Big John Interview MMA referee

Props: TSN.ca

Note: McCarthy’s UFC 79 predictions include Wanderlei Silva and Georges St. Pierre. Interesting.

(Thanks to MMAmania reader “john” for the assist.)

I’m really surprised that he’s predicting the AxeMurderer. I am too (predicting him), but I thought that he and IceMan were buddies, so I thought he’d predict him.

Nice..Big John and I are on the same page as ufc 79 main events picks..he also feels it’s a bad move on a marketing stand point to set up Brock vs Mir…

on a side note I hope tell drug test brock first. It looks like Sean Sherk’s whole body is just his neck.

I’ve wondered about the Frank Mir match since they announced it myself. It almost makes me think they just want to make an example of a WWE guy. Either that or Brock really is a whole lot better then we think.

No surprise about Nick Diaz being the biggest trash talker :)

Yup, always liked the guy, now like him even better. A true gentleman, and knowledgeable as heck about his stuff. Will be missed in the octagon, but I wish him all the best in anything he does.

Agreed. Super likable guy. Best ref in the business. I think all of us fans will miss him reffing the matches. He made a lot of the fights better just by pushing the guys to press the action.

I think big John is the only ref in UFC history to give a fighter a bloody nose during a fight.it was one of Darrel Johnston’s fights waaaaaaay back when UFC was young.

So he would like to eliminate knees to the head? That would with out question end Wanderlei Silva’s career.

I wish we could hear some of the stuff Nick Diaz said in the ring. I like the fighter but trash talk is for suckers.

Actually they asked what rule would you like to see removed and he said knees to the head refreshing to know that some one like John McCarthy feels that way too if you allow knees to the head and kicks to downed opponet you virtually reduce decisions in half because the fighters would have no position to retreat to. With the current rules fighters intentionally drop one knee to avoid knees and they retreat to like a turtle position to avoid strikes kicks and knees.

Even in Pride there was never a fatal injury so whats the damn problem

FUNNY INTERVIEW, I don’t think Chuck’s 1 dimensional, he just chooses to stand… Wanderlei will not take him down successfully… CHUCK wins KO.. straight down the pipeline.

Gee, I don’t know whose opinion I should trust, yours or Big John’s. You don’t have to agree with everything he says, but I wouldn’t call any of his analyses “funny”. Big John knows the game in and out. Chuck’s 1-dimensional game got exposed when he fought Jardine (it didn’t happen against Rampage, he just got caught). Chuck was awesome when his strength and speed was at its peak, but his age is catching up to him, and unlike Randy, he hasn’t shown the versatility to adapt his game. Everybody knows that the best counter for a body kick is a takedown, but Chuck never did it and ate kick after kick. So, it’s either Chuck is 1-dimensional and wanted no part of the ground game, or he is a total idiot. Which one is it? I’d say it’s the former.

While Wanderlei might win, he is not going to take Chuck down. Wand isn’t half the wrestler Chuck is. That said, Wand might knock him out in the first round. I’ll be rooting for Chuck though.

Com’on Patty where’s your sense of humor that was kinda funny wasnt it?… also, Chuck WRESTLED 4 yrs in high school and 4yr of DIV 1 WRESTLING at Cal Poly… so what make you think Chuck cant shoot a double leg takedown???? I’m not defending Chuck… but I agree he should keep it standing no matter what… he’s not had a lot of success on the ground.. he gets tired quickly so his cardio has never been that good.

Chuck fought Rampage when Chucky was younger but Ramapge has a steel jaw,,, eventually Chuck got tired with all the grappling and punching in their first fight and Rampage dominated him. Jardine just put in a gutsy performance and manage to withstand Chucks punches until Chuck got tired. Chucks not 1 dimensional, but his cardio sucks and he rather keep it standing so he doesn’t get tired and can KO guys from there… however you do make 1 point I agree with… he’s getting older and he’s slowing down.

Chuck’s wrestling defense is too good for Wanderlei, he’s not know for his great wrestling, but wide looping style strikes.. I believe Chuck will catch Wanderlei and KO him.

In 2001 when dana and lerenzo bought the ufc it was not sanctioned anywhere in the US so they added that rule along with others shortly after in order to get sanctioned by the athletic commisions. You have to have some of the new rules for fighters saftey but the knee rule and kick rule are bad for the sport.

Big John should start his own camp/school for referees. The name of it should be “Let’s git it on, with Big John”. New Jersey refs suck ass!!!! (UFC 78 is the perfect example)
