“This sport is about winning. The reason why everybody is on the Patriots’ jock right now is because they’re undefeated. Everybody is on the Dallas Cowboys’ jock because they only got one loss. People like winners, and that’s what happened with Hughes and Penn and how they got their success. My most famous fights are the ones I lost, the ones against Hughes and St. Pierre. Those fights are the reasons why people know me, but I lost those fights. Well, people can’t get behind a loser, so for me to get the same type of popularity here at HDNet Fights, (the plan) is to keep winning.”
-Former UFC welterweight contender and current HDNet Fights headliner Frank “Twinkle Toes” Trigg offers Sherdog.com a sobering perspective on success and failure in mixed martial arts.

Twinkle Toe’s is a good announcer, but too prone to the choke out
Im still of the opinion that people like exciting fighters even if they lose. People know Triggs for those fights because “people” arent neccesarily mma fans, and only saw him there cause he was fighting popular fighters. The real fans were on MMA mania watching Triggs vs Lawler and being immpressed. The last thing we need is another Hughes who only cares about winning no matter what the cost. Now if you’re Anderson Silva and you can win and be exciting, hey!!
People don’t like Trigg because he’s an a-hole who runs his mouth. People only remember him getting choked out because he got RNCd his last 2-3 fights in the UFC. No one watches these B-leagues he fights in.
whos trigg? lol just kidding.

The CNBC special yesterday was really good. 1 part I find to be real intresting was SEG was banned from PPV’s..and was trying to get sactioned by NSAC to get put back on cable…SEG’s owner said they felt that they had the boards approval till he got a call around midnight that said 1 of the commisioner’s has changed his mind against the ufc. That comisioner was Lorenzo Ferrtita..(intresting at least) to later get a call from Dana..and Dana said I have some1 intrested in buying from you the ufc..he said let me have one guess ” Lorenzo Fertitta “..Dana ” How did you know “…how bizarre.
Overall I thought this segment was really good. Gave all points of view. The original outlook to todays.

DAMN, I forgot to set the DVR for that. Mania, do you know if they ever replay this, or no?
Frank Trigg is good for commentary, not the best, but not the worst either. He is also an exciting fighter. But like he says, he lost all of his ‘big fights’ so that is all most people know him for. People never think about HOW Frank Trigg got himself in the position to BE in those ‘big fights’. He did so by having a successful career, including wins.
His biggest victories include wins over Dennis Hallman (most known for beating up Hughes a couple times), Charuto aka Renato Verrisimo (BJ Penn’s BJJ trainer), and Mayhem Miller.
However, to Frank’s point, he does lose all of his big fights. Of course we all know the losses to Hughes (twice) and GSP, both by RNC, and most know he lost to Robbie Lawler recently. I just looked up his record, and he lost some other fights against some guys that are top dogs now. For example, Apirl ‘06 Carlos Condit beat him in just over a minute. Condit is the current WEC welterwieght champion. He is nasty, I am a fan of him of his since I first saw him fight in the WEC. Frank also fought and lost to Hayato Sakurai in 2000.
That is the exact type of record you would look for for a gatekeeper. I would welcome Frank Trigg back to the UFC as long as he knows that he will most likely never got a shot at the title, but he will be gatekeeper to the Top 10 of the division. A youngster coming off of TUF can test themselves and find out if they’re for real by facing Frank Trigg.

I don’t think even the best guys off any TUF series could immediately walk in and pose much of a threat to Trigg. Several of them, Sanchez, Leben and Koscheck come to mind immediately, have advanced to the point where they could challenge him now.
I think Trigg’s a good guy and a great fighter, but hollyshit dude, how much trash can you possibly talk before a fight in an attempt to hype it up? Trigg raises that bar pretty high.

ViolentMike: Great post. U made great points….What organization did Trigg fight Mach sakurai in?
He would make a real formidable gatekeeper. He is someone we could use to guage what level the young welterweights are at.
As an announcer I always thought Bas Rutten was the best, I enjoy listening to Frank Mir call fights, he breaks down the ground game beautifully. We get on Joe Rogans case a lot, but he is solid, he knows the game and sometimes he asks the tough questions, like when he didnt back down to grey maynard following the draw where he knocked himself out with the slam…..I am really starting to dislike Mike Goldberg…..Of course Randy was a great announcer who’s oppinion I valued highly when considering who to bet on. I won a lot of money this year listening to Randy. Its a shame that we probably wont get to hear him as a commentator any more now that he is Beefing with Dana and the UFC.

You make some good points ViolentMike, but I a think pw has got it right with Trigg’s skill level. He could handle any TUFs coming right off the show with no problem…I think only a couple of the WW alumni pose much of a threat to him. I think he is alot better than most give him credit. I dont see him as a gatekeeper in the UFC but more like a perennial top 5er. Plus, you can never count a guy out because of past performances, especially the way some fighters improve from year to year. Just because he lost to two dominant 70 pounders drop him from 3 to 10?? Or should we look at Rich Franklin as a gatekeeper at MW?? Trigg looked much better against Hughes (not GSP) than Franklin ever did against Silva.

That’s correct PW. I kinda worded it wrong. I didn’t mean to make it sound like a TUF fighter should face Trigg as thier first opponent, but rather put together a couple of wins and then face Trigg to find you where they really stand.
Thanks for pointing that out!

The fight took place in SHOOTO in December of 2000.

John your right..I’m a big Bas fan since I’ve seen him and Stephen quadros commentate for pridefc..but there is one time I really felt Joe Rogan could of asked that tuf question. To Bisping..after he technically lost to Hammil..Joe during the fight he was saying by the3rd round how Bispig doesn’t do something he will lose..we hear the verdict and he changes station..to how impressive Bisping looked and stuff against Hammil..IMO..dana’s censorship.

yEAH PhilQNY, Joe Rogan didnt ask the tough questions that night, I wish he would have but he was probably worried about an all out British Revolt. I was actually really surprised that he let him off the hook by not asking the questions we all wanted to hear, but for the most part Rogan is one of the better commentators….Time to replace Goldberg!!!!! I wouldnt mind replaceing Goldberg for stephan Quadros
The worst thing about Golberg is the stupid fist pump he does at the end of unleashed. That man is sucha cheesy douche. And the terrible comments and analogies during the fight! It get so bad sometimes I half expect Joe to just turn over and smack him upside the head. I agree that Bas is an excellent announcer. He is an even better self defense video personality. Seriously, check this out, I pissed myself laughing (PML) the first time I saw this:

Joe for sure should stay..but Goldberg..I don’t know how he got that job? The fight Professor would be a great addition to the panel..I wonder why doesn’t the ufc do like the NFL or NBA..how they have the commentators..expert analyists.. seeing just 2faces( with a ufc fighter here and there) just gets tired after awhile. When Goldberg pumps his first..smiles and says..” till next time inside the octogan”..I want to kick him thru my TV.

I still think that Dana and the UFC put a gag order on Rogan the moment the score cards were read in ENgland for the Bisping/Hamil fight.
Stephen Quadros??? I aboslutely can’t stand the fight professor!! Plus EliteXC puts him ugly, twitchy face on camera waaaaay too often. He has the stupidest and funniest facial expressions I have ever seen while listening to someone speak. They 3 announcers stand side by side, Quadros usually to the far left. He stares directly in the person’s face that is talking, twisting his body if he must. Complete dufus. Goldy gotta go, but to me, The Fight Professor is no upgrade!
Mania,
Who’s the person that screwed up the quotes??? The last paragraph is showing up as if the new poster said it. It happened the past several posts.
Mike Goldberg is the John Madden of mma, he is a morone who just babbles and never makes any sense….I love hearing Frank Caliendo make fun of John Madden and the senseless comments that come out of his mouth….

I think the only reason Trigg is known at all, is due to his huge and abrasive comments he makes out of no where.
Talk about stating the obvious.
Goldberg has been commentating for ufc forever, Big Jon, and bruce buffer and goldie are part of the history of ufc. You cant get rid of a guy like that, yea he makes some dumb comments at times but his voice is classic I never want to see him replaced. and he wont get replaced because he doesnt just call the fights he has the important role of including sponsers and marketing upcoming ufc events during the telacast.
And yes every fighter randy picked did win I think hes like 6 for 6.
I was just watching the HD fights wiegh in and no wonder UFC is the uncontested organization in MMA it was a joke fighters playing with each other instead of squaring off and other fighters eating food as they wiegh in a complete joke
I like everything about Trigg, I think his championship losses were due to inmaturity, I don’t have spell checker. If he were to fight those same fights now, he’d probably win. 1 to 2 years makes a big difference. I don’t mean any disrespect. It’s not that he’s prone to the choke, I’m sure he has a worthy choke defence now.
