET IT ON!”
Good quote I miss that big bastard…. these new refs they have now suck….. Anyway,,,, Swick better train hard cause Davis is a beast and mister highlight reel…. Go Davis
Dana did promise us nothing but big fights in 2008….
I love Swick and Davis, but if this stays on the feet, Davis will need less hits to KO Swick than Swick needs…and Swicks wild swings will not phase a boxer like davis….this could be a quick fight!
The Hand-Grenade will explode quick on Swick
Its unfortunate somebody’s gotta lose. On the flipside, 1 of them will be considered one of the top 10 fighters in the division. I feel bad for Davis but Swick’s gotta the training partners, he can’t really lose.
I’m a fan of both fighters, but I’m a bigget Davis fan. I’m looking to see him win via KO.
Stylistically this is a wonderful match up. This is going to be one exciting fight. Some would like to see Davis fight someone better, but Swick is as good as it could get because as Kevin Kelly already pointed out…all the other top WW are already booked and wont be ready to fight by June 7.
I really hope Marcus beats Swick! That way he would definetly face a top dog next!
Swick should fight better then his last fight vs. Burkman. He wont have to worry about getting takendown constantly. I will be pulling for Marcus
even though i like the match up, i think davis shouldn’t take this fight. he is on a roll, kicking ass left and right and climbing up the ladder. swick just moved into the division and had a lacklsuter performance against burckman. basically, davis has nothing to win (i.e. he would still have to fight a top 5, i don’t think swick is even top 10 at this point) and a lot to loose in case he gets caught. just my 2 cents.
I agree El Santo. But if you look at who Marcus Davis has been fighting, at least Mike Swick is the biggest NAME, however, not the most talented. Marcus has done more than enough to warrant a fight against a Top 5 talent. Mike Swick is no where near the Top 10 of the WW division. Josh Burkman is not even Top 20, so a boring decision win (that I think Burkman should have gotten the nod on) against him in the first of the division does NOT make you Top 10. The WW division is always loaded with talent. For example, two WW fithters not in the UFC, Jake Shields and Carlos Condit would both run right through Swick or Burkman. Either of them against Marcus Davis would be a fight. Davis has nothing to gain and everything to lose in this fight against Swick, unless he is promised a #1 contender fight with a win. But is that even possible? Fitch and Karo are already ahead of Davis in line for a title shot. I honestly think that assuming all 3 win, that Fitch should get the title shot, and then have Karo vs Davis to decide the next #1 contender.
Everyone is giving the standup advantage to Davis (as I am) but I think that Swick is going to have a pretty big reach advantage on Davis. Anyone got the measurements???

If Fitch, Karo and davis all win their next fight, I think giving the title shot to Fitch and have Karo vs. Davis as the next #1 contender fight is an excellent idea. Personally, I am not a fan of Swick at all, but he does have a lot of fans and this will be a big step up in the quality of opponent for Marcus Davis, so I really cant complain.
VM: How much of a reach advantage Swick has in this fight is a great question. I cant wait to see Swick raise his hand to the sky, like he always does, trying to show off….as soon as his hand goes up, I hope Davis Knocks his Block OFF!!!
I love both of these fighters, duno who to give the edge ta really, even if Swick finds his old self at this division this would be savage
Cause Marcus Davis can really give him a great fight, hopefully I’ll be going to this fight. UFC live shows are the best live events in the world, nofing else can compare in my opnion
I went to the Newcastle card, Rapid Fire, even though every one said the card wasn’t great, it had brilliant fights and lethal finishes, and I was cheering lyke a mad fing for Davis
Duno who to root for
Suppose the Irish hand grenade just cause of his nick-name

You have to root for Marcus. He is the most improved mixed martial artists of the past couple of years and he has given us nothing but exciting fights. While on the other hand Swick bored us to death in his fights against Okami and Burkman.
Also Davis is an older fighter who doesnt have to many years ahead of him, thats why I root so much for him now…..Swick has time!
sick fight
THAT PIC LOOKS LIKE SWICK HAS DAVIS’S ARM GRAFTED TO HIS RIGHT LEG.
It will be interesting to see if Swick sticks with instinct and tries to stand or if he takes advantage of all his great training partners and takes it to the ground. In my opinion, his game plan could be the difference. Great fight!
LOL at those who say Swick will KO Marcus Davis. Marcus has never been knocked out; Swick will not be the first to do it.
I like both fighters. Probably equally. Swick was not impressive in his WW debut. He didn’t look like he had much power. I believe Davis can overpower him despite the reach of swick.
I love this matchup. I was thinking about it just the other day. It seemed to make sense to me and the UFC see it that way to me. Thing is it nearly has to be Swick for Davis. Davis needs a name and Fitch wouldn’t realistically have to fight Davis at this stage, he’s long due a shot. Likewise for Karo. I was thinking then that they would probably throw Davis in with another TUFer, Sanchez, or one of the AKA boys. Mike is potentially the best matchup if he brings it. Swick fighting Davis pretty much means a standup war…I think.

After watching Swick’s last few fights, I don’t think he’ll be using his reach to his advantage. He hasn’t had the fire in his eyes since after the first round against Okami in his hometown. I agree that if Swick gets cocky he’s gonna get crushed. Marcus Davis is the man, and probalby the best boxing in the division. I see a late 1st or early 2nd round KO for my boy Marcus.

Lol you should be rooting for davis his dad is from waterford!
There are not many sure things in MMA except this fight which will end with swick KOed in the first rd
not because Davis is so much more talented than swick but becuase swicks confidence was shattered after losing to okami and this was confirmed in the burkman bout in the way he faught. Now he will be facing a guy who feels like hes invincible who is on a long winning streak and is coming off a sensational knock out in his last outing.

Good Post….u could end up being right
Beautiful just beautiful
The only way Swick can win, is by cut. Marcus has never been knocked out, and he’s been fighting for almost 20 years. And he’s too good on the ground now. He’s trained with some of the best. Much better than Swick.
If Swick tries to go blow for blow with Marcus he will be KO`d. If Swick takes it to the ground Marcus will submit him.
Marcus will desreve on of the big names after this fight.
Go IRISH HANDGRENADE. Happy St. Patricks day to all.
