“… in this fight it looks like I’m going to be able to use a lot of half guard and closed guard maneuvers, because that’s his style. And no matter what training he’s done, even if he tries to throw punches and back up to use his wrestling to counter my takedowns, eventually he’s going to take me down…. Definitely a finish cause that’s the only way I’m going to win. I’m not going to out-wrestle Lesnar for 15 minutes and put him on his back and hold him down. So for me to win I either have to take his arm or neck, or knock him upside his head.”
– Frank Mir offers up a realistic assessment via MMAWeekly.com on his upcoming heavyweight bout with Brock Lesnar at UFC 81: “Breaking Point” this Saturday, February 2, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. This actually seems dead on in a fight that seems damn near impossible to predict an outcome.

lesnar all the way!!!
Sounds like he knows exactly what he has to do to win…now lets see him do it. I still think it’ll be hard to slap on a submission on Lesnar cause of his size and strength but I think Mir can catch him. He’s too well versed on the ground and I don’t believe Lesnar can learn what it takes to difuse Mir’s strengths in the amount of time he’s been in MMA. It’s almost impossible to predict a winner here…too many unknowns.
Will Sable and Paul E Dangerously be leading Brock to the ring?
I’ve been a Lesnar fan since he first stepped into a WWE ring. I can’t wait to see this fight. I was kinda hoping to see him fight a can in his debut, but him stepping up against a former champion in Mir will be a great test. I got Brock winning by vicious ground and pound in the 1st round. If Marcio Cruz destroyed Mir on the ground in half guard, just imagine what Lesnar could do!
Mir, please surprise me.
I think Mir will win it. It’s too easy for a newb to get caught by a Brazilian jiu-jitsu move. If you’re not ready for all his tricks it will be over before you know it. And Mir is plenty strong enough to arm-bar Brock.

Adu dhabi champion, and 2nd or 3rd degree black belt in bjj is more dangerous on the ground than a ncaa champion…not to mention that was mirs first fight back and he was way more out of shape than he will be for this fight…still i see your point, Cruz’s wrestling is probably the worst in the sport..I think this fight may be comparable to diego and Kosckecks 1st fight on tuf (without the cardio)..wresting hs state champion with bb in bjj vs ncaa champion still wet behind the ears…diego had his way with Koscheck even though he was the inferior wrestler, he was better at all other aspects of mma…only Koschekc made a fight out of it but he didnt have to deal with a big variable that Lesnar has to…octagon shock…i predict and hope for Mir to win arm bar first round…i think lesnar can be really good in the future, but in the first round mir will be a bad style macth for him..if it goes past the first, who knows how much gas either of them will have

Mania, I have a quetion
If I made a stencil of MMA Mania and put it on my sprawl shorts to advertise for your site would you be pissed off. lol.
Im an ameture fight with a couple of fights under my belt and it would bring me nothing but joy to sport your website on them.
Amature
Lesnar has been training MMA for about two years now. I think he’s learned enough BJJ to be able to avoid the obvious subs. And he has exceptional cardio, not one of Mir’s strengths, to keep the match at a fast pace. My prediction as of right now, keeping in mind that it is likely to change by tomorrow, is that Lesnar controls from top position for the whole first round, lands a few shots and avoids Mir’s subs. Mir gasses in the second, and Lesnar finishes with some nasty GnP.
Mir is a true ground fighter. Not just a college wrestler. Many wrestlers have become great fighters but it took time and growth.(i.e. kos) Been a Mir fan since he shoulder locked little pete williams so i’m biased but a brute wrestler is fodder for powererful JJ. Brock will come in full on, get the take down, try to push off for space and BOOM! submission via arm bar mid 1st. Don’t care how big and strong you are, once its locked your tapping. Just ask Hong Choi.
Hong Choi??? Are you kidding???
If Mir comes back in shape and serious, which it looks like he is, I’m taking Mir. Lesnar is huge and a great wrestler, but there are a few super strong wrestlers in MMA who have had to add a lot more to their game to make it in MMA. Trying to take down a guy who is kneeing you in the head as you shoot is a different game. MMA=MIXED Martial Arts. NOT wrestling or kick-boxing or jiu-jistu or boxing or or or etc.

I like this assesment and believe that as long as Mir doesn’t get caught with any big shots-he will be taking an arm, shoulder lock, or triangle choking him to sleep. Mir is just a little smaller then Nog, Sapp is bigger then Brock, and Nog sunk in the arm bar so did Fujita(and he is only 6′). i am curious to see how a near 50 lb weight cut is going to effect Brock in the ring and with his size.
Lesnar by flying legdrop from top of octagon.

I dont know man, when Mir fought Sylvia (Sylvia was like 20-0 at the time, with more than a couple years bjj experience) h epredicted right when the fight goes to the gorund it will be over in less than 1 minute…and thats exactly what happend..i dont care how strong you are, if you get a guy as strong as mir on your are or leg with his leverage and knowledge there is no way to muscle out, and you will need more than a couple years of submission training..lesnars best chance is some big slam that will stun mir for a second and allow him to get good position..if he is in mirs gaurd hi is in trouble
apparently i tried typing that with my elbows sorry
We’ll need to find out how good is Brock’s jaw. Does Brock have a neck to choke?
BTW, there is NO WAY that Mir can sink in a choke. You have to have a neck to get choked out.

Mir should empty a pillowcase full of thumbtacks on the floor of the octagon right at the start of round 2.
mir is so washed up.that why ther giving him brock.
I don’t know…at first glance and my gut reaction after reading Mir’s comments is that there is a hint of doubt.

No in the middle it of Brocks going to get a little help from his friend Kurt Angle and he will jump into the cage and then they will call each other jabronies at which point and someone will body slam one of the ring girls and then mir will get hit with a chair and then it will just go down hill from there.End result WWE all over again. God forbid.
Every where I look its Frank Mir and Brock….I cant wait to get this stupid event over with so we can move on to premier mma fights…UFC 82!!!!

I hear ya. I really don’t have much more to offer to this fight. Its not going the distance. Most, if not all of the fight will take place on the ground. Mir will be on his back. He can win by submission, or Brock can win by GnP. I see it ending no other way. UNLESS they both change up their gameplan and stand toe to toe trading blows. However…… I doubt it.
I’m originally from Quincy(South Shore) but I live in Newton now. Anyways, I hope Mir wins.

That sounds about right, however, I think Mir survives and loses by decision.
Frank Mir: Please win this one…
I can’t stand fake wrestling and it’s fans…
At least after the days Iron Sheik, Ravishing Rick Rude, Junkyard Dog, etc…

You need to grow some thicker skin if you’re letting wrestling fanboys get to you.
It’s funny, the only thing that everybody talks about is what Frank Mir did to Tim Sylvia. Strange as it seems, the only thing I remember is what Brendan Vera did to Mir. With that said, Lesnar wins by almost killing Mir in the first round!
You got it all wrong. It’s Lesnar by Shooting Star Press off the top of the octagon.

LMFAO
but seriously, I can’t decide which I want to see more.. Mir to knock Lesnar upside his head or to rip his arm off… hmmm
I would like to see Mir break Lesnars arm like he did Tim’s since Lesner doesn’t think it was a big deal….

They might as well start this fight on the ground In Mir’s guard. How could anyone possibly have anything else to offer about this fight. Its been shoved down our throats more then wanderlei vs. Liddell. All I got to say is with all this hype surrounding Brock, his G n’ P better be the 2nd coming of Fedor’s cause the UFC is gonna get real bad press if this fight sucks.
mir is smart, he knows brock will probably get the takedown. so im guessing he trained extensively on subs
I Love Frank Mir
Brock Lesnar will get DQ’d forgetting that the F5 is not legal…maybe Jason Lambert can do a run in and hit Mir with a steel chair LOL
Wow, I’m impressed with Mir. He is being realistic and knows where his chances lie….
But this one is too close to call:
If it ends in the first round, I give it to Brock, otherwise I see Mir gettiing an arm bar from guard.
MY BUDDY SAW JEFF MONSON AT A PUB LAST NIGHT AND HE SAID JEFF MONSON HAD BEEN DRINKIN ALL DAY AND HE WAS SAYIN HE IS GOIN DOWN TO 205 TO FIGHT CHUCK LIDDELL FOR THE NUMBER 1 CONTENDER SLOT
Just heard that Belcher is off the ppv. He has some chest or throat sickness and cant go. Sucks I was looking forward to that fight. Atleast tyson should be on the main card now which is a good thing
Its confirmed on UFC.com now he has bronchitis and Rob Yundt will take his spot. Atleast someone is stepping in and fighting on 3 days notice.

Yep, this is a hard fight to call, really more of a guess. We have no other fights to compare to get an idea how this might go. I say Mir by arm bar, but who knows.

I doubt that meatball can make 205. Drinking all day def wont help get him there thats for sure
i say brock wins by visous thai clinch or who knows maybe f-5
4 words:

Chairs Match
Should be a great fight, IF Lesnar is all he’s cracked up to be.

Cruz is a knowledgable BJJ black belt–he did not make the mistakes that a relative novice, like Lesnar, would make to allow a submission.
I just heard Lesnar say this on the 81 special on Spike, “I had to learn how to box, I had to learn how to kick.”
Shit man!
THAT is why you need more than 1 minute of MMA action to fight in the UFC.
And he’s headlining?
Mir BETTER kick his newby ass!
What’s next? Hulk Hogan vs. Tank Abbott in UFC89?
The UFC must think we are a bunch of ass clowns for selling us an untested amature.
This is Bad news for (fake) prowrestleing and all pro wrestling organizations for lesnar making this move to the UFC.
All pro wresteling fans are going to be watching this fight to see how lesnar is able to perform, This could possibly be the most watched fight in UfC history because of all the noncasual mma fans this fight will attract. And once the people who were fans of prowrestleing see and soak in the UFC they will be hooked. And these people will wonder how the hell they wasted thier time watching roided up freaks hit eachother with chairs and scratch thier foreheads with wristbands for entertainment.

He must have been really drunk if he thought that he would be getting a shot at a #1 contender match at 205 anytime soon. Dont forget Monson vsl Liddell was probably the most boring fight I have ever seen Liddell take part in…why would they do it again? NOT a CHANCE IN HELL!
Hey mania, I am waiting for you to rename this site… Mir/LesnareMANIA.com
I think we’re all forgetting the history of mma….when there weren’t weight classes, remember Hoyce? Look at pride fighting..all I’m saying is that to even mention Lesnar’s size is so obvious, it is almost redundant to mention it. He is an exception wrestler but was he jacked on ‘roids back in NCAA? No..so any acclaim he has is diminished by the fact that he is now strapped with muscles and water inflated, ‘roid raging ones at that. Last UFC the African Assassin was up against Machida and everyone was saying ‘he’s a beast, he tosses full grown men around like boys (and he was training with Henderson I think!) and he was embarrassed by a more technical fighter.
This isn’t boxing where a bunch of skinny little guys jab from a distance and real fighters like De le Hoya get the shaft. MMA is the jewel of fighting sports because it is so versatile with so many styles. Mir could have wo.I horked on his cardio knowing how hyped this fight is. What do you all think, he was eating Cheetos? If he loses to a god damn WWE ‘blooperstar’ he will be a laughing stock so I have a hunch he was doing a little more than smoking pot and making youtube videos. Lesnar is in great shape, I admit…so was Kevin Randalman….nuff said. It will only take you so far and Mir won’t gas from trading a few blows but if they stand he has a chance to knock the crap out of Brock.
It’s all gonna come down to the game plan each of them takes. Will lesnar explode and risk the submission, or stand and wait for Mir to gas out? I saw Lesnar’s only fight and besides the fact he looked like he was fighting a young boy, he just over powered him…good for him, the fight was a joke. Mir is a big boy and the fight will be exciting.
Prediction 1: Brock’s camp is probably filling his head with crap, like Mir is at the end of his rope, Mir is tired and ‘Brock’s the future of MMA’…whatever…they trade a couple and Brock goes for the shoot and Mir puts the guillotine on and Brock drops, but gets his head out and gets the arm bar..
Prediction 2: Lesnor waits too long to shoot and takes a vicious high kick from Mir…
Prediction 3: Brock wins…does what everyone is saying and overpowers mir in every way…what can I say, ya can’t get ‘em all right!
