UFC 83: Matt Serra on the mental state of ‘Captain Canada’ Georges St. Pierre heading into rematch
By: MMAmania
Props: MMANews.com
Quoteworthy:
“Well after what happen the first time with him tapping out, I mean they called it a TKO, but he taped. I think now a lot of his attitude towards me has to do with his mental state. I think he needs me to be the bad guy. I mean whatever he’s got to do to get himself there is fine with me. I mean if he has to lie on the couch, and listen to his shrink to tell him to put Matt Hughes head on my body that’s cool. I definitely don’t hold him in the same light as Matt Hughes, but I think he’s got to put himself in the mindset that he doesn’t like me, and that’s cool. I got a lot of friends and family, so if he wants to be enemies it’s not the end of the world.”
UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra talks about his upcoming fight with Georges St. Pierre at UFC 83: “Serra vs. St. Pierre II” on April 19 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec. “The Terror” talks a lot about what goes into his fight preparation, as well as reaffirms that he is 100 percent healthy.

Whoops.
I’m pretty sure that you meant Matt Serra, not Matt Hughes at the end of the article. :X

Yes. Fixed. Apologies. Didn’t mean to scare anyone.
Serra’s gotta love that fuck up. he can’t get No Respect.

LOL good one, no way in hell.
Serra reads people really well, he must be an amazing poker player.
Just playin the devils advocate here. But everyone said that GSP was gonna dominate in the first match, as did I. Now, I’m not sayin Serra’s gonna win, but he doesn’t exactly have fist of feathers and anyone in this sport has a punchers chance. And I wouldn’t say that Serra’s weak and his BJJ ain’t that half bad either, so it might be interesting if this thing goes to the ground.
Listen to all you Canadians talking S… about Serra, let me tell you Serra is not Hughes, Serra ain’t scared of your Captain Canada, ok. But keep doing just that, like we say in the USA “keep talking that s…” I heard it a year ago, poor serra, I feel sorry for serra, blah blah, he already knocked him the f… out! Standing BRING IT! Ground BRING IT!

.. u prob guaranteed it the 1st time too, sucka
matt serra is gsp’s kryptonite…
long island will prevail
Well, hthe only fight Serra has any chance of winning is the pre fight talk. He has no chance, he is so out classed in every department it is unfair for him. But hes always got a punchers chance.

you can’t be serious????
i’d be surprised if this bout lasts 2 minutes…..Serra’s gotta be terrified inside, so what he’s doing a good job to hide it……GSP is going to end the fight early and wear the belt for a long long time……OH CANADA!!!

YOU’RE CRAZY MAN, JUST CRAZZZZZZZZZZZZY!!!!
It’s a sport, not a pep rally.
Agree, Lycan. After watcing his tko, jiu-jitsu videos, and TUF appearances, I have grown to respect Matt Serra, as a fighter. I can’t say the same for his personality, though, but that isn’t the point. Mma is a competition for respect, and I think he earned it………..
Having said that, GSP by ko or submission (can’t decide, he’s GSP is too well rounded!), round 2. LOL
Serra is such a typical ny prick, i hope GSP knocks his head clean off.
It was Serra that called GSP “Captain Canada” and I am sure there are almost as many fans of GSP that are “American” as there are “Canadians”. If there is anyone that is making this to be another Canada vs USA it would be the guys down south.
This is going to be a good fight. I got GSP winning it but it will be more competitive then GSP vs. HughesIII thats for sure. I think Serra will show that his striking is much improved and that his KO over GSP was no fluke. I dont expect him to KO GSP again, but I do think his striking is much better that what people give him credit for.

no way in hell? he already knocked him out once so he does have a chance.
GSP in 2
hahaha he got knocked out by fluke because he was totally unprepared for the fight and he even admitted that…..GSG is in the shape of his life and no one will touch him in the welterweight division for a long long time…..
Man i hope Serra cleans his clock again.
I don’t remember GSP saying anything that was that”’ disrespectful to MATT SERRA. I watched the last interview with them together, I guess GSP said something about himself not being prepared for the last fight and SERRA took it as GSP not giving him credit.
BIG DEAL’… I actually think SERRA is more likely the one that needs to not like his opponent. GSP is normally not like that.
just think of it this way. obviously a lot of haters for the long island boy , but if u look at it from just a fighters stand point.. there not that far off..
Gsp’s stand up is better but serra did khtfo. so u think it would 60% to 40% serra.. and
gsps ground game is better, but dont tell me matt cant submit him at all. we all kno serras nasty on the ground too. so i would go same percentage as the stand up.
so out of 200% serra has and 80% chance to win in my eyes.. so its not a def hes gunna lose, theres always a chance. i think serras wins in the 3rd round wit an omaplata.
holla.
That is seriously one of the oddest things Serra could have said. I think he knows well how much respect GSP and Matt Hughes have for each other. I dont think GSP has to hate anyone… But if GSP does hate Serra, things are gonna go dark even quicker.
WAR SERRA WAAAAARRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very much way in hell. Happened once. Score is one nothing serra. How could you be that confident in Pierre? Pierre fans better be at least a little nervous if they are realistic. I know I am.
it’s going to be strange if Matt Serra turns out to be the guy who has GSP’s number.
I don’t think that will happen, but i didn’t even buy their last fight because i was so sure GSP would win. There’s just no telling…
Well I’m not Canadian, I’m from Scotland… And GSP is gonna get his revenge on Serra…
GSP came into that first fight thinking believing he was going to destroy Serra with no effort and that he had nothing to prove… Now he’s coming into this fight with EVERYTHING to prove… On any given night Kos and Hughes would dominate Matt Serra, and we all saw what happened to them against the NEW and IMPROVED GSP that doesn’t take opponents lightly and trains with top MMA guys.
RUSH him!
Earlier, I read that m-1 has reached a deal with the new mma company “DREAM”. They will cross promote events together. So far they got cro cop, Fedor, Aleksander, Royce Gracie even said he plans on competing in Dreams. Could anyone tell me if Mark Hunt re-signed with K-1? If anyone has anymore news about the deal with M-1 and Dreams please let me know. Already there have been some rumblings of Fedor vs. Cro Cop part 2. Those 2 company’s working together will produce some pretty solid shows. Its a shame that world voictory road has signed a couple top fighters because if not, they would have signed with Dreams and we might have seen the closest thing to a PRIDE show as possible.
I need answers to the following questions:
Anyone know what rules Dream will fight under? Hopefully its the same exact rules as PRIDE.
Can anyone provide any more news on the deal between M-1 and Dream?
What company did Mark Hunt recently sign with?
Please help!

I was looking through different mma sites today trying to see if there were rumors of any interesting fights have been added to UFC 84 and UFC 85. What I found interesting was:
Internet speculation has pointed to Jardine vs. Wanderlei for weeks now. Today, I saw that this fight was taken off the UFC 84 fight card and now the fight card reads:
Wanderlei Silva vs. TBA
Keith Jardine vs. TBA
Can these 2 top fighters, who we all want to see face each other ,appear on the same card and not fight each other? Could Dana White really do this to us? All the top dogs at 205 are Booked. the only logical fight is wanderlei vs. Jardine. I hope this is just a viscious rumor because I dont want Jardine or wanderlei fighting anyone besides each other at UFC 84! If anyone has any knowledge to add on this subject please do so.
I feel that GSP will KO Serra. GSP is so good at all aspects of mma that he can pick and choose where the fight takes place and how he wants to finish it. Since Serra KO him badly last time, I have a feeling there will be no submissions or G n’ P out of GSP this time around. I have a feeling that GSP wants to pay Serra back with a standing highlight KO.
I think this fight will be much more competitive then GSP vs. Hughes 3 was….agreed?

is “keep talking that s…” an american saying? wow, you guys rock!! it’s really witty, too bad i’m a canadian and can’t say it. damn! can i say “keep talking that crap” about serra having a chance? let’s be serious; serra’s a second rate fighter and probably not even a top ten fighter in this division. he barely got through carter on tuf, he then won a decision over lytle (which to some was a controversial decision) and then he beat an underprepared gsp…and i totally dug the shot to the back of the head that started his onslaught. did you like it when lesnar got stood up???
it’ll be quick…and the belt will be back on the real champ - gsp

totaly unprepared he worked out and trained so how was he unprepared, the only thing he was unprepared for was the beating he took.
GSP will use his reach and pick him apart from the outside, if Serra tries to get into the pocket - he will be judo flipped ala Hughes and GnP’ed then triangled then armbared
No way in hell Serra has a chance…

You are right, he is so good at everything he can basically do whatever he wants. He likes to beat people at their own game. Look at what he did to Koscheck. What better way for him to beat Serra than a highlight KO.

ay ?
If you look at this fight with an open mind you have to think GSP will win. Hes got better stand up. Hes got better wrestling. Hes stronger. Matt Serra may have better BJJ but the only way this fight goes to the ground is because GSP takes it their. On their feet Serra has a chance as he proved last fight. Maybe GSP has a suspect chin(even though he did get hit behind the head first). If you look at all of this there is a small chance Serra will win but he can. Dont hate on the GSP fans because they think he will win. Most people do. Doesnt mean he will but he should.

i agree. i think gsp will be a little more defensive minded and tentative against serra than hughes. hughes has no power and serra has alot. i think this fight will go alot lot gsp/koscheck. gsp will put serra on his back and gnp his way to victory. i dont think serra will submit him, and since this is a 5 rnder ican see it going 4 rnds before gsp stops him. then i see serra beating hughes and hughes retiring. serra will probably drop down to 155 where he is most suited at his size and being one of the top guys to beat. i can see serra as the lw champ once b.j. moves up. i know this is alot of ifs but i can really seeing it happen this way.
i hope gsp smashes this guy. serra spent the whole tuf time talking about how much of a dick matt hughes is, but he was the only one acting like a dick.

RAY: Thanks for the Update. Looks like PRIDE is back!! minis Nogueira, plus Couture (eventually) and maybe Arlovski…WOW!!!
If they start a lightweight Grand Prix in March I will be sooooooo excited! If this turns out as big as it could, then the UFC better keep putting out stacked cards, and start taking care of its fighters or they will loose the die hard mma fans. An event that features fighters signed to World Victory Road, DREAMS, and M-1 would be excellent way of putting Dana White back in check.
Turning this into a USA vs. Canada thing is really stupid. I’m from America (along with probably a large majority of the people commenting here), and that doesn’t change the fact that Serra’s got a very, very slim chance of seeing lightning strike twice by beating GSP again.
Actually, it sorta reminds me — the last time I watched a UFC PPV with friends was UFC 79 (featuring Hughes/GSP 3). My friend had a bunch of his co-workers over, and some of them were just embarrassingly stupid. When Hughes came out to his stupid, redneck theme music, I started making fun of him. Some stupid guy said “Well, at least it’s an American song!” When GSP came out and I clapped, he asked how I could support a Canadian. When GSP made Hughes into his own personal pile of pubes, he shut up.
The fight can go either way. Is it really possible for lightning to strike twice? Yes.
Serra already beat GSP. I really wonder what GSP’s approach to this fight will be? Will he attempt to stand? Kick box? Engage Serra in a clinch? Or take the fight to the floor where Serra is at his strongest, but GSP recently proved he is more than formidable. understandably Serra will attempt to close the distance with his striking as he did in the 1st fight.
Will it be another upset if Serra wins again? I don’t think so. Just respect Serra, the styles is definitely going to make this fight.
all these mma promotions talk a big game about “getting along” and sinking campfire songs, but we’ll see how well this goes over when it comes time for them to split the profits and and bills.

That remains to be seen. but you have to admit that if they can work together, we will get to see some amazing events. Just the thought of those guys all fighting each other under the PRIDe rules (which are much more exciting then UFC rules) gives me the chills.
Lets all keep our fingers crossed!

Agreed
all you can say here is that gsp should win
but who knows its mma absolutely anything can happen
didnt really add anything to the discussion there but thats how it is we all know that
GSP has a hard time with people he likes…
Lost to hughs and serra cause he liked em too much…
Different story this go round.
I like both fighters and cant wait to see the sparks fly.
I hope that it lasts a bit more than a round. But I doubt it.
RIP serra 4-19-08
I think the reach advantage will play a huge part in this fight, from a objective perspective, GSP has a size and reach advantage over Serra. Also, GSP has been healthy, training and has fought twice since last April, Serra may have been in shape during TUF, and reports came in that he was 200 lbs while injured and has finally resumed training within the last few weeks. St.Pierre seems focused where Matt seems to be airing his grievances since the UFC decided to create an interim title for 79.
It’s seems lately that GSP has taken and won both of his last fights to the ground. It would almost telegraph that he would plan on fighting from top position, but i wouldn’t be surprised if the fight stays standing.

An event that features fighters signed to World Victory Road, DREAMS, and M-1 would be excellent way of putting Dana White back in check.
its going to happen its obvious that they love mma over their pride events would have 100,000 people in attendence there not going to just stop and there not going to put on a second rate event they will keep getting the big names back over there and as they grow and contracts come up for renewal in the ufc more top fighters will leave.

USA ALL WAY for a 2nd time.. bam!
All GSP has to do is fight from the outside and this fight is his. GSP was too cocky the last time around and deservedly got KTFO’d. This time, he’ll have respect for Serra’s abilities. Serra is gonna have to bullrush GSP to have a chance. GSP won’t be making any stupid mistakes this time around.

not so nice,
serra is a good guy.. its u weirdos that live outside of ny that are strange. wit ur cow tipping and crystal meth abuse.. freaks.
ny is legit son
NY the Gibroni capital of the World….
For me it’s not about the US or Canada. For me it’s about class. Matt Sera lacks it in ALL respects. Just like Phil Baroni, Tito Ortiz, Melvin Guillard, etc. What will they all have in common come UFC 83? Has been or never was. We all need someone to hate but Serra IS the typical NY prick. No one cares about him, he won the comeback season! LOL
GSP by anything he damn well pleases in any round he wants.
HEY,HEY, HEY.CALM DOWN GUYS… We all know that only great things from Canada is Crown Royal and better health care. (Which GSP will need…….so badly) I got your back longislandguy.boo-yah
I hate hockey but don’t forget Gretzky sucka!!!
