“I’m not fighting for 6, 7, 8 months. I did everything I could this year, I tried to keep helping promote the sport, keep making it grow, but I think I didn’t get a lot of R&R. I trained through Thanksgiving for this fight, I didn’t even go home to Texas to spend time with my family. I think I’m going to take some time off. You know the truth is I need to finish school too. I fought 5 times this year and I think that’s the most anybody’s ever done in the UFC and I think I’m going to take some time off.”
Lightweight phenom Roger “El Matador” Huerta reveals he’s burned out from a frantic 2007 and looks to regroup after his epic battle against Clay “The Carpenter” Guida at UFC’s Ultimate Fighter Finale 6.

If anyone deserves a break, it is him. 5 fights in one year, six in the past 15 months. He last fight should be fight of the year
I say good luck, I mean he wants to pursue his degree and relax for a few months. Wish him all the best. He gave us some nice shows this year and he wouldn’t even get a title shot probably until the late summer of 2008 anyway. Frankly it is smart that he waits it out and let’s the 155 pound sort itself out.
Figure it like this, when he comes back, he can take on Kenny Florian.
Jan 2008 - BJ Penn vs. Joe Stevenson
April 2008 - Winner vs. Sean Sherk
July 2008 - Roger Huerta vs. Kenny Florian
Fall 2008 - A possible title fight between Sean Sherk who will be the champion versus winner of Huerta / Florian
Again all sepculation but from the sounds of this, Huerta is definitly going to be taking a few months off. In the mean time we will see Penn/Stevenson/Sherk get the title in order. Maybe Kenny Florian can rough up Frank Edgar in the mean time.
Man,
If he was only a title holder… I feel for him, I bet he dosnt even RECV a 4 figure paycheck per fight… Poor guy, take a break and well see you come back and fight KenFlo for a title shot… *praying*

totally agree.
this is good for him. im glad to see he’s taking some time off. it’ll make it more exciting when he returns to action against some top contenders.
If anyone deserves it, he does. Five fights, two of them were FOY quality. I respect that he still wants to go to school. Why not pursue an education while you’re out of action.
good for him. no use in risking his health or record when the belt is in queue for another 6 months.

I like the Edgar/Florian idea, but the winner of that fight should fight for the belt. Tyson Griffin would be a great opponent for Huerta.

Totally agree on all of the Huerta comments. But I wouldn’t be so fast to claim that Sherk will beat Penn/Stevenson. I think those guys will fare well against him.
I was hoping to see him fight Kenflo sooner rather than later, but I agree with all of you above. 5 fights -2 of which are of the best of 2007. He deserves time off and maybe all the “Huaters” will find something else to do for awhile. And good for him for finishing up his degree.

I don’t think Edgar should be fighting for the belt that soon, maybe if he beats his next 2 opponents.

He is earning $18k per fight purse and bonuses

Got that right. His purse went up 2-4k per fight with every fight too. And of course he got his win bonuses and 2 20-40k fight of the night bonuses. Not too shabby.
I bet you he is going to take 3 months off.. get bored and he will be right back in the mix.
Hey guys, the UFC 79 site is up and running. Thought you would like to know, if you didnt already.
That sucks, I would like to see him back real soon. That last fight was very impressive for both him and Guida.
All of the prospective fights in the lw division are all kick ass great match ups. Kenflo, Edgar, Tyson, Penn, Huerta, Stevenson- not a scrub in sight. I love this division.

I disagree, Roger should get a title shot his next fight, without Ken Flow. Ken Flow has fought 8 times in the UFC and lost 2 of them. He has had a title shot 4 fights ago a lost. His last 3 fights have all so been a little weak. Din, Alvin, and Dokonjonsuke (I think I spelled that right). Roger has been doing nothing but beating people up. His recode speaks for its self!!!
Great year for Huerta, I hope he gets the needed rest and comes back even stronger! Congratulations on a perfect season and finishing his degree!
good for him. no use in risking his health or record when the belt is in queue for another 6 months.
Very well put and to the point. The only plausible opponens for Huerta at this time are Kenny Florian, Tyson Griffin, and Frankie Edgar. If he fought anyone of those guys in Feb/March, it wouldn’t even be for the #1 contendership, because like you said, that situation is tied up right now with Sherk/Penn/Stevenson.
Unfortunately, I can imagine it already. Two weeks before Sherk is set to fight Penn/Stevenson, he gets injured training and pulls out of the fight. It wouldn’t be a first.

LOL, I can’t believe it took that long for somone to point that out. Sherk over Penn is no guarantee.
Seriously, how would the fight go? Sherk does one thing, put you on your back. BJ is as good as BJJ as it gets - he is most dangerous off of his back. So Sean Sherk will try and lay on top of Penn and not get submitted for 25 minutes in hopes of winning a decision. Meanwhile, Penn will be on the bottom working his submission game the whole time. Given 25 minutes, I’d like to think that BJ would be able to put you to sleep, no matter who you are in the 155-170 weightclass.
get back soon so you can lose to florian

Who has Roger beat before he fought Clay Guida?
12/08/2007 Win Clay Guida The Ultimate Fighter 6 Finale Submission (Rear Naked Choke) 3 0:51
8/25/2007 Win Alberto Crane UFC 74: Respect TKO (Strikes) 3 1:50
6/23/2007 Win Doug Evans The Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale TKO (Strikes) 2 3:30
4/7/2007 Win Leonard Garcia UFC 69: Shootout Decision (Unanimous) 3 5:00
2/3/2007 Win John Halverson UFC 67: All or Nothing TKO (Strikes) 1 0:19
9/23/2006 Win Jason Dent UFC 63: Hughes vs Penn Decision (Unanimous) 3 5:00
these wins over fighters that were mostly making their ufc debut doesn’t grant Roger Huerta a title shot. Clay is the only Shark on this list..I think it would be right for there to be a number 1 contender match..and KenFlo..earned his spot.

this guy is smart, he ended the year with a big test and he passed there is no point having another fight if it isnt against a top contender it would be very risky, and he gets the rest he needs for his body while the LW division is set up for 08 and what better way than not just bum around, the guy is gonna finish his business degree in his time off, damn this guy is a very good roll model not only for mma fnas and future fighters but, for alot of troubled ppl out there. after he graduates he can come back and fight for #1 contender spot and then win the title by the end of 08 or beginning of 09.

dude kenflo got super lucky that din blew out his knee if anyone deserves a shot at kenflo is din he would kick his ass all over the place did you see how easily he pushed him off he is far stronger than kenny and will outstrike him, dont see florian submitting din this fight should happen before kenflo talks any more crap about how ppl should be afraid of him, spencer fisher, frankie edgar , huerta, guida, stevenson hell even mac danzing would beat up kenny.

I, like everyone else, have Kenny Florian sitting pretty, waiting for someone to emerge as worthy to fight him to be #1 contender once he championship situation is settled. But in all fairness to Roger Huerta, who has Kenny Florian beaten?
After losing the TUF finale to Diego, Kenny fought and beat (in order):
Alex Karalexis
Kit Cope
Sam Stout
(lost to Sherk)
Dokonjonosuke Mishima
Alvin Robinson
Din Thomas
Din is the only real name on that list, and look how that fight ended. He won due to freak injury. Granted, Kenny finished every single one of his opponents (except for Sherk obviously), but why do we all have him as the clear cut contender to the LW belt? Tyson Griffin has had way tougher fights than KenFlo, yet he is a couple fights away from contendership. I guess it all boils down to - Look what a reality show can do for you.
Throw in Tyson Griffin in the mix as well, and don’t forget Danzig will be coming down to 155, but it would be a year until he fights the top guys. When Faber beats Pulver, he would have the 145lbs class dominated and maybe lateral to UFC? Avenge his loss to Griffin, and eventually a title shot? But that won’t be for a while since FAber is the face of the WEC. I don’t think Flo has a chance against Roger.
he deserves it but i think that much time off he’ll get bored…i say 4 months max lol

True that..true that.trutru that that that.
Let’s not speculate on who is better between Huerta and Florian because all in all they are very evenly skilled and should make for a great fight.
BJ Penn vs. Joe Stevenson
1. Sean Sherk
2. Kenny Florian
3. Roger Huerta
4. Frank Edgar
5. Tyson Griffen
In my post about who Kenny fought, keep in mind that his first couple of fights were at WW, not LW.
Seriously, why is my last comment not being posted? Is it because I mis-spelled ’somebody’ and typed ’somboyd’? Other than that, I can’t see anything critiquable about my post.
i was watching the edgar vs. griffin fight the other night on unleashed, dude, griffin has some tree trunks for legs, i have no idea how he makes weight at 155, built like a brick shit house…anyways i’d like to see edgar vs. kenflo, i know kenflo has some pretty good bjj, like to see how edgars wrestling matches up to it
This is a smart young fighter with big things ahead of him. He put in work this year and deserves a break….Good for him.

Roger is obviously smart. In about 8 months from now, Penn and Stevenson will have fought and the winner will have faced Sherk. Maybe he thinks that he will be next in line for a title shot at that time. Fighting between now and then could jeapordize that position.
Good job Roger, what amazing year that you have accomplished. You deserve the much needed time off and rest. Go be with your family and get your degree. This guy is an amazing person as well as fighter. Not for sure if everyone is completly aware of Huerta’s life story, but if your not look it up. He has gone through a ton of adversity throught his life. Dude is amazing to even still be alive. He is one of my favorite fighter, very elusive and explosive with a ton of heart and dedication. I mean how he ever regrouped from that shot from Guida and came back and won was a tribute to his training and heart. It was a pleasure to watch him live in Houston for UFC 69 Shootout against Garcia… Enjoy your time off Roger, hope you come back well rested and healed for that title shot that im sure you will get eventually in 08….
Give big bad Huerta to Tyson Griffin. Griffin will beat his ass. I don’t doubt that Mac Danzig can beat Heurta either.

Tap the breaks a bit there, Boss. Yes Ken has 2 losses in the UFC, but his first was against Diego at 170. Not this weight division. Just because you don’t like Florian doesn’t mean you get to throw logic out the window. There is a very good reason why Kenny and Sherk were the first to fight for the belt. And remember, he did pretty well in that fight when it was all said and done.
If anyone deserves a break, its this guy (repeat of what everyone said).
His last fight was sick and showed me that he may just be as good as the hype. I wouldn’t be calling for a title shot necessarily. Edgar has beaten better competition and KenFlo has shown that he deserves to be at the top. Let’s see if Huerta can take either one of them, or Tyson Griffin, before we talk title shot.
he will fight if the ufc calls in 4 months and asks him to fight florian in a number one contender match
Never a dull moment when this guy is in the octagon, fighters like Roger are the reason why I am an MMA fan.
I dunno about u guys, but I am looking forward to watch the replay of last weekends TUF Finale….I gotta Check out the War Machine/J-roc and Huerta/guida fights again!
I feel for the guy, he deserves a break.
i agree with all your posts. roger is a beast man, he fought 5 times this year, so he deserves a title shot but on the other hand just because he hasnt fought any body good before guida doesnt mean that he dont deserve one. i dont see bj, sherk, stevenson or that fag ass crybaby kenflo fighting 5 times this year. but oh i forgot as soon as someone fights a good name for the 1st time he is the man huh? roger is gonna be the champ!!!!! no questions asked.

is there different people manning the censor controls on different days?one day all my posts go right up than the next half of them get deleted.
How could anyone with half a brain not like Huerta?
I kinda aree with huerta…he is a good fighter and seems to get no respect….put him up against some top fighters and give this guy time to shine.

Yeah, it’s whoever gets the unlucky task of sifting through 5,000 spam posts that start with something like “Big Black Poles, Little White Holes”. You never know what the filter is going to catch but we’ll find it eventually.
“I fought 5 times this year and I think that’s the most anybody’s ever done in the UFC and I think I’m going to take some time off.”
I’ve got Royce Gracie with 9 in 1994.

He wild out!!! Good looking John..I just saw the report from Sao Paulo..if that is all true…he wild out..he f`d up..

Fall 2008 - A possible title fight between BJ Penn who will be the champion versus winner of Huerta / Florian
Again all sepculation but from the sounds of this, Huerta is definitly going to be taking a few months off. In the mean time we will see Penn/Stevenson/Sherk get the title in order. Maybe Kenny Florian can rough up Frank Edgar in the mean time.
totally agree.
I like the Edgar/Florian idea, but the winner of that fight should fight for the belt. Tyson Griffin would be a great opponent for Huerta.
I totally agree with you. i think kenny having built 3 fights already and edgar just hoped right next to him with a win with spence king. i say huerta/griffin to fight the the winner of sean sherk vs whoever is champion at that moment.
glad to see all the love for Huerta…he deserves it. Happy to see him taking time off, so we can see much more of Huerta in the future.

Huerta,… should take time off hit the books, get some chicks and train on his wrestling defense and offensive takedowns.. GL

I also just read that he was found dead in his jail cell in Brazil! I read it on mmaplayground.com! I’m not sure if it has been confirmed yeat.Crazy! I hope it’s not true.
dont forget nate diaz when naming names. i think he has the potential to be better than his brother nick.
i hope he is back by march or april, guida should fight joe lauzon or nate diaz or even cooler oand definatley a fight of the night, spencer fisher.
I have all the respect in the world for Huerta, easily had 2 of the most exciting fights this past year. But I sense another Karo Parisyan situation, wanting to sit and wait for a title shot/#1 contender bout to come to him. Nobody should have to fight 5 times a year in the UFC, but waiting 6-8 months is too long to put the Lightweight division in some sort of limbo… again.
roger huerta will beat ken flo no doubt about it
My God! How many fights does a person have to win to get a title shot when your a hispanic. This guy fought his heart out in every fight, they gave him the hardest competitors out there in the lightweight division and he whipped them all. Why should he have to fight stupid Kenny “Crybaby” Florian. Who in the crap is Kenny Florian? The Matador should get a title shot before BJ Penn or Joe Stevenson. Isn’t that the reason he fought 5 TIMES IN ONE YEAR? The winner of this fight should be fighting the winner of the Matador and Sherk. Dana has used and abused this great kid’s talent for income and then doesn’t even get a him title shot. This is the only sad thing about these sports that the fighters get the short end of the stick. Matador, I would recommend you getting a better manager of your time and talent! You are the real deal and when you fought Leonard Garcia and won, you gained all my respect because Leonard Garcia is another fighter who needs to find a better manager! Put your foot down with these punks and if you don’t get what you deserve at the UFC in the hearts of all the UFC fans, we know you are the one that is going to take Sean Sherk down like a clown and they are trying to wear you out so that doesn’t happen. They are scared of that boy losing his title, but he’s going down real soon.
i believe kenny “crybaby” florian should fight MAC DANZIG to see if he even belongs in thier level. make that happen! mac danzig will play with him like a baby girl!
Can’t wait for you to come back! go HUERTA!!
