Former UFC light heavyweight champion, Chuck Liddell, indicated that his next opponent could be former Pride FC standout, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, in a recent interview with SportsIllustrated.com.
Here’s the snip:
“Possibly Mauricia “Shogun” Hua. That’s what they’re saying. If it’s the June fight, it will probably be in London. But my trainer is trying to get it moved to Vegas. Too far. (Liddell is based in San Luis Obispo, Calif.)”
Up until this point, Liddell had been doing everything but sending out smoke signals that he was looking to rematch Keith Jardine next. That’s because “The Dean of Mean” upset the “Iceman” at UFC 76: “Knockout” in September 2007.
Now it appears things could have changed.
Shogun lost his Octagon debut to Forrest Griffin via submission (rear naked choke) the same evening Jardine defeated Liddell. The Brazilian underwent knee surgery immediately following the loss and has not competed since.
Liddell is fresh of a thrilling three-round victorious brawl with Wanderlei Silva at UFC 79: “Nemesis” last December. It’s widely believed that if he can win his next fight he’ll take on the winner of the fight between UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Rampage Jackson, and Forrest Griffin later on this year.
If Liddell and Shogun do indeed fight it would pit two of the top 205-pound fighters in the world up against on another.
Stay tuned for more details.
Note: Rua’s camp confirmed via FightNetwork.com that he will not be competing on the UFC 83 fight card on April 19 in Montreal, Canada, as previously rumored.

only one thing i can say HOLY SHIT
hells to the yea, i hope this fight happens and chuck whoops some ass. then maybe one more win or title shot
man it not looking good for “hua”, he got shockout by forrest, who knows what chuck is going to do to him
only one thing i can say HOLY SHIT
I agree, I kept blogging Tito vs Shogun, but this is the best scenario. Tito looks like he’s too pre-occupied and his getting further and further away from the actual fight game. The Shogun rumor for UFC in April was throwing me off on who he would go against. YOu know Chuck’s Dana’s boy and will set him up for a rematch, long before giving Jardine a title shot. The winner of Tito vs Machida I see would go against Jardine, then the winner there would go against the winner of the title fight after Rampage vs Griffin, via after the facing the winner of Chuck vs Shogun. The LHW div is STACKED!!
Winner of Bonnar vs Hamill, go against winner of Alexander vs. Irvin for a top 5 position. The UFC needs to set up on their website the contender rankings.
Why is the WWE website promoting Mir vs. Lesnar? Didn’t Lesnar sue WWE?? I guess it must be an agreement between McMahon and White. UFC is using highlights from WWE as well? I just don’t want to see the UFC become like the WWE by having pay per view monthly, but their starting to be. Pay per views ought to be for only championship, #1 contender, and grudge matches,…not “Debut’s”, unless is vs a Top 5 contender and is in the mix for a title shot. Have more UFC Fight Nights, for better exposure for these fighters, and that will make the pay per views worth watching.
very interesting i could see them moving shogun fight out, watch they will add the ed herman fight to the card, but i doubt they will fight in may maybe in july or even august but for them to fight in may with sherk fight, tito fight, and evans it would be really stacked, but hey shogun vs lidell in england live on spike tv sounds good too
Chuck Liddell Vs Shogun! man…why don’t they have this fight in Canada…. Shogun was rumoured to be on the canadian card….
after losing to griffin, shogun fights liddell??? WEIRD
I hope Chuck wins. I like Rua, but I have been saying since before his debut in UFC, that he is argualby the most overrated fighter.
If Chuck figths like he did against Wandi, he should have it in the bag I think.
Chuck will win this one no problem at all
And is it just me or does it always seem like the most stacked div. (LHW) is always the one that moves the slowest? (On hold with the TUF show)
This is really smart. Nobody would want to see a Chuck/Rampage 3 after the way he lost their 2nd fight.
Not unless Chuck beats the two men who blew through Rampage….That sets it up well.

I but I would rather see RAMPAGE fight the two guys that blew by Rampage, not Chuck, I mean Rampage is the defending champ after all. You’r scenario ain’t bad though.
If Shogun is back in his old form, everyone is gonna be real surprised here.

Good point, but don’t forget Vitor is coming back!
the winner of shogun chuck is deserving of a title shot
rampage needs to face both wanderlei and shogun to avenge losses
chuck got caught in the 2nd rampage fight
to say a guy who has carried the company for years and is the biggest star doesnt deserve a title shot after just beating the long running pride champion and also the guy who was widely considered prides best 205 is crazy
chuck should definitely be right back in the title frame 2nd rampage fight was a lucky punch
maybe chuck didnt train properly
but the loss was still due to a single punch connecting
he wasnt dominated for 5 rounds like say rich franklin did to david the crow loiseau or sylvia did to monson proving that they couldnt hang at the top
nor was chuck picked apart like andersson silva does to just about anyone in his path or in the way chuck gave tito a beatdown to the point where he doesnt want to fight again
plain and simple chuck is still the man and a win over shogun makes him #1 contender
i feel sorry for jardine who seems to not be in favour… as the win over chuck should of probably got him a fight with say wanderlei instead of chuck getting it with the winner getting a title shot
there really arent any other guys right at the top of the tree
machida and a few others *cough*JARDINE*/cough* could break into the bracket of true contenders id still put shogun wanderlei and dan henderson in there
the rest of the 205 division like tito rashad hamill are a long way back and would need a string of dominant victories over each other a couple over the top 5 to be worthy
forrest is slightly lucky to be getting a title shot now as i honestly wouldnt pick him over any of the other top 5 in singles matches
right time right place i guess
CHUCK rampage 3 would be a massive fight and i expect it to happen before the end of 2009 possibly the end of 2008

I’m pretty sure that it is just speculation at this point, and as of late, Vitor has not looked anywhere near a top contendar, I like him to, he really was a phenom, but everybody has there ups and downs.
Suck me BEAUTIFUL i just got a hard on I would love to see this fight if chuck won this he would have beatin two of the top 205 fighters in the WORLD and would cement his status as a lagend who never backed down and PLEASE GOD LET THIS BE ON THIS SIDE OF THE ATLANTIC
I’m not trying to sound like a hater, but why does Chuck get to fight in Las Vegas? Especially if it’s his trainer whose requesting it. BJ Penn had to fly to England from Hawaii. No matter what event is held in Vegas, it will sell tickets. So him drawing the fans in should not be an excuse. But anyway, this fight should be great.
No way he deserves a shot at the title that soon atleast one more win if he can even beat Shogun. Get the Dean of Mean some action for God’s sake he’s coming off the biggest win of his life!
If Rua has the right camp, he could take Liddel, but he needs the right camp.
Screw them!! Not fighting on the Canadian card sucks. This card went from kick ass name wise to a piece of shit. Yes I know GSP is on it and yes I know that UFC 80 was awesome with weak names but who cares…All the Canadians wanted Shogun on it and every other big time name that was talked about. My fellow Canadians don’t pretend that you didn’t want it that way. You’re all thinking the exact same thing. UFC way to enter Canada with a pussy card on paper.
If GSP loses, I have a feeling the arena is gonna be worse than a 1991 GnR concert with Axl pulling a no-show.
I hope Liddell kicks Shogun’s ass real bad!! As far as Jardine, give that guy a go with Wanderlei Silva!
i can’t wait to see chuck fight jardine again. that shit was an absolute fluke.

I can’t tell who you hate more, Chuck or Rua, but you state Chuck will lose, all he can do is beat over teh hill guys, then go on and say Rua was punked by Forrest, doesnt build up a strong case for Rua either.
I bet you’r one of the guys that thought Wandi would run over Chuck. Here you come again, CHuck will win, and you’ll say how over the hill Rua is, and that Chuck’s next opponent will kill him. Yada yada yada

No
Style wise this is a bad matchup for Shogun. I don’t see him getting in close or taking Liddell down. Standing up and banging Chuck clearly has an advantage there.
SHOGUN!!!!! my boy SHogun needs to step up his training BIG time if UFC is already giving him the best fighter

I know he’s Dana’s boy. That’s why Sherk is getting an automatic title shot too, its cuz he’s Dana’s boy. although I don’t see anyone better than Sherk to be the #1 contender.
I’m just glad they’re not wasting Shogun like they did Cro Cop. Maybe they learned from their mistakes… Forrest Griffin and Chuck Liddell; those are 2 awesome fights for Shogun.
I get so sick when I think about Mirko and fights w/ Arlovski, Sylvia, Couture, Vera but instead we got to see him wasted on Eddie Sanchez, Gonzaga and Chek Kongo.
I’m a Chuck hater, and I’ll obviously be rooting for Rua, but if the same Chuck comes out as last time, he’ll probably take it. Then again, who says the upsets have to stop with ‘07?
If Rua wins, he will finally get some hype from the casual fans.
I get so sick when I think about Mirko and fights w/ Arlovski, Sylvia, Couture, Vera but instead we got to see him wasted on Eddie Sanchez, Gonzaga and Chek Kongo.
Thats funny, usually people get sick when seeing CroCop get his head taken off by Gonzaga or nuts crushed by Kongo.
Wow, this has the makings of a superb fight! I hope Shogun can live up to half of his hype, if not I see Chuck beating him down and doing it in grand fashion. Chuck will win by KO in Vegas, baby!
chuck getting raped by rampage=UFC THE CHAPTER 3.at the end THIS SHIT happen remember that….CAM ON CHUCK.
ufc xxxx the SEASON 3 CHUCK GOT RAPED BY RAMPAGE = SHIT LIKE THIS HAPPEN….
Chuck “The Chutebox hunter” Liddell

How can you say silvia is over the hill? He is in his early 30s,ok has lost three in a row,but to top five fighters{at the time cro cop was]and was still 205 champ until last year,OVER HILL? Shogun got punked? The guy was billed as the number 2, 205lb IN THE WORLD on nearly every ranking before the forrest fight, and he lost fair and square and before you mention the knee injury look at it this way,if it was that fuckin bad he would have pulled out wouldn’t he,but no, nobody{probably including shogun and his team}gave forrest a chance and il be honest i didnt think he could do it ether unless he pulled a matt serra which he did. And good young fighters??????? RUA IS 26!!! WHAT DO YOU WANT SEVEN YEAR OLDS.And as for thiago silva or machida both with solid jujitsu games, Randy couture was the only man to take chuck down successfully and make him stay down because he is a wrestler,Sobral counldnt do it and he ranks pretty much around the same place as these guys in terms of ground skill maybe he is even better,so as for would they beat Chuck???AH………………….NO
Dam! i was wanting to see shogun do well – but thats out of the window now – HE’s FUCKED! if he takes this fight – this is the worst time any man should step in front of the iceman – Rampage should even be shiverin’ his timbers at the thought of the iceman coming for him. Shogun V Jardine makes much more sense – Jardine needs more top name wins on his record – he’d hammer shogun too!
shogun will be back to his normal self and take it to chuck. shogun by TKO (believe it!)
If Shogun goes back to chute boxe, the fight will very different. Plus who else noticed that shogun and ninja gassed at almost identical times in there last fight? Both Lacking the juice I think!! Plus this fight needs to happen in london, fed up with traveling all over the place.
SHOGUN!!!!! my boy SHogun needs to step up his training BIG time if UFC is already giving him the best fighter
As of now, Rampage is the best fighter in the LH Division, not Chuck.
dang, it makes me wonder how much a factor it will be with Shogun & Co. leaving behind Chute Boxe and making their own camp.
This is good news. I don’t think anyone wanted to see Chuck vs. Jardine II, at least not yet. As far as title implications go, I see Chuck standing in line behind Machida and Jardine. If Machida can beat Tito, he gets the next shot. Jardine needs to beat one more top five guy.
As someone who is attending UFC 83 I’m pretty bummed that he won’t be on that card anymore. I really hope they find a couple more solid fights to round out that card cause it’s not a great one when you put it beside 82 or even UFN 13.
Regardless…great potential matchup. I’m surprised they’d throw Shogun such a big opponent after losing to Griffin. I figured they’d give him a mediocre opponent to get him some momentum going into a title contenders match.

Fair or not, I dont see the UFC giving Machida a title shot yet.
Do I think he deserves it? probably…I just have a feeling they wont give it to him. 205 is the best division that the UFC has, from an excitement stand point. Although Machida is very good, he isn’t ha;f as entertaining as other guys at 205.
If they were setting him up for a title shot, I think they would have matched Machida vs. Jardine..winner gets behind Forrest in line for a shot at Rampage. Not having those 2 face off gives me the feeling that the UFC is hoping another contender emerges….The Icemen. If they set Shogn vs. Chuck, it means that the UFC is hoping Chuck beats him and then they can give him a rematch vs. Rampage, justifying it by saying he just beat 2 chutebox guys in a row who destroyed Rampage a combined total of 3 times….
Whats gonna happen when my boy Shogun, messes that whole plan up, and takes chuck out?
this fight makes perfect sense, the winner should get a title shot, although the only way Shogun should get one is if he destroys Liddell which will not happen, anywho if chuck comes in and looks like his previous fight or even better there is no doubt that the loss to rampage he got caught and the loss to Jardine he was not hymself which still puts him as the #1 contender beat both guys that beat the shit out of the champ not just a one punch like rampage did to liddell but an ass whopping with punches kicks and knees. i think if Liddell wins he definetly deserves a shot although then you still have ppl like machida, thiago trailing behind.

Which will be the most likely result..Shogun coming off his UFC debut loss..a fighter that was not questioned in being the number 1 205′r in the old..won owns a nice res..is like 10 yrs younger then his elder opponnent.
Shogun will not only beat Chuck..but IMO..will bust him up.
I loved shogun, but I’ve come to the conclusion he was overrated.. I think chuck will beat him..
I love Shogun, but can he handle Chuck’s punches and get him to the ground. Chuck has proven vulnerable to the leg kicks, if Shogun could utilize kicks and get a take down, he could win, but a failed take down could equal a knockout.

I think so to Phil. Before gassing Shogun was bustin Forrest up. The cardio and fatigue set in and Forrest took over. I still didnt forget that elbow Shogun split Forrests forehead open with….It was nasty.
Chuck on the other hand had an impressive win over a GAME wanderlei. Anyone notice that chuck has gone 3 fights in a row without Knocking someone out? IMO Wanderlei tried too hard to give the fans a good show, and just brawl with chuck instead of doing what he usually does to beatdown tough opponents…The tai clinch, and Shogun neglected to use it as well. I dont think that will be the case next time they fight, I expect both chute box alumni to bust the tai clinch out there arsenal and go to work on their next opponents. Chuck had a big size and reach advantage against wanderlei, he wont enjoy that luxary against Shogun.
Either way it will be a great fight. Shogun good cardio = trouble for anyone!

Vitor is a joke. He was tough against the Scott Ferozo’s of the world but if he doesn’t KO you in the first 2 minutes he gives up. He’s got a chicken heart.
I think Chuck matches up well with Shogun. If Chuck can keep his distance and avoid the clinch, he’ll be able to offset Shogun’s strength, which is his Muay Thai. Shogun has to utilize his kicks to gain the advantage in striking. If Shogun can land his kicks consistantly, he will be able to pull Chuck into the clinch and start landing knees. I don’t really see either guy going for the takedown. Chuck is a better wrestler and Shogun has better BJJ, but I think both would prefer to keep it standing.
I think this would be a great fight. I can see either guy winning, but I will be pulling for Chuck.
Look people…just face it…Over-rated Chucky only wants to fight Shogun b/c he saw Forrest destroy him and Chucky only fights guys he knows he can beat up on…he fights either washed up losers (silva) or punks…He thought he could beat up on Jardine but he got slapped around…served him right.
Dear Crocop,
Please drop to 205 (a more sensible weight class) and fight Chuck Liddell…
Regards

Andy: I think that they both match up well with each other. I can agree with all your statements, except I think that Shogun will go for takedowns. Even when Shogun has huge striking advantages over his opponents on paper, he still takes them down. I think Shogun enjoys G n’ P and working submissions. I dont know if he will get chuck down, I suspect he will be able to…Chuck has work class takedown defense but Shogun was taking Forrest down before gassing, and forrests takedown defense isn’t that bad at all. Forrest is alos bigger and stronger then chuck.
IMO, this would be an excellent fight. I feel that the winner of this fight will get a crack at the title, which is probably unfair to Machida and Jardine, but I think the UFC is hoping Chuck can get past shogun because Chuck is getting old and they probably want to see him have 1 last title rain. I think thats a dumb idea by the UFC because I dont think Chuck can get past Shogun and Rampage in back to back fights…Then again why would I ever complain about seeing one of my personal dream match ups between Shogun and Liddell. I will admit that Machida and Jardine are getting stiffed in the process because they probably should have been fighting each other one for #1 contender for the title after Rampage fights Forrest.
Future fights booked at 205
Machida vs. Tito
Rashad vs. Tiago
Alexander vs. Irving
if Chuck fights Shogun it will probably leave Jardine to fight wanderlei or Sokoudjou, most likely wanderlei.
Shogun confirms June match up with the Iceman!
translation:
In the high-way to the Rosa Beach in Santa Catarina, where he will spend the holidays with his wife, Mauricio Shogun confirmed to TATAME his fight with Chuck Liddell in June. “I confirmed that fight yesterday, everything is set for June and I hope to fight well and represent my new team, the University of Fighting (UDL)” said Shogun, who hopes to avenge his friends loss.
“For sure I will avenge Wanderlei” assured the athlete who wants to do go to America and train there sometime with Wanderlei. “I called Wanderlei and we talked a lot, we will do the exchanging for sure, I don’t know when, it all depends with my strategy of the fight”
“Liddell has good boxing and a very good Wrestling. His game is more stand-up, so it can be a mistake to try to take him down all the time, because it demands too much energy. I will still plan my best tactic with my coach Alejo Morales (note : against Forrest he had no game plan), with my brother and the rest of the team. But I can strike with Liddell and beat him there, no problem.

This is all a setup for a huge card for UFC 90, Rampage vs. Chuck 3, would be the biggest hyped match, thats if they both win their next matches??? The Dec card always has to be the biggest of the year.

yeah I read that too, I’m a huge shogun fan, but his new camp name is just… ehrr… they should have been more creative.
Shogun
good cardio = trouble for anyone!
I have nothing to add to this subject.
No way he deserves a shot at the title that soon atleast one more win if he can even beat Shogun. Get the Dean of Mean some action for God’s sake he’s coming off the biggest win of his life!
I know man. I mean Rampage was so deserving of his hot the last time….Right???
AWWW YES ANOTHER SWEET WIN FOR CHUCK AGAINST THE CHUTE BOX CAMP
i go to londo….Shogun Is the best fighter…with griffin???did you see Griffin´s face after the fight??was veeery bad…shogun was like new…he win by submission but..he had fortun..believe me
John is going to get knocked out first round. Common sense tells me if i through a kick at someones head and they throw a punch ima hit them and they will collapse to the floor, but then again UFC fans arent exactly bright. Anyways IF shogun wins he gets a rematch with Jackson after Jackson knocks forrest senseless.
wtf i put chuck damn people editing my text!
I really have alot of respect in liddels fighting he goes in the octagon and lets it all explode and i think that he will beat shogun.Well should say handing shoguns ass to him well i also think if had another title shot against rampage jackson he would finnally give him the ass kicking chucks been waiting to give him.And once again be light heavy weight champ chucks the best.
wtf i put chuck damn people editing my text!
Ya eh!wtf chucks the best damn light heavy weight fighter in the world today and always will be
