The pool scene was a little gay, but I will always like Hughes. And I think he has Farm boy training with him.

Good lord, if this is an example of the type of training he is doing he is going to get murdered by GSP. I train harder than that for just Jiu Jitsu. I’ve seen training footage of GSP and his workouts are intense. Was that Tommy Speer from TUF that I saw training with Hughes?

Kind of agree, the training made me think Hughes is getting old or something, gsp seems to train like an animal and seems very explosive. I hope this isn’t the most intensive training he does because if it is it’ll be a short night for him.

hughes is naturally gifted…im sure he trains a lot harder than that a couple weeks from fight time…but they say he only trained 2 weeks prior to his fight with Sherk…now that he’s older and fighting gsp im sure his workout are more intense, becuase that seems like they just went to some other gym/fitness center, like it was their “day off”

I don’t think Hughes trains with anybody who is better than him in anything. He has an “alpha male” type personality where he wants to dominate everybody he trains with. GSP, on the other hand, regularly trains with boxers, strikers, BJJ guys, and wrestlers who are at least as good as him in those disciplines.

Does it really matter, no matter what matt hughes shows up Dec. 29, it wont make a difference if GSP is healthy. GSP is too well rounded and proficient in all aspects of mma to loose to Hughes. r u serious? The best fighter he has ever trained with was Rich Franklin (occasionally), Tim Sylvia (JOKE!), Jens Pulver (he couldnt even teach hughes how to punch).

GSP has no ego when it comes to training. He is like Forrest Griffin, a wandering Ronin with no master, kind of like andy wang lol. GSP jumps around from school to school, he trains with everybody and thats y he is so god damn good!

I can’t believe that Matt would have someone make such a video of him going to gym and have his website blasted on the whole thing. Now he must have made this hoping that GSP would watch it to think that he is not training hard and just wrestling with the boys in the pool.

It was very painful to watch.

Cant get over some of the criticism of hughes the guy is a legend end of. Hughes is a machine and looks in great shape, he regularly is on the tuf fighters for not pushing themselves hard enough, so to think that he wont be ready for gsp is ridiculous!! Is he really gony show his intense training sessions on camera? come on!! Look at floyd mayweather, he poses in to the camera while doing the speed bag! is that his work out? i hardly think so!! Gsp fans will in be in for a shock if they think this will be an easy night!

You don’t have to make movies to be a movie critic…

Matt is an outstanding, well-conditioned athlete. He’s very strong and his wrestling and power submission game is solid. But he hasn’t expanded his game to catch up with GSP. GSP is the Genesis of the new MMA athlete. In the future, champions will be those who have cross-trained since they started, who don’t call one discipline their strength. These have been the phases of evolution in a UFC athlete:

Phase I: Expert of a discipline (ie. Royce Gracie)
Phase II: Expert of one discipline, trains in other disciplines (ie. Matt Hughes)
Phase III: Well-versed in multiple disciplines (ie. GSP)
Phase IV: Expert of multiple disciplines (???)

It’s not that simple. As an example, you cannot compare one athletes ground game to another when both train that particular discipline at different levels. One of your so called “well versed” fighters might train ground and pound and take downs 10 hours per week. The other fighter might train it 20 hours per week. “Well Versed” is not automaticaly a superior benefit verses a style that leans more towards one particular discipline. For example, and this is theoretical; Compared to GSP, Matt Hughes “MIGHT” have 15% more natural strength comparitavely. Depending on where the fight goes, this simple fact could very well negate GSP’s superior skills in all disciplines, as you have claimed him to have. Now, unless you train on a regular basis, I find it hard to accept your take on this issue. Movie critics comment on the outcome, not on the process itself Sir. Take note, they are hardly experts in that field.

You don’t know how many reps he did before the camera focused on him or what he did before that. Have you ever heard of super sets? You might see a fighter struggling with a 45 lb bar, you have no clue what they did before that unless you were there in person.

Thanks for the reply, I respect your opinion. I don’t claim that GSP is better than Matt in every discipline. The strengths of Matt’s game as I had pointed out are his edges over GSP. However, GSP is so well-rounded that with most fighters he faces, he usually has one significant edge over an opponent, while giving up only slight disadvantages in other disciplines. With Matt, GSP’s big edge comes in striking. There could be better WW strikers than GSP somewhere in the world, but I’d bet that GSP’s BJJ or wrestling will be a level above their’s. I can think of only John Fitch that can compare to GSP’s versatility.

Hughes destroys GSP

Comment by True Believer
2007-12-05 08:18:14

I don’t know if Hughes destroys GSP, but he will beat him. In the last fight Hughes fought GSP on less than 8 weeks rest after a tough win over BJ Penn. In addition, he went into the fight thinking he was going to stand and strike with GSP, which was a bad strategy.
In this fight, Hughes will be very well rested, and he will go in looking to fight like he did in wins over GSP, Charuto, Trigg and Newton, which means that he will be looking to shoot and take the fight to the ground.
That being said, GSP was very impressive in his decision over Kos, and GSP is a great overall fighter. However, KOs looked scared in that fight, and GSP was focussed and ready. In this fight, GSP will be ready, but he will be going against a fighter who can capitalize on any mistakes. I think this fight may go the distance, but I can also see Hughes winning by rear naked choke. One thing is for sure, it will not end like the last fight with Hughes standing and smiling while GSP picks him apart.

He is the only fighter who I think can move up in weight and challenge Anderson and give him a good fight, but that doesnt mean he is going to do the same thing to Matt Hughes this time. THIS GUY IS GOING TO COME WITH EVERYTHING HE HAS to destroy GSP. People forgot easily what happened to GSP when he fought Serra. Dont tell me now that someone else other than Serra thought he was going to win.Wait until you see the fight and remember this time he will not let GSP TO PLAY AROUND WITH HIM.I am sure he has watched the fight so many times and has seen that overwhelming victory as a disrespect.
