karo parisyan
Welterweight contender Karo Parisyan has apparently earned a title shot in six or seven months if he wants to wait, according to a recent interview on PunchDrunkGamer.com.

“People are talking about that [a fight with Jon Fitch], I don’t know. The deal is I think I already have a title shot if I want to wait. If I wait I can get my title shot I guess in six or seven months from now, which is a long time away, and I don’t want to mess up my plans of getting my title shot. Now I would love to fight Jon Fitch, but if I fight him and god forbid something goes wrong and I lose that fight it puts me all the way back down again and I have to work back up for a title fight. So if I am guaranteed a title fight now, I’ll take the title fight or if I don’t want to wait such a long time I’ll take another opponent who I have a more ‘guaranteed’ win over. I still think I can beat Jon Fitch – Jon’s a very tough guy, but I think that if I am in shape that I can beat him eight out of 10 times. But at this point I don’t want to jeopardize anything leading up to my title fight, so we’ll see what the UFC will offer and what I will take.”

Ridiculous for these reasons:

 1. UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra still has to fight the winner of the bout between Matt Hughes and Georges St. Pierre at UFC 79 to declare an “undisputed” champion. At the earliest that will happen is more than likely sometime in April 2008.
 2. More “guaranteed” win? That’s garbage. “The Heat” wants a can or no one until mid-2008. Talk about a gamer.
 3. Fitch deserves the opportunity — he has seven consecutive UFC wins and has not lost since 2002. (Yes, I like Fitch. But, it’s my site and a blog … entitled to that opinion.)

When we heard word that the UFC approached Fitch with a fight against Akihiro Gono at UFC 82 instead of Parisyan we speculated that he may have earned the “guaranteed” title fight. It was the only thing that made sense because a showdown between Parisyan and Fitch would set up a number one contender bout.

It just seemed illogical because would Parisyan really want to wait that long? Apparently the answer to that question is a big fat, “Yes.” Either that or he’ll fight Ross Pointon. Yay.

There’s some history here that comes into play that must be mentioned — Parisyan was booked to challenge then 170-pound champion Matt Hughes at UFC 56 in 2005 for the welterweight crown. He got hurt prior to the fight and had to withdraw. He was replaced at the last minute by Joe Riggs (who didn’t make weight and was submitted in round one).

Parisyan missed his chance … and he slid even farther back in line when he dropped a unanimous decision to Diego Sanchez at UFC Fight Night 6 in 2006. He has since rattled off three consecutive wins and has a solid overall record inside the Octagon (8-2) in a very talent-rich division.

Put simply, he has the title shot within his grasp and he does not want to miss out on the opportunity … again.

Personally, I can’t empathize with Karo. He’s a world class fighter, sacrificing every day to one day become a champion. I’m just a fan. A fan who wants to see the best fighters fight the best fighters.

Just one more thing: Isn’t losing to a can more of a career “risk” than losing to someone like Fitch? Doesn’t make much sense … unless you’re Karo.

i would like to see him fight in the mean time but i dont blame him for not wanting to take a fight. he is right if he loses the fight he loses his title shot. We all know that if he does lose this next fight he will probably have to win 3 or 4 fights before he would get another chance a title shot.

Karo makes some good points. If Serra is not able to return to fighting for lets say more than 6 months from now, then the GSP/Hughes III winner will need to fight in late Spring. In that scenario, Fitch or Karo would get the chance and my guess is that Karo would be selected over Fitch anyway. Also, since Fitch has been asked to fight Gono, it appears that the UFC is leaning toward Karo.

Since Karo has a broken hand, the extra healing time would be expected before he takes on a fight with any non-can like Fitch. So waitng the 6 - 7 months is realistic. If Serra does return to action in lets say March. He would fight the Interim champ and the unified winner would defend 3 - 4 months after that. Again, its right at the end of Karo’s expected time frame.

This statement makes him look like ass cheeks. Maybe he should fight Blake Bowman..or Joe Scarola to help boost is ego. Fighters..fighter..it’s not about the belt..it’s a about Pride.

What an egomaniac, beat fitch 8 out of 10 times?? I bet it would be fitch who would beat him 8 out of 10 times, fitch is close to gsp just not as athletic. I say let him get threw fitch, if he does THEN he deserves a title shot, title shots should be reserved for the number one contender. If he defeats another “can” how does that make him worthy of a title shot???? This guy is baked.

I think I’m in like company. I think Karo the fighter is a stud, love to watch that dude fight. Karo the person is a complete dick. I can’t stand that dude and all his bs. I can see where he’s coming from though, he already lost a title shot, why risk it again. Looking at him and Fitch, I would give them both a 50/50. Dia mette is right, Fitch bailed on a fight cause he would have to cut weight. Screw that, you get a chance to fight Matt Hughes in a main event, how do you turn it down? That’s a opportunity of a life time for a guy who’s been fighting nothing but plugs (Diego is a good fighter, I think a mid-level guy at 170, I think he would be better suited putting on more muscle or dropping to 155). This welterweight crap is never ending. :P Just gimmie GSP vs Hughes III, GSP wins and doesn’t lose for a long long time.

Personally, I don’t think he has earned the title shot. He’s beaten Drew Fickett, Burkman and Chonan since losing to Diego. Those three guys are good fighters, but not top tier welterweights. On top of that, he hasn’t finished any of those guys. Fitch doesn’t derserve a title shot either, until he beats a top five guy. Fitch has beaten as good or better fighters then Karo has. They both fought Sanchez and Burkman. Fitch beat Sanchez and finished Burkman. Not to mention, Fitch beat a game Thiago Alves.

I agree with Mania 100% here. He needs to fight Fitch. It’s the only fight that makes sense. GSP, Hughes and Serra have to get those two fights out of the way before anyone can get a shot at the belt. Fitch and Karo are #4 and #5 in the welterweight division. Sanchez and Kos are after them.

heres the thing, if your the guy who gets the title shot it should be undisputed #1…so that means he would have to beat fitch…the thing he has to realize that if he truly wants to be champion he will have to fight the #1 contender everytime he fights, might as well start fighting the #1 contenders right now, to see if he even deserves it..no since of sitting back for seven months to either, get your ass handed to you by the champ, or beat the champ then dodge anyone that you think might take your belt 2 out of 10 times

Lets not forget that the UFC postponed the Serra/Hughes fight for an additional 3 or 4 months when they selected them as coaches of TUF6.

Hughes last fought in March, and Serra won the belt in April. If you take away TUF, that fight should have occurred in August, and most of us on here were very upset when it was pushed back to December. How do you think the other WW contenders felt?

The point is, every time the UFC pushes back a title fight, that adds significant risk to all of the top 5 or 6 contenders in that particular weight class, who are then forced to wait for their title shots and/or fight another contender.

And when you’re dealing with a stacked division like the WWs–where you have 6 contenders who would be guaranteed a title shot if they were fighting in a slim division, like the MWs–that risk is magnified even more.

I hate to say it, but Karo has a point, despite sounding like a cocky schmuck when he’s making it. None of the top WWs (GSP, Hughes, Fitch, Kos, Karo, etc.) necessarily DESERVE to be forced to wait for a title shot that they feel they already earned. just look at what happened to Diego when he was forced to wait…he lost back-to-back.

If he has been told that a title shot is next, why would he fight Fitch? I’m like any other fan, I want to see good fights and Karo-Fitch is a good fight.

However, Karo has to do what’s in the best interest for himself. If that means waiting for a title shot, so be it. Should he win the belt, he’ll face Fitch soon enough.

Personally, I think Fitch has been better than Karo over the last year or two and is slightly more deserving of a title shot. But you can’t knock Karo for playing it smart if given the opportunity.

I think Karo gets the award for being the biggest tool in the UFC, though Dana might be a close second. It seems to fit just perfectly that he won’t take a chance on jeopardizing a title shot, yet he does have the nerve to say he’d beat Fitch 8 out of 10 times. I guess he did add the caveat of “being in shape”, so he could always fall back on his little pot belly for an excuse if he needs it.

The only way to make some sense of this mess, is for both to fight each other. The looser would be a very quality win for the winner, and make him deserving of the shot.

Fitch vs. Karo, In my oppinion Fitch would win. The title fight I am waiting for is GSP vs. Fitch…thats a real quality title fight between in my oppinion the best 2 fighters in the division.

Dang Mania, did Karo strike a chord with you or what?

I do believe Karo would win a fight against Fitch 8 out of 10 times, because as Karo said it the best at UFC 71 “I have the best judo throw in the world. High Five!”

Karo deserves a title shot, he should not have to fight Jon Fitch for that contendership.

Look at GSP, he fought and defeated Koscheck, then he gets an automatic title shot. That is complete garbage. When GSP defeated Koscheck we should of seen a Fitch vs. GSP for the number 1 contendership with Karo being in line to fight the winner of Hughes/Serra.

Karo has been the most overlooked welterweight for years. He has one shot, and he got injured. Shows you how much the UFC really likes Karo.

Fitch vs. Karo would be nice, but I think Fitch would just try to out-wrestle his way to victory while Karo would go 110% with his judo throws and his cardio.

Karo should be the number 1 contender, no questions asked.

Jon Fitch is good, and his fight and victory of Deigo showed me a lot. But, Karo has been waiting in the wings for this shot for a long time and he deserves it.

I don’t disagree with you. For Karo, personally, it would make sense to wait for a title shot. In his business that is the ultimate goal, and the wait is worth all the money and fame that comes with it.

I just don’t think he’s earned the title shot. Everytime he gets close something happens. Injury against Hughes. The loss to Diego. In my eyes, he only earns a shot with a victory of Fitch. If I’m the UFC that is the only way he gets in line after GSP, Hughes and Serra.

Karo will alwys be a B level fighter. He is never going to be considered a top three fighter unless Hughes retires and GSP moves up to 185 lbs.

1. Jon Fitch
2. Diego Sanchez
3. Josh Koscheck

Karo’s got nothing to prove, he earned a title shot a couple years ago, got hurt and then rattled off a bunch of wins after that! he’s done more that enough to challenge for the title. he needs to think about his career and his fam. not taking the fight with a fitch if he doesn’t have to doesn’t make him a wimp, it makes him smart.

Dear Karo,

You now have the opportunity to fight a top contender like Jon Fitch and PROVE that your time for a title shot has come. Why not test yourself against Fitch now? Considering that he would be next in line to fight you if you won the belt… Plus fighting him earlier in your career gives you the chance to bounce back if you suffer a loss. You are a young guy and have plenty of time to improve and win fights.

GSP holds a convincing win over you already, therefore you need all the practice you can get… If you can’t beat Fitch, you aint beating GSP or Hughes…

Trust me, Fitch is not ducking Hughes - I hope he gets a shot at Hughes who has no chance at simply overpowering Fitch the way he does other WWs. Karo is 100% the opposite of Fitch. Fitch says he wants to fight the best out there and doesn’t care if that includes a title fight. Karo wants to fight all the B fighters just to get a chance at a belt. I envision Karo wearing the belt around all the time like Tim Sylvia did - What a joke! Fitch would manhandle Karo and anyone who thinks Karo’s going to Judo throw Fitch is crazy! Go check out Fitch vs Burkman and Karo vs Burkman for glimpse of how they match up. I realize common opponents only go so far, but it’s a place to start. If Dana lets Karo sit and wait it out, it will be a huge injustice!

NEVER underestimate the stupifying effects of the hype machine. Karo is obviously under its spell and has shown that he hasn’t watched any of his last wins. I don’t blame him though who wants to watch 3 boring snoozefests again? With every half-hearted decision win, Karo is sinking deeper and deeper down the top 10 welterweights until one day we’ll all say “Remember Karo Parisyan? Yeah he once was a contender but lost his drive somewhere along the way but he did make a good gate keeper for all the new UFC talent though.”
I was disgusted half way through the quote and was completely appalled by the end. Mania made some great points and I couldn’t agree any more with them. Next time maybe the author will put his name down so we can thank him personally(well as personal as you can get on a blog).

Who has karo beat to deserve a title shot??????? Anyone here who thinks he deserves a title shot tell me who he beat to deserve a title shot. EVERY TIME he fights one of the big boys he loses ex gsp, sherk, sanchez he knows he would lose to fitch, and is scared of him, I also think kos would beat him. “Please mr.dana white give me a can so I can get the title shot I was promised back in 2005″. Karo lost his title shot as far as I’m concerned after he lost to diego, the win made diego more entitled for a title shot. Kos beat diego so then that made him more entitled than diego for a title shot and then gsp beat kos so he’s the most entitled.

Who cares if he lost outside of the UFC and almost submitted Hughes. He flat out doesn’t want to face Fitch. Fitch is 7-0 in the UFC and his last win was against Diego, who Karo lost to. If anyone should be able to wait out a title shot it should be Fitch. That said, he would NEVER do that even if it was an option.

Considering that Karo basically got screwed out of a title shot a few years ago when he got hurt right before UFC 56 then didn’t get another title shot when he got healthy I can’t get too upset at him for not wanting to lose the title shot again.

A champ will willingly fight anyone to become champ. In other words ” I want the belt sooo badly because I feel I have earned it, however Fitch is pretty good, so I’ll just wait for the title shot, and IF I become Champ, I still don’t know if I can beat Fitch, but I will certainly say I can.

Sorry Karo, those are words of a non-Champ. Being the Champ means that you can beat anyone in your division. NOT knowing that there is still someone out there (maybe) better.
Anderson Silva is a True Champ cuz he IS the undisputed in his division. No one can beat him. Karo’s logic is senseless and he should examine his career full-circle and not 3/4 of it.

Your right, good catch. I agree with you - Karo is a top notch fighter, it’s just weird to hear a legit fighter say things like that. He’s not helping his cause. Karo/Fitch is the only fight that makes sense for either of them.

I don’t blame Karo at all for his thinking, he’s right. If he does indeed have a title shot coming up in 6 months then he should wait and go for the title shot, plain and simple. Anyone else who says no is lying.

Karo’s thinking maybe just, but you have to keep that type of remark to yourself. It’s comments like he just made that give a subtle hint into the mans psyche: He basically admitted he is in fact afraid to simply lose and that will in fact cause him to be afraid to due the things he usually does well. That’s possibly the reason his last fight was, well, boring.

He’s not the #1 contender, he’s #4 behind Fitch and he will in fact have to fight Fitch in order to move up the pecking order. Good luck Karo, you’re going to need it.

Umm, Fitch just declined fighting Hughes. It’s not a coincidence that the two guys that are the elite in the division (Hughes and GSP) are also the biggest gamers.

HUH??

Koscheck is way better competition than Chonan, Burkman, and Fickett. Sure Karo had a title shot way back when, but the division was weaker then, and guys like Fitch and Kos are in the mix now. IMO For anybody to get a title shot nowadays, they need a win over one of GSP, Hughes, Fitch, or Kos.

I’m pretty damn sure Fich would beat Karo 8-10 times… but’ I do think Karo deserves a title shot, he’s always overlooked because at critical times with a few top contenders he’s lost. Karo was a better fighter than Diego S. when they fought .. but his cardio pooped. I’m not sure he can, match some fighters cardio for a 5 round fight even if he trains right… I do think he can go 3 rounds with the right training though.
