Canadian middleweight fighters Jason MacDonald (19-9) and Joe Doerksen (39-11) are slated to compete against one another during the first-ever UFC show to be held north of the U.S. border, UFC 84, on Saturday, April 19, according to RDS.ca.
The pay-per-view (PPV) event is expected to take place at the The Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.
MacDonald has lost two of his last three fights inside the Octagon since emerging in early 2006 with submission wins over Ed Herman and Chris Leben, earning him the self-proclaimed nickname, “The TUF Killer.” Those two most recent losses, however, came to two of the top contenders in the division, Rich Franklin and Yushin Okami.
“El Dirte” is an experienced fighter who has been competing under the UFC banner off-and-on since 2004. He will look to end a two-fight losing skid. Doerksen challenged Paulo Filho for the WEC 185-pound belt in August 2007 and was stopped via technical knockout (strikes). Three months later he took on Ed Herman at UFC 78: “Validation” and was knocked out in round three.
This will be a rematch — MacDonald and Doerksen first met up at an Ultimate Cage Wars (UCW) show in 2005 at the Winnipeg Convention Center. “The Athlete” came away with the win, submitting Doerksen via rear naked choke in round four.

Boooooooooooooring….
come on give mcdonald a challenge for christ sake,
I guess 185 is just SO weak they have nothing to give…
Whoa Whoa Whoa….Doerkson is not a free pass. He is a proven fighter that took his last fight against Herman in 7 days notice. He looked a little sloppy against for that reason…having to make weight, lack of prep etc.
If Doerskon won, i would not be suprised one bit. Macdonald better be careful here.
Just another example of the UFC protecting UFC UK poster boy Mike Bisping (who i like actually).
I was really hoping for Bisping Vs. Jmac in Montreal.
Doerkson should be fighting someone a little bit further down the ranks in MW. Like David Terrell (WHO NEEDS to return).
I’d rather see a Canadian fight someone from somwhere else.
I don’t like brazilian v. Brazilian, or american v.american. etc. At least not until somebody breaks into the top 5 and it can’t be helped. National rivalries sell and they give you somebody to root for when your not in love with the guys in the octagon. This is a very weak argument, in a perfect world i suppose.
MANIA? Any idea? or have i missed the posting for who Bisping is fighting next or when/where???
thanks

Dude, Doerkson is about as easy as …
Need to get more people moving to MW, this is brutal waiting for a title fight to actually see something worth while in this division.
Bisping vs JMAC would be more exciting the Joe vs JMac and I am Canadian. I guess they are trying to appease the Canadian fans. Should be a not bad fight but it will be a grappling match.
What ever happen to THE CROW…???? man now that would be a fight…..
The Crow used to be one of my favorite fighters. They should bring him back, he was good stuff for the most part.
Wasn’t his last fight against Franklin for the belt like 2 years ago…. I still think this guy would bring some really good blood into an already lacking division… Man middleweigt is looking kind of bad lately…..
we won’t be seeing the crow in the ufc probably ever again.
Yeah kind of a crappy fight for J-Mac, but regardless, i’ll watch it.
CROW VS TANNER!!! that would be cool

Like the article says, he has lost two of his last three fights, to Rich Franklin and Yushin Okami. That’s arguably numbers 3 and 4 in the division (with Silva/Henderson as 1/2, or dare I say 1a and 1b). I have no problem with matching Jmac up with Doerkson. Jmac needs to get some wins under his belt to build his confidence back up.
He exploded on the scene a year back with the wins over Leben and Herman. Then since the MW division was so weak, he was immediately tossed to the big dogs.

I agree with you VM.
VM, I will give you the 3 being Franklin, but after Okami’s last performance I do not believe he could be 4 and if so than damn this division is worse than I thought. Also as far as the 1a and 1b is concerned are we all forgeting the total domination of HEnderson by Rampage. I mean the guy didn’t even make Quinton sweat. It was and well if they were still around would be a disgrace to the Pride Organization.. I hope he gives Anderson a fight. The only one who has even tried is Franklin and if Leben wouldn’t lead with his chin might have lasted longer……

Rampage himself would argue with you there.
A middle weight fighter went 25 minutes with Rampage and didn’t even come close to being finished in the fight.
Somebody that didn’t watch PRIDE would possibly question Henderson getting a shot at Anderson, but anyone that watched even a bit of PRIDE know of Hendo and knows what he is capable of. And that is ending a fight at any given moment with a right hand. Also, he has fought against anyone, including HW’s and he has NEVER been KO’d.
I wanna see this fight, both very competant fighters. JOe better pounce on him quick and hit hard, or JMac will JJ his ass, probably rear-naked choke.

The crow is DEAD, forget all about him. Since his loss to ritch franklin he has yet to mentally recover and has turned what was once a pretty good fighter, into a middleweight Tim Sylvia! Dont u guys follow mma?

ViolentMike: How about hendo’s left hook? the left hook has turned just as leathel as his right straight. Dan has to be one of everyone’s fighters, if not they just don’t know the sport! I love the way Dan looks down towards his opponents feet while throwing those big punches….Wild but very intelligent technique!

Dudes..I like Henderson pushing forward..head down and coming over the top trying to take your head..i remember when he fought Renzo Gracie and Renzo shot in for a takedown and at the time Dan sprawled he did a upper cut and Ko’d Renzo..he knew Renzo was out and didn’t go for any more shots..Dan Henderson is a class act..and the toughest fighter Silva will face this year.
If anyone has a chance against Silva, it is Hendo.
As for The Crow, he was to fight at last weekends WCO fight that was abruptly cancelled due to funding issues. I was looking forward to seeing him fight and see where he was in his fight game, but it was not to be. He has never recovered from the loss to Franklin. I think it was two-fold; physical beating and verbal lashing from GSP = broken.

ABSOLUTELY JOHN! At first Hendo was primarly know for his devastating overhand right. But out of all the olympic wrestlers, Dan Henderson fay and away possesses the best stand up out of all of them. PLUS it is always improving. He now has KO power in BOTH of his hands.
KO power in both hands AND a jaw that has never been KO’d. Now that is a LETHAL combination. Oh did I mention olympic level greco roman wrestling skills too? And a very accomplished tournament submission grappler as well. There are not many, if any, opponents that much up well with Dan Henderson.
All of Joe’s fights in the UFC have been on two weeks or less notice. I really don’t see this being an “easy” match as some of you have put it. Although he lost to filho he held his own for the most part. Also don’t forget if there was literally a second more in round two of his Herman fight….Herman would have been unconcious from that triangle. He’s an experienced veteran fighter, he knows what its going to take to win, had a Pride contract until Zuffa unfortunately bought them out…… and he trains at my gym
teehee
Anyways try not to make bold statements such as “come on give mcdonald a challenge for christ sake” because thats what http://www.sherdog.com is for.

weak?….your accessment is weak….both these fighters are very tough and talented fighters…cant say I care much for Mac Donald but he is good! You dont have 50 mma fights and win 75% of the time to be considered “No Challege”…gotta a hundred bucks on El Dirte…regardless of who wins, it will be a quality, entertaining fight…YOU’LL see if you have enough time to switch over from WWF or whatever their known as..now thats weak!
