mauricio shogun rua
Well, that didn’t take long.

Last night we passed along an interview with former UFC light heavyweight champion, Chuck Liddell, during which he revealed for the first time that a fight was in the works to face former Pride FC 205-pound standout, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

Today, Tatame.com caught up with the Brazilian who confirmed that the fight was indeed on and that he looks forward to avenging the loss of Wanderlei Silva (Liddell defeated Silva via unanimous decision at UFC 79: “Nemesis” in December 2007):

Here’s the snip from Shogun (roughly translated):

“I confirmed that fight yesterday. Everything is agreed for June and I hope to make this a huge fight and represent my good team … For sure I’m going to avenge Wanderlei … he passed by Curitiba for a short time and then left to his city, but we got to get together and talk. We are going to make an exchange, but i don’t know when thats going to happen. Everything depends on the strategy my team has for this fight…. [Chuck] has a very good boxing and wrestling team. Liddell’s game is more standing, but it can be an error trying to take him down because it requires a lot of strength. I am going to try to improve my tactics with Alejo Morales, my brother and the rest of the team, but I can exchange with him and finish this fight standing.”

Now that’s a fight. June can’t come soon enough.

Let’s not forget Shogun has much potential, his training just has to accomodate for the CARDIO and strenght standards of the UFC, theyre much higher than when he fought easier comptetition in PRIDE.

SHOGUN is still my favorite fighter

Mania Vet John seemed to of hit what the UFC is wanting to do for Chuck..if Chuck can beat the two fighters that destroyed Page in JApan..that be their case for making him the next in line to fight for the belt after Page/Forrest.

To bad Chuck is fighting Shogun..who ever feels that his last outing best represents Shogun..you’re truely mistaken. Shogun will beat Chuck..that is the only way is it ending up.

This is a win/win matchup for the UFC LHW division…it’s basically a #1 contenders match because either way the winner makes for a good hyped fight against Rampage or even Forrest.

Forrest/Liddell…teacher/student from TUF1
Forrest/Shogun…rematch
Rampage/Shogun…rematch from Pride where Shogun fed knees to Page.
Rampage/Liddell…rematch…again.

I hear that. Call me crazy but I think Shogun also has a great shot at taking Chuck down, but he has to do it after 1st setting it up with leg kicks and strikes, or get a ju jitsu trip on chuck, off of a clinch.

People seem to think Shogun has bad Cardio, or that he hasnt faced tough competition. I dont see it that way at all. I remember Shogun beating a very tough opponent, Noguerra’s twin brother Rogerio in a 20 minute war, that I think won fight of the year. Shogun is also much bigger then wanderlei and I think the size advantage played a major role in chuck beating wanderlei. Chuck wont be able to enjoy that kind os size advantage against shogun.

This is a great match up. This will be an even better fight then Chuck vs. Wanderlei. I cant wait for this fight. My birthday is in June and if this fight takes place in Vegas, I might have to make a trip out there. This is a mega fight, that IMO is up there with Anderson Silva vs. Dan Henderson.

Keep in mind its been 3 fights since Chuck KO anybody. Is the mistiqe of the Iceman melting away? This is a great fight that can go either way, but i would have to side with Shogun on this 1.

Dana White To Randy Couture: “Come on Captain America, step up and be a man.”
Randy Couture has stated repeatedly over the past few months that he will not step foot in the octagon again unless it’s against Fedor Emelianenko. But that doesn’t seem to stop Dana White from trying. White spoke to The Canadian Press recently and issued the following:

“Come on Captain America, step up and be a man and give these guys the opportunity to win the title,”

“He’s the heavyweight champion. He signed a contract with us less than a year ago and I expect him to honour it. And I expect him to be a standup guy and give these guys the opportunities they gave him.”

Bad style match for shogun, chuck by ko. I think if Chuck beats Shogun then he will be second or third in line for the shot…I would like to see Machida vs Jardine for first in line to kill two birds with one stone, but it looks like machida will fight Tito, and Jardine will fight ???..It looks like its a good thing the belt is on hold for awhile so the 205 can work itself out who the contenders are, they are going to have to keep fighting and winning against top competition anyways, since Rampage or Forrest cant fight every couple of moths against whichever #1 contender it is a the time

He don’t underestimate Shogun’s striking. He has big wins standing up even over Rampage. Also remember Chuck didn’t do so hot standing against Keith Jardine, and that was mainly because of a lot of leg kicks, which Shogun cna handle and on the ground its no competition.

Comparing Jardine’s style with Shogun’s? They are about at opposite as Royce Gracie and Cabbage.

Jardine was a matchup nightmare for Liddel. Jardine sits back and kicks the shit out of you. Liddel is a counterpuncher that likes to have the action pressed.

Rua comes forward right at you. Very aggressive. He wont sit back and just kick.

And he and Jardine are similar?

Already looking forward to June…

As a fan, 2008 (well, beginning Dec. 29th 2007) will be the year we remember - Champion vs Champion, PRIDE vs UFC…

The loser of this fight will find themselves in a tough spot, and possibly contemplating their career in the UFC. Shogun would be 0-2 fighting in the octagon. I can just imagine what all the PRIDE haters would be saying if that were to happen. If Chuck loses, I don’t see him EVER making another run at the title. This is do or die time for both fighters. Who wants it more? Does Chuck want to re-gain his status as UFC LHW champion or does Shogun want to step out of the shadows of Wanderlei Silva and prove that he is the greatest Brazilian Chute Box fighter (note: Wanderlei no longer trains with Chute Box). Shogun would have gotten title shots in PRIDE, but since Wanderlei was champ, he did not want. He would not fight his best friend. If Shogun wants to wear a UFC belt, he MUST defeat Chuck Liddell in impressive fashion (not Keith Jardine style, Rampage style)

Everyone thinks because of chucks two loses that he’s past it. All the great fighters take a slump and chuck showed in devastating fashion against wandy that he’s back. If Shogun wants to wear a UFC belt, he MUST defeat Chuck Liddell in impressive fashion (not Keith Jardine style, Rampage style)
I agree that 2008 could end up with the greatest compilation of fights. I think we are finally going to see the culmination of UFC’s purchase of Pride this year. I really think a lot of the Pride guys are going to make some noise this year. I think the transition into the UFC for the Pride guys is more difficult then we recognize. The guys from Pride who are finding success are either American or fought in other promotions before coming to the UFC. I give guys like CroCop the benefit of the doubt and hope that he can acclimate to the UFC and have a career resurgance.

It will be a great matchup. Both Chuck and Shogun are willing to fight anyone that is offered to them and both have whipped some tough guys. If chuck was so over the hill he would be fighting Chumps to decisions.( I guess the Jardine fight would be the only example, before the haters bring that up.) Chucks still exciting to watch, he’s capable of beating a lot of top 205 guys. Shogun lost to Griffen, but it was a pretty exciting fight. I doubt Shogun will gas this time around. I can understand hating a Bisping type guy, but what has a guy like Chuck ever done wrong for the sport?

So you guys are talking all this about Liddell beating Shogun…. HAHAHAHA…. Maybe, those that feel as if Liddell will win. Go research on what a ACL injury can do to you… Griffen only won the fight because if it… Mark my word Shogun is going to kick the hell out of Liddell and I look so forward to it… Ranked #2 in LHW (Shogun) will go up in ranking very soon…

OK, DON’T FORGET! Liddell will beat him like a pig! Liddell beat the Master and now he will beat the Apprentice, trying to avenge his Master’s loss!

Shogun beat Forrest down 1st round EASLY winning! Second round he was kicking Forrest ass till about mid way when he fully gased.

We can argue about what injuries do to fighters all day long. The point is that Forrest beat Shogun that night. I’m sure Shogun would do much better in a rematch but what happend happen.

I have a really bad feeling Shogun is getting KTFO in the 1st round. I’m a Shogun fan and would love to see him win but I do also realise that he was overrated in his Pride days. What I’m saying is I like his style and I think he’s an exciting fighter but Chuck is a nightmare for him. I think this could be one to add to Chuck’s highlight reel. I seriously hope I’m wrong.

Bad matchup for Shogun, although he can win. He ain’t doing it by taking Chuck down, though.

Note to the morons all over who seem to think Chuck can be beaten by taking him down: please stop talking, you look foolish. The only way anybody has beaten Chuck this century is by kicking his ass on the feet. Sometimes it gets finished on the ground, but it always starts by beating Chuck in the kickboxing.

Unfortunately, Liddell will probably beat Shogun in the same way he beat Silva - with straight punches, the one thing Shogun has going for him is that he has longer arms than Silva and will probably land more.

Either way it’s going to be a great fight

It depends on who shows up… focused and ready Chuck or not… Shogun in shape, or not.

All things being equal, I think Chuck will come out on top again.

The only way Shogun beats Chuck is standing with him. Just ask Tito and Wandy how those ELBOWS feel when you get to close in the clinch. The question is , can Showgun take the beating Wandy took and still stay standing. I think Chuck got a little to cocky and started to feel invincible, but he got a wake up call with back to back losses. Chuck’s back on track and it’s going to be hard to stop him.
He don’t underestimate Shogun’s striking. He has big wins standing up even over Rampage. Also remember Chuck didn’t do so hot standing against Keith Jardine, and that was mainly because of a lot of leg kicks, which Shogun cna handle and on the ground its no competition.
To say someone is better than Chuck on the ground is a moot point. When was the last time he was on the ground and when was the last time he was subbmited?

Baseless? Just because you didn’t notice the size and aggression difference from his Pride fights, some others did. It’s no secret that his camp likes to use the JUICE.

This could play out to be an interesting fight. Chuck seems to have an obvious advantage, but I’m kinda scared that Chuck will lose.
