BJ Penn on Sean Sherk: ‘I’m going to show this man of cardio what cardio really is’ at UFC 84

“… I’m just training full speed. I’m going to go in there and show this man of cardio what cardio really is…. I’m just going to go kick his ass…. Everybody has questioned my heart, questioned my training ethics, this and that, but I never did something as cowardly as to take any sports enhancement drug…. I think these people going in taking these sports enhancement drugs, they’re not real fighters, they’re athletes. I’m a fighter. I’m a real fighter. That’s all I did my whole life…. Sean’s a great fighter. He’s done a lot of great things in the past. I’ll never dispute that, and it will be a great win, whether he’s on steroids or not. It’s a great win to beat Sean Sherk. It’s going to be sweet beating Sean Sherk on May 24.”
UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn — who has been dogged throughout his career with claims that he relies too much on talent and not adequate training — feels he can beat Sean Sherk at his own cardio game when the two lock horns at UFC 84 on May 24. “The Muscle Shark” has a bottomless tank of stamina, which going into the fight seems to be his one true advantage (strength being the other). “The Prodigy” also can’t help but rant about the steroid issue, labeling Sherk a “cheater” once again — something that clearly gets under the skin of the former champion who has proclaimed his innocence from a positive steroids test back in 2007.

BJ’s gonna beat on Sherk. Steroid withdrawal is gonna hurt Sherk. Just look at the baseball players who got off the juice, they became shit.
to PAT… there is no such thing as steroid withdrawl ….. i know personally…. theres just a period of anger, frustration, and crazy mood swings…. withdrawl is with a heroin addict who shakes and soils underwear…. sherk will win… he is a better fighter…. he has heavy hands… and never gets tired…. sherk will pick up the win… bj sit down
To Mike…..Sherk sure looked like a whipped man to me, wouldn’t you say. While BJ looked fresh and clean…..Penn is the Ali of his sport. Say no more.
Mike,
Sure…BJ beat Sherk into a piece of SPAM and then pulled out the Poi Pounder and beat that steroid loser of a punk into submission. Way to stand up for you fellow steroid loser friend Mike!
BJ will beat sherk for sure, he has all the tools to neutralize all skill that sherk has,
the only trouble for penn in this fight is if he gassed.
but if he has enough cardio for 5 rounds in ufc 84, then this fight is already in his bag
I am so ready for this fight to happen. Put him in a body bag B.J.!
I like how he says that the people taking sports enhancement drugs are not real fighters, and then the next sentence he says that sherk is a great fighter
anyway, BJ please when this fight, you have talked to much not to
PENN ISNT THE SMARTEST CRACKER IN THE BOX!!!!!!!!!
Retire him Penn!
SHERK WILL DOMINATE BJ PENN WITH A VICOUS ASSULT OF GROUND AND POUND!! ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT ABOUT IT THAT MUSCLE SHARK WILL HUMILIATE THE EXTREMELY OVER-RATED PENN…. MAYBE PENN CAN GO BACK AND FIGHT PULVER/PENN 3 AFTER BOTH HE AND PULVER LOSE THEIR NEXT FIGHTS!! G.S.P. POUND FOR POUND CHAMPION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“The Muscle Shark” has a bottomless tank of stamina, which going into the fight seems to be his one true advantage (strength being the other).
Good math. One true advantage, then list a second. Wrestling and speed also would have to go to Sherk’s advantage. Power (i.e. punching power) which is different than the strength has to go to Penn. JJ obviously Penn. Man, this is going to be a fantastic fight! So evenly matched. Is it May yet? Maybe they can change the schedule to put this on UFN 13 since that card is being ridiculously packed anyhow.
Talk is cheap re your cardio BJ… get on that treadmill.!
I’m as bigger fan of BJ as there is but i can see this going one of two ways,
BJ early or Sherk late. Its that simple.
Another BJ vs Hughes..
First 2 rounds, if fight isn’t even over by BJ..Sherk wins it.
And because BJ is that much talented, he should be the victor.
Penn has only had a week off after winning the title and was back training. BJ has realised that if he wants to be a true legend he has to put the work in & be able to go the distance.
Kudos for him getting back into camp so early & training to beat Sherk at what he is known for, his cardio.
We all know BJ has fantastic BJJ and that he has a tendancy to gas if the fight goes on but now he is truely ready to stamp his mark on MMA and become the future hall of famer he should be.
I just hope he is also bench pressing 155 lbs so he can lift Sherk of him while he tries to lay on him for 25 mins!!
I hope BJ is benching more than 155…
I love hearing these two guys run thier mouths back and forth. I for one, am looking forward to the stare down at the wiegh ins!
Sherk is going to lay on him for ten minutes, BJ is going to get tired, Then Sherk is going to throw elbow after elbow until BJ is A) KTFO B) Dead C)Bleeding D) Its the end of the fight. Im pulling for the underdog, sherk ,in this one. That belt is his and everyone knows it, I fully know that he didn’t take steroids, everyone should. Its just another government agency that goes unchecked and can do what ever they want. WAR SHERK!!!!!
Oh please. I wouldn’t go that far. BJ is one of the best fighters in the world and makes us all proud to be from Hawaii. He fights with heart and talent and is going to lay Sherk flat. GO BJ!!!!
ARE YOU AN ALCOHOLIC? BJ PENN IS GONNA GET HIS ASS HANDED TO HIM ONCE AGAIN!! GUARANTEED BOYZZZZZZ,, SHERK IS GONNA POUND THAT POWDER-PUFF INTO THE GROUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!LMAO!!!!!!!!!
GSP P4P CHAMP!
Good one…BJ totally humiliated that punk ass sherk!

I agree. It was very smart of BJ of not taking much time off after the win over stevenson. He was in great shape for that fight and jumping right back into training can only mean he will have even better cardio for the sherk fight.
I think Penn will beat Sherk a lot easier then many of you think. Its going to be a one-sided beating simular to what Penn did to Joe Daddy…
This will be an awesome fight. Can’t wait.
The only way BJ Penn shows Sean Sherk what “cardio” really is, is if he shows him tapes of Sherk’s fights.
Since when did BJ Penn become a guy who can go 25 minutes ? He strings together 2 wins and all of a sudden he is a born again dedicated cardio machine ?
I DONT BUY IT
BJ says his cardio is great now, but in the fight with stevenson it really didn’t look that way.. at the beginning of the second round it looked like he was worried watching how fresh joe was even if he he had got battered..
I say this fight is 50 / 50

Me Too!! If BJ wins this fight, I will recognize him as the real deal from now on…..
I agree sherk didn’t use steroids..
It should be a good fight; can’t wait.
Sherk is crap at finishing fights… BJ will finish him… if he doesn’t i still think BJ gets a decision based on being the only fighter was actively trying to finish the fight in the eyes of the judges…
I tip BJ to school Sherk the way GSP recently schooled Matt the Prat Hughes
I dont really like either fighter but I cant wait to see this one. If Sherk is gonna win its gonna go 5 rounds. The guy couldnt finish Hermes Franca so I dont think hes gonna finish BJ. BJ looked good in his last fight and think he can win in the first couple rounds. Remember GSP destroyed Sherk. BJ could do something similar. Love the matchup cant wait to see who wins this one.

I agree with this, this fight could go either way, just like hughes vs penn 2. That was an amazing fight, I’d say the fight of the year. Styles make fights and I see this as being a much more competitive fight than most seen to give it. I can garantee it won’t be like stevenson/penn it will be a good fight.

I totallly agree. I want Sherk to f’n destroy Penn. Beat the shit out if him!
hughes/gsp/sherk/diego/karo would all be good fights to fight penn even throw koscheck in there penn doesn’t walk through any of these guys, hell even throw serra into the mix and you’d have a good fight.
Everyone seems to forget that Sherks only strength is to work from the top position. You put him on his back like Hughes and GSP did, and he doesn’t stand a chance. BJ has one of the best top control. Very few people that he has taken top position on are successful in either standing back up, and or sweeping him. Just look at the Machida fight. Even Machida who is a great JJ guys as well, and is/was much bigger than BJ, could not get from off of his back once BJ got top control. Sherk is strong and does have great cardio, but seriously, his ground game is totally lacking to the likes of BJ. On the opposite side, even from off of his back, BJ managed to sweep and take back control from his back, against one of the best G n P guys out there (Hughes), albeit he separated a rib but you still see the talent that Penn really has…
I can’t wait to see this fight! I’ll be on my honeymoon so my bro better tape it, lol!
I WONDER WHO IS GONNA GET SCREWED MORE THIS WEEKEND?? YOUR WIFE OR BJ PENN!!!!!!!!!R.O.F.L.!!!!!!!!L.M.A.O.!!
I really want BJ to get this one as it would cement him as one of UFC’s all time greats, cause Sherk (roids or not) is by any means a slouch (have you seen that work out! INSANE.. my eye’s were sore the next day from watchin that ish). With that said, I really hope BJ stay’s away from all these blogs man. BJ’s head should be past FULL with everyone feedin him gas.
His ground game and KO power are truly one of a kind, but he can’t let up for a second in his training just cause most everyone believes he’s gonna win .
DONT LISTEN TO THE CLONES BJ, you’ll be spittin out peices of knucklbow for a week if you take Musclehead lightly.
What the hell, here’s more gas for ya, BJ submits SS in 3.
Sincerely,
One of the clones
THE CEMENT THAT IS IN-BETWEEN PENNS EARS IS THE CLOSEST THING TO PENN EVER CEMENTING HIMSELF AS ONE OF THE GREATEST FIGHTERS!!!!!!YOU HIWWIANN OR SOMETHING?? THIS FIGHT WILL SHOW EVERYONE JUST HOW EXTREMELY OVER-RATED THIS LARD-ASS PENN REALLY IS AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN!!!!!!!!!HE HAS A VERY ORDINARY UFC RECORD>>> LOOK IT UP YOU SILLY HIAWAIIA CLONES>>>>>>>!

BJ has been in two 25 minute wars all the way to the finish dude. Do some research. And Sherk can go the distance when he just lays on top of someone, but can he actualy fight for 25 minutes, not just lay down, i can lay down for 25 minutes LoL With BJ he will have to fight all 25, dodging punches, defending take downs, going for take downs, grappleing in the clinch, defending subs . . . We’ll see huh.

Not to mention all the 3 round decisions he has faught (GSP, Renzo, Machida) Who has Sherk gone 25 minutes with, Florian and Hermes, thats it, its not like he’s faught 30 straight 25 minute fights, in fact i think those are the only two and he was on roids for atleast one of them huh. ALL FACTS!

For your theory to be correct Sherk would have to take BJ down twice in the first 10 minutes of the fight. Atleast come with a realistic prediction LoL
I agree sherk didn’t use steroids..
A little thing, called a “Urine Test” says otherwise, and i believe that over the word of a cheater (sherk) and an internet poster (you).
What about a little thing called a blood test?
But that’s beside the point.
I think Penn is fronting. He is probably the most naturally talented fighter in the world, but he and Sherk will not be on the same level of cardio come May 24.
Don’t forget that frustration can drain the gas tank. That works against both fighters. BJ could tire easily if he is frustrated by being taken down. Sherk may tire if he is unable to secure a takedown after many attempts.
I like to think about the stand up. Sherk has a rock chin and so does BJ. BJ has reach and Sherk has a wicked hook. I love the fight all around. I am picking Sherk, but its a tough fight to call. The line should be interesting. I would bet that both guys come out as favorites. If not though perhaps Sherk would be a small dog. 105 or so.
I think both fighters are terrific but I believe Sean Sherk will come out the victor. Sean’s losses have only come at higher weight divisions — at 155 I believe he’s unbeatable. Regardless, it should be a great fight.
With all the intangible strengths, weaknesses, and stats, you have to look at how each fighter did against the best: GSP.
Sherk was demolished by GSP on the feet and ground. He didn’t land any punches and GSP had barely broken a sweat by the time sherk was tk’od.
Penn, on the other hand, is the only fighter we’ve seen that can stand w/GSP (serra doesn’t count). Despite the eye-poke penn just seemed more technical on his feet. To take a round from GSP is truly an accomplishment.
I see sherk coming out with this lameass lay’n'pray like he always does. To bad for sherk penn has sick jits and WILL find a submission.
bj will tear sherk up
He has only had two fights at 155, but I agree. I don’t think there is anyone at 155 that will beat him. There are guys that can beat him, but I don’t think any of them will.
BJ via armbar
Sherk has no arm to bar.

BJ has had many more than 2 fights at 155, like 9. Beating the likes of Serra, Gomi, Uno, Thomas, Pulver, Stevenson, and a few other no namers that dont exist anymore. Sherk has lost or gone to a decision with and TOP 5 contenders he has faced in any weight class he has faught in. Bj fights from LTWT TO HVWT, all weight classes and fighters that are much much much stronger/taller then himself and sherk for example Rodrigo Gracie and Renzo Gracie at 180 lbs, Lyotto Machida at 205 lbs, Hughes, GSP, Ludwig etc. Bj looks for the best and challenges them, sherk looks for an easy way to a title (dropping to a lower weight class) Which BJ did also but he was already and is naturaly belonging to that weight class and did it after going all the way up to Heavyweight.

Just look at Sherk, WTF is your reasoning to believe he doesnt use??? Look at his body and the fact that hes a cardio freak (or was i should say) and put two and two together both those are results of steroid use. Atleast we know one thing for sure, BJ doesnt use steroids and won both his belts with raw fighting talent, and he was out of shape, pure talent!!!
I think both fighters are terrific but I believe Sean Sherk will come out the victor. Sean’s losses have only come at higher weight divisions — at 155 I believe he’s unbeatable. Regardless, it should be a great fight.
“Weight divisions” ??? Sherk has only faught at one other weight division, no division(s), Bj has faught at all weight division and won in them all except against Lyotto who is still undefeated so i consider taking Lyotto the distance good enough for a natural Lightweight who is like 7 inchs smaller then Lyotto. He took Lyotto much further than Franklin and Bonnar and didnt get knocked out by Lyotto like they both did. Draw your own conclusions . . .
BJ PENN IS THE MOST OVER-RATED UFC NERD IN THE WORLD, AS SHERK WILL SOON PROVE TO EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i hate to upset u people but fat bj has no shot if this fight sees the 2nd round,,,his fat but has no cardio…i cant wait till sherk punks him out
bj should follow chuck into the ifl
OKAY MMAMANIA readers do you know what movie line BJ is ripping off “im going to show this man of cardio what cardio really is” ??????? anyone?
Sounds like BJ Penn is a Usual Suspects fan. Verbal Kint: “Then he showed these men of WILL what WILL really was.”
CAN YOU DIG IT BABY MMMMMMM CHILD.
BJ must be huffing gas if he thinks his cardio is better then sherks

LOL It’s not like fans are just speculating from watching 2 fights. He actually said himself that he has now dedicated himself to cardio. I don’t see why he would lie about training. Do you think he just said that and is now sitting on his couch eating a pizza?
Whether you buy it or not he’s gonna smash Sherk.

Oh, so you think that Sherk is unstopable at 155? i enjoy the opinions of others, and wouldnt bash them for it, if it wasnt for you guys there would be no one to argue/debate with therefor no forum therefor no fun to build on while waiting for these epic battle to ensue. Please, tell me your reasoning for thinking Sherk is unstopable at 155, you dont even think Gomi (who Penn beat) would give him a run for his unearned money??
I’ll bet on Sherk’s cardio over BJ’s any day. If Sherk was more of a lay n pray fighter he’d smash BJ; he’s going to have an easy time getting BJ on his back, the problem is he’s probably going to lay there until something actually happens. BJ is disgustingly overrated but Sherk is not even close to well rounded, which probably gives the edge to BJ. If this fight took place in a bar BJ would land one shot and then end up in a trash can.
(stuffed) in a trash can
Sherk might actually win this fight believe it or not. I think he will take Penn down easily and out work him. Maybe GnP or take it to a decision.
GD, ^ If Sherk was LESS of a lay n pray fighter he’d smash BJ…

If you watch that fight again, at the start of the second round BJ’s corner is telling BJ to “Let Him Go” meaning let Joe calm down from the “rush” Joe had going through himself from the possible cut stoppage, so BJ outboxed him slowly for a few minutes then once Joe lost that adrenaline BJ pounced on him. Thats smart, cautious, not wanting to make a mistake fighting, not a worried fighter. LoL Joe looked so scared for the entire fight except that 20 seconds. When BJ dragged him over to the cage in the first minute of the fight Joe looked sooo scarred that i felt bad for him. That look and Franklins look in Silvas clinch were the most worried ive ever seen a fighter. Almost to tears dude.

I know huh, thats like the look of someone with a gun in thier face, thats a mans raw emotion regardless of how many people are watching or what people might think afterward. Thats why you cant call them a “pussy” or something, cause when you think about it, you and myself would probably look the same way in that situation, as if a gun were in our faces and yes, it is beyond priceless or atleast beyond 39.95 to see a man look so, well, scared. No scripts here huh LoL!!
Sherk didn’t take steroids. BJ has looked awesome in his last 2 fights. Sherk is a tank with enough stamina for 5 title fights. BJ is a talented finisher who can end fights quickly.
I agree.
If Penn doesn’t finish this fight before round 3, Sherk will win in the end.
I enjoy both fighters. Either one winning is fine with me. Can’t wait to see this fight!
sherk almost got submitted a few times vs. Franca. Penn will not be letting him out of those chokes.

I agree as well. BJ is extremely hard to take down and has good standup. Sherk couldn’t GNP Hermes. BJ is a whole nother level of fighter than Franca is. Worse case scenario, BJ wins the first three rounds, gets tired ( if he gets tired), lets Sherk lay n pray for two rounds while he easily pulls guard and remains a little active from the bottom, and wins by decision. Sherk has not finished since he has been at lightweight, I doubt BJ will be his first.
i gotta take bj here too but i dont even understand what hes trying to say here…..i dont see bj winning a 5 round decision in this fight so whats he talking about out-cardoing sherk?….bj is gonna win this fight with a submission maybe a tko….not a decision
the thing about the fight that interests me is that matt hughes dominated sherk’s wrestling in their fight, and penn dominated hughes in the first fight, and the first 2 rounds of the second one.
i think sherk will have a lot of problems with penn.

I’m not retarded. My comment was in response to Rob’s. I didn’t notice the comments in between.
Can you read? I didn’t say there wouldn’t be fighter to give Sherk a run for his money. There are. I said I didn’t think they would beat him. Sherk has an iron chin, limbs which are hard to catch in a sub, strength to power out of submissions, technical boxing, and relentless take downs. I think the only holes in Sherk’s game may be his TD defense and I don’t see Gomi or BJ shooting on him. It could happen I guess. Sherk has proved that he can go 25 mins with black belts, get out of submissions, fight through a wicked cut, and not get tired doing it. Sherk’s tough to beat. Tough to finish. BJ Penn is the same. It just comes down to picking a guy and I am picking Sherk.
