No rest for weary MMA fans.
If UFC 79: “Nemesis” and the IFL Grand Prix Finals didn’t quench your thirst for combat sports this weekend then there’s still more to come.
Yarennoka! — also known as “Fedor Returns” — will be broadcast live on the HDNet network at 6 a.m. ET on Monday, December 31. It’s super early, however, there’s no excuse not to set the DVR today if you receive the HDNet network.
The New Year’s Eve show will take place at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. Pride FC Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko will headline the show against the gigantic Korean, Hong Man Choi.
The rest of the card is filled with a nice line up of fights, which would have been made even better if Gesias “JZ Calvan” Calvancante was going up against Aoki as originally thought.
Regardless, there are some great fighters competing on this card. Catch it if you can.
Update: Results are in — click the jump below to get the skinny.
In shocking news (sarcasm), Fedor Emelianenko defeated Hong Man Choi via submission (armbar) in round one. By all accounts it seemed rather easy as expected.
Here are the rest of the results:
Shin’ya Aoki defeated Bu-Kyung Jung via unanimous decision
Hayato “Mach” Sakurai defeated Hidehiko Hasegawa via unanimous decision
Kazuo Misaki defeated Yoshihiro Akiyama via technical knockout (strikes) in round one
Mitsuhiro Ishida defeats Gilbert Melendez via unanimous decision
Makoto Takimoto defeated Murilo Bustamante via split decision
Tatsuya Kawajiri defeated Luiz Azeredo via unanimous decision
Mike Russow defeated Roman Zentsov via submission (armbar) in round one
Thanks to Sherdog.com for the up-to-date results.

I’m the first! The only fight that I have any interest in for that line up is the Fedor fight.
im not interested in watching minor league baseball or arena football unless you are there in person. so i don’t think i’ll be catching this one either.
I actually thought about getting this HDnet thing… just to see this fight. Then it hit me…why is Fedor not fighting Randy… forget it.. I’ll check the funny pages to see who won. What a Joke.
Fedor is still the best fighter in the world. He’s 6 foot 224 and beats up much bigger fighters. Zulu, sam shultz and soon to be this guy.
P.S. Dana’s cheap.

yeah, but these fighters are a joke, just look at their records, maybe fedor should fight giant silva next lol. anyhow, i still feel that fedor IS NUMBER ONE, it’s just too bad he won’t remain number one because he won’t be fighting ppl with much skills. Maybe if they give him antonio silva, then it should be interesting, or barnett. but I still think randy is a punk for not fulfilling his contract either, both fighters are in the wrong here, not just fedor. I’ll download this card, can’t watch it here in brazil
Fedors dead, this fight isnt happening
UFC isnt the only mma company out there, if u guys havent noticed. This event is as close to PRIDE as it gets and has some quality fights on its card featuring many mma fighters who could make noise in the UFC like Shinya Akoi, Gilbert Melendez, Murilo Bustamante (former UFC LHW champion), Kawajiri, Mach Sakurai, luiz Azeredo, Ishida and Akiyama. Fedor maybe fighting a can, but how can u really tell? Fedor has made everyone he has ever fought look like a can, so in this upcomming fight will anyone be able to tell the difference between Hong Man Choi and Noguerra? No, because all opponents look the same when Fedor is on top Mauling them with his World Class ground n Pound.
To just dismiss this card and call it “minor league” or compare it to arena football just shows your mma ignorance.
To be honest, as an overall card this is much better then UFC 79 which would have been better if they only televised the Wand/Liddell and GSP/Hughes fights and didnt waste my time with that other crap, they tried to sell me as fights!
My cable provider is Dish Network….can any one tell me if HDNet channel is available on Dish Network?
Choi’s are is as big as fedors head!!! LOL! I still think fedor is going to destroy him but this truly is a freak show.
It would be hilarious if Fedor lost this fight… I really couldn’t care less to be honest
I hate to sound ignorant but are the two people in the picture fighting? and Is that picture real or photoshop? That chinese dude is huge.
Im not being funny if you know the answer please let me know thanks!!

My thoughts exactly. Highly unlikely of course, but it would be fitting.

Yes HDNet is available on Dish Network. Already have the HD-DVR set to record the 4am CT showing.
It is actually replaying at noon standard pacific time on HDnet where I live. Just letting you guys know.
as i have been saying in all the blogs here…….FEDOR IS A B.U.M….BUM,BUM,BUM!
I’m gonna laugh my ass off if Fedor loses. I think he might too.
I have dish network also can someone tell me if i have to order the channle hdnet or if i already have it? and also i dunno which channle number it is.
An open note to my Korean Brother from Another Mother, Choi Hong Man:
Dude - Please. You’re taller than my aunt standing on top of my mother. You kinda stand out. You don’t need the bleached hair. Leave the meshuggah haircuts for people like Tim Silva, and Heath Herring. Bad enough we gots to deal with Lil Kim Jong-Il, but now we have to have you looking like a mugatu?
Peace out, my brotha. And lay Fedor out with some Hadoken Kimchee farts, eh?

God it would be funny as hell if Fedor lost.I would love to hear all the bullshit excuses from Fedor fans.
You should be able to add the package that includes HDNet. I just happened to get a new LCD for the main room and upgraded to get DishHD which included HDNet. Its a good channel for MMA lovers with its HDNet fights and its weekly Inside MMA show.
fedor “can crusher” emelianenko will take this fight to the ground and armbar him in the first. Is there ANYTHING fedor wont do for money? I wouldent want to know. and lmao at the guy saying “fedor is so good. look at the size difference. he even beat zulu.” You are so clueless.

The funny shit to me..I have cable and just found out I have HDnet channel..yeah!! I`m Dvr`ing it. =p
That is big Korean dude..he makes Fedor like he is still in elementary school.
Choi looks like he could eat Fedor for breakfast. I understand why M-1 is holding this event in Japan, the main event is circus attraction. I don’t care how great of a fighter Fedor is, he’s a fool for even taking this fight, and I hope he loses.
LETS SAY FEDOR LOSES WHAT IS NEXT FOR M1? This whole brand is centered around fedor.
I would laugh and carry on if Fedor loses, sadly i will only hear about it because i would not give a hay penny to watch
Let’s see here….
Russian Fighter…..check
Blond fighter of ludicrous proportions….check
Fight so ridiculous Don King AND John Waters couldn’t come up with somehting nuttier….check
Wow - this is like “Rocky IV,” only crappier.
I’m surprised Fedor doesn’t want Big Red to be able to use knees.Although if Gigantor used a knee it looks like he’d send Fedor flying out of the ring. The only thing missing from that picture are a pair of clowns and some trained seals.
oh! fedor looks like hong man choi’s baby on that pic.
ok so now ppl are paying to see a russian face a GIANT ASIAN, JUTS MAKING SURE
Lets not forget the K-1 Dynamite event airing the same night as the Yakenora event. Notable fighters include Kid Yamamoto, Kazushi Sakuraba, Joachim Hansen, Kiyoshi Tamura, Bob Sapp, and Zulu. Too bad they are not airing this event besides in Asia countries. This card is not too shabby.
Fight Order:
1. U-18 tournament: HIROYA vs. Kizaemon Saiga
2. U-18 tournament: Kenji Kubo vs. Yudai
3. HERO’s 70 kg: Kazuyuki Miyata vs. Joachim Hansen
4. HERO’s 85 kg: Melvin Manhoef vs. Yosuke Nishijima
5. HERO’s MMA: Minowaman vs. Zulu
6. HERO’s MMA: Kiyoshi Tamura vs. Hideo Tokoro
7. U-18 tournament finals
8. K-1 rules: Musashi vs. Bernard Ackah
9. K-1 rules: Nicolas Pettas vs. Kim Young-Hyun
10. K-1 rules: Masato vs. Choi Yong-Soo
11. HERO’s MMA: Bob Sapp vs. Bobby Ologun
12. HERO’s MMA/135 pounds: Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto vs. Rani Yahya
13. HERO’s MMA/85 kg: Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Masakatsu Funaki
By the way, I saw Hong Man Choi in real life, he is freaking huge!
It should be a good show… I hope Fedor wins and tells his jap fans goodbye forever!!!! No more zulu type shows on NYEs
LETS SAY FEDOR LOSES WHAT IS NEXT FOR M1? This whole brand is centered around fedor.
If Fedor loses, I think M-1 will actually become more popular. Everyone will want to see Hong Man Choi maybe?
This fight isn’t really fair anyways. Choi probably weighs close to 400 pounds. I wont really hold it against Fedor if he loses. If Fedor does happen to win, I dont think there is anyone left skill wise except in the UFC, so they will have to find more freak shows for him to fight to keep it entertaining.
Does anyone know if M-1 has PRIDE rules, UFC rules or neither? Stomps? elbows? kicks on ground? ect…

Beating, big ,slow, uncordinated and UNSKILLED fighters is NOT what it takes to wear the badge of #1HW in the world. Recently beating guys, who have recently earned the position of, “top HWs” (did i mention recently, you can’t be #1 on past glory) is how you get crowned, “the best”. Unfortunatly for us fans, Fedor seems to shun such guys lately.
mmamania- you mention the IFL here, but its never really covered? whys that
i really hope fedor wins, and keeps wining until couture gets out of his contract and finally has the chance to show who the true champion is, a win which would rival any other win in mma, a win which would showcase randy schooling fedor, allowing couture to retire with grace and go down as the greatest of all time instead of going out with the current situation tarnishing his career, a fitting end to the ali of mma!!
Guys if you have this channel make sure and check out “Inside MMA” on Fridays.(replays alot over the week) Awesome show indeed.
Fedor ends the year of upsets by being K.O.d
does anyone know if its gonna be possible to watch this event online anywhere? cant get hdnet in the uk. cheers
unlikely hel get knocked out, hasnt that choi dude only knocked out one guy? its a farse!!

Fedor fans give as many excuses as Liddell Fans do. Its that way with everything, you stick up for what you believe in. To say that people shouldn’t is ignorant. It’s called being a fan.
With that aside, I think this fight is a joke. Choi is only a fighter because of his Acromegaly, he could get hurt badly as well.
I do wish Fedor would have went with the UFC, I imagine if he did there would far less “fedor sucks” talk.
My reaction when I saw that picture of Emelianenko and Hong Man Choi:
WTF! Man, that giant freak is huge!
Some of the comments here are unbelievable…
Why is all the talk about Fedor’s fight? It’s definitely not the only reason to watch this card…wake up people…look at the rest of the card. It’s MMA in HD with 6 top 10 fighters on the card…
and this isn’t the only MMA that HDNet has either…it’s loaded with MMA. When I see people say that they’re not ordering HDNet because Fedor isn’t fighting Randy all I can do is shake my head…lol.
Some sad excuses for MMA fans around here…

Because.. come on. That fight is just so ridiculous. Of course it’s gonna be the center of attention.
You’re right though, this card is definitely quality. Looking forward to Aoki, Sakurai, Melendez vs Ishida and Akiyama fights.
i would like to see fedor lose, but i dont think its gonna happen. hong man choi is big but he sucks ass. yeah, he has a win over akebono LOL my mother could knock that guy out. bottom line- big ass korean taps out.

I will agree with you that there are other great matches on this card, but be seious. The reason everyone is defecating on this promotion is the absolute joke of a headline fight this is. The UFC equivilent of this would be like andy Couture or Tim Sylvia fighting that Sao Palelei for the vacant title. IT is a joke and they have made a mockery of their pomotion by outting this fight as a headliner. The only sad excuse is is not the MMA fans here but the promotion that would try to bill this as a legitimate Headliner match. Lets be serious if Dana White try to sell you Tim Sylvia vs Sao Palelei as a legitimate headliner @ $39.99 you would espond the same way regardless of the undercards. Like you said there are most definitly some great undercards on this bill but when your money fight is Fedor vs. an MMA unknown with only 2 fights it cheapens the sport, the card, and the promotion in geneal, as well as insults the intelligence of us MMA fans.
I’m gonna laugh my ass off if Fedor loses. I think he might too.
I am so hoping he will loose. If he gets laid out, or just cant deal with his size strength wise on the floor, it will be great. Lets go Hong MAn Choi, via TKO strikes in the second.
Mania..
What happened to Ricardo Arona being on this card??
And what is Arona’s situation right now??
FEDOR WINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FEDOR WINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No surprise
What happened, how did Fedor win??
From http://www.mmatko.com/yarennoka-fight-results/
Fedor charges in and tries a take down but it was the Choi who came out the better. Fedor tries an armbar but Choi fought out and jabbed Fedor with some right hands. Fedor’s face is getting red from the jabs but he pounds Choi with a hard left and is again taken down. Fedor tries for an armbar. He’s got it really deep and Choi taps out. Quick but exciting win for Fedor. The fight finished in just under 2 minute. Look for fight Video later today. Will have it up as soon a possible.
What happened, how did Fedor win??
He won with an arm-bar under 2 mins into fight….
Fedor Emelianenko def. Hong Man Choi via submission (arm bar) at 1:49 of the first round.
Fedor by armbar.
Looks like his arm was broken? anyone else think that?
I’m watching live online baby. Fedor up next. Shin’ya Aoki just kicked some ass
Doesn’t look like there were any upsets. Ishida defeated Melendez by decision. That was the fight I was most interested in seeing. Can’t really call it an upset even though Melendez is highly regarded. Ishida has an impressive resume of fights.
Crap. Fedor would get OWNED by Randy 100%.
that man is huge!! his fists are the size of fedor’s head! but for some reason i see fedor smashing this guy in rd1
Choi reminds me of Jaws from the james bond movies! Big guy
that man is huge!! his fists are the size of fedor’s head! but for some reason i see fedor smashing this guy in rd1
the fight already happened’
Fedor won 1st round via armbar…
The only “smashing” that was done was by Hong Man Choi before Fedor submitted him..
Fedor needs to fight better competition!!
Fedor’s face was a mess. Any top UFC HW would open him up no probs.
its tough, in my opinion, for Fedor to maintain this aura if these are the stiffs he’s gonna go against. This was like watching someone wrestle a bear at the local fair. What’s next? Fedor vs. a lukewarm bowl of soup?

Well Pride itself is being exposed as not nearly as good as the UFC. There is a lot of romantic nostalgia for Pride but the reality has been proven lately.
