Ed Herman (14-5) and Demian Maia (6-0) are set to meet at UFC 83 on April 19 in a middleweight tilt at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, according to GracieMag.com.

Here’s a snip from Maia:

“I got back to Sao Paulo today; I was vacationing in California with my wife, where I also shot some Jiu-Jitsu dvds. I’ll be back at the UFC on March 8th to fight Ed Herman, who I don’t know, but my manager brought me a tape with some of his fights to analyze, but I haven’t had time to watch yet.”

Maia is a ridiculous Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner. In fact, he is the current Abu Dahbi Combat Club (ADCC) U87Kg Champion. During his Octagon debut at UFC 77: “Hostile Territory” in October 2007, Maia put on a grappling clinic against Ryan Jensen, submitting him via rear naked choke in round one.

Herman is on a three-fight win streak after recovering from back-to-back losses to start his UFC tenure. The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 3 185-pound finalist most recently avenged a loss from earlier in his career against Joe Doerksen at UFC 78: “Validation” in November 2007, knocking out “El Dirte” in he final stanza.

“Short Fuse” has five losses on his record and four of them come by way of submission. He’ll have to be real careful against a super talented jiu-jitsu threat like Maia if he wants to make it four wins in a row.

I think Herman will take this, he’s impressed me and has improved in his last couple of fights.

I disagree with who wins. I honestly think Maia will win. I saw him live just demolish Ryan Jensen, and man Maia looks phenominal on the ground. I think Maia might be the Frankie Edgar of this division. This fight WILL BE EXPLOSIVE.

Why couldn’t this fight be at UFC 82!?

Maia is going to win and I predict a serious run at the title after that. This guy is a real force in any division, much more so a weak one.

Most of you UFC fans don’t follow BJJ, but let me tell you… Demian is one of the best BJJ guys on the planet. The guy choked out Gonzaga and holds a win over Jacare.

Herman goes for takedowns in almost everyone of his fights and almost gets subbed in every fight. Demian is going to school his ass on the ground and I wouldn’t be suprised if he puts Herman on his back

I hope Maia does big things in the MW division. It’s odd that there has not been more talk about him in the UFC.

Hopefully we will see Maia vs Lutter at some point. If Lutter comes in at 100% that would be a great match.

DOM: You’re absolutely right. The common fan will be rooting for Herman and might even think he has the advantage. I bet he (like Jensen) will be subbed pretty easily. Although I will be rooting for Ed, I dont think he stands much of a chance.

maia could seriously beat anderson silva.. but herman is very athletic and a good wrestler so maia will probably be on his back..

While this has some truth as far as who the common fan will be rooting for, BJJ phenoms don’t always fair well against good MMA fighters. We’ve seen it with guys Roan Carneiro, Marcelo Garcia (probably the best BJJ Player in the world)and Jacare (who has lost one of his fights. Far too many BJJ guys have their game neutralized by good all around fighters. Ed Herman has very good ground skills and good standup. Anything can happen in this fight.

Its hard to do submissions on someone when your getting hit in the face even worse when its off the best striker in the bis

I am the first to admit when I dont know much about a fighter. I dont know much of Meia. From what I hear is ju jitsu is on another level. Some of you r fight analysis’s were interesting. As some of you pointed out Herman takes all his fights to the ground and does always “almost” gets caught in a submission. You guys are saying Maeia beat Jacre and if thats true, Herman will be in trouble if it goes to the ground. Herman’s stand up as made small strides, just earning his 1st KO over willy old vet Joe Doerkson. I know nothuing about Maeia’s stand up so I cant offer much of an analysis on this one.

Either way, I am excited about another middleweight in the UFC who you fans are saying is good. I will take your word for it.

PHILQNY: u r a grappling guy, get on here and offer some insight and school me on Maeia!

The only constant thing I’ve seen from Ed Herman is that he has a ridiculously high and inflated opinion of everything about himself, from his fighting to his ginger-suave style. Ed is going to lose a limb in this one.

I know enough about grappling/bjj to say that Meia is nasty, but as icefish said before, its hard to pull of subs when you’re getting punched in the face. Like I said before, the transition to MMA is not always good for grapplers….Marcelo Garcia has moved down to FL to train with ATT, he’s arguably the best BJJ player in the world, but his MMA isn’t so hot. I’m not saying that’s the case with Meia, but you have to be well rounded in all aspects to be dangerous. If Herman can keep himself out of Meia’s slick subs, which he may be able to since he’s pretty slick himself, he may be able to pound out a victory or get a KO.

Thanks JN, Do u know anything at all about his stand up, becAUSE IF HE COMES IN WITH WEAK aLBERTO cRANE stand up, then he better be able to take Herman down, because if he lacks power and stand up, Hermabn may choose to keep the fight on its feet.

So the big Questions are about:
His Stand up?
Hit Toughness?
His takedowns? he doesnt have to worry about take down defense because it Sounds like Herman would be doing him a favor if he took him down. On the other hand as you pointed out, pulling off submissions is a different story when some one is dropping elbows on your face.

It will to come own to toughness. Cause Herman is a grueling fighter. Can Meia be tough enough to eat elbows and still pull off a submision…..lets find out.

I just hope he becomes a good middleweight fighter cuase we all know that division is desperate for some fighters

Shortfuse has improved dramatically as an all round fighter….He is stronger than people realize and has the heart of Lion…this kid is mentally tough…no doubt of self…a key ingrediant to the successful fighter which can easily be perceived as arrogance…should be a great fight…Ed will win this fight…bank on it…will be a good show

Ed Herman is a great wrestler, and his striking is technically sound enough to almost cover up his lack of true power. He could probably pick Maia apart standing, but I just don’t see either of these guys letting the fight stay on the feet. Demian’s jits is fucking crazy. I’ve seen his fights, and his ADCC tapes are a clinic. But more so, his instructional DVDs are the real testament. He’s got it all, old-school jits, rubber guard, and is extremely fluid and aggressive with his submission attempts. No way Short Fuse takes him lightly here, but I still see him underestimating him. I highly doubt Herman’s rolled with anyone of Maia’s caliber, as there are maybe 5 people in the world as technically sound. I can’t wait to DVR this fight, as I predict a clinic.
