“I was very well prepared physically and technically, my team deserves congratulations. They did an excellent job. I really did give it my best and I’m here to prove I’ll take on anyone at all to prove Brazilians are macho and go all the way to the end. I’d like to thank all my fans. Were you excited? I’m just happy to have made you all enthusiastic!! It was worth it for the fans, my crew…and now let’s go for the next one!!”
– Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva in a message to fans from his official blog following his unanimous decision loss to Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell at UFC 79: “Nemesis” on December 29.

Im still a Wanderlei fan!!!
I can’t wait for his next fight!!
maybe a rematch with Tito or Vitor is in order
perhaps wandy was over trained!
In my book the best LHW in the world.Amazing fighter and great person. He’ll hold the LHW or MW belt sooner or later.
Give him Tito!!!
i love watching him fight, he will give anyone a great fight and beat most,he still has a good chance of getting that belt theres so much compition at that wieght class i don’t see anyone holding that belt to long.unless there the tuff coach and we have to wait a year for them to fight again.
i wanted chuck to win but felt a bit sorry for wandy after. if wandy is fighting anyone but chuck he will have my full support. and he will defo have a belt but might have to wait abit for it
Most exciting fighter by far….. no matter what he will put on a show… i still believe he could of beatin chuck.. didn’t make sence that he didn’t use his knees or take him to the ground.. makes me think there’s more behind it all… but either way… still one of the best should be in the UFC hall of fame!!! or MMA Hall of FAme if there was one.. i think chuck should take on Shogun if he really has the balls to.. NOW thast a match!!!

How can anyone not Love wanderlei. Most fighters get beatin into a corner and cover up (Tito) and just let the opponent T off on them till the fight is over. You back wanderlei into a corner and he swings his way out of it.
He has got the heart, talent, and agression to make any fight worth watching! For those who arent familiar with the axe murderer, you aint seen nothing yet wait till he gets someone in his legendary Tai clinch and starts unleashing his Anderson Silva-like-Knees! Damn I wish soccer kicks were allowed in the UFC!
I would love to see Shogun vs. Chuck Next!!!!!

And lets throw Tito in their with Wandy. These two fights should be on the same card.

Yea in your book and no one elses
It takes excessive amounts of machoness and a complete lack of shame to wear banana hammocks on Copacabana Beach in Rio the way those Brazilians do.

haha..lol
That was the funniest shit I herd all week!…LOL—thanks.
I love Wanderlei but technically? I feel like watching that fight again all he did was swing wildly and take jabbs on his noggin. He also backed straight up several times and ran into the cage. It was almost as if after he got hurt once all his boxing training went out the window. I love the guy and was rooting for him to KO the Iceman but geez…. For a standup guy he will have trouble against almost everyone. I dont see him winning against Houston, Jardine, Shogun, or Thiago Silva. I mean he might be able to defeat Tito…. but then again I feel like if Tito gets on top of him hes done. At this point I feel like Wanderlei could only beat people like Bonnar, Mike Nickels, or like Eric Schafer. lol.
I was hoping a little more out of him. Im not hating. Just wanting Wanderlei to hold gold at some point. Guy is damn cool.
I dont understand Why the UFC doesnt hold a Pride event in Japan at least once a year. I would like to see how the PRIDE guys do against the UFC guys on there home turf (Japan) under Pride rules! The UFC would benefit because Japan is a huge global market and those fans are crazy about mma, especially PRIDE. Talk about a money maker for the UFC, Pride events used to sell out Stadiums, while the UFC is selling out basketball arena’s. It would be a great business opportunity for the UFC to expand globally. Having the rights to PRIDE would make expanding to Japan relatively easy compared to other global markets. PRIDE is a HUGE brand name in Japan. The UFC, at the very least should put on a PRIDE FC Shockwave show at the end of every year, featuring all UFC vs. Pride fights but under PRIDE rules! That way we can really guage fighters. Like next year, I would love to see Wandy vs. Liddell in a PRIDE ring in Japan, under Pride rules and with 10 minute round and 2 five min ute rounds……..That would really be interesting.
It takes excessive amounts of machoness and a complete lack of shame to wear banana hammocks on Copacabana Beach in Rio the way those Brazilians do.
Lol, that reminds me, at least I like Wandy’s new trunks a lot better than the old ones. It used to look like he was wearing a freaking diaper.
They need to feed him T. Martin then maybe Kampman or Franklin all kind of good matchups at MW for Silva
In Pride ring Wandy would destroy Liddell.
In the above quote, Wanderlei says “I really did give it my best and I’m here to prove I’ll take on anyone at all to prove Brazilians are macho and go all the way to the end.”
Do you think that this sentence has anything to do with the fact that Chuck him down twice, ONLY after he was ahead on the scorecards (the very beginning of the 3rd round and ESPECIALLY the one during the last 25 or so seconds of the fight) and the fact that Chuck kept on looking up at the ‘big screen’ to see how much time was left in the fight for him to win a decision?
For the last 6 years Chuck has said that when he fought Wanderlei Silva, he would stand there a knock him out - he couldn’t see the fight ending any other way. If that was true, the fight wouldn’t have ended the way it did. It would have ended with the two of them standing toe to toe swinging for the fences trying to knock the other guys head off , ala Griffin/Bonnar I.

Couldn’t agree more. Wanderlei will be back very soon, and all of the American fans will love him, except for a few haters. But hopefully even those haters can appreciate everything Wanderlei brings with him to the octagon/ring every single time he competes.

PhilQNY: I would love to see wanderlei Crack Ortiz, but if they fight we risk a Bigger Ortiz, dry humping an undersized Wanderlei (The sean sherk technique) for 15 minutes.
I think the main reason some PRIDE fighters havent had as much success as they should, is that they dont cut weight. For wanderlei to be as succesful as he could be he has 2 options:
1. stay at Light heavy weight, Put on 10 - 15 lbs. and cut weight for a fight
2. Keep his current weight and cut down to 185 lbs. (like Rich Franklin does)
Foreign fighters would benefit by joining a dominant wrestling camp, who can properly teach them how to cut weight the right way, because I doubt that many Pride fighters are cutting weight in the UFC.

Chuck ruined an epic battle with that BS ending. Also the judging was terrible. I understand BS judging in ENGLAND, but to have such an important fight scored that way in Vegas is just inexcusable. The 1st round could have went either way…The 2nd round was ALL WANDERLEI and the 2 judges who scored it for chuck should be fired. The 3rd round was won by chuck, although I expected more out of him then ruining the end of the classic fight with that BS takedown!
Wanderlei may have lost to chuck, but I dont think any UFC LHW can beat him in Japan under Pride rules. At some point in the next couple of years the UFC should give him the chance to prove it by holding a PRIDE event in Japan!
Regarding UFC holding a Pride evnt in Japan…
That would be awesome but I think it all fell under because the Japanese didn’t want to do business with Pride at all after the Yakuza incident and due to the fact it was now being run by an American Group, different approaches to business mixed in with Dana Whites brashness probably scared them out of it…
Would be a great idea tho’
I would love to see a USA vs. Brazil event kind of like they UFC did with USA vs. Canada. Another Idea that would work as long as Chuck and wandy are not champions would be to have them coach on the ultimate fighters. USA vs. Brazil, ultimate fighters show. Of course the Brazilians would have to learn English and I dont know what weight class it would feature but it would bring much needed spice to the TUF show.
I agree that once Chuck knew he was ahead on points, he no longer went for the knockout. His takedown at the end of Rnd 2 and 3 were to make sure that he was ahead on points. Not that there is anything wrong with that, he did the smart thing because it was only 3 rounds but he did say for many years that he wants to know Wand out.
A shame since I personally feel that Wand was very hurt in the 3rd and was just waiting to be knocked out.
Either way, I still love Wand as a fighter but he still looks nowhere close to the condition and mentality he had in his prime. I mean, does the Wand that fought Chuck look like the Wand that fought Rampage to you? Didn’t think so.
And yes, I would love to see Wand/Tito 2.

It could work if they UFC would partner up with the old PRIDE management team. If the UFC just tried to do it on there own it wouldnt work but if they included Mr. Sakakibara and a couple of the other ex-Pride executives it could definetly work!
I’m really start to buy into what Juantio said about Rua and Silva being on the sauce in Pride. Neither have fought with the aggression either fought with in Pride. Can anyone say Checque drops (look it up).

I think that the wanderlei we saw this weekend did not fight to his potential because he was overly concerned with putting on a show for us fans. For years all Chuck and Wandy did was say that they wanted to bang it out and Ko each other… It was like a striking game of chicken, who woulod back down 1st, and in that aspect Chuck backed down, which is a shame since he had a chance at finishing wanderlei in the 3rd.
Also, I have stated on this site that i support Joe Rogan as an announcer, but after the way he called that fight…I want his HEAD! He did that fight an injustice…if I didnt know better he made it seem like it was a one sided beating, which was not the case at all. the UFC needs to stop trying to destort reality and just let the chips fall were they may!

I am the biggest Rampage and juanito fan out there but there is nothin to suggest that. Everytime Wandy has fought against dangerous strikers he fought undercontrol like he did against Liddell, Hunt, Cro cop. Shogun lost due to gassing, not strength. This is an old comment. Both fighters fought in the USA under PRIDE, they were both tested for roids and never failed….So until you have some proof put those comments to bed!
How do you guys think chuck did not try to knock him out. Chuck was blasting him and had him hurt in every single round and he always went in for the kill but wandy is not easy to put away everytime chuck moved in for the kill wandy wasnt not backing down he was throwing punches with bad intentions and chuck was fighting smart and avoiding those shots for the most part. Now you guys are complaing about chuck taking him down after all of you guys say he is to one dimensional and when he shows another part of his game you get on him for that. Chuck won that fight and i would like to see him fight either machida or shogun next.
All the pride fighters fought through out last year..Not one solid top 5 division fighter is left. You have Fedor, Gomi, Barnett..apart from those guys, they all lost their fights. I think these guys are actually smart for not taking fights in the cage. That cage is too BIG compared to the ring
Wandy vs Chuck in PRIDE at Japan under PRIDE rules, would be a great fight to see but sadly PRIDE is officially DEAD. Maybe UFC could throw an event in Japan under PRIDE like rules and see the difference in the rematch. Wandy would throw some nasty stomps ansd soccer kicks if Chuck slips or gets knocked to the ground like the fisrt bout.

John: You hit it on the noise. Where was the takedowns tlaked about in the pre fight chuck interview. ” I’m going to knock him out ” yeah sure.. Chuck took a page out of Sean Sherks play book. Wandy kept his side of the bargin..even when he caught Chuck..( and many people would say ” Chuck slipped or the punch caused Chuck to slip ” Chuck got punched in the face and hit the deck..to Chuck’s credit he got right back up..but Wandy didn’t jump on him..he let him back up to keep it standing. Is there ever going to be a MMA HALL OF FAME??? or will it just be the ufc’s?? Wandy is a MMA hall of famer.
Im still a Wanderlei fan!!!
I can’t wait for his next fight!!
Of course. He fought like a true warrior!
i think different rules means different guys will be on top. it’s a lot harder to finish fights with pure aggression when you can’t soccer kick and stomp, strong wrestlers are protected by being “downed”, and it’s easy to tie someone up when they have to jump into guard to do any damage. I like silva but he should really change his style for the UFC. He will be outranged by larger, more technical strikers, will have a hard time using his MT, and he isn’t really known for takedowns or transitions to submissions
violentmike- Give chuck some credit when he deserves it. After his two losses, everyone talked about how he was done and should retire. Then he finally gets the long awaited fight with Wandy and delivers with a performance that proves he’s still at the top of the division. Now I haven’t re-watched that fight, but chuck won it decisively, and it was not due to outpointing by way of takedowns nor was chuck trying to let the clock run out. There’s something positive to be said about a fighter’s ability to realize he’s just wasting his energy and to make the decision to recompose himself.
It was a great fight, and I’m glad nobody got knocked out. I just couldn’t be happy with that happening to wandy a third time in a row. Given that it was his first fight in the UFC, I think that he’s shown that he’s the same, if not better fighter than he was in Pride.

I agree, but you had to know, coming in to this fight, that Chuck had it in the bag if it came down to a decision. He was completely owned by Jardine and it was still a split.
At least Wandy has the perfect attitude. He understands that win or lose, its whether the fans want to see you again that counts.
If you dont love this guy your probably a mayhem miller fan,
You here so many times fighters saying I just needed the win like koscheck playing it safe with diego and forrest dancing a win with rameirez and arlovski scared to commit against werdum
Then you have a true warior like wanderlie who wants to put on a show more than anything to please his fans by going toe to toe with probaly the best striker in the whole sport. There were a couple of time where he could have jumped on chuck but didnt hopefully wandy has set an example to all the fighters that its not all about the win wandy looks just as good in his loss as he would have if he won. But I still think that going toe to toe with chuck was dumb on his part but man he is f**king awsome to watch
does anyone remember when chuck had wandy against the cage, first when he opened him with an elbow, then a barrage of punches soon after, he tried to knock him out, actually twice he tried, but as chuck said himself wandy is one tough guy! as for eveyone talking bout the takedowns, during the fight both goldberg and rogan stated that chuck had been interviewd a couple of years ago, and when asked if he would use his wrestling against anyone, he said wandy! as for wandy not goin for knees, he too had respect for the iceman to change his game, rushing in to try and clinch wit chuck is not a good idea, both fighters showed tremendous respect for one another, and all this bs bout if it was held in a ring there would be a different outcome, just get over it, in my opinion it was a great fight with both fighters giving it dere all! i believe its quite funny funny when everyone here is bashing both of them, showing no respect to either fighter when both fighters changed dere gameplan completely due to the RESPECT both fighters have for the others abilities!
Jess,
In the UFC 79 recap thread, the Chuck Liddell post fight interview thread, and the UFC 79 payouts thread, this topic is discussed at length by myself and others.
I am giving Chuck credit for the win. I actually predicted the scored cards exact right after the fight ended and my brother asked me 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27 Chuck.
The point above was that for the last 6 years Chuck has said that when he fought Wanderlei Silva, he would stand there a knock him out - he couldn’t see the fight ending any other way. If that was true, the fight wouldn’t have ended the way it did. It would have ended with the two of them standing toe to toe swinging for the fences trying to knock the other guys head off , ala Griffin/Bonnar I. Chuck never said, “When I finally get to fight Wanderlei Silva, I am going to try and attempt a couple of safe takedowns for the first time in 10 years, but only if its late in the fight, and I’m up on the scorecards. Also, once the 3rd round comes around, I will be looking at the clock every chance I get just hoping to get a decision. And once that clock hits 25 seconds, I will dry hump Wanderlei to get him back for stepping into the octagon last year and saying he wants to f*ck me.” (”I wanna f*ck Chuck”)
But if you were to read through some of my posts in the other threads, you’d see that I actually do agree with you.
I only brought it up again in this thread because of Wanderlei statement, “I really did give it my best and I’m here to prove I’ll take on anyone at all to prove Brazilians are macho and go all the way to the end.” That quote REALLY sounds like he’s elluding to exactly what I was talking about…

I only brought it up again in this thread because of Wanderlei statement, “I really did give it my best and I’m here to prove I’ll take on anyone at all to prove Brazilians are macho and go all the way to the end.” That quote REALLY sounds like he’s elluding to exactly what I was talking about…
Great Post Jess!
Well, I dont’ know. Either way, this just goes to show that very high profile fights like this one should be 5 rounders, even if they are not for titles. I’ve heard this issue brought up before, and it would be a positive effect if main event worthy fights were extended as such.
Until next time, J
and thanks!

Man just accept it that chuck fought a smarter fight chuck tried to knock him out so it did not happen big deal whta about wandi knocking chuck out yall aint downing him for not doing it damn its over chuck won enough of the b/s excuses
I’d believe him if he said something about Brazilians have an eagerness to learn based on his enthusiasm to adapt to the Octagon.
I’d believe him if he said something about an indomitable “semper fi, do or die” work ethic.”
But someone who looks like Homer Simpson extolling the machismo of Brazilians? No thank you, very much.

He is a warrior.
First off, great post, couldnt agree more!
Its getting beyond a joke the amount of people that contradict themselves and try to bring both fighters down, not just chuck! to say Chuck didnt try to knock wandi out is jst plain silly, didnt you see wandi’s head snap back on countless occasions??
i didnt hear wandi complaining after the fight, reason being he knew he was beaten by a better fighter on the night. All too often have we heard chuck is finished and that he is one dimensional, the minute he uses his other skills, certain sections of the mma world try to ridicule him?!! Shocking!!
Ofcourse he done the right thing in taking wandi down for the last 30seconds, he tried to knock him out for 14.5 mins!! Now there are idiots saying chuck went back on his word, shut up and dont be silly, he fought great and very sensible!!
There has been much debate surrounding the second round aswell, yes you could give the knock down to wandi, however from that point on, chuck dominated the round as it progressed, cutting wandi bad and rocking him before getting the take down! Much closer than you are all claiming!!
If a fight like that cant keep fans happy then I have no idea what will? well done Dana you pulled it off great fight.
Big up’s to wandi aswell, look forward to see you battle again!!

Where you a bit surprised when Chuck went for a takedown??? I was..I taught..for what Chuck said..that they both were going to keep it standing. Even when Chuck ” Slipped ” twice..in my book got dropped twice..wandy didn’t take it to the ground. He kept his word. This fight will end standing. Chuck road out the last round to the judges score card..he put on a good show but didn’t do what he said and didn’t leave everything he had in the octagon.
Good to know Silva is still staying positive.
I still think Wanderlei is a better fighter than the iceman, when chuck went down becuase he “slipped”, wandy didn’t pounce on him like he should have because he wanted to please the fans. and then that pussy chuck liddell took him down twice!
after all that promoting about how they were gonna stand in front of each other and throw. Wandy will get him next time.
Hell yeah, this fool is the MAN!! Onward up the latter Wandi!!
He needs to go back to his old “Killer” style, not this defensive boxing style he has been using in his last couple fights
Wandy is the man indeed!

True Thatx2
In the above quote, Wanderlei says “I really did give it my best and I’m here to prove I’ll take on anyone at all to prove Brazilians are macho and go all the way to the end.”
Do you think that this sentence has anything to do with the fact that Chuck him down twice, ONLY after he was ahead on the scorecards (the very beginning of the 3rd round and ESPECIALLY the one during the last 25 or so seconds of the fight) and the fact that Chuck kept on looking up at the ‘big screen’ to see how much time was left in the fight for him to win a decision?
Couldn’t agree more. Wanderlei will be back very soon, and all of the American fans will love him, except for a few haters. But hopefully even those haters can appreciate everything Wanderlei brings with him to the octagon/ring every single time he competes.
True that indeed
He should shed some muscle and move to 185. I actually think if he stays at 205 Tito would beat him again. If that match happens I’ll be betting on Tito.
Dan and Wandy again. Love it.
Wandy vs. Anderson. Interesting but I reckon Anderson would take it. Think he might KO Wandy.
