UFC lightweight contender BJ Penn was fined $2,000 and sentenced to one year of probation today for striking a police officer during a Hawaiian bar brawl back in 2005, according to Hawaii’s own Honolulu Advertiser.
“The Prodigy” pleaded no-contest to the charges and struck a deal with prosecutors to avoid jail time. Penn, however, must still perform 50 hours of community service and submit to random drug testing.
The good news is that he’s permitted to participate in his upcoming UFC title match against Joe Stevenson at UFC 80: “Rapid Fire” in Newcastle, England, on January 19.
From Penn:
I want to thank the fans for the support and for sticking by me through thick and thin. It’s time to move on with my life and focus on my career. I’m glad it’s done.
Like most bar fights, details about the actual incident are a bit fuzzy. But the fact that Penn willingly took a plea deal coupled with the no-contact order for him and the officer involved leads me to believe that things got pretty heated between the two.
The original report alleges that Penn blindsided the policeman and fled the scene, only to be chased down on foot and tackled by the same officer.
No confirmation on whether Penn pulled guard or was captured because of a lack of cardio.

Did you hear that Sherk? “Punks” don’t have the balls to deck police officers! Lol!
lol loved the last part.
the in depth vids for ufc 79 are up on the ufc website mania.
Dang that sucks, ive heard so many different stories on this though who knows what actually happened, BJ seems to have changed alot since then though, that was back in his crazy days before he returned to the UFC. Lets hope that’s the end of it, and he can move on to become one of the greats of this sport.
Still gonna smash Sherk, in handcuffs or not.
Did you hear that Sherk? “Punks” don’t have the balls to deck police officers! Lol!
Umm, “punks” are exactly the type to do that. Especially if it was done in the described fashion, from behind. And it certainly wouldn’t take balls so much as a female portion of the anatomy. (Obviously, we don’t know how it went down. I don’t see BJ as hit-you-from-behind kind of guy then run away like a pansy.)
Anyone familiar with a plea like this with the no-contact order? Would this be something set up by BJ, basically to keep the police officer from trolling around and harrassing him? If so, smart move by BJ.
hilarious writeup.
I bet he pulled guard and went for a triangle choke. But who has the balls to deck a police officer.. thats just insane
“The original report alleges that Penn blindsided the policeman and fled the scene, only to be chased down on foot and TACKLED by the same officer.”
What!?…Was BJ too drunk to sprawl? I think this is giving false hope to Sherk who now thinks his takedowns will work on him. The report is questionable. Police officer was probably too embarrassed to tell the truth.
The new report alleges that Penn blindsided the policeman and fled the scene, only to be chased down on foot [due to a lack of cardio]. He then PULLED GUARD on the same officer.
That’s probably more like it.
“No confirmation on whether Penn pulled guard or was captured due to a lack of cardio.”
LMAO!!!
that picture is funny!!

Sweeet, thanks for letting us know.
BJ Penn is a fucking criminal…all this smack about he won’t fight sherk because he tested positive for steriods and he fights police officers…little bitch
Jesus what a f-ing hypocrite he will not fight Sean Sherk who actually had his suspension reduced (why?) because the CSAC obviously lacks credibility and the labs which reviewed his samples fouled up. LOOK IT UP !
Hey kids Sean Sherk works out very hard and takes supplements to replenish his body. His levels of nandrolone were less than 5 nanograms above normal. DONT BE LIKE THAT GUY … Be a real man like me and punch cops after a night out on the town. Drinking until I am so drunk is awesome and then to top it off you can roam the streets of Hawaii and bounce of police officers who don’t have the fighting ability that I do.
Woooo Hoooo BJ Penn is a rockstar and certainly has more ethics than Sherk.
BJ will fight Sherk. Because Sherk was stripped. He wouldn’t fight a undisputed title fight. Sherk was caught..paid his dues..and gets a clean slate. That IMO is what BJ meant to say.
We all don’t really know what went down..I just hope he didn’t sucker punch a cop..he doesn’t have to..but if he did..he was either out of his mind..drunk, high, on something..cuz that is a knuckle head move.
that wasnt my message….BJ trying to look like mister hero by not takeing a fight with sherk because he took steriods
maenwhile , he’s beating up cops for extra fun…..and sherk was..if you dont all ready know stripped of his title….get a life

I dont understand why so many of you hate on BJ. He may veyr well be the most talented fighter in the world…. He will prove to be the Mike Jordan of the Lightweight division. you BJ haters sound like the idiots who used to hate on Jordan. BJ is scary good. At 28 years old he still has a lot to accomplish. Haters can hate all you want but BJ will be around for a long time and he will accomplish so much now that he has rededicated himself to mma.
Can anyone explain to me why we do not see more gogoplata attempts in mma? Its not a complicated move but we dont see a lot of it used in mma. I dont think I can ever recall it being used in the UFC. I have seen Shinya Akoi finish Joakim (PRIDE) with it and Nick diaz submitted Gomi (PRIDE) with the gogoplata, but other than that I cant recall it ever being used. I ask this question because I find it effective when grappling. Triangle chokes and arm bars are used from the guard but only when the opponent is sitting up. Many times the fighter on top will posture down keeping his chest close to his opponents chest which nullifies arm bars and triangles. When that happens I find the gogoplata to be very effective, I manage to sneak my foot over the shoulder, placing my foot across my opponents neck. In my personal experience I find this move to be very effective but I do not understand why it is hardly used in mma. Anyone have any insight as too why it is such a simple but rarely used technique?
Imagine a grappling match between Shinya akoi vs. Bj Penn….That is a dream grappling match in my eyes!

Check out this interview with Fedor:
Emelianenko: “Let Randy Couture fight me. The only obstacle is Dana.”
New short Fedor interview by MMAWeekly
MMAWeekly’s Korea Correspondent, John Evans, recently caught up with Fedor Emelianenko, the man almost universally regarded as the No. 1 mixed martial arts heavyweight in the world.
MMAWeekly: You will be fighting on New Year’s Eve in Tokyo, but your opponent has yet to be named. Can you confirm the rumors that you will be fighting Hong Man Choi?
Emelianenko: I cannot confirm this fight at the moment. I am ready to meet any opponent in the ring.
MMAWeekly: Jeff Monson and Josh Barnett are obviously perspective opponents as well. Do you have plans to fight either of them in a future M-1 Global promotion?
Emelianenko: I think that fights with these fighters are possible in the future. M-1 opens greater opportuinties for sportsmen.
MMAWeekly: Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White has been quoted as saying, “I don’t think Fedor is a top-five heavyweight in the world, and I’m not saying that because I didn’t get Fedor. I’ve always felt that way about Fedor and I always felt Randy Couture would beat Fedor … Fedor is a farce.” How do you feel about these comments?
Emelianenko: Dana talks a lot and uses words lightly. Let Randy Couture fight me. Allow this fight that everyone wants to take place. Me, Randy and MMA fans all over the world want it. The only obstacle is Dana.
MMAWeekly: What is your opinion of Randy Couture? He has announced publicly that at this point in his career you are the only fighter that he feels it is worth it for him to face in the ring.
Emelianenko: People want to see this fight and I want to meet him in the ring. I have the greatest respect for Randy and have always admired him. I am also thankful that he has such a high opinion of me.
MMAWeekly: Can you discuss your long-term goals in the M-1 organization? Where do you see the M-1 promotion, and Russian MMA in general, ten years from now?
Emelianenko: I trust in (M-1) and the good people that they have brought together. M-1 gives me the chance to meet champions from various organisations in the ring, instead of being restrained within the limits of one organization.
MMA has great potential in Russia. In every city there are Mix Fight clubs opening. There are fights shown on TV, including fights from Pride Fighting Championships which are shown on NTV, (one of the most popular television stations in Russia). On subscription/pay TV there is a special fight channel. The president of Russia respects our sport and attends the large events.

LOL, nice one Mania. Read the second to last sentence about him leaving the scene to then get tackled by a 45 year old cop got me immediately thinking about BJ’s cardio, especially back in 2004 and while drunk. But you beat me to it. Loved it!

I gotta take sides with PJJ on this one. When I think of the type of person that would blindside hit a police officer with a punch to the face, the first words that comes to my mind are ‘Some punk-ass drunk’. However, another phrase that comes to mind is “One crazy-ass MoFo”. And that one describes BJ to a tee, especially back then.
But to us fans, it appears that BJ has really settled down over the last couple years (the last year in particular) and is truely trying to focus on his UFC career. Think about it, back in 2004 when this happened, BJ was not in the UFC, and MMA still had yet to begin its ascent to the top of mainstream sports. TUF season 1 did not air until 2005, one year AFTER this incident happened.
We all don’t really know what went down..I just hope he didn’t sucker punch a cop..he doesn’t have to..but if he did..he was either out of his mind..drunk, high, on something..cuz that is a knuckle head move.
I agree Phil. If that one sucker punch esacalated into anything more, BJ would be going to jail for sure. A professional MMA fighter in a bar/street fight against someone that is untrained would probably be some sort of assault by a deadly weapon. I now that if a Navy Seal attacks a civilian while on leave, the Seal’s hands are considered lethal weapons. I wonder how it works for a pro mma fighter???

Check out this interview with Kawajjiri
After a year’s absence, Tatsuya “The Crusher” Kawajiri will make his much-awaited return to the ring in the “Yarennoka!” New Year’s Eve event produced by former PRIDE staff members.
Kawajiri called 2007 “a year of tribulation” and rightfully so. He has not fought since PRIDE Shockwave on New Year’s Eve 2006. He was also unable to defend his Shooto welterweight title due to an injury and then came news that Lorenzo Fertitta, owner of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, had purchased PRIDE. But the purchase did not lead to fights, and the PRIDE office officially closed in October.
Setback after setback, Kawajiri’s opportunities seemed to have diminished.
Kawajiri never doubted himself, though. He patiently trained and stayed hungry to elevate his game to a new level.
His demeanor and work ethic will finally pay off on New Year’s Eve when Kawajiri fights Luiz Azeredo (Pictures) in front of the sellout crowd at the Saitama Super Arena.
In an exclusive interview with Sherdog.com, the humble Kawajiri shared his thoughts on his return and the past year.
Sherdog: How was it fighting in front of 48,000 fans?
Kawajiri: It felt really good. I had the chance to exchange blows at full strength in front of such a large crowd.
Sherdog: In your fight against Gilbert Melendez (Pictures), it looked like you wanted to utilize your striking. Was that your game plan for the fight?
Kawajiri: It was planned to an extent. Until then, the only time that I experienced such slugging was when I fought against Takanori Gomi (Pictures). At that time, the PRIDE Lightweight Grand Prix was scheduled for 2007. So thinking ahead, I felt that I needed more experience with hard slugging.
Sherdog: How tough was Melendez?
Kawajiri: He was tenacious.
Sherdog: As the fight wore on, it looked like your punches were single shots instead of combinations.
Kawajiri: I should have been careful and not looked to land one big punch. My punches turned out to be just right hooks and left hooks. There’s room for improvement.
Sherdog: You said in the past that your performance tends to drop when you lose your temper during fights. Was that the case against Melendez?
Kawajiri: Yes. I lost my temper and completely forgot my game plan. The fight became a slugfest, and I was just thinking stuff like “I ain’t hurt! Hit me again!” But my gym mates and my manager have strictly told me not to focus on striking, especially if I want to go to the top.
Sherdog: Did you think that you were able to bring out what you had worked on in preparation for the fight?
Kawajiri: To a certain degree, yes. I also felt that I could fight at a fair level weighing in at 73 kilograms (161 pounds) as well.
Sherdog: What do you think about the judges’ decision?
Kawajiri: If there could have been a draw, that probably would have been the more appropriate decision. But I didn’t feel that I was inferior to Melendez while I was fighting. I accept the decision by the judges, but I still don’t feel that I lost the fight.
Sherdog: How was fighting at 73 kg? Was it difficult to go back and forth from 70 kg (154 pound) to 73 kg?
Kawajiri: In terms of my performance, I fight best at 70 kg. When I think about my height and my physique, 70 kg suits me better. It wasn’t really difficult managing my weight. When I fought at 73 kg, I was able to cut weight easier than bringing my weight down to 70 kg. In order to cut my weight to 70 kg, I had to get rid of my water in my body, but none of that was necessary to set my weight at 73 kg.
Sherdog: You got hurt on New Year’s Eve and had to relinquish your Shooto world title belt. How did you feel?
Kawajiri: I was depressed. It’s an obligation for the champion to fight to defend the belt. I broke the base of my left thumb and I wanted to force myself to fight even with the injury. But as I trained, the pain got worse and my hand would hurt even with a slight touch. I couldn’t spar with it and I started to think that maybe I won’t be able to fight. My doctor told me that if I hurt it again, it would take more than a year to heal. So thinking ahead, I sensed that relinquishing the belt was the decision I had to make.
Sherdog: You fought only at Shooto prior to appearing in PRIDE, and even after you started to fight at PRIDE, you were particular about the Shooto champion being the best in the world. What do you think you lost by relinquishing the belt that you prized?
Kawajiri: Well, after losing to Gomi, I had a notion that it’s impudent for me to say anything about the Shooto champion. I realized that I needed to demand more from myself to become a better fighter in general rather than just pertaining to the Shooto champion. I thought that if I can’t appeal to the public as a fighter, it was objectionable and I would be just a damaged good in the future. Therefore, following the fight against Gomi, I didn’t appear with the Shooto belt when I fought at PRIDE. Not being able to defend my belt clamps down on me. The championship fight against Joachim Hansen (Pictures) was inconclusive. But I have changed my mindset. Even though I have lost the Shooto belt, I can live with that if I can improve and continue to get stronger.
Sherdog: Do you feel responsibility to Shooto?
Kawajiri: Yes. Kazuhiro Sakamoto (Shooto promoter) has treated me well in the past, and he takes good care of me now. He provided me the opportunities to fight at PRIDE Bushido and expected a lot from me. I feel sorry that I let him down.

Cracked myself when i read the cardio part..he’s an MMA fighter not a marathon runner..
Damn…..that was a good one…
Indeed, lack of cardio cracked me up too.
Seriously though does anyone else feel as I do that BJ Penn is somewhat overrated? His few UFC wins are not over major fighters at the top of their career and he can’t seem to string together back to back wins against really good fighters.
I’m sure technically he’s brilliant in JJ, but his performances to me are lackluster.
Yep, last line of the article made me laugh out loud at work. Good stuff.
He beat Hughes when he was in his prime and Gomi. I am hoping that his recent re-dedication to the lightweight division will put an end to his past lack of cardio performances.

Yes, what BJ did was idiotic, it’s not even an argument. But since when was the Sherk discussion about ethics? It’s about performance enhancement. Why the hell should ANYBODY fight someone who artificially enhances their performance? That’s your health on the line. ANY unfair advantage in a combat sport should be dealt with seriously. Would Sherk fight someone who has oiled their shorts? Or put lead in their gloves? I think not, so who’d be the real hypocrite?
Sherk is naturally a hard worker, I give him a lot of props for that. But taking some amount of supplements that gives the same effects as steroids (ie. an increase in peak performance, a decrease in recovery time) has no place in sports.

Oh and Kells, nice for you to show up to talk about BJ’s legal troubles. But when people were having legit back-and-forth arguments about steroid use, you were conspicuously absent. Thanks buddy, we all appreciate it.
Sounds to me like its just another example of BJ gassing out in a fight.
Too bad there wasn’t some water nearby BJ could have swam to safety in his beloved ocean.

and also come on, im pretty sure this article wasnt even about sherk so why is this even still a topic? unless the pig bj hit was sherk then theres no point in still talking about this.
plus you cant hardly compare bj’s issues with sherk’s becasue last i checked hitting a cop isnt a performance enhancer.
i mean seriously this article woulda been great and fun for people to comment on, now its back to people crying about sherk. lame

Ridiculous comments and picture.
Even if BJ was involved(he wasnt at the center of it)if you touch a cop these days it constitutes a charge. The cops blew things way out of context that night. Now BJ can get past this. My guess is that he will keep out of trouble and this charge will be off his record in a year.

XYIENCE TESTOSTERONE ANYONE LOL … REMEMBER WHEN THIS WAS THE PRODUCT OF THE UFC AND EVERYONE FROM FOREST GRIFFEN TO THE CAST OF TUF2 TOOK THE STUFF ? IT WAS AROUND THE TIME OF TUF2 WHEN XYIENCE SUPPLEMENTS BLEW UP.
I GUESS TESTOSTERONE IS OK AS LONG AS IT IS FROM XYIENCE RIGHT LOL. THE UFC SEEMS OK WITH XYEINCE.
Or is Xyience that much different ? Are they packaging fake testosterone or does the UFC turn a blind eye to that. All in all supplements are great for us all. I say anything over the counter is fair game.
BJ Penn fans still don’t get it- BJ thinks he’s bigger and better than… everything else in the universe. He sucker punches a cop, but he’s the HONORABLE UFC fighter, right? I’m sure Penn takes no responsibility for what happened, he’s just that kind of person. This story is yet another example demonstrating that BJ Penn is the most arrogant fighter in the UFC. Easily more arrogant than Matt Hughes. Easily.
BJ has also gotta be the most immature fighter in the UFC. If you want proof, look up… anything that BJ has ever said. Arrogance, Immaturity, and a slight Hawaiian accent: That is the essence of BJ Penn.
Or is Xyience that much different ? Are they packaging fake testosterone or does the UFC turn a blind eye to that. All in all supplements are great for us all. I say anything over the counter is fair game.
Supplements are fine as long as you’re not over the limit. Sherk uses a “cocktail” of supplements, and if that puts him over the limit, he has to pay the consequences.
BJ punched a cop from the blindslide and didn’t KO him?
Not only didn’t he knock him out….the guy chased his ass down?
Ouch….BJ, I thought you were a THUG. J/K

who ever doesn’t like Penn better respect him.

He punched the Sheriff, but he do not punch the Deputy.
I thought I saw this scuffle on Punk’d…..Ashton got him good. Let him free and continue his life goal to win every title in every weight class.

I will say that BJ PENN was absolutely wrong for what he did that night. I’m pretty sure he matured a lot since than. I hope “MANIA”S” last line in the blog was a joke. I tired of people ragging on BJ PENN because of his lack of cardio. He gassed in one fight and that’s all people remember. Its really a shame. But if it was worthy to him he would have posted it. Whatever.

wow,it only took two cops to take B.J. down.I would have figured at least a half dozen…ahem,B.J. after you finish off this chump wanna move back up to 175 I think you have some unfinished business.
I guess people from the mainland don’t like seeing people from Hawaii excel in this sport. I even sent “MANIA” a video of BJ PENN’S new dieting system. But if it was worthy to him he would have posted it. Whatever.
Chill dude. BJ gets a lot of love here. It’s just a little harmless joking.
The original report alleges that Penn blindsided the policeman and fled the scene, only to be chased down on foot and tackled by the same officer.
Looks like BJ gassed again!
