The power of bloggers and the Internet.
Late last week, former UFC heavyweight champion, Tim Sylvia, dropped a line on his forum about his future after his submission loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 81: “Breaking Point.”
To check out that statement click here.
Apparently the remarks set off a firestorm, which “The Maine-iac” now feels compelled to clarify.
Here’s the latest from Big Tim:
“well let me just start off by saying people r fucked up by saying that i want to leave the ufc. I dont its my home and i would love to be there for the rest of my carear. Second I didnt say i wanted or even was thinking about m1 u guys (forum users) asked about it and I told u my manager runs it thats it, so please dont take shit out of context. Some of u people are going to get me in trouble with the ufc.”
First, we here at MMAmania.com never emphasized that he was considering a move to M-1. Our post more or less centered around him getting paid better — it’s clearly something that bothers him (Brock Lesnar is getting paid more than double).
Therefore, look for Sylvia to ask for a salary increase when the time comes. Whether or not he gets it remains to be seen. Tim is not the most marketable fighter (if he embraced the heel role more that might be different) and it’s unlikely that another promotion would break the bank to lure him away from the Zuffa organization.
He is proud to be a UFC fighter and his status as one probably won’t change anytime soon. Sorry, haters.

And who cares!
To be honest, I feel he wants to be in the UFC and it means a lot too him. However I feel that there are much bigger pay days awaiting him outside of the UFC. Many u dont think many companies will pay him big bucks, I disagree. He is a 2 time UFC Heavyweight champion, that title alone is Huge for another organization when its promoting its shows and trying to increase its companies status in the MMA market. In the UFC he wont get much of a pay increase because he has no fans and isnt a big draw. But to a company like M-1, his name adds legitamicy to its organization which is crucial to an upstart company. I dont think he will leave the UFC, but it is possible. He wont be making much more then a base salary of $100,000 per fight in the UFC. He will be able to make much more then that outside of the UFC. Maybe its in his best interest to maybe sign a 2-3 fight contract with M-1, get big bucks to fight Aleksander, Fedor, Barnett and then he could come back to the UFC as a rich man and finish out the last few years of his career back in the octagon.
Just speculating, it is unlikely but it is also a legitimate possibility.
I thought he said he was going where the greener pastures are.
Cro Cop has announced on his blog that he will announce his future plans tomorrow. Lets hope he is returning to the octagon to fight cro cop at UFC 85!

It could be greener in the UFC. Part of the reason we bolded the statement about him wanting to stay in the UFC in the previous post. It was going to get blown out of proportion regardless.

i agree, BUT, i dont think Dana would let him come back to the ufc if he left to fight with M1.Everyone knows how Dana’s sees all other organizations. If he did let him come back he would prolly get paid less than before he left, just because Dana’s a prick and like to flex his muscles.i mos def see what your saying john.
If Tim didn’t want his statement to be taken out of context. He should type it better.
Reading Tim’s Blog Give Me Headache

AGAIN, barnett DIDN’T sign with M1, he has signed with the upstart organization, “World Victory Road” and is going to face Yoshida in japan in march. it was mentioned friday night on insideMMA
i do think big tim vs fedor would be badass
if i were dana i would pay tim in hugs and if he won i would give him twice as many hugs

I think that Dana would let Tim come back and fight in the UFC if he signed on with M1 for a couple fights after his contract expires, especially if he was successful there. Imagine how much more marketable Tim would be if he went to M1 and beat Fedor? I know that a lot of you are going to say that’s impossible and Tim would never beat Fedor but he would definitely stand a chance if they fought. Besides, the fighters that Dana shuns from the UFC are fighters that he has a personal grudge against and feels disrespected the UFC. Tim wouldn’t be breaking his contract if he left after his next fight (unlike Randy). I think that we’ll know what Tim’s doing and what the UFC expects from him when we find out who he’s fighting next. If he’s fighting a boring nobody (like Arlovski with Jake O’Brien) then he’s on his way out. However, if they give him a rematch with Frank Mir then he’s definitely staying.
I hope he leaves. He’ll never hold the UFC title again. He lost to and older Randy and a much better Minotoro. Maybe he can go to another promotion and when he wins that belt, he can wear it all the time when he’s out in public just like he did with the UFC title before he lost it. When this goof used to do that, it kind of reminded me of those douche bags in high school that wore their varsity jackets all the time, even when it was between 85 and 95 degress outside because they need attention. He’s not an exciting or an entertaining fighter to watch. Something tells me that if Tim Sylvia fell off the face of the earth, I think the UFC and the MMA world would get along just fine And by the way Tim, Ive seen better legs on a broken coffe table.

so each weight division should only have a couple fighters to keep competing for the belt since some will never be good enough to compete for the belt?
maybe if tim had more not so boring fights he would make more $
I’ve always thought something was fishy in the sense that Monte Cox runs M-1 and manages a LOT of MMA fighters in other organizations.
Luppers - it is the perfect strategy, especially when you have the backing. When Rnady leaves the UFC and fights Fedor in M1, he will bring his fighters to.
If M1 can get hold of 20 or 30 big names they will be able to compete with the UFC.
P.S If you want to see the latest UFC dig at Arlovski go to the event website - they have made his head larger/or body smaller, its out of proportion.
hey i saw jeff monson aka snowman 2day in wal-mart here in st paul and asked him about him fighting in ufc again…and he said its true he is gonna fight cro cop at ufc 86…jus to let u know jeff monson was buying new headlights and oil for his 89 green bronco
so yeah cro cop is fighting soon vs jeff the snowman monson
Tim…if you cant handle the heat dont start a fire with gasoline……….you big idiot………
I can just imagine Tim typing with one finger… one letter at a time.
They really shouldn’t let this guy blog unless there’s an editor in the room with him.

There aren’t 20 or 30 big names. And what ‘big names’ there are, most of them are already fighting in the UFC. The ‘others’ being Fedor, Barnett (?), Gomi, JZ, and Melendez. Other than that there’s Kimbo who’s a gimmick and Gina Carano who’s a woman. Good luck to M1.

I really don’t like tim Sylvia. In fact, i can’t stand the guy, but just so you know mexicutioner. Ramapage also wears his belt everywhere he goes. But no one talks smack about him doing it.
sounds like he is backpedaling about the M1 comment. His previous quote did imply he was looking to go there, if I recall he said he had a “pretty good in” with M1. To me that implies that he intends to at least see what they have to offer. In his quote above he denies saying that and denies that he is even considering a move to M1, I just have a hard time believing that. What he said is there for everyone to see, and it’s pretty obvious what he meant by it.

Go to teh official UFC 82 site. Fight card analysize. It def is out of proportion.
You cant call Fedor a little shit and duck him like a pussy-and yes you are ducking him, cos like you said your manager runs m-1.
Tim sounds scarred of the UFC. Like a young child trying to hide something he said from his parents.
If M1 can get hold of 20 or 30 big names they will be able to compete with the UFC.
M-1 would have to put on a successful MMA show first…
My point - conflict of interests. How can you be doing right by your client when you run a competitive organization? If Sylvia went to M-1, Cox could NOT manage him.

Its a non exclusive contract and unlike the UFC, you dont need an exclusive contract to fight in M-1. My post was regarding the future, not neccessarily now. I do beleive that we will see some quality mma matches in M-1 sometime in 2009.
Tim is just backpeddling. IMHO his first statement regarding having “an in” with M-1 because Cox is his manager opens himself and Cox up to the possibility of tampering/collusion charges. As an aside, it is my understanding that the lawsuit that Zuffa has prepared for Couture also may involve some form of collusion and according to DW names other people besides Couture.
Big cry baby!

Uh, no. Just that he is not an exciting fighter to watch and not a main draw, so the UFC and MMA would probobly be ok if he lef, just like I pretty much said. It is an opinion genius.

You’re right man. I think its retarded to wear the belt outside of the ring, no matter who it is doing it. The only way I see it being cool is like at a meet and greet or like an autograph session so fans can actualy see it. thats just my take.

did Tim really spell “career” with an a? hahaha what a douche
Why am i being censcored. I need to be heard gawd damit!
I wish more intelligent manuscripts were written here.
Alot of people hate Sylvia which makes him a draw for the UFC too. Just like Tito badboy. Sylvia is worth the money. People who hate Sylvia will watch his fights and hope he loses.
Noguiera won fair and square but there might be some interest in a Big Nog-Maniac II. If anyone is NOT interested in that fight it’s Noguiera. His face looked like a puffy red beach ball after the fight. It was even worse than that- he looked like Kenny Rogers.

If that’s true that’s an odd match up for the UFC to make. Even though he’s lost twice in the UFC, Cro Cop is still a huge draw. Putting him in with a wrestler would seem to make for a potentially boring fight.

Big Timmy…I try and stick up for the Grizzly Bear but he always makes me look bad..its spelled c-a-r-e-e-r Timmy…Not “carear”..I know the big man doesn’t have many skills in the grammar department, but they do make automatic spell check. I guess maybe the blood hasn’t made it all the way up to that lump 4 feet above his ass after that massive Big Nog choke!
He’s a tool who can’t spell. He didn’t think anyone would read his blog because he is his only fan. Tool!
go where the money is Big Tym
Dana must have given Tim a bitch slap and asked him if he wants to be the next unloved UFC veteran.
He has back peddled all the way home to Maine.
I’m pretty sure he’s not leaving UFC.
who cares where they wear their belt, as long as they perform well in the octagon, the thing is tim sylvia sucks, but I want him in the ufc because I wanna see his ass kicked over and over…
Sylvia vs Lesnar please..

I garentee this is BS.
- Monson was clamining that the UFC offered him a number 1 contender match against Chuck Liddell (why the hell would they do that with all the great talent at 205, also Monson vs. Liddell already happened and it was one of the worstmatches Ihave ever seen)

LOL. That really isn’t the type of fight the UFC needs Cro Cop in right now. Just reading “Mirko Cro Cop vs Jeff Monson” makes my eye lids heavy!
if you gonna say that Arlovski’s head is bigger than his body on the UFC website then give link …I can’t find anything that you are talking about.
Only fight that makes sense involving Cro Cop right now is a match up against Brando Verra at UFC 85 in LOndon. Let 2 of the smallest heavyweight in the UFC go at it. It would be a really entertaining match.
I agree John
It surprises me that so many people would be happy to see Tim Sylvia leave the UFC. He has 4 career losses (compared to 24 wins), and they have come against top competition - Big Nog, Randy, Arlovski, and Frank Mir (pre-accident). That’s impressive by anyone’s standards. Even if you hate him and think he’s boring (which his last fight wasn’t) you still have to admit that he’s one of the best HW fighters in the world. The UFC needs as many of those as it can get.

i always thought he was a litlle overrated and had not faced that tough of comp other than aa and randy but his last fight was good and he deserves to be in the top 6-7 in the world.and the ufc is crazy if they let another top ranked fighter go.
yea why would tim leave Sh*it if the future is any thing like the past he will have one fight and then get another title shot
you guys say your not a fan, and he’s not a draw, well your reading about him. just a little contradicting. the heavyweight div. is already in extremely bad condition. also randy has dana by the balls if you ask me or else they would let him go, but instead their fighting to keep him in the ufc.
