LIVE blow-by-blow, round-by-round coverage of the main card:

Kimbo Slice vs. Tank Abbott

Round one: Tank Abbott makes his way toward the cage and it’s deafening. No one in this building wants him to win. The EliteXC team is even passing out candy grills to all the fans. It’s madness. Everyone is on their feet, waiting for the Miami-bred Kimbo Slice to make his entrance. Dear lord this is bedlam … here he comes. All this excitement and I’m skeptical that this match up lasts longer than 90 seconds. I’d hate to be a cop right now. Check that … I’d hate to be a cop if Kimbo loses. Here we go.

Tank grabs Kimbo. Pushes him up to the cage. Tank pushes out and lands a nice left hook. Kimbo fights back with a left hook of his own and Tank goes down. Kimbo tries to finish but lands a punch to the back of Tank’s head and the ref stops the action. Tank gets a second to get his wind back and they meet in the center of the cage. Both fighters connect on bombs, but Tank looks wobbly and Kimbo lands a big left hook then a straight right. Tank goes down and gets back up. Kimbo lands another huge right hand that floors Tank for good. Big knockout for Kimbo in front of his hometown fans.

Final result: Slice defeats Abbott via knockout in round one

-end-

Antonio Silva vs. Ricco Rodriguez

Round one: The former UFC heavyweight champion, Ricco Rodriguez, makes his way down the stage toward the cage. There’s some confusion behind the scenes and he’s not allowed in until the very last minute. Weird … hopefully this is no indication of how the fight will go. Fight time. Ding-ding.

The two touch gloves and circle one another to start the bout. Ricco swings and misses with an inside leg kick — not much action to start. Silva goes on the offensive and backs up Ricco with a few JABS. Ricco retaliates with a kick to the gut. Again, both fighters are tentative. Straight left jab from Silva backs up Ricco. Silva connects with a looping right that stuns Ricco, but the former champ manages to get a takedown and falls into the guard of Silva. Ricco is working from the top position but not much is happening. Elbow from Ricco finally lands. That’s how the round will end. Rather dull and a tough one to score.

Round two: Round two begins pretty much like the first — both fighters carefully looking for an angle. Silva catches Ricco with a right hand and Ricco counters with an errant Superman punch. Ricco goes for a single and has Silva mashed up against the fence. Silva escapes and Ricco falls to the ground, Silva punces on top of him with some punches. Ricco throws up a triangle, but Silva defends and gets side control. He’s laying down some nice elbows. Silva is back in full guard and is dropping some decent elbows, but Ricco is sustaining no real damage. There’s a cut on the left eye of Ricco. Silva is still working from the top position, until the ref stands them up. Ricco calls a timeout because he can’t see out of his eye. The ringside physician checks him and the two start up. Silva gets him down and maneuvers for an anaconda choke, but Ricco defends and the bell rings with Silva in full guard … pretty much where it was the entire second frame.

Round three: Round three begins and it looks like Ricco is aware that he needs this round. Let’s see if he can keep up the pace. Silva scores a big takedown and attempts to get side control. A fight breaks out in the stands. Silva pops up and drops some hammer fists while standing. Ricco is still on the ground … not doing much of anything. Silva drops some baby punches — both fighters look gassed. The ref stands them up again. Silva connects with a right and a kick to the ribs. Ricco throws a head kick and then goes for the single-leg takedown, which he gets. He’s no working from the top position in full guard. Again, both fighters are just laying around with no sense of urgency. Round three ends with Ricco still in Silva’s guard. Maybe he won that round, but overall, it was a rather lackluster fight … would have to give the edge to Silva.

Final result: Silva defeats Rodriguez via split decision

-end-

Scott Smith vs. Kyle Noke

Round one: Smith takes the center of the cage. Noke works a couple jabs. Smith has Noke backing up, but Noke is the only one throwing punches. Noke continues to work the jab with the occasional right hand. Inside leg kick from Noke. Smith misses an overhand right then a wild left hook. Finally an exchange. Smith lands a nice right hand and Noke fires back another jab. Smith gets Noke against the cage and connects on a left hook, but doesn’t follow it up. Noke continues to work the jab. A nice overhand right from Smith. Smith lands a nice one two combo and Noke pushes him off. Bell rings. Not much action in the round. I’d give it to Noke, he used the jab pretty good and Smith just didn’t do much.

Round two: Bell rings for round two and they meet in the center. Noke fires a couple jabs. Smith defends throws a huge overhand right that lays Noke out!! He’s out cold. That came out of no where. Big win for Smith.

Final result: Smith defeats Noke via knockout in round two

-end-

Yves Edwards vs. Edson Berto

Round one: Second fight of the main card up now. Let’s see if “Thug-jitsu” can make it three in a row against the super tough Berto.

Feeling each other out to starts. Berto with an inside right kick to the body … sounds like wood snapping. Edwards counters with a one-two that barely lands. Berto shoots in for the takedown, but Edwards does a great job of defending while sitting on his butt. Berto eventually muscles him to his back and attempts to gain side control. He sinks in a guillotine choke and Edwards is struggling to defend it. He pops out and works a kimura. Berto defends and the action dies down for a bit, but Edwards is still working for the submission hold. He eventually gives up on the kimura and the two are locked in a defensive battle on the ground. Edwards rains down some nice punches from the top position. BIG ELBOW from Edwards. Berto unloads with some hammer fists from the bottom and the ref has had enough. The two stand up and Berto goes for a takedown, has a single, Edwards pulls a Urijah Faber move and hops on one leg, delivering a knee to the grill of Berto. HE’S OUT! Vicious knockout. Great finish from Edwards.

Final result: Edwards defeats Berto via knockout (knee) in round one

-end-

James Thompson vs. Brett Rogers

Round one: First fight on the main card is up, and of course, James Thompson looks like a bad ass. Unfortunately, he doesn’t fight like one. Real interested to see if Brett Rogers can find that big knockout button on the chin in “Colossus” like so many other fighters before him. Time to find out … here we go.

The bell rings and Thompson sprints at Rogers. Shoots for the takedown. Rogers defends. Thompson takes him down. Rogers right back up. Thompson pushes Rogers up against the cage and connects a solid one two. Rogers pushes out of the clinch and throws two wild hooks, connecting on the second. Thompson gets him down again, but Rogers gets right back up. Big knee from Rogers out of the clinch!!! Thompson gets wobbly and Rogers goes in for the kill connecting on two huge punches, a left hook, then a right hook, Thompson starts to fall and Rogers connects on three more huge bombs. Thats it! Big knockout from Rogers! Impressive!

He found the button!

Final result: Rogers defeats Thompson via knockout in round one

-end-

Mario “The Big Hurt” Rinaldi vs. Dave “Pee Wee” Herman was perhaps the most bizarre first round ever. Rinaldi grabbed onto a single leg for about half the round, taking sever punishment while working for the takedown. Pee Wee just laid it on him while hopping on one foot. When the two separated, Pee Wee then landed about 4 devastating knees to the face, cutting open Rinaldi bad all over his face. He made a nice little comeback toward the end of the round but it was way too little way too late. Great round of action. Woke me up.

Feijao laid a beatdown on John Doyle. It’s probably no coincidence he has two UFC champions in his corner tonight, Big Nog and Anderson Silva. Impressive.

I just got done watching all the prelims. WOW!!! I didn’t see a “boring” fight yet. This is why it doesn’t matter who has the best fighters in the world. I could sit here and ramble off thousands of UFC matches that were “boring” to most people. It doesn’t matter. People like watching action and Gary Shaw knows this. This is how he makes money. Dana and Zuffa made a few tv shows and thats how they make their money.

I appoligize for defending both companies. Honestly I’m just tired of people, NOT ANY ONE PERSON, always bashing a person who becomes successful and is good at what they do. I enjoy ALL fights b/c to me, ‘its all or nothing’. People should be glad this sport is alive and well. Some should just enjoy the fact its somebody else and not them. I think this night is a MAJOR SUCCESS for Gary Shaw and EliteXC. This proves other companies will continue to compete w/ the UFC. If enough fighters get sick of Dana and Zuffa, they’ll be able to keep their jobs and feed their families while working for other outfits. This is all.

Kimbo may have skills but it’s time for a serious step up in talent to see.

This card was equivalent to an average UFC Fight Night. Antonia Silva couldn’t even clearly beat an overweight Ricco Rodriguez. Kimbo Slice beats a 42 year old severely out of shape Tank Abbot. No wonder EliteXC is in trouble. Mauro Rinallo is annoying to the extreme with his hyperbole.

Anyone who comments that this was a good card overall and true competition for the UFC either works for EliteXC or likes seeing UFC has beens fight no name guys. Or maybe they like silly miss-match fights where one fighter isn’t even in shape and has a losing record (e.g. Slice vs. Abbott). The Fertittas must be laughing.

this is terrible for the sport. I’m sorry but the EliteXC should be (i hate to say this word) ashamed, for this crap that they put on tonight. What a disaster. not just the Silvia/Rod fight, not just the kimbo/ tank fight, but also the commentating crew that surprisingly don’t even come close to being as good as the NON wwe Goldberg (and he’s terrible but so great at the same time because we get to hear Rogan correct him each fight). I’m sure there will be a few BoTards out there that will disagree with me and post up stupid this like you really care and pretend that your an mma expert. oh God we all enjoy this but stop trying to be a FCKING know it all. i get annoyed even looking at people REALLY getting pissed and over explaining everything. sure you know a lot, quit saying sht we already f-ing know. therefore i digress. Hell of a show?????????????? I couldn’t disagree more. BTW, no ones hating anyone. Competition is good in any walk of life. Unfortunately EliteXC is not providing it. EliteXC isn’t even as good as WEC. Furthermore, their not making any money (and their TV ratings are low). Fights like Slice vs. Abbott and Silva vs. an out of shape personal demond fighting Rodriguez make a mockery of the sport. There wasn’t one top notched fighter on the card. It’s like single A baseball compared to the Major Leagues.

the best parts of the kimbo fight were when he picked up his mouthpiece off the floor and threw it into the stands rather than put it back in his mouth… then when the ref had his hand around kimbo’s throat telling him not to hit the back of the head and kimbo looked like he was going to knockout the ref.

Clearly the fight was carefully picked for kimbo. An out of shape tank, fighting a fighter that has been training, FIRST with the Avellan Brothers at FFA(world class school), then with bas rutten. Kimbo is being groomed to build his record, then perhaps we all will see him fight someone that will give him trouble. Hats off to kimbo, but is time will come to feel defeat again. I agree that the fight card was very poorly put together. I just left the fight at UM and if anyone was there watching, the number of street thugs there were high, not good. Anyone that is in the fight game should know that EliteXC is, unfortunently, were some fighters go that should not be fighting anymore, washed up. I say put kimbo in with FEDOR EMELIANENKO. This will test kimbo’s chin & heart.

Listen, if you really watch and enjoy the sport, or no, let me rephrase, if you enjoy watching a fight then pretty much any time you see or hear about kimbo slice then of course your gonna get excited… Maybe in the hopes they finally pay someone enough money to make somethin happen and prove without a doubt kimbo isn’t as good as someones expectations. Or simply in the hopes of witnessing someones reaction getting their face cracked, put on they ass, or chocked the %&?! Out. Or even really interested in the progress a street hyped fighter makes through the ups and downs of making it to the top of the heap of most respected mma fighters. Right now its the downs gettin, washed up fight cards, but seriously, Mercer and abott are well respected worldwide. Just the beginning folks, give him some time, better yet the people around him enough time to get they pocket book skills to par and find him a wayto make somethin really happen. We can’t forget that UFC is the most repected, Better yet the biggest mixed martial arts monopoly to date, so really its about the biggest pocket book, which gathers the best fighters they can get their hands on. Believe me, training with bas you know he aint playin. 1

I have a hard time seeing why everyone is so up in arms about “how bad this fight card was.” You don’t understand that this kind of quality competition is the best thing for the sport.

2-3 months I think you will get your Antonio Silva/Kimbo Slice fight which i believe a healthy Silva will win fairly easily…I’m looking forward to Yves Edwards making a run at the lightweight title. Scott Smith has a gignatic heart and I think those cinderblocks he carries around on the end of his forearms can equate to some great ratings in the future for the promotion…also i can’t wait for Robbie Lawler to get healthy because I think he can really hurt some people

Beating some old boxer, a nobody and a has been, that was a nice warmer and so on, but now we need a REAL fight. You must be joking.
nope. just because these guys arent top ranked fighers or ufc fighters doesnt mean you have to hate on them they went out there and put on a hell of a show. and if you were a true mma fan and not just ufc fan you see it that way to
Hell of a show?????????????? I couldn’t disagree more. BTW, no ones hating anyone. Competition is good in any walk of life. Unfortunately EliteXC is not providing it. EliteXC isn’t even as good as WEC. Furthermore, their not making any money (and their TV ratings are low). Fights like Slice vs. Abbott and Silva vs. an out of shape personal demond fighting Rodriguez make a mockery of the sport. There wasn’t one top notched fighter on the card. It’s like single A baseball compa red to the Major Leagues.
ok there wasnt but the ufc needs these these smaller shows around because where else are they going to get figters wal mart and some of these non ranked fighters will be fighting for the the ufc belt .and ufc needs more heavyweight figters because there all leaving .so without these shows your just going to see ramatches in the ufc
i meant maybe fight for the belt one day oh and i didnt mean to be a dick i just had a little to much to drink and ricco is a loud mouth prick but every sport has one

Yes, lets put him up against another has been…I want to see him fight people with talent. Sto

This is so ridiculuos, I thought the same thing when I heard that. Kimbo vs. Ken “the worlds most dangerous man, unless Tito Ortiz is in the room, then its the worlds second most dangerous man” Shamrock. I think they should give Kimco the guy who had the first fight, Brett Rogers. He has a chin, throws, good hands, and has some decent dirty boxing skills…

That James Thompson has probably got the worst luck in mma history - he comes across very dangerous - BUT….

JUST CHECK OUT THE GLASS JAW STATUS OF THIS GUY -

Butterbean v James Thompson
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=mjep2b224Go - Actually stood with butterbean…and the rest is history lol.

James Thompson V Neil Grove
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=P3nB_wWnGDk - he gets humiliated cuz both of these guys were givin each other shit b4 this one.

Aleksander Emelianenko vs James Thompson
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=dG6bkoeJ88Y - hahaha, you dont charge at any Emelianenko and get away with it - what was he thinking?! where is the game plan!?

james-thompson-vs-brett-rogers (last night)
http://www.mmatko.com/james-thompson-vs-brett-rogers-fight-video-elitexc/
- this fight should mark the end of this guys mma career - surely he can see the picture now that he isnt going to ever be top 10 in any organisation - shame really.

Okay every body chill!!! I watched the fights last night and here is the break down.
1)Yves Edwards knee to the face was sick
2)Scott “Hands of Stone” whoops “Steel”, did what most should do after a first round bore fest - come out to kill - nice KO.
3)The last two heavy weight fights… a joke. Both were two pretty good young, strong, & in shape guys VS old & out of shape has beens.
4)Commentating: The worst - enough said!
5)Production by Showtime: Just like there boxing - sub pair.
6)The crowd:Out for blood. Booing all the time - that’s what made this show seem like a human cock fight. Before the last two fights (just from the fighters stand point) it was some good MMA, from some B level guys, that put on a good show.
BAM!

Is it Just me or is the Elite XC CORNEY as hell! I understand they have to be different from other fighting orginazitions but, come on. I’m not talking about the fights, which were pretty good by the way. I’m talking about the commentating, the dancing girls and Goldberg!(and Pitbull.. don’t want to forget him)

especially the commentator with the glasses. Hes always making the dumbest references!!! “he smoked him like a cuban cigar in little havanna” “he was hit and crash like the stock market in 1929″ and these were just a few :) Its terrible

Last night i had the opportunity to sit next to anderson silva and big nig at the fights. BOy what an experience all i have to say is i thought both of them would of been bigger, but anderson looked bigger than big nog i could believe it. The fights were great but sitting next to the champs made it unreal

You guys better know that WHILE you are discussing the bad sides of kimbo or whatever, he’s training to reach the level to fight with Krisis. I’m sure this fight will be the most exciting over these years. Krisis has a fighting style that ain’t no other has. Krisis fights different and he’s the guy better to not mess up with.
Its amazing to read/see “high brow” guys looking down their noses at a league (Elite)thats on the rise and what was a great night of entertainment. These were some GREAT fights and K.O’s, the same way you guys look down on ANYTHING thats not UFC is the same way HBO,and Boxing look down on MMA, so the next time “high brow” guys call the great sport of MMA human cockfighting and say it could never bring in the millions like boxing does remember how you looked down of Elite and dont get offended.
No one is “looking down” on anyone. Just calling it realistically and not caught up in the Gary Shaw hype machine. I’m surprised that the Abbott/Slice fight was even sanctioned. EliteXC is not that good - they have four or five godd fighters and that is it. If the UFC put on this card people would be talking about its imminent demise.

Great fights????

Kimbo Slice is without a doubt the best heavyweight in the world. Randy Coutoure, Fedor, and Big Nog are all wishing that he stays in EliteXC so that they never have to face him. He’s been destroying top notch fighters his whole life and now he’s finally showing how legit he really is. I guarentee you that within a year he’ll be ranked number one pound for pound by every mma site if he isn’t already.
Cantrell was just scared to death. I don’t think it was fixed. As far as Tank goes, you can’t fake falling on your face the way Tank did. I really would like to see Kimbo take on a guy with some grounds skills though. Personally I think he’d kill Shamrock at this stage of his career. Kimbo hits a whole lot harder than Tito.
Kimbo k.o’s Fedor in the first 40 seconds of the first round

it reminds me of when machida came in, everyone kept saying he was boring and would get owned. Heres to kimbo doing the same…yes he needs much more training to catch up to the rest but if you cant enjoy his fights then u r just to pretentious because his fights do remind me of those like tyson, wanderlei, fedor, huerta…always exciting no matter what!

EliteXC shows(most definitely the Kimbo&Tank kard) kompete wit the WEC shows!!! WEC only has Karlos Kondit& the lower divisions… All of which are weak as hell :( Kondit would get his lunch handed 2 him in the UFC!!!

I’d like to see Kimbo vs someone who can take a beating ……Like Nog, i doubt it will happen any time soon, and Kimbo still has a lot to prove, but if you put him against a guy that can get the shit kicked out of him and still win, we may see what he has for a ground game. I can safely say that there’s not going to be too many people out there that can stand after getting rocked by Kimbo. He has some of the heaviest hands I’ve ever seen in MMA.

Ever heard of Uriah Faber, Brian Stann, Paulo Filho or Jens Pulver? EliteXC is setting the sport backwards with headline fights like Slice/Abbott and an out of shape Rodriguez vs. Silva. EliteXC should sell their company to Cuban.

Very true. He hits Tank on the back of the head, and then gets all upset when the ref doesn’t let him continue to to fight like an idiot.
