ufc 81 brock lesnar vs frank mir

Just noticed that the SuperBowl weekend pay-per-view (PPV) event on February 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena has a fancy new nickname.

UFC 81: “Breaking Point” (right now) features the heavyweight clash between former division champion, Frank Mir, and recent free agent acquisition, Brock Lesnar.

Here is the rest of the rumored participants to date:

 • Tyson Griffin (10-1) vs. Gleison Tibau (15-4)
 • Nate Marquardt (25-7-2) vs. Thales Leites (12-1)
 • Alan Belcher (11-3) vs. Ricardo Almeida (8-2)

To check out the entire rumored fight card click here.

There’s still no word on whether or not reigning (and resigned) UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture will defend his title on this card against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. “The Natural” has been offered the bout, according to recent comments from UFC President Dana White, but has not made a decision on whether or not he will return.

To update an earlier report, White and Couture are scheduled to meet this week (if they haven’t already) after there was some miscommunication on a meeting that was supposed to happen the Tuesday (November 20) after UFC 78: “Validation.” We’ll provide an update on that situation when it becomes available.

If Couture passes on the fight, it is widely believed that Nogueira will instead face former champion Tim Sylvia for the vacant strap in the main event of the evening.

Stay tuned.

I think Mir will submit Lesnar. This is Nog vs Sapp all over again. My only concern is Mir, who was way overrated in his prime (destroyed by Freeman, would have lost to Sims the first fight if not for the foul, and barely beat Sims in the rematch) gassing out.

Either way, this is not the card I was expecting. Griffin needs to be put up against someone higher up on the ladder considering he is a top contender.

There are only 4 fights so far. There is no main event yet, and I expect Tyson Griffin’s next fight to be one of the prelimary bouts. However, I do see Belcher and Alameida being televised since Alamedia is making his return, and Belcher looked impressive his last time out against Starnes. Marquardt/Leites should be a good fight and sort out part of the top of the MW division.

Usually the UFC wants to have the Super Bowl weekend event be a big deal, with multiple big names. Lets see what they can do over the next couple of weeks to make this a “Super Card”

How would Mir have lost Sims in the first fight? Have you seen it? Mir was mounted on him doing some GnP within the first few minutes. It’s when he went for an armbar when he lost position and Sims stood up and started stomping him. Looks like he was winning that fight to me.

Any ways i’m sure UFC will add to this card, even if they don’t I’ll still buy it. I want to see Mir submit Lesnar. Yeah thats right, Lesnar may be strong but Mir ain’t no weakling, he snapped Sylvia’s arm remember.

Though it is rare, I disagree with you Mike. I think it is a solid card with the potential for a lot of great fights. It may nothave the superstar names like Shogun, Griffin, Rampage or (sigh) Couture yet, but each fight has contenders. Nate was in a championship fight 6 months ago, Tyson always gets into a brawl worthy of fight of the night and Belcher vs. Almedia is a great matchup (I see Almedia winning on the ground, ring rust be damned!).
I would rather see a bunch of great fights than great fighters beating on cans. Of coarse I would love to see see some high profile names on the card, but as you mentioned, that may yet be to come. But even if they don’t, it is still going to be an entertaining card. (unlike NJ, which was worthy of one big toilet flush)

If the main event is Tim Slyvia vs. Big Nog, then this might be a UFC 65 Bad Intentions type of card, with a couple of good fights, but the rest are not that interesting.

I think Tyson Griffin vs. Gleison Tibau will be the fight of the year in 2008.

Both of these fighters are explosive, and plus when have we seen Tyson Griffin in a boring fight?

Thales Leites is becoming my 2nd favorite Middleweight. His submission skills are fantastic, and I would to see him tap Nate Marquardt, who I strongly dislike.

Mir vs. Lesnar.. Its either going to be a snooze fest, or its going to be a 1 round war.

Who knows? This card has potential to be great, but yet it could suck.

VM: I am with you. This card doesnt look all that bad to me, so far.

Belcher vs. Almeida
Belcher is a young talented striker, who gets better and more comfortable everytime he gets in the octagon. I am very curious to see the Big Dog almeida make his return to the octagon. Almeida was always in my oppinion, one of the most exciting GRAPPLERS in the sport, his striking is not to bad either. This fight too me is good for the 1st televised fight of the night.

Nate Marquardt vs. Leites: This is gonna be one hell of a fight. Nate Marquadt has got skillz, and this time he will be able to put them on display because he wont be outclassed by his opponent like he was against Silva. Thales is a tough up and coming fighter, who is one of my personal favorite young stars on the rise. These fighters are pretty skilled and even in every aspect of the fight. So it should be very entertaining.

Tyson Griffin vs. Tibau:
Tyson Griffin! Enough said. That dude never has a boring fight. Tibau is a tough n skilled fighter. I expect this to go how the last few Tyson Griffin fights have went….Very exciting to a judges decision

Brock Lesnar vs. Mir:
No one can really predict how this fight will end up. I am usually against freakshow fights that involve actors, football players, pro wrestlers, but Brock sounds for real. He said he has been training for 2 years. Wrestlers are said to make the easiest transition into MMA. Pro wrestlers are clows in my oppinion, but I cant help but be excited about seeing him in the cage… This guy looks freakin scary. He is a beast with the strength to probably throw Tim Sylvia’s big ass across the octagon. He looks like he can really hurt someone. On the other hand, Mir is a mystery as well. We all know about how he fought in the past, but that fighter died the day his bike crashed. He hasnt been the same at all, and I am starting to think he never will. Its unfortunate because he was a hell of a fighter. Still you dont just loose your ju jitsu skills overnight, and he is a former champion, so…. I dunno what the hell will happen in this one.

Get me Randy vs. Noguerra in this sounds like a hell of an event to me. The key to this event will be the Brock Lesnar fight. I know all the other fights will be exciting, but if Brock just comes out and starts Mualing Frank Mir, this crad will be awesome.

and this is coming from a pro wrestling Hater, and an MMA faithful!

Dude I think u r the only one who wants to see Tito. We all no what tito will show up, the unenthusiastic, one trick pony, that no one is scared of anymore, and that doesnt have any heart.
Are we talking about the same Tito, cuz the only Tito I know was the one who had the honor of being a world champion and disgraced it by ducking chuck Liddell for over a year. The Tito I know got a spanking (literally) from Couture when he was claiming “THATS really my belt”…Biggest joke of a fighter in CURRENT DAY mixed martial arts.

You may have noticed I didn’t comment on the Mir/Lesner fight. This is because until Brock shows why he should be considered as a letgitamate challenger to real competition, I think it is disrespectful to even doubt a previous champion of Mir’s caliber. I am not saying the Lesner does not have promise, potential or any other superlative you want to insert, I am say that he needs to show it translated into octogon wins before I start hugging his testicles.

Here’s some honesty for you. Tito was lucky to get the draw with Rashad. Rashad had him up in the air for slams about 5 times, and he kept grabbing the fence to escape. If he doesn’t cheat he loses a decision if the fight even goes that long. Tito was lucky to get the decision against Forrest, who clearly won the last two rounds of their fight with two judges apparently giving excessive consideration to a late and useless takedown by Tito in the third round. He has served as a high-priced punching bag for Chuck Liddell on two separate occasions and beaten up a geriatric Ken Shamrock three times. Good for him. All these other fights you speak were long before MMA or UFC were household names. Tito is a washed up one-dimensional one trick pony who has to rely on contrived controversy to draw attention to his fights, rather than skill and compelling match-ups.

silva just needs to start fighting again, it pisses me off that he doesnt even try to put on a good fight. they should either put him in midcard fights testing new comers, or with someone that he cant lay on and will have to fight or get the hell beat out of him. i figure if they keep him outta title contention till he gets his act together and cost him alot of money, maybe then he will start doing more than hugging people.

i think the mir lesnar fight is very intreeging because frank mir has never delt with someone as strong as lesnar i mean the guy can pick up a 500 plus pound man(the big show for you non wrestling guys ) and put him on his shoulders and throw him. not far!! but still i really think lesnar is going in like a bull and just bum rush mir and use his strenght against mir but if he gets to sloppy on the ground then mir will win no problem so it really could go either way also the fight between Nate Marquardt (25-7-2) vs. Thales Leites (12-1) seems like a good fight lets just see if nate can regroup after be destroyed by the spyder
Tito is a washed up one-dimensional one trick pony who has to rely on contrived controversy to draw attention to his fights, rather than skill and compelling match-ups
ROFL! PML! (pissing myself laughing) PW that is the best serving I have seen in a while. Nice. WAR PW!!!
if rampage is healthy i think he can do a nice job selling this card….perhaps some guy named forrest griffin could go on this card i think the fans like him a little maybe even then we can go as far as having GF standing across from QR in the cage who knows maybe that can save this fight card.
Does anyone have any real info reguarding Rampage’s injured hand? When he will be healthy? how bad it is? I tried getting a glimpse of his hands while he was cornering Bisping, and they looked fine to me, although its hard to tell watching it through a TV set. Maybe I should get High Def!

I am curious to see if Brock can pass a post fight drug test…If he cant, I will be really pissed off, that he came into the sport and disgraced it. I am skeptical of clowns, I mean pro wrestlers being in the UFC, however Brock sounds serious and I will give him the benefit of the doubt…He is a scary looking Heavyweight.

I wouldnt mind seeing Brock vs. Bob sapp in a freakshow match

He’s never failed a drug test before, and I doubt he’ll fail one now that he’s having to cut down to 265 from about 285.

I guess were all forgetting Lesners been training Gracie Jiu-Jitsu for the past year or two..Mir’s a sloth who was good at submissions before a few other people..he dosent have that edge anymore. Get Minotauro that UFC belt already this guy dana whites holding out tryen to get Rodrigo a lil bit older so one of his wack “UFC HEAVYWEIGHTS” can keep the belts…Nogueira hasent had more then a 4 month layoff in years and Danas tryen to keep him inactive..Good stratagy Dana
