American Gladiators Gina Carano
Props: NBC.com

“American Gladiators” will return to the airwaves on Sunday, January 6 at 9 p.m. ET on the NBC network. Carano currently competes under the EliteXC banner. Her nickname on the show is “Crush,” which may or may not be better than her real-world moniker, “Conviction.”

Good for Gina. She deserves the exposure. She can kick some serious ass, and now she’s working on her ground game at Xtreme Couture. Any time up until about a year ago if someone told me that girls would be fighting mma in the usa, and there was one girl that was very dominant, I would expect some diesel, butch dyke. But no, instead we get the sexy Gina Carano.

In the most recent commercial for American Gladiator it said featuring Lelei Ali and Hulk Hogan. Are the both hosts, or is Ali a gladiator?

Violent Mike - Ali and Hulk are both hosts. Hulk can’t read lines for shit, but Ali is pretty good.

Off Topic yesterday I found a great website that shows all mma fights: K-1, Pride, UFC. I got to watch Tito fight wanderlei for the 1st time. I though Tito was tough back then but wanderlei rocked Tito with an uppercut, and I swear Tito turned his back and ran full speed to the other end of the cage with wandy chasing him at full speed….It was the funniest ting I have ever seen in mma!

I watched her as she hit the mitts and let me tell you,,,,she was connecting big time.

The UFC and other promotions did MMA a disservice by not incorporating women’s MMA. Promoting gender equality from the beginning would have strengthened MMA’s fight for legitimacy as a sport, broadened its marketing base and popular support, and created a normative atmosphere and infrastructure for women’s MMA.

It is lamentable that Gina would put her fighting career on hold to be on American Gladiators; however, it is understandable. Had she and other women been promoted and paid like their male counterparts, Gina would have likely declined the show. As an emerging face of women’s MMA, her departure hurts the sport.

While Gina is talented, sadly, her popularity was never based entirely on her martial prowess. The image of the beauty-queen athlete, with moderate abilities and marketable sex appeal, is a well documented phenomenon:

http://books.google.com/books?id=ez9hGz0FKMEC&pg=PA139&lpg=PA139&dq=“the model of the athlete as beauty queen”&source=web&ots=TuqRIbZqqW&sig=1n761QanUo5sOZXYOhOE846Sxew

Promotions like Smackgirl, Bodog and EliteXC are on the right track but a lot more needs to be done to showcase these gifted fighters. Dana and the UFC may be forced to rethink their position on women’s MMA in the future.

Khemtawe: while I applaud your efforts toward gender equality, you’re barking up the wrong tree. Gender equality in sports has NEVER been any source of legitimacy of a sport. Almost nobody cares about WNBA. There is no WMLB or WNFL. Plain and simple, most people care about women in sports about as much as they care about men in modeling. There are very clear genetic differences that make women in sports not compelling, and those differences are in the observer, not in the athlete.

i bet all the guys who have ever seen her fight would be too scared to ask her on a date

one wrong word and youd be in the hospital being laughed at by cops when you tried to explain what had happened

dana is definitely right that the casual mma fan isnt ready for women fighting. jackasses like senator john mccain would have a field day if the ufc broadcast it

men vs women isnt on
imagine what guys at 140 would do to that pretty face

the public isnt interested in womens sport
michelle wie wants to compete in mens golf for that reason
it is possibly the only true sport where women stand a chance and they are still at a massive power disadvantage(darts snooker etc arent really sports they are pub games)

if women get better and are knocking each other out with brutal ground and pound theres a good chance of a serious injury as a mismatch fight is far more likely to occur than at the top of mens mma

iv quickly checked that gina isnt stood behind me while im typing this… all the hype is down to looks… it almost always is with sportwomen…

anna kournikova is 100 times more famous and recoognisable than the most dominant woman tennis player over the last 5 years (justine henin)and kournikova probably hasnt even lifted a racket in that period

Had there been women, as fighters, promoters, and managers in the MMA’s initial stages, I think that MMA would not have been perceived with as great of a barbaric image and that would have contributed to MMA’s legitimacy in the world of public opinion.

There are no genetic differences in the observers you are referring to that would cause them not to support women’s sports. Many are socialized to view women’s sports as less compelling, or men’s sports as superior.

For instance, if there were women participants at the first UFC shows (which were many US fans’ introduction to MMA), by today UFC fans would be socialized to expect to see them and there would be a much greater enthusiasm for women’s MMA in the US. By now there would be female legends of MMA who would be mentioned in the same breath as Severn and Gracie.

Today it would take a strong marketing campaign to begin to socialize MMA fans, especially those with misogynistic views, to see women’s MMA as equal to men’s MMA. But if promoters can market Bisping vs Evans to people, or Fedor vs Hong Man Choi, surely they can market bouts featuring world-class women fighters.

No one said that womens MMA would be better. The point Dana had made himself and that he should be pushing now is that MMA is less brutal than boxing. I would expect womens MMA to be more technical and less physical than the men’s. Much like womens basketball. Hell you might even like it.
And pretty faces getting scarred up is part of life. Roger Huerta isn’t told not to fight just because he’s got a pretty face.

Dana doesn’t have women in the UFC (besides the ring girls) because there aren’t enough top talents to support it. Gina is ONE girl (albeit, very pretty and very marketable), but that isn’t enough to start an entire division. And what about weight classes? They would water down women’s MMA even more. Furthermore, it would take away opportunities of men that have been training for far longer. Just think, the last Okami vs. McDonald fight was not even shown. Now imagine it not even happening because two chicks (who don’t look like Gina) are going at it with their braids and acne flying and spraying everywhere. YUCK! Remember, most (really all other)MMA chicks don’t look like Gina.

Good point. I don’t think Dana should be in the womens MMA buisness ether. My point was that he said they specifically should not be in MMA. All he needs to say is that women in there own MMA forum would be fine. It would add a lot of legitimacy to his claim the MMA is a real sport.
