Ricco Rodriguez Antonio Silva

“Win or lose, six months from now Antonio and I will be fighting again, probably for a title. We are the two best fighters in this organization right now. Tank and Kimbo are just tomato cans. We are the two real fighters.”

– Former UFC heavyweight champion and current EliteXC heavyweight, Ricco Rodriguez, has some choice words for the main event combatants this Saturday night at “Street Certified.” “Suave” feels that the fight between him and Antonio “Big Foot” Silva is the match up of premiere heavyweights in the division. Perhaps Ricco doesn’t realize that Kimbo isn’t really a can, he’s a lion:

I think Ricco, minus the Coke.. is a scarey thing for anyone fighting him. If that guy stays focused, his Jujitsu is amazing, and decent enough standup. If he gets Kimbo early in Kimbo’s career, I see Ricco taking him out pretty easily. 5-7 fights down the road, Kimbo has a shot.

But Im with Ricco, Tank is just another opponent for Kimbo to roll through.

Ricco needs to chill out and worry about Antonio. It’s a Brock Lesner situation. Kimbo sells the tickets so he gets the main stage. Its a business first, and a fighting organization second.

Agreed. MAYBE Kimbo has a future, maybe.

Tank on the otherhand?? The guy is not an MMA fighter. He was one of the faces of the old UFC. The UFC that wasn’t considered a sport. The UFC that was a joke. This is the new world of MMA where the fighters are athletes with TALENT.

This fight is nothing more then a glorified street fight. If I wanted to see a fight like this, I’d go down to the local dive bar. That’s all it is.

Yeah, I wouldn’t use Kimbo’s last fight as evidence of anything. The other guy took two punches to the shoulder before he was curled up on the ground tapping.

Say what you will about Kimbo but you can’t question the guy’s work. Teaming up with Bas only shows that he is serious and it’s the same grandeur that followed Mike Tyson through the early years….how quick and violent can this person be. That’s why most viewers watch. Most people don’t like the chess match of a great BJJ war so they have to promote these “streetfights” to get everyone to want to watch. I honestly hope he does progress in the sport to keep a dying heavyweight division interesting.

I really like Kimbo, but does it look to anyone else like the other guy threw the fight in that video? I know it’s been discussed at nauseum. Kimbo’s punches didn’t look like solid blows and the guy didn’t look too hurt when he got up after tapping. And don’t listen to Ricco Rodriguez, the guy runs his mouth and lies threw his teeth for fun. Just watch Celebrity Rehab and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Kimbo Who? Oh, yeah the youtube brawler who was owned by Sean Gannon. Do some homework, Kimbo got worked in that fight, and his last fight w/ Bo was also “worked” if you know what I mean. All Ricco is saying is that the proof is in the pudding.

Kimbo was not a MMA fighter at that point. And there was confusion about the rules during the fight. Kimbo has a lot to learn, but as others have said the ground game is not as important with the bigger guys. He needs a good sprawl and stamina.

Wait till Kimbo get’s decent talent to fights maybe someone 2-0 or 3-1 with a very good ground game and not afraid to take a punch. Tank Abbott is not what I consider a test but he will have a puncher’s chance and that’s all you need aganist an inexpierenced fighter.

Curiosity will cause me to take a peak at the kimbo vs. Tank fight, but the main reason I am watching this event is too see Antonio Silva.

Ricco is a tough guy, when in good condition, sober, with his head screwed on right. After all, he really beat Nogueira in PRIDE which was no easy thing to do. It was a shame that they robbed him of that fight and awarded the fight to Nogueira. I am not a fan of Ricco, but he deserved that win against Big Nog and he is a tough opponent at times. Hopefully he comes into this fight against bigFoot in top condition that way we can really see what Silva is made of.

As someone previously pointed out this is the same exact scenario as Brock Lesner’s presence taking over UFC 81. They hype up the Kimbo fight for the casual fans, but the die hard fans all know what the main event really is.

We should start a betting pool, we can all pick a 1 second of the fight, and we wait and see how many seconds into the fight Tank gasses and whoever had that second of the fight wins all the money. Since its my idea…I get 1st pick….I say Tank gasses at the 16th second of the 1st round!

Kimbo who? Good one! More people know who he is than Ricco “Sculpted Eye Brows” Rodriguez. I’ve done my homework. I’ve seen the fight and he wasn’t “Owned”. Sean Gannon hasn’t even been in the ring since Brandon Lee Hinkle smashed him. Kimbo isn’t the same fighter as he was back then. Ricco is just jealous that Kimbo has the main event. He pulls way more fans than Ricco…for sure! I like Ricco as a fighter. He has the talent & experience under his belt but there is no reason why he should be talking about a 1-0 fighter anyways. Kimbo has a ways to go before they should square up but he definitely has the potential.

I wish people would stop comparing apple to oranges.

Bo Cantrell took a dive and that was his highest profile fight yet, now he is fighting a 42 year old man who looks like SHIT.

If that is what you call an up and coming MMA fighter, then I guess we are in more trouble than we thought.

The greatest thing about that dive is he the first punch mianly hits the shoulder and he is tapping in the air as he come down. I hope he got paid realy well under the table to take that dive, that dude was a Marine. I come from a long family line of Marines and do not know one of them that would go down from a glancing shoulder punch or sell their manhood for the 10k he made on the books. So hopefully there was a bigger payday some where else….

Its not fair to even put Brock and Kimbo in the same sentence.
Frank Mir would beat Kimbo and all of his past opponents at the same time a day after his accident.Brock does have a chance of being a solid Hvwt. Kimbo couldnt beat a single person in the UFC on his best day.

I dont want to hate on Kimbo with out giving the man a chance. After all, I hear he works really hard with Bas. But there are so many questions sorounding him as an mma fighter. I have never even seen him Sprawl yet. Can he defend submissions? Can he get G n’P, then get up and come back and win. Can he wrestler? does he even have a G n’ P? All I know about him, is he is a tough guy, who isnt scared and can give hang with a lot of HW’s in the stand up part of a fight….other then that…who the hell knows?

Cantrell was terrified in that fight. It was over before it started. With that being said, I like Kimbo in this fight, But Tank can KO anyone at any time, at least until he gasses. Kimbo has potential, we will se how he does when he fights a real contender.

The president of EliteXC, Gary Shaw, has said time and time again that he ‘promotes’ his fighters, while the UFC let’s talent (like Brock Lesnar) lose and take away from their star power.

Translation = We either need to throw this guy Kimbo Slice some cans (ala Bo Cantrell) to raise his hype…or

LET’S FIX THESE FIGHTS.

Gary Shaw is a former boxing promoter that is trying to build an upstart MMA organization. Is there a reasonable doubt that EliteXC and other smaller promotions would be fixing their fights to make certain guys shine?

With all the crap the UFC gets with contracts, fighers feeling’s, and the such…The UFC has had major stars (CroCop, Hearing, Lesnar, etc) lose big and major superfights (CroCop vs Couture) go out the window for the integrity of the sport.

With that said. Kimbo with 1st round KO, while Tank Abbott recovers his wounds on a warm beach in Monaco.

In the words of the wise one Yoda- Watch, or not watch, there is no hate..

Meaning that while Kimbo has alot to prove, let him prove it. Of course his first couple opponents were not that good.Let him build himself up. Of course his fans are going to talk like he is Superman. Let them talk. I understand all of that but what I don’t understand is why all the negative talk about a 2-0 fighter that is really just in his feeling out stages. What is all the hate for. If I ever didn’t like or doubted someone it was for a reason. What is yours. If you just hate him for being popular then you are the definition of hater and in which case why watch his fights?

In the words of the wise one Yoda- Watch, or not watch, there is no hate..
