UFC 84 mac danzig vs mark bocek
Mac Danzig (17-4-1) — the welterweight winner of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 6 — will make his lightweight debut inside the Octagon against Mark Bocek (5-1) at UFC 84 on April 19 in Montreal, Canada, according to FightNetwork.com.

Danzig snapped a two-fight losing streak when he made his Octagon debut, defeating Tommy Speer at the TUF 6 Finale on December 8, 2007, to capture the TUF 6 welterweight crown. The PETA poster boy announced during his post-fight interview that he intended to compete at lightweight (155 pounds) going forward.

That decision pits him against Bocek — a Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist from Canada with two UFC fights already under his belt. He has one win (unanimous decision) over Doug Evans at UFC 79: “Nemesis” and one loss (technical knockout) to Frank Edgar at UFC 73: “Stacked.”

Not surprisingly Bocek is another Canadian who adds more Canadian flavor to the Canadian card. To check out the most recent UFC 84 fight card click here.

What a test. Another great match from the TUF school of matchmaking. This should last all of about 2 minutes. If it takes longer for Mac to win I will be shocked.

THE UFC MIGHT BE TRYING TO BUILD HIS CONFIDENCE UP AND GIVE HIM CANS HIS FIRST FEW FIGHTS!

They need the TUF fighters to win at least a few fights right off. Otherwise it creates the perception among the general public that the TUF contestants are just reality TV stars, not legitimate fighters. That perception would hurt future TUF ratings and diminish casual interest in UFC, each of which would cost the UFC money.

Bocek fought arguably one of the best lw in Edgar and beat a tough opponent in Evans (who gave Huerta a run). You can’t call him a can. It’s unbelievable some of the comments on here - Bocek is a phenomenal bjj fighter. Nothing against Danzig - he looked great and I’ve been watching him for awhile, but Bocek is no slouch.

This guy is big at 170 he is going to be massive at 155 man what a loss at 170, but that division is pretty stacked with talent… maybe a good choice.

New Gsp Interview: 2 major points
Just heard an interview with GSP on CKAC ( Montreal FM station )

2 major point

1. Nothing is official as for an April UFC event in Montreal, he said that UFC maybe looking for UK event in APRIL. UFC event in Montreal can happened in May or June.

2. HE still had in the back of his mind when Serra called him ‘ FRENCHY ‘ and should go back to Quebec watching Hockey. He says that he won’t comment nothing on Serra till the fight but will let his fist do the talking when he’ll have him in front of him.

That’s right, who do you expect the UFC to match Mac up with in his first fight, the loser of Penn/Stevenson? I mean c’mon. Plus this match isn’t that much of a ‘give-me’ match. Like Seamus said, Bocek is not the worst fighter in the LW division. It’s not like he is fighting another John Kolosci…

If/once Mac is able to get a couple of wins under his belt inside the octagon, he will get his chance to fight the big dogs, just like the previous winners of TUF. Forrest, Diego, Joe Stevenson, Rashad Evans, and even dare I say Michael Bisping - only since his fight was a quote un quote “main event”… Last season’s winner, Nate Diaz, has only had 1 fight so far, and that was against Junior Assuncao. I would take Mark Bocek in a fight against Junior.

Mac is a big wolve..the biggest wolf of the tuf season 6..why not have him fight another big wolve off the bat..marketing him is what the ufc wants to do..Dana say’s we want to give the fans the best fights out there..for Mac is this the best match for him..not to take nothing away from the Canadian..but I would of matched him up with..Nate Diaz..Clay..Edgar..somebody that presents a big threat to Mac.

I think this fight will last a lot longer than people think. Bocek looked good in his fight against Evans last month, definitely surprised me for sure as I thought Bocek wouldn’t be able to survive against a decent wrestler.

This fight is going to end up going to the ground where Bocek can definitely hang with Danzig. It should be interesting.

you all gotta be joking, mac won the TUF because all the others were rookies, but he is not that great fighter, and bocek is not the best in the world, but he is solid, I pick bocek to be the favorite.

Why some Pride fighters didn’t do well in their first(few) fights. They can’t fight and move like they did in the ring. Octagon is so much bigger and it doesn’t have corners. It’s worst for fighters like Cro Cop and Shogun who used corners and smaller size of the ring effectively in their fighting strategy/style.

Kenny Florian talks about the Joe Lauzon fight…shares his thoughts on Penn-Stevenson

http://www.fighthype.com/pages/content1681.html

“I think Joe Lauzon is a great fighter. He’s come a long way and he’s improving all of the time. I’ve been watching him since he was a kid in the grappling competitions. It’s cool to see him rise the way he’s risen, but I knew, for some reason, we were going to have to face each other at some point. I didn’t think it would be this early. I’m going to be ready and I’ve been training hard all of the time. I’m sure he’s going to be training hard. He’s been training with BJ. A lot of people see him as a possible champ down the line in the future and I know I’m going to have my hands full. He’s not an opponent that I’m going to take lightly. He’s beaten Jens Pulver, he beat another guy at a local fight here and he beat Mike Brown, who he wasn’t supposed to beat. I’m not going to take him lightly, that’s for sure. I’m going to be ready to fight and I’m going to be ready for a war.”

“Yeah man! I’m ready to use it all when I have to. I can show, once again, a little bit of a different side again and I’m going to be ready to unload and do what I have to do to get the job done against Joe. Regardless of how long the fight lasts, I think it’s going to be a scrap. We’re both going to be trying to get positions and get the better of the stand-up. It’s going to be a war. Every second that fight lasts, it’s going to be a war. The style he has, the style I have, we both don’t like giving up an inch. We’re both aggressive and technical fighters. I think it’s going to be a great fight.”

“That’s always been my mentality since the first time I started doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. That has always been my motto, even competing back then; finish the fight, finish the fight! I think that the true measure of a champion, of a fighter and a mixed martial artist, is to have the ability to finish. You look back at the Samurai culture or any type of war culture…it wasn’t how many stabs you got on the other guy or a referee comes in and says you stabbed him more times than he stabbed you or you shot him more times than he shot you so this guy won; no, it’s either you kill him or he killed you. I think that’s the purity of combat and the ultimate of combat and I think that’s what I look to do every single fight and I think Joe Lauzon knows that as well and he fights that way too. Someone is getting finished in this fight, that’s for sure.”

“Everyone looks at BJ’s talent and what he could do on the mat with his hands, his wrestling ability and his balance, but we’ve seen it before. The best fighter doesn’t always win, especially in mixed martial arts. Anything can happen and BJ has had some problems in the past with his cardio. I don’t think it will be a problem this time around, but you never know. That fight could potentially start in the 3rd round. If Joe Stevenson can weather those first 2 rounds, he can come back strong and steal it in the 3rd, 4th and 5th, a lot like Jens Pulver did way back when, but I think BJ is a monster right now and you do have to give him an edge, but by no means is Joe “Daddy” out of this at all. He’s in the best shape of his life and he’s been training for a while now. He’s been in Big Bear taking this very seriously so you won’t see me bet on that fight for anyone.”

Can? Bocek did not look good vs Edgar, but looked good against Evans. Danzig isn’t the striker that Edgar is. I see it somewhere in between the Edgar and Evans fights.

I agree here. Good 1st test for Danzig and a bit of a chance for redemption for Bocek. I think Mac takes it by sub late.

WHAT???? Did I read that correctly?

“Danzig isn’t the striker that Edgar is.”

Mac is a MUCH better striker than Frankie Edgar in my opinion. Frankie is a great fighter, but he will be the first to admit, that he is still primarily a wrestler, that is learning MMA. Where as Mac Danzig is a well rounded fighter, and always has been (his bjj MIGHT be the best part of his game). If rules were set and the fight HAD to stay standing, I would take Mac Danzig over Frankie Edgar about 9 out of 10 times.

Bocek should enter the ring with a fur coat made of kittens and puppies while licking a raw steak. THAT ought to make Danzig mad enough to throw him off his game.

VM, if you watch the Edgar/Bocek fight you will see that Edgar controlled and pretty much setup the ground game with strikes standing. While I agree Danzig is a better rounded fighter, he uses standup to close, clinch and takedown. I disagree with the idea that if the fight HAD to stay standing Danzig wins 9 of 10 and IMO in a UFC fight, I will take Frankie to handle Danzig.
