As my comrade " John " has slated in an article of his..check out how UFC handles Pride fighters. Look at the fighter's that got a warm up type match and the ones that got a tuf first fight in the UFC.
Warm up's
Anderson Silva
Rampage Jackson
Cro Cop ( who is the only one unsuccessful ) 1-2
Big Nog
No Warm up's
Shogun
Wandy
Sokoudjou
Look up some of Big Nog's Highlights. He is a beast.
in 30 fights he has "18!!!" submissions. After UFC 81..make it 19.
Silva got a warmup fight and has done well. Calling Jacksons first fight (to someone WHO BEAT HIM last time they met) a warmup is like calling Chucks 2nd fight against Page a warmup fight for Chuck. Nog hasn't done anything yet after his warmup. So, Silva is doing good after winning his warmup fight. Untill some of these other Pride fighter start winning,I think it's a little early to accept this theory based on Silva as the lone example.
Excellent logic Gord, looks like some are still trying to drag on the Pride/UFC debates. I was convinced there was an equal distribution of talent between the two, but after the influx of Pride fighters, I will have to say I might slightly favor UFC now. On top of everything, Pride was also way less regulated, as far as steroids and that.

Let me break it down. Noguerra's stand up is indeed better then Randy's. I think Tim will be more afraid to go to the ground with Noguerra then he was against Randy (and he was terrified against Randy). With that said, all Nog has to do is keep Tim off balance, mix it up between strikes and takedown defense, and I feel that he can out box him, or ju jitsu trip him to the ground (once he gets tim pressed against the cage). Randy provided the blueprint for Nog to beat Sylvia...If Nogguerra can just stick to the script he will win this fight.

By the way, Randy was able to get Tim's back, but couldnt do anything with it. If Nog gets Tim's back....it will be nighty night for the webfooted bandit!
That's what Monson thought too. Maybe Monson isn't as good as Nog, but he had NOTHING on Tim on the ground. Nog will also have trouble dealing with that big ape's size. Randy's striking was more effective than AA's against Tim. I can't see Nog teeing off on Tim's head as much as Randy did. Randy's supperior wrestling makes his striking more effective than Nogs, at least agaist Tim. I guess we will find out on saturday.
I agree gord. Randy's stand up is better. NOg just takes a punch good, that's it. And Tim's size will be an issue on the ground as well, like you said.

I was thinking about the HW division from the UFC's vantage point because I didn't understand the direction they were going in. Before Couture came out of retirement... Big Timmy was the champ after beating AA 2/3... pretty much taking AA out of the equation because we didn't want to see best 3/5. Adding CroCop and Nog and the emerging Vera and Kongo gave them more depth. When Couture came out of retirement to beat big Timmy, they were trying to set up a dream matchup between Couture and CroCop, but Gonzaga derailed that plan. Couture's resignation and not landing Fedor did not put the UFC in any worse position than they already were in before Couture came out of retirement. In fact, by their estimation, they are still ahead of where they were by still having Nog, CroCop, Vera, Kongo, and Werdum in their HW stable of fighters. Nobody can make a valid argument that they don't have the deepest HW division. However, the UFC can't say they have the #1 HW in the world until somebody holds the "interim" belt that hasn't been defeated by Randy or Fedor. Bring Bas Rutten out of retirement (half sarcasm).

sylvia isn't that slow. nog is actually kind of slow himself.

sylvia by decision more likely imo. I can't stand sylvia and hope nog wins, but if sylvia avoids the ground, or works good top with a lay and pray he should win. nog doesn't have to be knocked out to lose, just hurt enough that sylvia has an easy time outpointing him. nog would have an easier time working for a submission if sylvia was actually trying to finish the fight himself and that isn't very likely.
