Mac Danzig

Props: PETA.org

Quoteworthy:

“Ultimate Fighting champion Mac Danzig, best known as the winner of Spike TV’s Ultimate Fighter 6, devours fighters not flesh. At 155 pounds of pure fighting fury, Danzig is tough enough in the ring, but when it comes to animal abuse, the 27-year-old Danzig — who is vegan — takes no prisoners.”

I really don’t have much more to say about this other than thanks to BloodyElbow.com for the assist. Moo.

That’s simply not true…it takes 20 times the land area to feed servings of meat than it does to feed servings of vegetarian food. In case anyone is confused, you have to raise crops to feed the animal…if you used that crop land to directly feed people, 20 times the amount of people could eat.

Disclaimer: Yes, I am a vegetarian and have been for over 12 years. I won’t push my beliefs unless asked, but the logical/eco-friendly/humane diet is certainly a vegan one. Whether you choose your palette over compassion, that’s up to you.

I see the Vegan point of view…breeding animals for product/profit, animal suffering, etc., however the look and feel of leather and fine furs simply justifies all those anal electrocutions IMO.

When I drop a ribeye on the grill, the furthest thing from my mind is how cattle are bred, raised, killed, etc or how it may or may not have suffered. I’m past all that. This animal has fulfilled it’s destiny, it’s purpose. If you need a moment of silence to commemorate this animal’s sacrifice, be my guest, but make it quick…I like mine rare.

I have always found it funny how upset people get over the whole Vegan vs meat eater debate. How simplistic is this? This is seriously an issue, and something that people choose to make fun of?

Its just food, who cares what and how he eats. Should I start razzing people for the type of toothpaste they use? “Oh look its one of the non-flouride toothpaste users, what a freak”

I’m glad Mac is doing this, he has something that he is passionate for, and its something that helps others. More people need to stand up for what they believe in, even if you think its dumb.

And regardless of what people say, a meatless diet is a healthier one. I mean if god wanted us to eat meat, wouldn’t he make animals pre-cooked? Then we wouldn’t have to work so hard to eat them. I haven’t eaten meat since I was 7 or so. I have little body fat, never had pimples, zero health problems. Sure it might not be the vegan lifestyle, but there is no way I can go back in time to test otherwise.

Actually….Eating veggies is like buying wholesale, you skip the middle man. It takes less “stuff” to grow a plant than it does a cow. Eating a Vegan or Vegetarian diet is better for the environment.

And EdenMachine, if you eat right, as a Vegan or Vegetarian, you’d need no more supplements than a meat eater. Maybe less. Really, ask Sean Sherk.

Why does everyone think expressing an opinion is the same as pushing it on other people? If he were trying to push his beliefs on others, don’t you’d think he would have been trying to convert the rest of the house on TUF instead of bitching at them for eating his hummus? He has an opinion about how people ought to conduct themselves, and he’s saying so. It’s not like he’s coming to your house & slapping the steak out of your mouth.

Interesting that people don’t get so offended when Carl Lewis says the best diet when you’re in training is a vegan one–because he doesn’t talk about the ethical issues at all. Really, people, you don’t need to be so threatened by someone who disagrees with you about a moral issue.

Also, a few quick factual things:

-Mac Danzig’s not a UFC champion, but he was the KoTC lightweight champion.

-If you can feed the world on meat, you can feed the world on a vegetarian diet. It’s a way more efficient way of producing useful nutrients. Think about it: to get that cow/chicken/pig up to slaughter size, you’ve got to feed it vegetable matter (usually grain); some of the nutrients/energy in the animals’ feed gets wasted–that is, not turned into nutrients/energy in the meat–because it’s used up keeping the animal alive & moving while it grows. All that grain going into the animals could go straight into people instead. Cut out the middlecow.

-How many fighters in training DON’T eat lots of vitamin supplements? The only vitamin you can’t get from a balanced vegan diet is B12, and you can get plant sourced supplements–which you have to take about once a month. That said, B12 deficiency is something you definitely don’t want to mess with–causes nasty brain damage & stuff. But I think there are some people here who can tell you about that first-hand.

Thats actually a myth. Vegetarians are at risk of losing out on Vitamins like b12, vitamin d, calcium, magnesium and potassium.

But you can get calcium in almonds/almond milk, spinach, baked beans and broccoli. Magnesium and Potassium are in all sorts of nuts, veggies and grains. The only tough ones are Vitamin D and B12, but you can buy a fortified cereal with these added. So instead of your Fruit Loops or Apple Jacks, I eat a flake cereal with added D and b12.

The only vitamin I take is one tablet of vitamin c daily.

Ignorant. Humans are NOT designed to eat meat. Every single meat eating animal on the planet has a short intestinal tract that allows them to get rid of things they eat quickly and maximize the crude proteins that meat has. Humans intestines are too long for this and a heavy diet of meat eating has been proven to increase the odds of colon cancer. This is fact. Some will argue that we were born with “canine teeth” to tear flesh. This is not fact. Biologists have established that animals who share physical characteristics also share a common diet. We have flat molars to crush and grind plant matter. Carnivores do not have this physical characteristic. Our stomachs lack the acidity that carnivores have, allowing them to digest meat and kill the bacteria present that would make us sick. Humans get sick when we eat uncooked meat because of the bacteria. That is why we cook it. Comparing our anatomies clearly illustrates the fact that the human body is built to run on a vegetarian diet. Humans have absolutely none of the distinguishing anatomical characteristics that either carnivores or even natural omnivores have. This is fact. Meat does not give you essential proteins that you cant get elsewhere and it has been proven that you do not have to take supplements to avoid vitamin deficiencies. The most healthy and longest living peoples in the world eat a diet with zero or minimal red meat. Americans are the most unhealthy people in the world and Diet is a huge factor in this. Educate yourselves before attacking someone for not eating the same things you do. It’s just food and if someone doesn’t like meat or animal suffering they shouldn’t get attacked for saying so. If you don’t kill it yourself, you don’t know what kind of hormones they put in your food. Chickens do not naturally have 3in thick breasts. Cows do not naturally produce milk in the quantities they genetically engineer them to. This is fact. Flame Away….

As someone who was raised on barbeque, I tell you that one of the most painful things to for me to do was to turn my back on a good steak. No, I don’t eat meat anymore. Yes, I do consume dairy products and eggs, but I’m trying to give that up. Yes, I have leather belts, a coat etc, but I’ll never buy another leather item again. Contrary to any myth, I don’t have any vitamin deficiencies, and I’d love to know what established long term studies are being used as evidence to say that a vegetarian needs “pounds of vitamin suppliments that he has to take because of all the vitamin deficiencies that he would have from being a vegetarian without the suppliments.”

I will not respond to any puerile attempt at humor trying to prove that you’re a meat-eating alpha male when you’re really the bottom of the pecking order. If you want to discuss this in a rational intelligent manner, I’d be happy to correspond with you.

Respect those who have the willpower to go meat free. I was once the guy mocking the vegetarians, but the only thing that comes close to a night/day feeling of difference I’ve ever experienced from being meat free was becoming an atheist. Both events lifted a veil from me…one was a physical burden and the other a mental burden.

I can understand one of the basic problems (i.e. hostility towards vegetarians & vegans) because some of the most vocal proponents of vegan and vegetarian life have been pretty damned confrontational. “All vegetarians are loony because of nutters like PETA” is an insulting and inherently flawed argument, just as “All meat eaters are knuckle-dragging semi-evolved troglodytes.” The logic behind those arguments is seductively easy, but inherently bullshit.

I am a vegetarian aspiring to be vegan because of the environmental impact, because of factory farming, and because of the completely unnecessary burden meat places on the digestive system as well as the overwhelming presence of cruelty to animals.

I respect PETA for the work they’re doing, but I think that the better part of their tactics leave much to be desired. I also have serious problems with their ringing endorsement of Sen. Robert Byrd. But is that supposed to mean that I don’t respect Moby, Maggie Q, or Mac Danzig because they’ve worked with PETA? I respect them as much as I respect any person who says no to factory farming and is willing to kill their own meal and use as much of their kill as possible like most hunters I know.

Wow, this is all over the place. Here are some highlights:

“What the hell does he eat for protien? SOY?! that blows, everyone knows soy sucks.”

–I guess this guy thinks he can speak for everyone.

“i am High school wrestler and there is no way i would be in as good a shape as i am without natural protein”

–WOW! A high school wrestler! Guess what, you don’t have the education (or wisdom) to really speak about dietary needs. You said it yourself, you’re in high school. Leave the nutritional stuff to people who are really educated about it…like doctors.

“Kinda like a fighter who doesnt eat meat… sooo he believes in mindless violence for sport but not meat”

–Actually, competitive MMA is a test of reflexes, training , and strength in a controlled environment with rules…blah, blah, blah…..you’re reading a blog on MMAmania.com, do you really think this is mindless violence?

“i have a friend who condones hunting but wont eat meat. It just doesnt make sence”

– Yeah, and that one friend is a spokesperson for all vegans/vegatarians. Um Yeah. Your friend is entitled to think whatever he wants but don’t pretend he speaks for everyone else. (Oh, and its spelled:sense)

“The earth’s population cannot be supported on vegetation alone.”

–Thats hilarious. Complete conjecture. Actually according to the Dept of Agriculture, we could feed the world several times over with just the vegetation from the US. World hunger has to do with getting the food to people, not a food shortage.

“man he cant blame all people,we’re all grown eating meat, our our paternt teach us though, so if this his opinion fine, but keep it to his self’

–Why should he keep it to himself. He found a healthy lifestyle because someone turned him onto being a vegan. It’s the American way to speak freely.

And my favorite:
“Caring about animal feelings is more important then caring about human feelings?”
– Who said anything about that? If you are crying because someone suggests a healthy lifestyle, you have problems. Its not about choosing humans over animals or vice versa. Its about preventing animals from suffering needlessly. Period.

BTW, nobody but nobody, thinks you are tough because you eat meat. You bought it at the store or shot it from yards away with a firearm (if you hunted it yourself). I have to ask, why are so many of you so pent up about someone suggesting a vegetarian lifestyle? When someone says “fast food is bad for you”, nobody postured up and said how awesome the fast food diet is the way meat eaters do when someone states facts that a vegan diet is healthier? Same thing. I know, I know, you ate meat all your life and you’re okay right? Its like putting bad gas in your car, it’ll still run, just for a shorter life span. Bottom line, it is healthier you just cant seem to wrap you lifestyle around it. Maybe because you might think vegans are bleeding heart liberals or something. I dont know. Facts is: it a healthy life style. Period.

Most vegans actually, many of the ones that I know don’t try to push they way they live on anyone. What people leave out of the equation is how hard meat-eaters fight the idea and how they verbally bash what in essence is just a way of eating.

So what are we supposed to do then when called freaks, or idiots or ignorant assumptions are made like “lack of protein”, “there isn’t enough vegetables to feed the world” etc etc. We do the same thing every MMA fan here does when we are approached with people who have no know are not knowledgeable on the subject. We share information. The difference is, meat eaters think we are trying to convert them. Its not a cult, who cares if you join or not. Truth is it leaves more vegan women for us, and trust me most of them are as fit as Mac Danzig’s woman is.

Speaking of protein, I just had a bowl of pasta that had 22 grams of carbs, and 23 grams of protein for one serving. You don’t “need” meat.

Regarding the question “where is the hostility coming from”:

Read the poster. Apparently if you eat meat you are contributing to suffering. That’s called an accusation. It may be true. It may be false. But that it’s an accusation is the proper way to characterize the statement. People don’t like having accusations hurled at them. ‘If you eat meat you’re hurting the planet’ is a fairly strong thing to say.

It needs to be backed up with facts in order to gain any purchase. Because frankly, eating meat ISN’T like being homophobic. Disrespecting people is kind of the point of being homophobic. Disrespecting the planet is not the point of eating meat.

And so I will contribute that one has to talk in terms of calories per acre and at that point it varies by crop. I’ve never seen anybody do a complete acre by acre nutrient by nutrient analysis - only crop by crop analysis. However, broccoli has about 3x the cpa as pork and oats more like 25 the cpa I believe. You see there’s a lot of variance. So we’d have to see what fruits and veggie combinations could be used and in what rotations to provide all nutrients people need and then do a calculation based on that. And since I’ve read PETA’s literature before, I’d have to see the actual study, not a summary, and it can’t be sponsored by PETA because I will suspect the data.

Even given a vegan-friendly result, I would continue to eat meat and instead of going vegan try to support scientists trying to develop synthetic meat so that synthetic meat has the proper texture and flavor before taking up acres with mean problem out-paces the much more serious global food distribution problem.

Eating meat contributes to world hunger. 1 lb of meat wastes 6-7 lbs of other food on average.

Of course you could eat fish which are caught in the wild… but if we keep eating them at the rate we do there will be no more of them left pretty soon.

But whatev… make your own decision. I eat meat and fish, but not every day.

The difference is that, in your hypothetical, you’re not telling people that they are cruel, heartless, brainless, immoral murderers for eating anything other than spaghetti. Danzig’s ad itself is pretty light fare, accusing those that disagree with him of only “contributing to [animals’] suffering,” which I guess is factually correct. However, I think that people are familiar enough with PETA’s moral condescension towards omnivores to get justifiably put-off by Danzig’s ad.

Ignorant. Humans are NOT designed to eat meat.
“There is considerable debate over whether humans are physiologically better suited to a herbivore, omnivore, or carnivore diet. The Vegetarian Resource Group and others however, have concluded that humans are naturally omnivores.[9][10][11]”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetarianism

It would appear that we’re designed to eat both.

I don’t care if animals die for me to eat meat. It’s freakin’ nature. Animals get eaten by other animals all the time, so what’s the big deal if I do it too? I don’t agree in them living in shitty conditions and the like but me turning vegetarian will not do a damn thing to stop the animal’s poor treatment. Just because I don’t eat the meat from the animal doesn’t mean it’s suffering magically goes away. If I actually wanted to make a difference I’d campaign for them or some shit but I don’t really care enough to spend a large part of my time and energy to make a small difference.

Thats a good answer. You are right that PETA is pretty crazy, the only problem is there isnt any middle ground organizations. People who are passionate about things tend to be a little nuts. So until a middle ground “please everybody” organization comes along PETA is what we get. And much like many other support groups in this country albeit political or environmental we have to ask if the juice is worth the squeeze? In this case the juice is 70% or so, and thats good enough.

All this proves is that humans have overcome their evolutionary shortcomings to rise to the top of the food chain. To voluntarily surrender that position would mean that everything our neanderthal ancestors endured, all the sufering and death that came from hunting prehistoric super-animals, would be for nothing. Well I, for one, will not dishonor our Guida-looking forebears by refusing to eat the things they sacrificed so heavily to provide for us.

Top reasons for Vegetarianism:
#1-Poverty=no money to buy meat.
#2-Religion
#3-choice=vast majority of vegetarians (that are not #’s 1 and 2) live in the U.S. and Europe. Most people in these two places have money to make a choice.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for ethical treatment of all living things, but we did not evolve to the top of the food chain by eating or simply to eat salad. Lunchtime and I’m going to go grab a cheeseburger.

Yeh they do actually. Like I said above, most hardcore vegans like Mac apparently support PETA either because they dont fully know what PETA does, or they just figure support PETA or find another organization that doesn’t have the reach PETA does.

One of the thing I dislike about PETA is how they advocate spray painting people wearing fur. You spray paint fur, and then you just assure that person will buy another fur to replace the one you destroyed. So its pointless.

As far as meat eating goes, I have some buddies that are die hard meat eaters, so I at least tell them to make sure to eat Kosher meat. Its healthier. I worked as a photographer for a law office for 4 years, and I remember one “nameless” case were the feed had killed off 500 some off cows. After to took pics of ALL of them, I jokingly asked the guy “whats gonna happen to all these cows”. “They’ll all be hamburger, hahah”.
He saw the look of surprise on my face and said “hey, they look way better now that most of the cows that are used for meat”. This may not be true all over the US, but in California I know for a fact it is. Eat Kosher meat, if you have to eat meat.

Another day, another great set of quotes:

“It needs to be backed up with facts in order to gain any purchase.”

–Oops, sorry the poster doesn’t go into a 200 page essay on the merits of a vegan lifestyle. Oh wait, maybe its just trying to make a short quick impression….like a poster is supposed to do.

“Peta are a bunch of pet loving freaks they don’t judge tigers from eating meat or any other animals so don’t judge us”

–The difference is a tiger can’t make a decision like that. you can, you have a conscience…well maybe not you, but most of us can control ourselves and make educated decisions.

“The four letters that make up PETA are offensive in itself.”

– I keep forgetting that anyone that takes a hardline on something they believe is offensive. (sarcasm)

“I refuse to feel guilty about what i CHOOSE to eat. No one is gonna tell me to eat this or that just like no one is gonna tell me where to work, how to dress or how to live my life…but i won’t tell them how to live so what gives them the right to do that to me? You choose not to eat meat. Thats fine but don’t plaster billboards all over the place trying to make me feel guilty about what i choose to put in my stomach. Nice leather gloves by the way Mac.”

–This one is classic. No one is asking to to feel guilty. The purpose of the poster itraise awareness. NO one is TELLING you how to live. Where in that head of yours did you get that idea. Again, its just trying to raise awareness. Not control you. Nobody can force you to eat a certain way, and no one is trying. What a misguided individual you are. And what’s wrong with displaying a poster for something you believe in. Its the American way, free speech and all. Oh, and the gloves: It looks like a UFC press photo layered onto the poster. The UFC requires their fighters to wear their gloves which are made of leather. I bet Danzig would where some kind of synthetic glove if he was allowed to in competition.

“Anyone notice on Mac’s Wiki page that he became a vegan after meeting his vegan girlfriend? That explains a lot.”

–Yeah, its explains that she might have introduced him to the diet. It doesnt mean he turned Vegan to get a girl. Not everyone will do anything to for sex. Sounds like you might be a slave to your urges though.

“All this proves is that humans have overcome their evolutionary shortcomings to rise to the top of the food chain. To voluntarily surrender that position would mean that everything our neanderthal ancestors endured, all the sufering and death that came from hunting prehistoric super-animals, would be for nothing.”

Umm, yeah. Okay there. Keep worrying about those neanderthal ancestors, meanwhile I will continue to think for myself, which is the real reason we are sentient beings.

“I didn’t crawl my way to the top of the food chain to eat rabbit food. I eat Beef, Baby!”

You crawled your way to the top of the food chain? When you were a baby where you hunted by animals? Okay.

“Im from Philly and I cant imagine not scarfing down a nice Phil;y Cheesteak! Imagine living your life, eating Humus every day. Where the hell does he get is energy?”

–Right and Hummas is the only thing vegans eat. And why is it so hard to imagine? Do you eat a cheeese steak everyday of your life? If not, is it really so hard to imagine another day without one? Just try. Yeah go ahead and have one if you feel like it, but are you that dependent on a cheese steak sandwich.

“Just because I don’t eat the meat from the animal doesn’t mean it’s suffering magically goes away.”

–Another classic. Are you so self centered that you think your actions are the only ones that change anything?. They don’t. But if you and a bunch of people like you decided to stop eating meat it would affect the cattle industry. Sorry we cant speed up capitalism for you. But your answer your question, if enough people stopped eating meat, then yes the suffering of many animals would stop…over time.

He’s got the right idea - i would and will kill some one i catch torturing an animal
Eating animals for food != torture you dipshit.
There is a tasty middle ground! EAting free range, non-hormonal/anti-biotic free meats. I get all my meat at whole foods. All quality meat-Humanely brought to slaughter-And you truly can taste the difference. Also eating meat that you hunt would not really be torturing animals. unless you are a cappy shot. I myself have never hunted and am kind of opposed to it but it does serve its purpose with a tasty outcome, venison tenderloin and jerky, wild boar…

Vegetables are also living and bred for food, and farmers get money too, especially since organic is more expensive

…Dear PW.
I very much agree. But let us not forget that the 95 to 99% of MMA fans are a bit too short to understand that or anything just or proper at all. It is especially true provided that most of them are american (I make an exception for people like you, mr. Danzig and so on). It is naïve to expect otherwise from zealots of emilianenko, sylvia, couture (I’ve done an extensive research on the matter) and similar scum (I come to suspect that half of the whole UFC scene is composed of degenerates, e.g., the subspecies “homo debilis”, to paraphrase - those who enjoy hunting among other inexcusable and vulgar rubbish). But let me compliment you on your knowledge and express my full appreciation of your attempt at civilising the hopelessly uncivilised. I see, you ‘re more of an optimist there than I am.
For the enquiries of some, I’m a vegetarian; a boxer with a right that could floor about anybody (and I’d be but very eager to plant a good one on the hideous chin or empty temple of sylvia or his likes if I came across any one here in Europe).
Some here suggest certain dangers associated with vegetarianism: one should do his utmost to protect his little backward world with his revolting, savage principles. Well, perhaps Einstein, da Vinci, Tesla, Newton, Plato, Socrates (the list of superior men is quite a bit longer - spare me naming them all) suffered the sort of brain damage referred to by some of the posters here. In that case, the stock whose daily vocabulary is limited to “fuck”, “gay”, “kid”, “guy”, “it was like…wow!” and so on - is the sole category of people whose mental perfection stands beyond all doubt.
But then again - Lion’s strength is intrinsic (translated from Latin), and a convinced plebeian is a plebeian for life: a cocroach is deemed to stay a cocroach…

cordially.

Unum, sed Leonem

Danzig stands out as a class-act in a sport with a stigma. Unfortuntunately some leaving angry comments only perpetuate that stigma.

All I can hear is jealous meat eaters that would love to be in his place.
It is proven over and over again that a vegetarian based diet has improved performance, health, and many other reasons. Get your education and read up.
Carl Lewis the 9 times Olympic athlete bet his own records when he began a vegan.
