“I need to win this fight, it’s a very important fight to me and for this I wake up in the morning every day with this fight in my mind. It’s a great motivator for me because this time I’m training very, very hard for to give my best condition for this fight…. This is my first fight here, for this I’m training a lot because this is a very, very important fight to me. I need to win and I’m going to win because I’m training four times per day for four months for this fight and Chuck’s going to see my conditioning now.”
– Former Pride FC champion Wanderlei Silva talks about his preparation and mindset with FOXSports.com heading into his monster clash with Chuck Liddell at UFC 79: “Nemesis” on December 29 — that’s eight days away! UFC just sent around an email reminder to that effect, calling it a “Battle Years in the Making.” Considering its significance, has the UFC done a good job promoting this fight in particular and blockbuster pay-per-view (PPV) event in general? Or, is it falling short? Seems like there was much more of a buzz around other 2007 events such as UFC 68, UFC 71 and UFC 74.

Only way Silva is going to lose is if he gets too aggressive and charges at Liddell and he gets caught
Chucks goin to sleep in this fight. Its going to be a fun fight to watch, but it will be over in the first round. Wandi VS the winner of Forrest and Rampage.
Wandi was a great edge in the fact that he had seen what happened to Rampage/Silva/Shogun/Hendo from switching from pride to the ufc..added he trains at XCouture..Chuck IMO is in deep shit when they clear Wandi to attack him.
tough fight to call, i like both fighters, but i do see Chuck taking this one, either way i can see this fight being over in the first round with either guy getting the KO, but i would rather see it go a couple rounds
My biggest hope is the fight will live up to the hype. IMO Wandy is putting together a good game plan for Chuck. I doubt he’ll be stupid and charge in to get caught. I’m assuming he’s seen one or two of chucks fights.
Man Wandi is an ugly F*****
The end of Chuck’s days of glory is about to happen in 8 days… Unless, despite losing, Chuck puts out an awesome performance, which I personally doubt at this point in his stardom… er… career.
Don’t think htis one will be a slugfest like everyone thinks / hopes…
Sure there will be moments of letting loose but I picture 3 outcomes
Chuck by KO early on catching Wandy coming in hot
Wandy by Sub in the 2nd or 3rd
Wandy by UD
The reason there is not such a buzz is because there is nothing on the line here. Which ever guy losses here just gets knocked out of the top five contenders. Big Deal! Also I think everyone is predicting Pierre to dominate Hughes again.
UFC68 had Couture coming out of retirement to fight for the championship. That’s a big deal! UFC71 Liddel putting everything on the line against a Pride guy who had already beat him a couple years before. UFC 74 had the newly crowned champ who is 44 years old taking on a guy who just took the head off of one of the most feared strikers in world!
This one seems like it is a little easier to predict. Pierre is the new interim champ and Silva wins by KO.
I don’t think the UFC isn’t promoting it enough, I think the fight itself has just lost some of the interest it once had. It’s still a good fight and the UFC is promoting it the best they can IMO.
I dont see any submissions happening in this fight, it will finish with a KO or by UD,but id say wandi by KO or UD

Phil I would have to agree with you. Also, many fans on this site seem to think that wandy is only capable of fighting at his reckless, super-agressive pace. That isnt the case at all. Wanderlei fights likje that against opponents that he knows he can overwhelm and that dont pose much of a KO threat against him.
Almost everytime that he has fought against an opponent whose striking ability he had to respect, he fought very smart fights dishing out controlled chaos, by picking and choosing his spots to explode.
1. Against cro cop, in their first fight with modified K-1 rules, wanderlei fought really really smart. I was so impressed by his composure, his boxing and knowing when to explode against cro cop. The fight went to a decision and because there were no judges for that fight, it was called a Drwa, but everyone knows that was a victory for wanderlei against a Heavyweight K-1 striker of Cro cops caliber.
2. Against Mark Hunt who is a K-1 level striker, who out weighed him by like 60 lbs. Wanderlei also fought a smart fight, under controll, held is own, looked very impressive although he eventually lost that decision. It was one of his most impressive performance because he took lots of shots from the Massive hunt, stayed in the game and dished out plentty of his own.
Wanderlei knows he has to respect Chuck’s striking and Randy has definetly made him aware that his conventional style falls right in the hands of a counterstriking Liddell. With that being said Wanderlei will fight a smart fight, follow a mastergame plan that Couture probably put together, pick and choose when to drop bombs on Liddell and win via KO..
I have said it since the fight was announced. I cant see Chuck taking this one. I don’t know what it is but I can’t see it. We have seen the weakness of Chucks chin his last 2 fights. I mean Rampage TKOed him and Jardine dropped him in the second with a mean right hook. Even thought he recovered from Jardine’s hook we still know that he can be dropped. Yes Wandy got KTFO by Hendo (man that was a great punch) but I have never seen this kind of drive from Wandy and Chuck’s star seems to be dwindling. I like Chuck but I can’t see him winning this one. I hope it goes to the 3rd and its a war but i wanna see a definitive non submission win out of this fight. All I want for Christmas is for this fight to live up to the Hype.
Oh yeah and if were discussing predictions GSP owns Matt Hughes. I want to see Serra v GSP 2. Serra will get devastated, become a one and done champ and GSP can finally wipe that retarded smirk of Serras face. “Oh don’t clap for me … I’m such a great champ, oh stop it haha I’m so great” F*CK you Serra your a bitch and you know it. GSP Oh CANADA!
im not a chuck fan at all but…….like most pride fighters,,,,,looks like chuck gets back on the winning track again.
War Wandy!!!
nothing on the line here…that’s why this fight is kind of like “eh”…
I am worried about Wandy and this fight since most of the Pride fighters have come to the UFC an done shit. This shows the quality of talent in the UFC over Pride. This is why I am thinking Chucky, but I want to see them beat the shit out of each other before the Liddell KO win. I hoping to see Forest/Bonher style fight, that would be cool!

Excellent comment, John. It gets old that so many people think Wand is just going to mindlessly rush in with arms flailing. It’s ridiculous. Wand fights well-paced, smart battles. Even in the Rampage fights, Wand paced himself and had great defensive skill in the standup.
He’s gonna destroy Chucky!!!

I totally agree! here’s two examples of PRIDE fighters who had a lot of hype and didn’t do anything;
1. Anderson Silva, all he had done is win 5 straight fights by TKO or submission. (Two over Rich Franklin).
2. Rampage Jackson, just two wins. Come on guys if you’re just going to come over and win belts over top champions, you might as well not even come.
The pride fighters are clearly out matched. Mac Daddy i know you’ve done your research.
when chuck looks into silva’s eyes at the stare down he will began to know what kind of crazy mother f$%^er he is in the ring with. Wandy didnt get the nick name the “Axe Murderer” for nothing. ive been watching him destroy people in the ring for years. and to be honest chuck is in for it. he should have been smart and takin some time off from recieving the ko from rampage to let his brain heal because everyone say jardine drop chuck in that fight which is another minor blow to the brain. wandy took almost a full year off from his knockout to recover which is really smart if you want a long career in this sport. i can see the news reports already “Ice Man Shattered Again” Wandy win by ko.
Chuck has the most to loose here so I hope he’s prepared. Sure both of them have lost their last 2 fights, but this is Wandi’s first fight in the UFC so that can be used an as excuse. Chuck has no excuse if he looses. Not one!
Chuck better be more prepared for this fight than his last 2
im not a chuck fan at all but…….like most pride fighters,,,,,looks like chuck gets back on the winning track again.
like who rampage silva henderson nog
This is the best possible time for chuck vs wanderlie to happen.
Everything is on the line for these guys thier careers, thier livlihood and thier legacy’s. They both have everthing to lose espacially Chuck considering Silva just signed a four fight deal so you know he will be fighting again regardless but no mma fighter can afford a three fight losing streak. Its all or nothing for lidell and because of that you will see the best possible silva vs lidell fight ever.
Im sure alot of fans would have rather seen these two meet when they were both riegning champions but even if that fight did happen at that time it still wouldnt be as exciting as I think this fight is going to be, you have to hungry fighters that wont quit and when they clash in the octagon it will be special
what a difference 2 losses can make. a year ago everyone would be picking chuck to win. I don’t think we can count chuck out just yet. after all, his ko to rampage could have been a fluke, and, lets face it: chuck was hardly beaten up by Jardin-he lost, but not badly.
I just hope this fight doesn’t got to a decision.

LMAO
I really don’t think that the UFC did a good job promoting the fight. MMA fans have been looking forward to this fight for years, and what does the UFC do? They put the Wanderlei All Access on MTV8 at 4 in the morning. Not exactly the best way to introduce the Axe Murderer to the American fans that don’t know of him.
Chuck, you were a good champion. Your style is good against wrestlers, not strikers. Sorry Chuck you should have said good-bye after loosing to rampage.(2nd time)
I agree Violent Mike. The UFC has not done enough to familiarize fans with Wandi. So in that respect we are in total agreement, but they have put other names on the card for the casual fans to buy into the PPV. Hughes v GSP will be enough to draw the casual American fans, and guys like Wandi and Sokodjou will excite more hardcore MMA fanatics. It will also be nice to see the return of Melvin Guillard and James Irvin, and I’m interested to see Manny Gamburyan in his Debut fight.
This really is one of the best cards I’ve seen in a while and it promises to be a great night of fights. And if you’re one of the people that dosen’t recognize guys like Soko and Wandi, you sure will know who they are after the fights.

Yeah… I know. Guys like Mirko Cro Cop came over here and dominated the competition. right? And who can forget Takanori Gomi running strait through ex-ufc product Nick Diaz. Or clay Guida getting smashed by Marcus Aurelio. Or the ever popular destruction of Forrest Griffin at the hands of Shogun… Wait… You mean to tell me that’s not how it happened?
While some Pride fighters have had success against thier UFC counterparts, most have not. Mirko has lost twice. Shogun was embarassed by a previously non-contender Forrest Griffin, and Shogun was considered by most people to be the best fighter in the world at 205 lbs. Marcus Aurelio and Takanori Gomi were both on the top of the 155 lb. food chain and saw similiar defeats to UFC fighters.
I agree that Anderson Silva has been dominant. I think he’ll remain champ for a while, but Rampage…. not so much. He’s only beaten one quality UFC fighter and that was chuck. Dan Henderson his other notable victory of 2007 is a former pride fighter and also a guy whose natural weight class is 185.
When it comes to the lighter weight classes the ufc has been dominant over the new pride competition. No pride lightweight has made an impact. And we’re yet to see a pride fighter work his way into the rankings at 170 (yes I know there was no welterweight division in Pride).
Anderson Silva has been awesome at 185, but it is the thinnest division in the UFC, probably in MMA across the board. I mean Paulo Filho is considered to be the #2 185er in the world and his last showing was unimpressive to say the leas.
At 205 lbs. Rampage does have the strap, but will he hold it against good competition? That is yet to be seen. He has chucks number no doubt, but winning the belt and making a defense against a 185 pound fighter is not that impressive… Rampage needs to hold onto that belt for a few fights before he is the real deal. The Henderson Rampage fight reminded me of Fedor v Lindland… The bigger guy won because… well he was bigger.
At Heavyweight Pride has given us a series of dissappointments starting with Jeff Monsons thrashing of Iron Head Fujita. Then Heath “kiss me I’m beautiful Herring lost to Jake “No ones ever heard of me” O’brien. Then Prides #2 heavyweight won a pity decision over the same unimpressive Herring. Now he gets a shot at the title against Chewbacca? don’t get me wrong I hate Tim Silvia as much as the next fight fan, but theres no way that big nog is going to win that fight.
Esteban I’m sure you did your research.
Personally I’m just glad that the UFC has absorbed as much of the quality talent from Pride after the merger as they could. It means better fights for all of us. It will take years for there to be a true winner crowned in the UFC v Pride arguement, but as of right now you have to give the edge to the UFC…
Oh yeah… and Soko will lose to Machida.
Does anyone knoe if its ppv in britain? there has been no adverts or promotion, not like the liddell v Ortiz fight! Il be gutted if we dont get it live, just like most of the events we get them on the sunday night, not good enough! Why on earth dont we get the opportunity to get these events, its annoying cos i love my ufc! plus iv saw the last couple of results on the internet before even seeing the fight, it just ruins the fight excitement!!
Im raring for this card, I agree that Wandi is a very methodical and excitingly skilled fighter, however there are far too many counting out the iceman in this one!! I also think hughes could pull it off, great fights tho!!
Only way Silva is going to lose is if he gets too aggressive and charges at Liddell and he gets caught
Man dude that is 100% correct… and with the chute box style of always moving forward that is very possible..That to me is the reason why rampage stuck his hands out in the middle of the octagon calling out chuck right b4 chuck came in and got caught…you just never know.
i think Wandy will be over whelmed by the ufc popularity and how big it has gotten.all the lights screaming fans.Wandy fought in the ufc when like the crowd was only like 1000 people. i dont think he’s fought under those conditions and to Chuck its just another day at the office.Wandy’s nerves will get to him.i believe this will be the start of a 3 or 4 fight winning streak for the iceman then he’ll retire.oh, and guys i won’t expect a 1st rnd ko, cause i think both fighters will just be feeling one another out in the 1st rnd.Iceman ko in late 2nd or 3rd rnd!!! put your $ on it.
jdawg at pride fights there where way more people there than at any ufc event. Wandy will be ready!!!
All of you here sound the exact same way as when Shogun was going to fight Griffin, the exact same comments about Silva kicking ass and the exact comments about Liddell getting destroyed, IN FACT we’ll see what Silva does in the cage, let us hope he does not do a “Shogun”.

On the same subject of UFC PPV’s in England- I am actually going to be in London during this holiday season, and I really would like to watch Nemesis live in a sports bar, big screen, a few beers and some good friends, the whole deal, but… could any brits here give me some advice on where should I be looking? I heard you guys over there get the PPV’s on Bravo the following day, but are there no bars showing the event live? Would hate finding out about the results before I watched the fights.
Wand will pick him apart like Rampage and Jardine. And like Rampage, Wand will put Chuck to sleep. He will fight smart and out strike him.
Former Pride fighters will have 3 UFC belts in 2008. Big Nog HW champ. Rampage or Wand LHW champ. Hendo or Silva MW champ. The cream always rises to the top. Shogun will be back in 2008. He came to the UFC thinking Forrest would be easy and he ran out of gas. That would make anyone look like a bum. Shogun wont make that mistake again. One bad fight doesnt take away the amazing victories a guy had in his recent past.
Crocop didnt adjust well at all, and Nakumara looked bad, and I call Shoguns loss a fluke. Fedor will destroy Couture when they fight. There was a reason why Pride was the #1 org in the world. Most of the best talent was there. Back in 2003 when there was the Pride vs UFC tournament in Japan, the UFC was spanked. People should do some research before they slam what Pride was.
All I have to say is, the UFC tests for roids….
Chucky back in the winners circle.
Hey Mania,
Did the betting odds for UFC 79 come out yet? I’m thinking Chuck Liddell will be a slight underdog in the fight. I’m also wondering what’s the action on the Hughes/GSP 3 fight.
Thanks Mania.

First off Pride fighters do not have 3 belts. Big nog is not the HW champ, and if you think he’ll beat Silvia you’re crazy. I hate Silvia as much as the next guy, but I give Big Nog little to no chance of beating Chewbacca. So technically Pride owns only 2 belts. Anderson Silva is dominant you’re right, but the middleweight division is the weakest in the UFC and maybe MMA as a whole as far as talent is concerned. And you’re right Rampage does have the LHW belt, and while theres no doubt he has chucks number, Liddell is the only quality win he has in the UFC. Marvin Eastman is a pushover, and Hendo’s natural weight is 185. And while these two guys have flourished in the UFC, they are the exception rather than the rule.
Some big names have come to the UFC and gotten spanked. Everyone thought Mirko would roll over everyone in the “weak” HW division in the UFC, but what happened. Shogun, Gomi, Aurelio, Fujita, Okami, Mashima. These were the golden boys of pride (Fedor being the obvious exception) that fought UFC fighters in the past year and lost!
All the UFC vs. Pride banter is really getting old. There is no more pride. All the Pride fighters have either been signed by the UFC or absorbed by the smaller shows. The guy who wins the fight is the last man standing right? Well Pride is gone, so who wins now.
Us the UFC fans. We win. We get to see match-ups that we’ve dreamed about for years. Pride vs. UFC…. it doesn’t matter.
And by the way Chris…. there was no pride vs. ufc tournament in 2003. Liddell fought in the pride GP in 2003, but there was no pride vs. ufc tournament.
I don’t know staggerlee. I see Soko as a Houston Alexander type of fighter. He comes out and tries to end the fight early, but we don’t know how he’ll fight in the later rounds. No doubt He’s a nasty fighter, but I see Machida winning rounds 2 and 3 and coming away with a split decision. I’m definitely a fan of Soko, but I have to give the nod to Machida in this one… Vegas also has Machida as a slight favorite… Either way should be a great fight.
Iceman wins by ko
nothing on the line here…that’s why this fight is kind of like “eh”…
I don’t know if I’d say there is nothing on the line. You do realize that it will be 3 strikes in a row for one of these guys. They both know they have to win BAD. This could very easily be a Kos ,Diego fight , with both of them terrified of losing.

Where’s Gomi’s name in all of this? NOWHERE, because his A$$ would get owned by BJ PENN AGAIN.

That reply to Chris was very well put. Good Job.

Or they might have 0 belts. You would have a better argument if you waited until a Pride fighter, other than Rampage or Silva actually won a fight. Two former Pride fighters are wining, the rest are Losing!

Chucky back in the winners circle.
This is a good point, Wandy was juiced in Pride. Big disadvantage , now that he can’t crank. Look how a smaller, weaker and less agressive Showgun performed. I was not happy with his performance.lol
Wandy is ready, bye bye Chuck.
Chuck is ready, bye bye Ape.
Ape……that’s hilarious.
BELFORT WOULD BEAT THEM ALL!!!!!!
Chuck wins. Randy cant take hes JUICE and got beat. Liddell is a bad man. Fair play to Randy for taking some hard hits though.
Only three pride fighters are as good if not better than they were in pride
1. Rampage
2. Cro Cop
3. Anderson Silva
Well done Chuck you proved the haters wrong.
