couture lesnar

“Obviously I have a lot of respect for Brock Lesnar’s wrestling ability. He was an NCAA champion, which is an elite group of individuals. I don’t think it was a wise choice to jump in and fight a former heavyweight champion. He has the potential to be a legitimate MMA contender. But we won’t know until he fights legitimate MMA competition.”

– Randy Couture tells the Los Angeles Times about his thoughts on the heavyweight fight between Frank Mir and Brock Lesnar at UFC 81: “Breaking Point” tomorrow (February 2) at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. For those keeping score “The Natural” has now tabbed Tim Sylvia and it appears Frank Mir as winners this weekend. Feel free to lay down some wood over at BetUS.com with the MMA prediction wisdom of Couture.

Well, Lesnar did come very close to disrespecting Randy when he said (paraphrasing) “there’s no other heavyweight that has as much training as I do… except for a guy who… who retired”. I’m not saying he did, but I think by his tone, he came close.

If I were number 1, I’d laugh at that comment as well.

I’m with Randy. 1 minute of experience in 1 mma match doesn’t make a winner. I don’t think ANYONE should get a UFC contract, unless they’ve had at least 5 fights in other organizations, against real opponents.

HellBOY is back!

http://www.mmaweekly.com QUOTE:

After have a rollercoaster past couple of years that has seen him alternate wins and losses, the current MMAWeekly.com No. 10 ranked lightweight, Norwegian fighter Joachim Hansen is looking to 2008 to bring him the kind of continued success he achieved in years prior.

According to Hansen, he will be taking that first step soon, as he completes his current two-fight contract with K-1 at a Hero’s event. While unconfirmed by the promotion, Hansen believed the date of the event to be March 15.

Although he does not know whom he will be facing, Hansen believes he will be squaring off against a Japanese opponent for the second time in a row for the promotion.

Other rumored, but currently unconfirmed, participants in the event look to be Shinya Aoki, who appears to be slated to take on Gesias “JZ” Calvancante; Denis Kang; former Chute Boxe fighter Andre “Dida” Amade; and multi-time Abu Dhabi Champion Marcelo Garcia.

I completely agree with you. Brock Lesnar would be such a stud if he can prove to be good exciting and everyone who used to watch wrestling (or still does as a guilty pleasure) knows he is an entertainer. This is exactly what the UFC needs to bring it forward to the main stream. At the same token I think Frank Mir would also make an awesome HW champ if he could get back there again. I am just not sure he would have the same draw and popularity (or haters) as Lesnar already has without having even stepped into the octogon yet.

Brock is coming in with a game plan and it may not be what people would expect (Take down and GP). That would be a mistake, as Mir will eventually get a submission.

I believe he will keep the fight standing, stuff Mir’s take downs and wait for an opportunity to throw bombs. If he has even acquired average striking skills, given his size/strength a punch from him could be devastating.

I have never watched the WWE, just not my thing. I will however be pulling for Brock for many reasons, but mostly because he just seems like a good guy and I like the whole underdog thing. I am not sure why people are so quick to attack him. In every interview he has been honest and upfront about his inexperience in MMA and I take my hat off to him for being able to wade through all the BS and still want to get involved….it’s not like he needs the money. So he is there, because he truly wants to be UFC star and I respect the guy for that.

I predict/hope… Lesnar by TKO, ref stoppage in the 2nd round.

I agree with Randy on this one..Brock is a beast and has the tools..the name..to be one of the topdogs..but Frighting a rejuvenized and focused former HH UFC Champion Mir from jumpstreet isn’t the best move..I give him props for it..he may win..I don’t think so though..he has been training MMA in the las two years or so..doesn’t make him that guy..you have to fight top fighters..to excel. If he was fighting Mir two years from his MMA Pro debut..I would see the outcome of a fight with Frank Mir a bit differently.

Lesnar will not just hold Mir down for a decision. Lesnar is going to unleash the most vicious ground and pound. He’s got giant fists and ready to bang. The XXL gloves are too small for him! I can’t wait to see Lesnar bring the pain! It’s unfortuante for Mir though, I like him, but I’m with my boy Brock. I met him twice in person, he’s a big dude.

I see your point, but that’s why they call it an upset. From purely a fan perspective, there is so much to love about this fight, but when you consider the much talked about “growth of the sport” into otherwise untapped markets, it’s a home-run.

The UFC wins either way and if Brock has even a decent showing it won’t matter if loses to Mir. He will have proven that he could go the distance with a bonafide pro and all this debate about his abilities comes to a screeching halt.

it was on “all-access” last night. brock can’t fit into the teh XL gloves and the UFC is looking into making him a special set of gloves that actually fit his hands.

after watching All Access last night, there is no way we are gonna have to worry about brock being gassed. all he does is train. he doesn’t have a cell phone, internet, or pc and lives in the middle of nowhere.

UFC / DANA can’t seem to sign anyone else worth signing and can’t seem to keep the ones they have. Everyone is jumping ship and no one seems to be buying a boarding pass.

Brock was a publicity signing. We’ll see what happens tomorrow.
I disagree. The UFC as a brand has never been stronger then it is right now and despite missing out on some top names (Fedor, Randy) they are by far the king of all MMA. It’s the leauge that defined the sport and still attracts the best in the world. To say otherwise is just plain wrong.

The contract Fedor signed with F1 was ridiculous and that league will fold as a result. When it does, all the most talented fighters will run to the publicity, sponsors and endorsements a contract in the UFC brings with it.

I think Randy’s comments were honest, metered and respectful. There was no badmouthing.

he has turn his hype into action 1st. lets see him fight 2 or 3 times,to see what he’s really of capable of,then if the fan saw what he really can do & compete in the MMA top fighter, then bring on Randy!

You guys are all buying into the hype. Brock has virtually zero fighting experience, and he is fighting an ex-champion. Even if Brock does win it will be by laying on top of him for 15 minutes. zzzzzzzz
PDP had the same record when he beat the piss out of Mir. You think PDP is better than Brock?

All you MMA non-believers can now look back at your ridiculous prediction that some WWE wrestler could even have a chance against a trained MMA guy in the same weight class and realize (hopefully in your wallet) how ignorant you were being. 90 second submission - give me a break. Have you ever seen anyone tap out in such an absurd way. I thought he was slapping Mir’s ass saying, “Let go! Let go!” The ref had to actually ask him if he was tapping out.

Luckily for me, I understand what it takes to step into the octagon and am now $10,000 richer for it.

Im sorry but the ufc does NOT i say again does NOT need an entertainer!! This is not wwe! this is fighting! Watching the guys face get smashed in or watching an “entertainer” Tap out like a 5 year old bitch! Is entertainment enough for somebody who understands where this sport has been and where it should remain! I hate to break it to you but in real life there is no ref to stand you up! You have no idea what kinda of talent and dedication it takes to train in BJJ for years to the point that it is like second nature to roll from one submission to another while thinking of a third and fourth!! You think that because a guy is huge and dumb he can win! I think it is pathetic! Ive competed in 7 matches and a few bar fights and the bar fights are always easier enven though the guy has me by 50 lbs! I hope you all have a new found respect for this sport and what it truly represents!

Can’t wait to see Lesnar literally ram his words back down his throat soon. Bet Couture nor none of you naysayers saw any of this coming.
