ufc 84 wanderlei silva and keith jardine
Wanderlei Silva (31-8-1) has expressed his intentions of signing the bout agreement to fight Keith Jardine (13-3-1) at UFC 84 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday May 24.

The latest announcement comes via his personal blog, which has been translated in part thanks to MMAWeekly.com.

Here’s a snip:

“I’m leaving right now to sign the Jardine fight contract and you are the first ones to know officially. I am starting to train hard again to be able to get the victory.”

It’s a victory that the “Axe Murderer” perhaps needs more than any other in his career — he’s on a three-fight losing skid.

Granted there’s nothing wrong with losses to Mirko Cro, Dan Henderson and Chuck Liddell. But if he can’t beat Jardine it is going to derail any immediate aspirations he has to challenge the top contenders in the 205-pound division.

To help him prepare for the upcoming bout Silva will enlist the services of UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture and his army of dynamic trainers at the XTreme Couture gym in Las Vegas.

For his part, Jardine will continue to train in New Mexico with mastermind Greg Jackson and camp partners Rashad Evans, Nate Marquardt, Georges St. Pierre and others.

He is competing for this first time since his split-decision win over Chuck Liddell at UFC 76: “Knockout” back in September 2007.

With wins over Forrest Griffin, Liddell and possibly Silva, it’d be insane to not see Jardine challenge for the title his next time out, or at the very least fight the winner of Liddell and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in a number one contender eliminator match.

Let’s also remember two other important bouts within the division that are upcoming: Lyoto Machida vs. Tito Ortiz and Thiago Silva vs. Rashad Evans.

Things should be very interesting going forward in the light heavyweight category going forward. And the winner of this bout between Silva and Jardine will be in the thick of that mix.

It should be a good fight and interesting to see if Jardine can handle the pressure and aggressive style of Silva. He more than likely won’t have much room to unleash those punishing kicks, which are a big reason behind his success.

zuffa hates jardine, if wandy beats him jardine will be fighting on undercards until he signs with elitexc or someone else. Its not fair, but its true. I cant blame zuffa either. He is not marketable and has no fanbase.

I dont think Jardine will last 1 rd against a wanderlei training at extreme couture. He learned a lot about fighting in the UFC in his match vs. Chcuk. Wanderlei will blow right through Jardine, who I happen to be a big fan of as well.

How about having a winning streak longer than 1? I don’t understand people talking about how Jardine deserves a title shot now, when 2 fights ago he got destroyed by an unranked Houston Alexander. A fighter should never get a title shot in the UFC off a 1 fight winning streak (if you can call 1 fight a streak) unless they A) just lost their title after holding it a while, or B) are coming into the UFC with an impressive resume elsewhere. Even if he beats Silva (which I don’t think he will), he should still have to fight a #1 contender match with Liddell, if he beats Rua (while Machida fights the winner of Jackson vs. Griffin).

Wanderlei via KO/TKO first round, i expect Wanderlei to come in like he does when he has fought all his lesser opponents and just bullrush and KO Jardine. Jardine aint bad but he aint on Wanderlei’s lvl if Chuck had been aggressive he couldve KO’d Jardine.
Wanderlei vs Rampage coming up soon as well as Rua vs Thiago(unless they dont wanna fight each other, i think they will doh) Chuck rematch vs Jardine or he will fight Machida.

Wanderlei >jardine
Rua>Chuck
Rampage>Forrest
Thiago>Rashad
MAchida>tito

if this fight does happen jardine is going to take it. look none thought he would beat liddell or griffin. but he did then he fought houston and none thought houston would win but he did. so if most of u think silva will win that is when jardine is at his best. so u keep saying silva will win and he’ll lose. silva needs to drop 2 middleweight and take on the champ. silva vs silva or silva vs henderson 3. either way it would b a great fight.

agree 100% that jardines leg kicks are a huge part of his succcess, take away his ability to kick and he loses really his only strength because his striking and foot work is medeoker at best.

those punishing leg kicks is what allowed him to enjoy victory over lidell. Chuck wasnt even really checking the those kicks just pretty much absorbing them. Which basically took away his knockout power because of the damage to his lead leg.

I am pulling for Wanderlia, not just because i am a huge silva but also, Jardine has problems with guy that like to get on the inside and then maul there oppents kind of like how he got distroyed by Huston. Beside Jardine dosent have to punchin power to put silva out and if u dont have that power to at least keep him at bay wanderlia is just goin to run right though him.

so Silva break a leg,

Infact back both, a arm, and his back u need to win this one

Machida ahould have been fighting Jardine, and they should have given Wandi to Tito. I really belive the UFC are trying to knock Jardine out of title by putting against Silva. I have never seen anyone have such a huge massive win like Jardine did and then have then the UFC gave them fight somone who lost there last fight. They know that Silva is dangerous for Jardine, and more than capable of taking Jardine out. Chucks style is to counter punch and he likes to take time to pick his punches. This style was made for Jardine as it gives him plenty of time to set up his devastating leg kicks. I believed Jardine would beat Chuck. Silva is completely different, he will not give Jardine a chance to set up his kicks, he is reckless, wild and relentless and we saw how strong his chin was against Chuck. The UFC are hoping that Silva will get take Jardine out of the picture and this is the main reason that I am rooting for Jardine because it will piss off the UFC Dana if he wins. If all else fails for them they can maybe get rid of him for wearing a t shirt they are not happy with like they did with Matt Lindland. Wankers.

Rampage is a huge LHW fighter and wanderlei had no problems against him. A 3 inch size advantage isnt a very good reason to pick 1 fighter over another, IMO!!!

Jardine is only like 6′1

Agree with everything John. Jardine’s somewhat methodical stratagy only works from beyond the outside, like on Liddell, who’m Jardine couldnt really damage, Wandi is gonna be so inside it’s not even funny. Like someone already aluded to, his kicks and punches were rendered ineffective when Houstan rushed him, Wandi is gonna come at him very similarly.

This could potentially be fight of the night and a 3 round war similar to the chuck vs silva fight at 79. Both are tough dudes that bring it so looking forward to this one. UFC always feeds jardine to the wolves and he seems to do alright so It’s a toss up and could go either way but i’ll pick Jardine to pull off the win here.

if anybody (including keith) thinks jardine should get a title shot after ufc 76, you’re on crack. i honestly dont think tim sylvia should have been fighting for the title at 81 either. you need more than 1 win for a title shot, not even forrest really deserves the title shot over a guy like machida or thiago silva. babaloo had to get 10 wins in a row before he got his 2nd shot at the title against chuck.

and all you jardine fans, i got bad news: keith is goin down. no way he beats wandy. jardine beat chuck in the worst performance of liddells life, and wandy took a beating against the best chuck ive ever seen (and even knocked chuck down twice if i remember correctly). houston alexander kicked jardine’s ass in the clinch, and wandy’s clinch is 350% what alexanders is.

I still think jardine has a shot. Wandy has lost 3 fights in a row (albeit against top contenders), that’s got disturb your mindset, and when you do that you can make mistakes. Look how timid Liddell was against Jardine. Jardine came in with a plan, and execute it. He beat forrest and liddell (who are both top guys), give some credit where it’s due. If Jardine fought Alexander again, he’d win 4/5 times. The UFC tried to sacrifice Jardine to Liddell, but it didn’t happen. If he can win against Wandy, he should get a shot at the winner of Chuck vs Rua. Give the man some credit.

never ever will that happen. Wandy will kick his ass, because he has to, after that sad performance against Chuck. No knees, just one kick, no agressivity when Chuck was on the ground, he let him stand up, instead of kicking his ass and stomp him in the face incredible.

Chuck could beat him because chuck had reach and power, but what does jardine have. Takedowns, wont work, Wanderlei is great at getting up, clinch, DEFENETLY not with Wanderleis BJJ, standup, ummmmm yea, another no. Jardine took chuck on a bad night. I see a lot of posts like “no way Jardine will win” and “this will be an easy one for the axe murderer”. It’s cool to voice opinions but it’s also fair to give credit if they don’t hold true. If Keith holds his own and beats Silva, do the man a favor and throw some support his way. He has beaten some good names fair and square and if he adds Silva to that list he deserves a title shot.

Guys lets think about this. Jardine is going against a legend. A guy who DESTROYED Rampage TWICE. A man who was a pride champion for 5 years. Hes going against the Axe Murderer. Jardine beat Forrest, good for him, he did a good job. He beat Chuck on chucks worst performance and only by Split decision. Im sorry but Jardines walking into the hornets nest. When he steps into the octogon at UFC 84, theres gona be a hurricane waiting, hes gona get destroyed and lost fighting it.

Saying “Keith beat Chuck because Chuck had a bad day” is as invalid as saying “Alexander beat Keith because Keith had a bad day”. The truth is we don’t know. It is what it is. I mean, how can a man ever get any credit if when he wins it’s perceived as luck and when he looses it’s perceived as opponent’s skill? If the man beats Silva he deserves a title shot. If he looses, he doesn’t…it’s as simple as that.
