Fighters are underpaid and the UFC does basically have a monopoly which doesn't leave much choice for a fighter, and if they do fight somewhere else the UFC blacklists them. Don't use sponsors as an excuse to defend the UFC because for the most part only the best fighters are getting any reasonable amount from sponsors and its still up to them to go out and find sponsors (especially a lesser known fighter). If one were to have 2 part time jobs, one employer can't dock your pay because you have an alternate source of income in the other job.

Now, I don't think the UFC would mind giving non-main event fighters a little more money as it doesn't really hurt their pockets very much at all and it could lead to a better product as fighters are able to train full time, get better trainers/coaches, etc. However, their main goal is to keep the headliners salaries in check, keeping them as far away from boxing type numbers as they can for as many years as they possibly can. Raising the salaries of these undercards would mean they would have to raise the salaries of the big names as well.
good comment automator, i got owned :)
lol.

I couldn't own anybody, I get gassed having a hot bath.

I never disrespect any of these fighters as it takes balls to walk into the octagon. I never say anybody is overpaid either, just underpaid.

The salaries need to be scaled properly i.e. like a point system for wins etc so that guys like Diaz can get top dollar and get top bills.

Look at Chuck vs Jardine fight($500,000.00 vs $14,000.00) thats not right. Not the Chuck pay but the sheer gap between their salaries.
Hey Guys,

I usually don't post much, but I really felt a need today. First; Diaz is overpayed? Are you kidding me?!

Automator, you must be a UFC newbie or you have a bad habit of shooting H before you post. Diaz not only won the TUF 5 contract, but he has one all of his fights in the UFC so far. And not only that--he's won all his fights by submission in the first or second round.

Being able to finish fights, being undefeated, and winning every fight in TUF 5 (which did not count to his record) warrants $30 000 at the very least.

This guy has ridiculous BJJ and his standup is very good; look out for him in '08.
Hi Nick,

Mate look back at my original post, I didn't say he was overpayed, I just wondered why he is paid the most especially as he wasn't top of the bill.

As for UFC newbie, nope, I just sit and read most times too. However, I do get lazy and read a portion of something before posting a response without reading things fully. Maybe something you are guilty of too?

Whoever thinks this is bad pay is out of their mind. First, it doesn't include bonuses or sponsor money. Second, none of these guys are main eventers yet. There is no reason to expect that a preliminary fighter who hasn't proven anything should be getting rich of the money I pay for PPV or my cable bill. Not yet at least.

When big sponsors and the major networks get involved, then the pay will increase. Still, it is possible to make a nice living basically acting like a teenager, fighting and training all day. That beats working on a construction site in the freezing weather or falling asleep in your cubicle.

MAKES NO SENSE KEITH JARDINE BEAT BEAT CHUCK AND GOT HOW MUCH ?!?!??! IT WAS ...
$28, 000
THat is stupid HOw does ELMer FUDD get PAID more THAn Keith Jardine???

UFC stinks..it tries to be a monopoly like the nfl or mlb but does not play "fair". there should be a ranking just like tema ssay in nfl just because lets say the gianats get more watches than the cougers or whatever...does not mean they should get paid less or FURTHERMORE win again and again and get apid less than others or!!
WIn WIn WIN and shold go to the finals only to have the team you beat
(KEith J. beating Forrest G.) only to have the 2nd place team go jump ahead of you and go for the title Forrest vs RAMpage.

please no-one say its because he on TUF
It's not because he was on TUF, it's because he won TUF. The whole premise of the show is that the winner gets a six figure contract. 4 fights X $30,000 = $120,000 which is low six figures.

As far as I'm concerned if you want to be a professional fighter skip the wife and kids and live cheap for 5 or six years until you've reached an higher paying tier. I only made about $20,000 a year the six years I put myself through college. When I got out and started getting paid I got a family. If your 35 and trying to make and got a bunch of mouths to feed tough. No one makes you become a professional fighter and no one forced you to have a family, so if you don't like it too bad. The UFC doesn't owe these guys anything more than what they negotiate on their contract.

And as far as a union goes; these guys can negotiate with any other organization that they like for more money. That's all the union they need.
'on' TUF was a typo which I corrected on the following post as 'won'

diaz did get the TUF contract, most likely gets paid more because of that
yes' that's exactly it, is every else knuckleheads or what... isn't it obvious?
way to point out the obvious, the guy won it by default.

I said "please don't say it was because he won TUF" (sarcasm).

The point I'm trying to make is why isn't he the main fight on the card if he is the highest earner?????

The top of the bill should earn the most.
I would say typically you are right, but this was only a fight night live, and not a pay per view, which are the ufc's big earners. burkman and swick really aren't main event material to be honest
