UFC 81 recap
True to form Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira survived a beating to defeat Tim Sylvia via submission (guillotine choke) in round three of their fight tonight at UFC 81: “Breaking Point” to capture the interim UFC heavyweight championship crown.

With the win, “Big Nog” made history, becoming the first man ever to hold titles in Pride FC and the UFC.

Some fans newer to the sport may call it “luck,” however, it’s how Minotauro has made a name for himself throughout his career. Even Sylvia acknowledged in his post-fight comments that the Brazilian has an uncanny ability to endure punishment and come out victorious.

As far as the fight is concerned, Sylvia looked dominant in the early rounds, peppering Nogueira with stiff jabs and effective power punches. In fact, “The Maine-iac” had Noguiera hurt bad in the first round, dropping him with a devastating left-right combination. However, Sylvia — like the 30-some odd opponents before him — could not finish.

And he paid dearly for it in the third stanza.

Nogueira respectfully called out Randy Couture during his in-ring post-fight interview. Couture already turned down the fight, but he may want to reconsider after tonight’s performance of Minotauro. It would only add more to his legacy and free him up from his contractual stalemate.

Not to mention, with a win, it would truly mean that Fedor Emelianenko is the only man left for him to conquer to be considered the best heavyweight of all time.

Of course, how could we forget the ridiculously hyped Octagon debut of former WWE wrestling superstar, Brock Lesnar, against former heavyweight champion, Frank Mir.

We didn’t.

Lesnar — with former co-workers “The Undertaker,” Kurt Angle and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin sitting ringside — started out solid, taking down Mir and brutalizing “The Baddest Man on the Planet” with destructive ground and pound. For a minute it seemed like Mir was tapping and the fight was over when the referee stepped in and called a halt to the action.

However, Lesnar dropped about three sledgehammers on the back of Mir’s head as he rolled to avoid the rape. Mazzagatti docked Lesnar a point and the fight wasn’t the same after — Mir eventually caught the giant in a knee bar and he was forced to tap.

Or was he smacking that ass?

That’s what it looked like, anyway … perhaps Greg Nelson didn’t cover the proper way to tap during MMA 101.

It just showed that he was real green when it comes to MMA competition. But having said that, Lesnar did not look terrible. He’s an incredibly strong and athletic fighter with loads of talent. Look no further than Mir’s face after less than five minutes of fight time — it looked like he got into another motorcycle accident.

Put simply, Lesnar has promise … but is UFC President Dana White prepared to pay him a quarter-million dollars to beat up cans while he buds into a potential title contender?

I guess the pay-per-view (PPV) buys will tell that tale.

Mir more than likely didn’t earn himself a title shot with the win, but he did more than enough to earn himself a rematch with Sylvia if he wants it.

In other action, Nate Marquardt was about seven seconds away from ripping Jeremy Horn’s neck off his spine before “Gumby” wisely tapped. Marquardt looked real strong and powerful. If he keeps it up he’ll get another crack at the 185-pound crown real soon.

“Nate the Great,” in the meantime, may have earned himself a rematch with Ricardo Almeida, who wasted no time submitting last-minute replacement, Rob Yundt. Almedia tapped Marquardt in a legendary Pancrase bout that included a Renzo Gracie post-fight kick the face.

Google it.

Tyson Griffin kept on trudging, earning a well-deserved unanimous decision over a game Gleison Tibau. Griffin is a force, but he needs to start putting guys away if he really wants advance to the front of the line in a crowded lightweight division title picture.

It’s late and the New York Giants are on the eve of winning their first Superbowl in 18 years; therefore, this recap is ending a bit sudden. For all the UFC 81 round-by-round coverage click here.

Fuck Yeah!!!!! Mir by Leg Lock! To me that is the sign of a true BJJ guy. Taking a beating and still coming up with the sub. Lesner still needs alot of time to learn BJJ and MMA but he could be good. WOW Lesner is strong but Mir hung in there and won. As far as Big Nog that was great. He almost got KO’d but came back and got the douche bag with the Guillotine. I new once he was on top it was over but I didn’t think with Guillotine. LOVE IT!!!

Lesnar hit Mir in the back of the head twice at most. Also, the only reason Mir got hit their is because he turtled up in half-gaurd and it was the only area Brock could hit. In an early fight, Tibau hit Griffin in the back of the head like 2 times and never got stood up.

It was a bullshit stand up and point deduction, but the bottom line is that Brock wasn’t ready for Mir. With more experience he will be a force (Hughes was arm-barred in similar fashion early in his career). The dude punches INCREDIBLY hard and his wrestling/athleticism is ridiculous. He was spinning around Frank’s body like a lightweight.

The card was fuckin awesome, I’ve never seen two main events live up to the hype so well.

Great win for Mir. As for Lesnar, damn, potential right there. He needs to focus primarily on some jiujitsu. He moves fast. His transition to side control after the standup was like a lightweight. Lookin forward to seeing him fight again once he gets some more training.

Bad reffing by Mazagatti WTF no warning and to stop the fight that was BS. And then after brock is tapping mazagatti is just sitting there what did he think brock was mounting an offensive be slapping mirs ass, that could have easily been a torn acl Wake up mazzagatti and do your f***ing job.

he totally kicked Mir’s ass! (that point deduction was a joke)
I still can’t believe Mir won by that pussy leg-lock. Yeah, it was good jj, but how can Mir feel good about this win. He was getting pounded. I think gnp and knockouts are much more entertaining to watch than a squeak-by leg-lock. Lesnar won’t make that mistake again and destroy who he faces next.

I didn’t think Nogueira had a chance in this fight, even though I really wanted to see him win. He’s got to be one of the most tenacious fighters I’ve ever seen. He gets the crap kicked out of him but he still finds a way to win. I think Randy needs to bite the bullet and fight Nogueira. It’s obvious that the top three heavyweights in the world are Fedor, Randy and Nogueira. If Randy can’t get Fedor, he should at least fight Nogueira.

Noguiera pulled it off! I thought the fight would go the full five with Sylvia avoiding the takedown and destroying Nog’s face. It looked pretty bad after less than three full rounds. Noguiera is the legit champ. I think he submits Couture if that match ever happens.

Brock Lesnar… can you say Human Growth Hormone? The guy’s hands are the size of catcher mitts. They even said he needed to have gloves custom made. Apparently the largest size fit Sylvia who is 5 inches taller (if he stood straight up- stop slouching Tim). Barry Bonds was in the audience. Do you think maybe those guys go to the same doctor’s office to get their steroids?

Lesnar definitely has potential and I look forward to seeing him fight again in nine months or so during which time he’ll hopefully develop some skills.

I don’t think it was a great win for Mir. He had nothing to gain and a lot to lose coming into this match. Hopefully Joe Silva will keep easing him back in. Two more silver class opponents before he fights a top guy- winner to get a title shot. I was just thinking Mir-Vera would be a nice matchup but I forgot Vera already beat the crap out of him. It’s hard to find active, non-contender heavyweights he hasn’t already fought.

I didn’t take the time to look to see who wrote that, but that whole comment about Mir maybe not earning himself a title shot, but might get to fight Tim Sylvia, who is a friggin tool, and is a fighter whom he already beat by snapping his forearm in two. Ridiculous. Open your friggin “expert” eyes and take a look. Frank Mir is the best HW in the UFC that hasnt been gettin the “title shot” recognition. Who else would’ve lasted through that beatin he took from a friggin beast, and then actually come back and win? Nogueira is about the only person who might be able to pull that off, just cause that’s what he does. Lesnar looked good, but as predicted by people who know what the fat they are talking about, wasn’t experienced enough to keep from lettin the BJJ catch up to him and cost him the fight.

Frank Mir vs Nogueira once Couture turns the fight down (which he shouldn’t… Couture vs Nogueira is a hell of a fight).

See ya’ll in Columbus to watch Andrei destroy O’Brien and prove to Dana and all the other critics he is still one of the best in the world, and far too valuable to let go. Also, Dan Henderson will be finishing off Silva in the 2nd round. You can quote that. 2nd round stoppage for Henderson to gain the UFC title.

Absolutely not. Frank Mir has looked good in only two fights recently and although he’s on his way, he can’t get a title shot already. He’s beaten HARDONK and LESNAR, two fighters that are very inexperienced in MMA and even more inexperienced in BJJ. Frank needs a big fight against top or at least veteran competition before he earns a shot at Nog.

Mir is just too gifted in BJJ, it is kind of just picking on a little kid in Lesnar when it comes to that discipline. Lesnar was not afraid he’ll box, wrestle and kickbox anyone but he MUST LEARN BJJ, I saw how he got caught and it was silly. Hope he starts where he should have, with a lesser skilled fighter.

I am suprised nobody spoke of the Lytle/Bradley fight and how after getting KTFO Bradley was covering up from the ref and actually put the ref in full guard. That was hysterical! Mos Def one of the funnier things I have seen on any PPV event, besides Heath Herring knocking out that guy who kissed him on the mouth.

Next Couture needs to man up and fight Big Nog. The one thing all these guys forget is they are nothing without the fans. The Fans want this fight so I think he needs to deliver. After he fights Nog and eventually FEdor then he can call himself the best in the world. Doesn’t Couture need to avenge the Barnett loss as well, before he can be considered the very best anyway? Thats what I think. I am so tired of these Rockstar sttitudes in the fight game. Are they trying to become more laike boxers and their rockstar ways? That being said, I hope Randy does the right thing by fighting whats in front of him. I think it it is also extremely insulting to Nog, when Randy says their are no other fights in the UFC for him.

Awesome card, Almeida’s & Marquadt’s guillotine were super tight.

Well, Brock is the real deal, inexperienced, but definately the real deal - he is an untamed beast. He made one mistake and it cost him the fight, all he had to do was back up, let Frank get up and just go right THROUGH him again. He was destroying Mir for the first minute and a half of that fight and lost it in 5 seconds. IMO - Lesnar is “The Next Big Thing” of MMA and would destroy 90% of the HW strikers out there. He will have some trouble with the good submission guys. (Note: 2 very dominating champs have early sub losses on there career as well - Hughes - Liddell)

Whoever thinks Mir deserves a title shot after that win, im sorry, but you have no idea at all. Frank unfortunately wouldnt have made the main card if it wasnt for Brock. Mir is 3-2 since his return with wins over Brock, Hardonk, Christison - not exactly top ten.

Outsdanding night of fights, at least when it concernes the Griffin fight as well as the co-main events!

It’s hard for me to decide whether I was more hyped and experiencing a mark out moment when I saw Nog subbing that big ape, or during the first few seconds of the Brock-Mir fight when it looked it might be over before it even started.

First off, congrats to Mir. I never really liked the guy, but it’s good to see him proving that superior skill is indeed more important than sheer brute strength. Brock, while looking extremely explosive and light on his feet (and on top on the ground), was absolutely oozing inexperience. You could see it with his GnP, the way he was caught in the kneebar and how clumsily he dropped to the ground during that submission attempt by Mir. However, while giving Mir all the kudos he deserves, I think Brock has huge potential, and with time could be a true title contender, surely a much more exciting one than Kongo\Werdum\Timmay.

When it comes to Mir, I do not believe this should earn him a title shot against Nog. After all, even Werdum beat a much higher ranked HVW in Napao, so why on earth should a win over an almost complete rookie grant him a title shot? I agree he should try going through Timmay and possibly Gonzaga first, before even thinking about a title shot.

I also found it extremely funny how while Rogan and Goldberg were obviously told not to say a word about Randy being in Griffin’s corner, not to mention the cameramen that were told not to even dare showing his face- Nog comes out and calls Radny out right in front of everybody, just the way it should be. Would love to have seen Dana’s face when he heard that.

Would also like to add that while never having been a fan of Pride, Nogueria really impressed me today. I hate Timmay as much as the next guy, but I didn’t give Nog a chance in this fight, certainly not after the first two rounds, and yet, that sweep on the ground and the quick and masterful guilliotine were absolutely beautiful to watch, truly poetry in motion. Big props to Nog, and thank goods we’re done with the scary thought of people actually ranking Timmay 3rd in the world.

Awesome PPV, resulting in perhaps the best lineup of champions possible for the UFC at the moment:

LW: Baby J Penn
WW: GSP\Serra (cough cough)
MW: The Spider
LHW: Rampage
HW: Big Nog

2 thumbs up Dana!

Hardonk and lesnar the only two hes finished and he barely won a a decision against christison he hasnt earned a title shot NO way
mir ??is a b itch brandin vera destroyed him -thats the fight -vera -mir rematch then fight for the belt.

The Mir/Lesnar fight was OK….Mazagatti seemed to pumped before the fight even started, if u really watch the instructions he gave before the fighters started he seemed different and I have to wonder if the size of the fighters and hype had gotten to him a little because he seemed out of his element during the fight, which is rare because I have never seen anything like that from him before. The biggest difference I saw having watched the all access before hand is that Lesnar looked like all he was doing was doing modified wrestling traning and not enough hardcore MMA training, he needs to get to a real MMA camp like Jacksons in New Mexico if he wants to train right and go beyond the wrestling background he has. I think if Jackson has proven he can take that type of athlete and make them into top level MMA fighters. Lesnar has a ton of potential its just he needs to move beyond his comfort level he has in his camp and move to a MMA camp, I think u see the same thing happening to Lidell he is not evolving his game and u can see it in his perfomnaces as of late. I would hope Mir would get a title shot or a fight that gets him the next shot at the title whom ever may have it at the time! I was one of those who was thinkin he was done after the accident and he looked bad when he came back, but hey I was wrong and I think he has overcome several challenges in life and deserves the shot!
Big Nog its only a matter of time before he gets caught, I have never been a Sylvia fan and did not think he had the stamina to stay with Nog if the fight went past 2 rounds. Tim had him hurt but like Hearing before him but could not put him away…..Tim should be done really in the UFC to a degree like Horn/Franklin/Ortiz/Hughes they can fight those up and comers to see if thay have what it takes against a upper level fighter but thats about it, the days of title shots should be OVER!

oh, and the point deduction stoppage was complete and total BS. I guess that was a “Welcome to UFC” present for Brock.
Where’s Big John McCarthy when (Lesnar) needed him.
Hell ya it was -no warning-stop the fight-for 30 seconds-lol
then brock didnt know what to strike-mir was turning his head side ways-when he got grazed-lol-give lesnar 6months with a black belt -teaching him sub defense.Thats all he needs -did you see him do the wax on wax off head kick atempt lol Mir was holding onto that leg for his life.

That point deduction by Mazegatti was not BS. Brock hit Mir in the back of the head 3 times in a row.

Anyways, thinking that size and strength always overcomes technique is common with most casual fans but at our gym, we all knew that Nog and Mir had the advantage in technique. Because Brock and Tim were so inexperienced in BJJ, they had very had time finishing their opponents which most often happens on the ground. If you noticed, Tim knocked Nog flat on his behind but was unable and even unwilling to finish him on the ground. Same thing with Brock, when he couldn’t finish Mir with his barrage of hammerfists, he then had a lack of options. IN reality, its very hard to KO your opponent on feet, especially if he has pretty good stand up defense.

It was a great matchup of styles and for anybody that said that Nog and Mir won in an unexciting sub fashion, everyone at our gym went crazy when they won.

he totally kicked Mir’s ass!
Lesner had no power behind those baby punches, that dude needs alot of work

Hey, Where is Pete? Pete, where are you and what happened to your boy Lesnar?
My boy Lesnar come within seconds of putting Mir in the hospital! He was destroying Mir until he got caught in that leg lock. He threw Mir around the ring like he was a little girl. Kudos to Mir for his BJJ. Brock will be back!
You know honestly, I am not taking anything away from Lesnar. He keeps himself in the gym 24-7 like he has been, give him a few more fights and the dude is going to be a monster in the HW div. I’ll give him that.

The fact of the matter is; Lesnar lost and that’s the end of the story. Have you ever noticed that when our favorite fighters lose, we all have something to say and some kind of excuse and continue to rant about it for weeks? But what happens when our favorite fighters who have won in the past were actually getting smashed on, but turned the heat up and submitted or KO’d their opponnet? We’re happy and when someone tries to tells us that he got “lucky”, we sure as hell don’t want to hear that person huh? Ever thought about that?

Excuses are like buttholes, we all have one!

Kongo already has a fight (against Herring I believe). I wouldn’t give Mir a title shot though. He needs to beat an established fighter first. Maybe a rematch with Brandon Vera.
love how  ufc fans said tim silvia was gonna knocked big nog out….halarious  Pride HW’s>UFC HW’s couture needs to stop being a pussy and fight Big Nog stop trying to act like hes on fedors lvl till hes actually beat someone as good as big nog.
Hey John, I’ll admit I was wrong about Tim KOing Nog. I know no one has done it before, I just though Tim could hit him hard enough to do it. Nog has by far, the HARDEST head in the game. Nog has the heart of a lion and Tim has very little heart. I should have took into consideration that Nog is famous for taking a beating and coming back to win by submission. By the look on Tim’s face at the beginning of the 3rd round it was only a matter of time until he lost. Tim is a dummy, and his post fight comments prove it, “just when I started to feel comfortable fighting this guy…” You should never feel comfortable fighting a guy like Nog. However, Nog did not pick Tim apart on the feet, but rather was a punching bag. I to feel Randy has to come back and fight Nog and hope he is compelled to do so now. This fight would be every bit as good as Fedor vs Randy. This fight is one of very few wins of Pride HWs over UFC HWs (Werdum and Nog are the only ones that come to mind), so I don’t think it’s accurate to say that Pride HWs > UFC HWs, because UFC HWs have much more wins. Let me finish with saying that with Nog winning it does add to your tuneup fight theory.

I fully agree. If Couture wants to be the best, he has to fight Nog. I’ve wanted to see this fight forever, and now there’s a perfect reason for it to happen.
Really though, it’s all in Randy’s hands. Dana would let it happen, Nog would accept the fight, and the fans would love it. All we need is Randy to man up.

I loved the fight card. I was very impressed with Lesnar’s brute strength. I knew he would be strong but so dominant!?!?

I think Joe needs to setup a Lesnar vs Sylvia fight. That would be a better entry fight for Brock I think and a good comeback fight for Tim. Neither have to worry about submissions and would create a great entertaining fight.

Congrats to the Lumberjack Boetsch. He was just chopping away on Heath, who I have never cared for as a fighter. It was so exciting to see him come in like that!

Great PPV!!!!
